    To be good at something, you need to know its principles. To be great at something, you need to know when to break those principles.

      I don't know what his background is but it seems like he has a great anatomical understanding and finds ways to compare some techniques so non-climbers can easily grasp it as well.

    I thought the first rule of climbing was "you always talk about climbing". Just kidding, very informative video. I was surprised by how intuitive those rules become once you consciously start applying them.

    Great video on describing such a simple technique in climbing but one of the most useful techniques ! When I learned this I learned it as: if I’m reaching with my right hand to the next hold I need to make sure that my right foot has a stable foothold (and vice versa). This way it helps prioritize footwork when climbing. Keep the good work! 👍🏼

    • @jhf99991
      @jhf99991 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was a bit confused but I think Ive got it now. When he says "use left hand" it means left hand is pulling while right hand is reaching. So if right hand is reaching right foot must be stable & pushing as you say.

I would love to see more videos about movement on the wall. One exercise I do a lot is to climb a few grades lower than my on-sight grade and hesitate for 3 seconds over every next hold. Could you possibly do a video about body tension and it's importance when climbing?

    Thank god I'm not the only person teaching this as the first rule of climbing. I teach my kids to weight the same foot as the arm they are reaching with and it seemed to be better received. Additionally this rule holds true all the way up to the highest levels of climbing with very few exceptions (and more often than not the if breaking the rule feels easier then that climber has noticeable imbalances).

    Question on 5:20 - I guess I'd have to be there to feel it, but why wouldn't you go hips square with your right foot pushing off the wall, so your right hand can grab the first move? Is it because of an overhang wall and hips square would put my center of gravity too far away from the wall and I would fall off the wall before I could even start?

    When to prefer an inside flag over a back flag?

    • @movementforclimbers
      @movementforclimbers  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Typically, back flags are preferred when the foothold is high while inside flags are used if the foothold is lower. You can imagine that it would be difficult to twist in and out of a scrunched position if you're inside flagging on a high foothold. In my experience, inside flag is a bit of a "forbidden" technique in that it's so rarely used. I've only done them on start moves as it's too much of a hassle to twist and untwist out of them mid-route. Back flagging and outside flagging are usually much quicker options. Hope that helps!
