- Welcome to David Leathem Golf (PGA Professional) in today’s video I am going into detail about the lead wrist position at the top of the backswing and a simple test to make sure you can achieve it
I am getting a lot of golfers coming to me in golf lessons trying to ‘bow’ their wrist at the top of the backswing and while it’s good for some golfers it can be disastrous for others.
I discuss how PGA Tour players such as Jon Rahm and Collin Morikawa can play golf with a bowed wrist and how golfers like Matt Fitzpatrick can play with a cupped wrist.
So what should you do? Well I give you a simple test to check your left hand grip so that you can ensure the ideal way to get the perfect position at the top of the backswing. A square clubface matching the lead forearm and also a flat left wrist at the top of the backswing.

Hey thanks so much for the comment and thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it. ⛳️ just googled Astbury Golf Vlub and it looks great 👍
Watching from Sweden, currently recovering from a tenniselbow from hell in my left elbow that i probably got from trying to bow my wrist , this video will help alot next season :)
Sweden is lovely, played a little bit of golf there in Gothenburg years ago. Sorry to hear that you got tennis elbow from that, had that before and it’s not nice. Hopefully this helps you out 👌
Excellent, as always, Dave! I really need to check it once I am at the range.
👍 awesome thank you. Yes check it out and let me know ⛳️
Another great video! Finally someone who understands the needs of the different golfers and can explain the big WHY in an easy to understand way. Please a video about the release at the moment of impact. (fault pushfade due to blocked release). Thanks!
Thanks for the comments. 100% that’s why I wanted to make this channel, to explain the WHY. Absolutely that’s a good one I’ll add it to my list 👍
Great way of checking the wrist position at the top of the backswing. Turns out I was gripping the club a bit too strong making the club face too closed at the top!
Awesome mate that’s great to hear it helped you out. Hope you’re doing well ⛳️
Yet another excellent video. I tried to bend my left wrist on a shot today - it went way off to the left! I can now understand the link between the grip and and the club position at the top of the swing. (member of Portstewart GC)
That’s awesome really glad it made sense to you 👍 that’s cool what a great course. I spend a lot of time up there. It’s an amazing place. ⛳️
Watching from Spain. I love your videos.
That’s awesome thanks so much 🙏 Where are you located in Spain?
I live in Valladolid, north from Madrid. A very cold place in winter. But that is not an obstacle to play golf 😜
Ah cool I’ve been to Madrid and it’s lovely, but never played golf there. I go every summer to Spain down near murcia and it’s lovely ⛳️
