Troy, with its 4,000 years of history, is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. The first excavations at the site were undertaken by the famous archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann in 1870. In scientific terms, its extensive remains are the most significant demonstration of the first contact between the civilizations of Anatolia and the Mediterranean world. Moreover, the siege of Troy by Spartan and Achaean warriors from Greece in the 13th or 12th century B.C., immortalized by Homer in the Iliad, has inspired great creative artists throughout the world ever since.
Even crazier is they found that the city was sacked and burned around when this war was supposed to take place in the multiple foundations as the city grew

Her name is Saffron Burrows. She played in Deep Blue Sea, Bank Job and other movies.
As an acting role, I remember her best from Wing Commander.
As a woman stripping down to very little, I definitely remember her best from Deep Blue Sea.

That scene between Peter O'toole and Brad Pitt in the tent was so powerful. 1 of my favorite scenes. I love Greek mythology so the ending of this video with all the explanation was the highlight for me
The exact horse used in this movie still stands on Canakkale/Turkey, where the Troy was located back in antiquity. And the funny part is, Greeks and Turks are still their arch enemies today but they also love and respect each other. It is a weird relationship.
Also some funny informations: When Mehmet II conquered Constantinople 1453, he said that he revenged Hector.
In WW1, 1915, the Brltlsh send an undefeated armada, the most powerful navy ever seen at this date that led by battleship HMS Agamemnon to capture Gallipoli, the exact place where Troy used to stand, but they defeated and HMS Agamemnon docked to Smyrna (Izmir/Turkey today) until Turks won the independence war against Greeks (1922) and Kemal Ataturk threaten the Brltlsh by dictating he’d sink HMS Agamemnon if she won’t leave Turkish waters, as a result HMS Agamemnon fled back to Britain and Ataturk also said he avenged Hector.
Ataturk tried to find how Hector was looked like since he also used the tactic Hector used to defeat Greeks to put a statue for his honor, unfortunately couldn’t succeed to find out how he was looked like.

I think I learned more about Greek mythology from Xena and this movie more than my actual mythology class in high school!😂 I remember reading the Iliad and the Odessey etc but the names were so hard for me to retain and grasp. Of course it was high school and was more into my social skills than my intellect at the time.😆
And to think Troy was a city of mythological legend...until it was actually discovered!!! I wonder about Atlantis!🤔

Im really impressed by your knowledge of both the Roman Empire and the Greek Mythology. I also have an interest in both since childhood, but with just a fraction of your knowledge. So the outro was very enjoyable to listen to. All though i knew about most of it, it had slipped away but came back when you talked about it. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for reacting to this classic! This came out around the time I left for college and I owned the DVD (I’m kinda aging myself lol) and watched it all the time. Still one of my favorite historical movies of today. ❤

That duel is a really powerful scene, and one of the best ever filmed. I justwish Eric Bana would have used his shield... that's the one obvious weakness that shows it's not stuntmen doing it.
Brad was so incredible as Achilles. Also would recommend Immortals if you haven't seen it. It's starring a young Henry Cavill. It was the 1st film I saw him in. He plays Theseus in the movie

King Arthur is one of my favourite movies, and I truly consider it an under-appreciated masterpiece. One of Hans Zimmer's best scores.

@flix2us that formation Achilles used was known. The Romans: Testudo formation, a Roman military tactic which involved a formation of soldiers using their shields to form a tortoise-shell-like protective cover against enemy weapons
It's still used today for riot control.
Diane Kruger was just terrific in her performance in FX's 2013 series 'The Bridge'. I binge-watched both seasons because she was so damn good. Oh - the series is absolutely excellent, too.
The only thing I dislike is Menelaus, in mythology/literature he was a honorable man and he loved his wife. Here, he is some barbaric brute.
There were trailers for this for over a year and half before it came out. Not many movies can live up to that kind of hype... This did.

Speaking of historical period epic films, another one directed by Ridley Scott that I think is often underrated and also stars Orlando Bloom is the 2005 'Kingdom of Heaven'. Orlando Bloom, Liam Neeson, an unrecognizable Ed Norton, Eva Green, Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson and they are all great.

Oh, for once after watching the reaction for Troy i didn't have to leave a comment about a true death of Agamemnon :D I had a book about Greek and Roman mythos during my childhood and read it back and forth dozens of time. My favorites were Troy epos and then the beginning of Rome.

He brought him to fight but not until it was a situation where achilles could control it. The invasion wasnt thst. But later he would have set patroclus loose when he was able to make sure he wouldnt get hurt.

Yeah. As much as I appreciate the added scenes and character work, I prefer the music in the theatrical cut. Same with King Arthur with Clive Owen.

Other movies based on Greek mythology I recommend watching are the Clash of the Titans remake and its sequel Wrath of the Titans. Historical drama series I recommend watching are Rome and Spartacus

I think this is great movie, but to this day i can't hear Odysseus' name without thinking of the children's show "Wishbone", and the little dog Wishbone plays him in that.
The most sarcastic line of the show;
"I AM POSIDON, KING OF THE SEA!"
"I am Odysseus. Floating on this raft."
Oh, and let me ruin that lighthearted animal tale with something nobody wants to hear. In the scene where they lay the trap and the scout sees the ships, they did the courtesy of shooting the rider, and not the horse. That's not how it plays out in reality because you can't have a riderless horse return.
Love this movie. Wish the gods were in because it was a god who “bewitched” Helen to love Paris so when Paris lost the vail slowly started to fall. ultimately leading Helen to not saying anything about the Trojan horse
I enjoyed the extended cut, which has more of Odysseus and Ajax. Having said that, I prefer the 2003 miniseries HELEN OF TROY. Obviously not the budget of the theatrical version, but well done.
Damn, you know your stuff. You make Europeans look bad 😅. All this stuff was taught in school when i was a kid so we sort of know these stories of The Iliad and The Odyssey. But you went full on Discovery Channel on us. Loved it. Let me repay you with this.. Hectors wife was played by the English actress Safron Burrows, she's in a lot but stands out in Deep Blue Sea. And Helen of Troy is played by Diane Kruger. Best known from Inglorious Basterds.

A masterpiece when it comes to the peplum genre! What Hollywood is too prudish to tell you is that Patrocles is not Achilles'cousin, but his lover. No wonder he was angry! Horses were created by Poseidon out of the ocean's foamy waves, that's why the Troyan horse is seen as an offer to Poseidon.
This being said, this is a very entertaining movie. I really enjoyed your reactions as well as your knowledge of ancient history.
Actually, in The Iliad they were just cousins! It was later authors that played up a romantic relationship, and it's become so ingrained in popular culture.

@@TiisiphoneNot exactly an "urban legend", but as said before, another "canon" that was popularized a few hundred years after the Illiad was written. Aeschylus and Plato's works are the first that pop in my head, because they were convinced that Achilles and Patroclus' relationship was sexual in nature. You could even interpret those works as ancient fanfiction. I'm pretty sure even Shakespeare nods at it in Troilus and Cressida.
Technically, Achilles and Patroclus are first cousins once removed, since both have ancestry that date back to Aegina. Even though they are never explicitly referred to as lovers in the Illiad, their dynamic is very intimate and easy to INTERPRET as homoerotic. A lot of works were lost in time, but there's surely a reason why the wide majority of icons of the classical period saw them as a couple. Not only that but many queer folk in modern times, including myself, relate a lot to their relationship. Their closeness, be it romantic or platonic, is definetly downplayed in the movie, which is a shame.

@@acousthicc5198I think it's Hollywood that downplays their relationship. But fortunately we have an actor who is able to talk without words. It's very obvious to me that Achilles loves Patroklos. He is so relaxed and open in the scene with him at home. They joke and play with each other. You get this vibe never again in this movie. It's hard to say if it's erotic, but they definitely love each other.

I like this movie but I cannot compare it with the Iliad or Greek mythology... it would drive me mad. They basically made the Greeks more like villains. For example, Agamemnon is my favorite hero from the Trojan War, but here in this movie... horrible (Menelaus the same). Agamemnon was badass, one of the best warriors and hero, loyal, honest, great king and leader of whole greek army.
BTW I love how many historians and "experts" today don't think it's likely that a war (and such a large one) would have started just because of a woman... they kind of overlook how big a deal Xenia was, the law of hospitality which is overseen by the supreme Zeus himself; that Helen - "the woman" - was not just woman but the queen of Sparta, most beautiful in world and beloved wife of their king; and also somehow everyone forgets that Paris along with Hellena also took away the entire Spartan treasury... absolutely sufficient reasons for the involvement of all the Greeks and their allies against Troy and its allies. Paris insulted, humiliated and betrayed Menelaus and all the Greeks as much as he could. It would be rather impossible for something like that not to start a war. :D
Not to mention the previous bad relations of the Greeks with the Trojans (mainly because of the treacherous ruler Laomedon).

That's why I prefer Diomedes in The Iliad. He has all the fighting prowess of Achilles, but none of his tantrums and more negative qualities.
