There are several moves like that in Japanese martial arts. The only thing that you can do to replicate is put water on the blade. It will remove some of the water, but not all of it but it’s still pretty cool though. The reason why that they would try to remove as much blood from the blade as possible is because blood will make your blade rust. I would imagine that samurai and other swordsman as soon as they got to a place they could clean their blade with probably clean it and dry it thoroughly.

To me, Shintaro Katsu will always be Zatoichi, but this guy who I believe is more famous as a director does a great interpretation of the blind swordsman.
Just had to laugh... fudge me. You've got his sword, don't go walking up and.....oh dear. Never gets old. One of my all time fave films, yes the effects have aged but... it's brilliant. Takeshi Kitano is on form as always. One film to have in any film fans library

Takeshi Kitano did a great job making this movie. One of his best movies, big hit at the cinema. Very enjoyeable. Wonder why he never made another one of this movie? He chose to make 3 Outrage movies instead. Two of them were fantastic but still feel he really brought out this Zatoichi character, the blind swordsman. He could have done like Tom Cruise, improving on his Mission Impossible series, everyone better than the next. No, he just put a full stop there.

Having grown up on the old B/W Zatoichi movies, this one with the dyed contemporary hair made me hesitant at first. But this scene, which I think happened very early in the movie, was like the old Zatoichi. And the dude cutting up his partner was a clever touch of humor.

The lack of background music adds quite a bit to the movie.
