Really nice review. I just got an 8 GTE after having an 8 1.5, since I started smaller trips. I completely agree with your input, also about the buttons - I have no idea who is changing climate control or browsing radio stations all the time 😅😊
This was a good review, I'm thinking of swapping my 7.5 GTI for one of these in the near future.
It was in the workshop for a month and a half, they changed the gearbox and since then everything has been working fine. The anger is because thousands of defective vehicles have come out of the factory and even knowing it, they continued selling them. If you're not in a hurry, wait for the new version since they announce double the autonomy in electric mode. All the best

Hi, I really hope you would be able to answer my query and clear my doubt. I have just bought a used Golf gte plugin hybrid a couple of days ago. It still has factory warranty till April' 24. Has been driven for only 6000 kms. One year old car. Its almost fully loaded with features offered. I bought it because I just loved it when I took it for a test drive and did not want to wait for delivery time for the new car. Coming to my question, when I picked my Golf GTE from the dealer. The battery was not charged. Dealer was ready to charge it but then I had to leave the car overnight there and come again next day. Thought it would be a good experience and start for me to understand how to charge the battery as it is my first battery oriented car, I drove it to home on petrol engine. I then found a charging station nearby my home and charged the battery there. It took 3 hours to charge it full. But after the charge it showed only 45 kms of range. I know it is a used car but its only one year old and has been driven for 6000 kms only. I am little sad about it. I expected it to give at-least 55 to 60 kms of range if not full 64 kms as claimed by VW. Also, I did not see battery recuperating in hybrid mode. Should I take to VW authorized service center or is there anything in the settings that I can do something about. I did find that there is a setting of minimum charge which was set to 30%. I thought maybe it is because of this the mileage range is showing less. So I changed it to 20% but it did not make any difference. May you please suggest what should or can I do in this case? or is it just real world scenario of Golf GTE I have to live with...

Notice to all. VW Golf 8 GTE bought in February 2023 and has been in the workshop for a month with noise problems in the gearbox. If you are interested in a model like this one, think very well before buying it, you will avoid a lot of problems.

Hi, I personally have not been encountering many issues in the past 14.000KM. I've only had the issue of Front Assist giving a warning when driving away in the morning a few times and that's about it. This being ofcourse a 2022 model perhaps they updated issues with the 2021 model. If you have any other questions let me know! Cheers
How's the sound system like? Sadly, you can't have harman&kardon upgrade to it.

Do know why there if a difference of 41HP from the lower model (non GTE) since they have the same gasoline powertrain with a 5kw difference in the electric engine?

Hello! Does the car always have 245hp even when the battery dies while you are driving? or you get only the 150hp coming from the 1.4 engine?

I wish they brought these GTEs to the United States. Turbo plug-in hybrid hatchback with good power, seems like a perfect car for me.
It's a great driver and being able to go fully eletric is a nice addition. However, considering the price for a regular GTI in the US is very cheap compared to what these cars cost here in The Netherlands is crazy. My GTE was €45.000. A GTI with the same options here would cost about €56.000 when throwing it in the VW Configurator. In Germany (where car taxes are allot lower) GTI's are even cheaper. So I don't think a GTE would sell well in the US sadly enough.
Hi Jay, great review, I've just purchased a 2018 GTE 😁 My concern is whist driving in electric only mode and when the battery is depleted the petrol engine cuts in at current speed, isn't that harmful to that engine as the oil, etc is still cold?
Yes it's not that good for the turbo. Many people had turbo failure in the MK7 for this reason

Zeker een goede video! Ik ben erg benieuwd naar wat je gemiddeld genomen op een volle tank/accu rijd aan kilometers. En wat het gemiddeld verbruik is op de snelweg met 120km/u.
Dankjewel! Over het algemeen rijd ik nooit een volle tank leeg met maar één keer laden. Laatst had ik het voor elkaar gekregen 1300km op een tank te rijden omdat ik hem vrijwel elke dag thuis oplaad. Overigens is mijn gemiddeld verbruik over een rit van 40km (mijn rit naar mijn werk) waarvan 10km binnendoor en 30km snelweg ongeveer 4.0L/100KM in hybride modes. Tijdens mijn vakantie van 3000KM reed ik ongeveer 600KM op een tank (met een lege accu) met een gemiddelde van 5.5L/100KM. Dit was echter met 170 km/h op de snelweg en veel hoogte verschil in Noord Italië. Het verbruik valt me in elk geval niet tegen tot nu toe!
Tried to get a test drive in one of these, but none of the local dealers have one. They must expect that you would pay 40k for a car without trying it first.

Hey man! Really great video, congrats. i am currently waiting for my GTE and I have a question for you. Did you ever fully deplete the battery while running in Hybrid Mode? I am really interested for how long I can drive with the full 245 HP before I need to charge it up again. I know the battery can be recharged with the help of the brakes and also the 1.4 TSI engine, however I would be really interested to see some long range results. Thank you very much!
Thanks! Exciting times waiting for your GTE. It's a great car to own! Regarding your question about depleting the battery fully in hybrid mode: I just took the car on a 3.000KM trip without charging it and the car pretty much always had all 245HP. I wasn't, of course, constantly driving at max the whole time. Every time I asked for more power it was all fully there. The car always charges the battery when It's not giving power. So when driving just normal pieces of road at for instance 80km/h the car was using a bit of its engine power to charge the batteries and that meant the car was always around 5-10% battery. If you have any other questions let me know!

@@VegiTheo Glad that I was able to answer your question! :). For me, delivery took about 12 weeks between ordering and receiving the car. However, due to the chip shortage, my dealer told me 2 months ago that if you wanted to order one now it would take until January 2022. However, that was 2 months ago. Hopefully, it is better now! :)
245 HP only applies when driving in GTE mode. If you want to rally on the road and at the same time be economical then it is probably better with a GTD. And if you do not want to be economical, you can just as well drive a GTI. if you do not think for the vehicle tax

Haha. Helaas een kwaaltje waar ik zelf last van heb. Heeft, gelukkig, niets met de auto te maken.
Ik heb de Golf GTE nu voor 9 maanden, 20.000 km. Behoorlijk Golf liefhebber en heb ze altijd zakelijk gereden. Van Golf 4 2.3 tot Golf 7.5R. Mijn mening over die Golf 8 is een stuk minder positief als voorgaande modellen. Ikzelf zal beginnen met de negatieve punten.
Het systeem ( dashboard ) is ongelofelijk traag, moet lang opstarten. Draadloos Apple CarPlay is een ramp, loopt continu vast, moet soms 5-10 minuten opstarten. Is hiervoor al 2 keer bij VW geweest. De veiligheid systemen zoals lane assist is ontzettend gevoelig, wanneer je het stuur niet goed vast heb dan begin hij om de 2-3 minuten te zeuren, doet ook vaak een emergency rem manoeuvre midden op de snelweg, detecteert het midden van de weg soms alsof je niet in het missen zit, dus weer een melding PAS OP! Heel irritant. Dit systeem zit ook op mijn Audi RS4 van 2019 en daarin werkt het fantastisch…. Verder de materialen van de Golf 8 zijn veruit een stuk minder van kwaliteit als zijn voorgangers. Laatste negatieve punt…. De Volkswagen APP…. Over traag gesproken… ( BMW EN TESLA VEEL SNELLER ) positief: ik heb mijn 8 GTE fully loaded besteld, stoelkoeling, adaptive onderstel en ga zo maar door, mooie looks, ( iets te hoog op de poten… 😄 ) en het rijden voelt lekker aan, best af en toe wel een GTI gevoel. Accu ook in de zomer meer dan prima, heb deze zomer meerdere malen 65km + behaalt volledig ACCU! Apeldoorn - Zwartsluis is ongeveer 35 / 40 km snelweg met 110 cruise. Pluspunt! Algemeen verbruik zomerbanden lange rit 1:19/1:20
Ik begrijp helemaal de op en aanmerkingen die je maakt. Inmiddels herken ik me al aardig in een aantal van de dingen die je benoemd. Gelukkig lijkt mijn CarPlay wel vrij stabiel waardoor ik het VW Systeem vrijwel niet hoef te gebruiken. En mijn god wat is die We Connect app traag inderdaad 😒. De problemen die je met Travel Assist hebt lijkt ik niet echt te hebben. Ongeveer 2 keer nu ook een "scare" gehad dat de auto in eens iets herkende wat er niet was, over de 18.000KM die ik inmiddels sinds juni gereden heb valt het dus wel mee. Qua materiaal gebruik is dit mijn eerste VAG product en Golf dus moet ik uit gaan van de feedback van mensen die dit wel hebben gehad. Qua plussen heb je hem zo te zien redelijk in de opties zitten ja 😉. Gezien ik al aardig over mijn budget heen ging heb ik wat dingen op die optie lijst moeten laten liggen haha. Maar in de basis zijn ze gelukkig al aardig vol uitgevoerd. Het hoge op de poten is inderdaad een beetje jammer. Ze hadden er gewoon de zelfde 15mm verlagende veren onder moeten gooien als op de GTI. En qua rijden geeft het i.c.m. de DCC in sport of nog voorbij sport naar mijn idee echt een strak sturende wagen. Kort nog naar de ID.3 gekeken uit voorraad op 8% bijtelling maar uiteindelijk iets meer met mijn autoliefhebbers hart gekeken 😊. En nog een 2019 RS4 op de stoep hebben staan is hartstikke gaaf! Zal vast en zeker ook super rijden. Bedankt voor je comment en voor het kijken. Waardeer het! En veel veilige kilometers nog! 👌🏻

Maar 129 km/u rijden op een 60 km weg is niet wat het moet zijn
I had to choose between a GTE from 2022 and GTE 7.5 from 2020. I took the one from 2020, my consumtion is better than your. I drived it for 400km and I had consumtion 3.5 l at 100km. The look and interior your can't compare. The golf 8 is a great car, GTE is fantastic hybrid, but 7.5 is much better than 8 (exterior, interior and consumtion). I am looking forward for 9, but the direction what they took, I will keep my 7.5 for few good years.
Hoe werkt dit hybride systeem? Je zei dat je naar Italië gereden was met hybride mode aan. Is dan halverwege de rit je accu leeg en rijd je dan op de 1.4 motor tot dat je 3,5uur stopt om op te laden?

Hi, I'm choosing which car to buy, I usually do 30.000 km in a year. About 120 km a day (60 to go to work where I can almost always recharge it to 100% and 60 to return) and at the weekend even 300 / 400km in one day. I'm undecided between golf GTE and bmw 1 series 120d, surely the bmw can do over 20 km/l but I don't know how much the golf GTE really consumes. I would like to ask you how much the GTE really consumes on the highway at 130/140/150 km/h covering up to 200 km.
So if you charge the battery for your drives when running it as a hybride you should be able to do between 4L/5L per 100KM. So I thinks that's pretty good. It sure has more power than a 120D and I bet that this is by default allot more sporty. For infotainment the BMW beats the Golf considering the tech issues it has been having. VW should have a big update for it somewhere in Q1 of 2022. Plus side with this is that you should be able to do part of your trip fully electric if you want. In the winter I get about 40KM highway around 110KM/H and in the summer closer to 55-60KM. Pretty fair range if you ask me.

Hoeveel km (in afstand) kan je rijden in een hybride modus met een volle accu en tank? Want ik hoorde ook dat je de accu kan opladen tijdens het rijden? Ofzoiets
Het is mogelijk om in de auto in te stellen of je met de benzine motor de accu tot een bepaald punt bij wil laden. Echter zal hier het verbruik best een stuk omhoog gaan. Wanneer je dit niet doet en met een volle accu op hybride modus gaat rijden, afhankelijk van de snelheid en hoe zwaar je rechter voet is ;), haal je denk ik ongeveer 800KM op een tank. Ik laad mijn auto vrijwel elke dag op en rij vervolgens een groot deel elektrisch dus ik kan je helaas nog geen super goede inschatting geven.
@@jaydrives4878 oke okee thankss jaa want ik weet alleen dat je ong 50/60 km puur elektrisch kan rijden. Maar weet niet hoeveel je dus kan rijden in hybrid modus. Zou jammer zijn als je maar 100 km kan rijden in hybrid modus met volle accu en tank natuurlijk.
@@layzi892 Ik verwacht dat je sowieso verder kan rijden dan 100KM hoor! Als je de auto gewoon zijn ding laat doen heb je altijd accu power en de benzine motor samen. Zelf haal ik dan tussen de 600-700KM.

But you definitely did not save much petrol when driving in GTE mode. Then a GTD probably consumes less fuel per mile. if you want to save petrol on a GTE, it is the hybrid mode or the E mode you should drive on
The car doesn't have a proper GTE mode anymore like it did in the Golf 7 GTE. You either can have it in E-Mode or Hybrid. If you then put the car in sport while in Hybrid mode you get the full acceleration with the battery assist. You can set the Hybride mode to charge the battery with the engine but I never use that feature because, indeed, the consumption is allot higher. The most economical way to drive this GTE is either by running it on full electric (+/- 50KM) or driving it in Hybride mode (average 4.0L/100KM). Perhaps the GTD is the most economical one of the three. However, you do have a bit less power (200 BHP) and the GTD is not being sold in my country anymore because they are slowly banning all new diesels. If I just drive the car with a depleted battery all the time I got about 6L/100KM. But charging it makes the most sense ofcourse!

The way mine is specced it cost €45.000 in 2021. Right now the starting price is €44.690 here so they've gotten more expensive.
Hi, I am still a bit confused between whuch should I get between the GTE and the GTI. If in the future, the electric motor battery dies, I heard that it is costy to replace the battery and it might not be worth it. Is this true?
Hi, if you are deciding between the two I would urge you to go for the GTI instead of GTE. In my country the price difference is significant enough to reward going for the GTE (€15.000) difference. Added to that my employer likes the fact that it's partly electric. Costs regarding the battery replacement I'm not sure. I'd guess a couple of thousands of euros. If the battery capacity drops you'd still have quite an economical car running it as a hybrid. It's up to you! Good luck

The problem with capacitive "buttons" is not so much getting used to it or not, but rather accidental touches and not being able to find the button by touch, both of which takes your eyes (attention) off from the road. This is a case of finding a solution to a problem that doesn't exists, or trying to look new/different/techie for the sake of doing it and abandoning the fundamental design principle that form follows function.
VW has also betrayed it's core design value... Hard plastic trim to cut cost?!
Car is superb, but the UI sucks. I'll be keeping my Mk. V, VI and VII.
Totally get your point! Sadly enough all the "sports" models get these touch capacitive steeringwheels as standard. Otherwise I would, probably, have opted for the the normal one for sure! The hard plastic trim on the rear doors was a bit of a turn off. I also had the chance to lease the ID.3 and that was even worse. Even in the front you would get the hard plastic door trims and just the whole feel of the interior was not even on par with the Golf 8MK. In the end I'm glad that I ended up with the Golf MK8 but I totally get people that prefer the Golf MK7 over this!

VW should really comtemplate on bringing back a non GTI golf to north america now that the Civic hatch is running around with no actual competition. VW thought Honda would only sell it for one generation and poof its gone. No.
It's a shame they don't sell the normal Golf for sure. It's just a great all round hatchback. It is however nice that you do get the GTI and R now over there. And for a price that seems really good!

Getting it up there haha. It's now been 4 months of ownership and it's due for it's first service at 15.000KM. It's been a great drive and I'm still loving it after all these kilometers 😊
Be aware these cars a thwart with problems go ahead and read up on the forums from owners who are having problems with steering wheel sensors and touchscreens failing its a massive problem and vw don't have the parts leaving owners stranded for months.. do your homework
