@@davidw7 That can be said for literally ANYTHING... Criticism will always exist no matter how good you are at something. The thing here is that people naturally mature over the span of 30 years and start to appreciate or at least respect the things they used to criticize. Also new audiences introduced to Metallica as a band with such importance are less likely to criticize these songs like they used to when the band first started. You are less likely to criticize Mozart today than back when he revolutionized music even if you don't particularly enjoy his work.

It's allways sounding more emotional and sincere when the "hard boys" do a ballad :) Fade to Black and Nothing else matters allways make me super emotinal :) Love these songs.
Its called a ballad. A very well written and composed ballad. James actually didnt want have the band listen to the song as he thought it too sappy. Its probably the best thing he has ever written.
The footage used for this music video was all filmed for a documentary that covered the making of the Black Album and the first leg of the tour. A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica. GREAT documentary for those who haven't seen it yet.
I’ve been listening to Metallica for 24 years this song nothing else matters still give me chills and goosebumps. This is my favorite song. This band means a lot to my family with my aunt died of breast cancer and her love for Metallica brought our family together even more after she passed
This was a pop ballad hit from 1991... James Hetfield wrote 'Nothing else matters' to his then-girlfriend while he missed her on tour... it was a love song by Metallica and one of the first song he had written that well mellow throughout... They hired classical music composer (the late) Michael Kamen to add strings to the track. Years later in 1999, Michael Kamen conducted a full classical orchestra playing alongside Metallica in a live concert for the 'S&M' record. This music video was shot for the 1990/ '91 sessions for the 'black' album for the documentary 'A year and half in the life of Metallica'... If the band members look angry in the footage, it's because they were... Metallica spent a year working on the record and could not agree on anything in the studio... the budget ran over 1 million $$$ and the band members were always clashing w/ each other and the producer Bob Rock... The situation became so toxic that it spilled into their personal lives and 3 members (Lars, Kirk & Jason) all got divorced at the end of the sessions... and James had broken up w/ the woman who inspired 'Nothing else matters'... Metallica spent 1991 to 1994 on tour as the 'black' album sold 9 million copies (16 million in the US to date) and was a huge phenomenon worldwide😈
Best part is that the riff for this song in the intro came from Hetfield laying in bed strumming open notes in standard tuning. He thought that low E, then G, B, and High E sounded good
One of the greatest Metallica songs, how James vocals comes to life is incredible. And just like all their songs the lyrics and story behind it is amazing
Hetfield is a super underrated lead guitarist. This tune and To Live is to Die showcase two of the best lead parts from this band and both are played by James

Nice Reaction! A few years ago Miley Cyrus put a cover of this song on her album and her Producer wanted the intro to be a piano instead of guitar, so he called Elton John to do it, which he did. Then Metallica was on Howard Stern Show to play the song with Miley and Elton Zoom called in and told the story of being asked to do the intro and said that he thought this was one of the best songs ever written. James wrote this song and was visibly shook hearing someone like Elton John say that about one of his songs. They put the video of it here on YT.

Great reaction vid! You absolutely HAVE to react to "Fade to Black" by Metallica, it's easily my favorite song from them. I think the studio version is the best personally but their live performances are also great.
Elton John called this the best song he's ever heard. Wow. And Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath Bassist) said "thank God for Metallica". That's epic high praise. My favorite part of this video is when Kirk lifts up the Gibson Les Paul in victory after doing wiring repairs. Fixed it! Lol. If you play guitar you get it. Les Pauls are high end instruments. So of course that means they are high maintenance.
The Black album had many Metallica fans very upset. Many fans felt that Metallica was selling out their sound for a more "mainstream " sound for more radio time. I am a huge fan from the beginning and I will admit that this album was definitely a shock to the system, I still quite enjoyed it. I'm glad they took a chance on themselves, because they reached another audience that would have never listened at all. Cheers!!
You’re right, they opened my eyes to a whole new genre… Being a jazz drummer, Van Halen and Metallica changed the way I viewed music… It was great because I then had thousands of new songs to learn from all that came before 👍🏾

Definitely one of my favorite Metallica songs. It's a bit softer while still having that heavy, Metallica feel to it; like being on the edge of a thunderstorm.
You went all introspective on this one…and it perfectly fit the song. I can’t imagine anyone hearing this and not doing the same. It just washes over you and grabs you emotionally and intellectually. Metallica was on Howard Stern’s show, with Elton John in remotely. Elton said right to them, on air, “It’s one of the best f-cking songs ever written.” They all looked like they were gut-punched at that, and James almost lost it. He had a couple tears sneak out even with his best effort to hold it together.
It was a song he wrote to his girlfriend at the time. Lars heard him strumming it while he was on the phone. Lars said that’s going on the album James was against it.
When I see this video, the first thing I always think of is the relationship of the band at this point in time. Metallica were on top of the world and tensions were so high during the recording of this album. So much ego, the drugs and alcohol, divorces, etc. Seeing them still tour and still kick ass. Clean and sober. I think it's a crazy all the shit they were able to work through to stay together all these decades (Aside from Jason of course, but hey man he went and did his thing and I'm happy for him) These guys were my gateway drug to metal when I was a kid and I will listen to them til the day I die.
@Rayactions Metallica Band uses distortion pedals, such as the MXR 5150 EVH Signature Overdrive, ProCo RAT, and Ibanez Tube Screamer, to make their guitars sound heavier and more distorted. Delay pedals, that creates an “echo” effect and a sense of space in their solos. Reverb pedals, to make their guitars sound more like they’re being played in a large room. Chorus pedals, to make their guitars sound thicker and more full I've been playing electric guitars for over 27 years I have most of the guitar pedals they use and back in the 90's I was lucky enough to able to buy a Gibson Les Paul Custom in ebony very similar to Kirk Hammett's Gibson LP Custom in ebony that he uses.
This song is a love song, but not a conventional one, it's a song about a person reflecting about themselves being not swept by the feeling, but just flowing with it. I always took it as "hey look, I feel like love makes me a stronger person!". Also might be love for their band, love for their fans, love for their family, even love for themself, love for this feeling of not caring about what other people thinks of them when they evolve. It's an universal song.
This was the last song played in disco's (yeah they were still called that) in late 90's, the one where you get your (often potential) girl and do the slow dance.
The Black Album is where many of the "die hard" Metallica fans say they sold out and became too mainstream. While I knew of them and listened to them before this Album dropped, it was the Black Album that solidified Metallica as one of my favorite Bands of all time.
Nice song and that's my favorite song from metallica, i listen to this song every night and it still does 'till now. I think this song give me something refreshing mind so i love it
I know people always want you to react to classic songs or older Metallica songs but something like Until It Sleeps would be really cool to get your thoughts on. The subject matter is on the death of his mom and personally them tuning down a half step to better accommodate James' lower voice made this mid to late 90s era my favorite James vocals. His clean voice is so badass on Sleeps
With all the candid behind the scenes footage in this, there is a shot of Lars with a picture of Kip Winger on a dartboard. This elevated the negativity against Winger who were seen as a pretty boy band, despite how talented all the members are. It got so bad that Beavis and Butthead had Winger on the guys t-shirt who they used to pick on. Many years later Lars actually apologised to Kip and basically said it was a childish and unprofessional thing, but he has grown up since then. Just a small piece of trivia.
Of all the crushing classics, Fade, San, One, this one took the most guts. A testament to their evoloution as songwrtiers, open thinking, being true to themselves, and not giving a fuck about what "others" think about in the "Metal Bizz" when they comitted it to the black album. They took a chance, and it became an instant classic that will forever be timeless. How fucking cool is that?
Something else that people need to take into account is that Metallica saw the reaction to the longer songs on the "...And Justice for All" album on the Damaged Justice tour aside from "One" and realized that their setlist got shorter and shorter because of those longer songs, and the audience started getting bored which was a clear indication that they had to write songs that were shorter and got straight to the point.
Would just love to have someone in my life who is as passionate about music as I am. Any couples out there who listen to music together and go to gigs together… God damn, you guys are so lucky. Hope you really appreciate what you have. Some of us are so alone and only have the music…
That's the best way to describe James voice compared to other bands - gravel. I've often described old songs like whiplash where they go flat out and he sounds like he's just had a handful of gravel chucked down his throat - in an alternate univers the band is called Gravel Mouth. Love the testosterone of it all.
It sounds like the word you were looking for is "ballad" which was popular for most 80's albums. The "BLACK" album was released in 91, I would consider this a METALLICA ballad for sure! 🤘🤘
I would absolutely love it if music reactors did long-form reactions (like 45-60 min) to classic videos like A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica, or the Pantera home videos. I grew up watching those over and over, and it would be amazing to experience them again through new eyes.
If you haven't seen it, you should check out Geoff Castellucci's group Voiceplay who do a great version of this song. They are an a cappella group, but their beatboxer throws in an instrument for fun. I know you love Geoff's bass vocals.
To me this song is the definition of power ballad. It has the tenderness, the hardness, the vocals, the lyrics etc etc.
And a killer solo at the end

Seeing them still tour and still kick ass. Clean and sober. I think it's a crazy all the shit they were able to work through to stay together all these decades (Aside from Jason of course, but hey man he went and did his thing and I'm happy for him)
These guys were my gateway drug to metal when I was a kid and I will listen to them til the day I die.
Metallica never did any drugs dude. They only drank alcohol.
Metallica FADE TO BLACK is a awesome song and the lyrics very poetic
@Rayactions Metallica Band uses distortion pedals, such as the MXR 5150 EVH Signature Overdrive, ProCo RAT, and Ibanez Tube Screamer, to make their guitars sound heavier and more distorted.
Delay pedals, that creates an “echo” effect and a sense of space in their solos.
Reverb pedals, to make their guitars sound more like they’re being played in a large room.
Chorus pedals, to make their guitars sound thicker and more full
I've been playing electric guitars for over 27 years I have most of the guitar pedals they use and back in the 90's I was lucky enough to able to buy a Gibson Les Paul Custom in ebony very similar to Kirk Hammett's Gibson LP Custom in ebony that he uses.
That black picture you noticed just before the solo was the guys looking at the album cover art for the black album.
I just saw them , unbelievable it was amazing
You are so close. They said this was to the fans. Great job 🔥
Awesome 👍👍 friend nice reaction. Been fan since 84
This song is a love song, but not a conventional one, it's a song about a person reflecting about themselves being not swept by the feeling, but just flowing with it. I always took it as "hey look, I feel like love makes me a stronger person!".
Also might be love for their band, love for their fans, love for their family, even love for themself, love for this feeling of not caring about what other people thinks of them when they evolve. It's an universal song.
It always be one of my favorite songs ever, period!! 🤘🏼🎶
That picture or poster rather you saw and said “what was that” was the album cover for album this song is in
Hetfield solo's are so freaking amazing . . .
This song pritty much made Metallica main stream. This really open the doors for them next level stuff.👍❤️
This was the last song played in disco's (yeah they were still called that) in late 90's, the one where you get your (often potential) girl and do the slow dance.
I liked your reaction, your aproach to the msg of this song, i liked that, nice.
Probably my favorite Metallica song.
I think this song give me something refreshing mind so i love it
This song is just Legendary
I know people always want you to react to classic songs or older Metallica songs but something like Until It Sleeps would be really cool to get your thoughts on. The subject matter is on the death of his mom and personally them tuning down a half step to better accommodate James' lower voice made this mid to late 90s era my favorite James vocals. His clean voice is so badass on Sleeps
naa
You should do For Whom The Bell Tolls live 1985 Day on the Green.
Hell yeah!!! It's Metallica baby🤘🤘🤘
This is my favourite Metallica song ❤
If Elton John tells you it's one of the greatest songs ever written, Nothing Else Matters
Something else that people need to take into account is that Metallica saw the reaction to the longer songs on the "...And Justice for All" album on the Damaged Justice tour aside from "One" and realized that their setlist got shorter and shorter because of those longer songs, and the audience started getting bored which was a clear indication that they had to write songs that were shorter and got straight to the point.
never missed your videos ,aaaahhh nice day😊
Estranged would be a song I think you would love, intriguing and beautiful. But epic too
One of my favourites
Love the part were they show the veteran
Respect✊️
Would just love to have someone in my life who is as passionate about music as I am.
Any couples out there who listen to music together and go to gigs together…
God damn, you guys are so lucky.
React also to the 2 versions with the San Francisco auditoriums in 1999 and 2020, they are both magical (the most magical version is the 1999 one)
Its great song to introduce Metallica too loved this song and I also love the version cover by Voiceplay as well :)
It sounds like the word you were looking for is "ballad" which was popular for most 80's albums.
The "BLACK" album was released in 91, I would consider this a METALLICA ballad for sure! 🤘🤘
The effect on the guitar is called chorus. It comes from Roland Jazz/Chorus amp they love to use for clean tones.
Keep smiling dude its gorgeous
I would absolutely love it if music reactors did long-form reactions (like 45-60 min) to classic videos like A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica, or the Pantera home videos. I grew up watching those over and over, and it would be amazing to experience them again through new eyes.
If you haven't seen it, you should check out Geoff Castellucci's group Voiceplay who do a great version of this song. They are an a cappella group, but their beatboxer throws in an instrument for fun. I know you love Geoff's bass vocals.
This is the only song Metallica's massive catalog where James does the solo.
That black picture was the album cover
