  • 1. I am recently trying an EXPERIMENTAL way of braking by stepping on the rear wheel by back foot. This alternative method should *ONLY* be suitable for drop-through and big wheel setup. Some demos will be shown in 0:34, 1:53, 2:40, 3:44, 4:30 and 5:08.
    2. I have started practicing pushing mongo for about a week (at the time of recording). I will keep practicing and hopefully learn pushing switch for an efficient LDP ability. More progress video later.
    3. My previous Adidas 3MC VULC shoes were worn out after 1 year from buying (not related to this newly found braking method). I have just bought a new pair of Oxelo Vulca100 from Decathlon😆. So far, I find them comfortable and love to wear them for riding.
    I have been using cruisers for daily commuting purposes since the end of 2020. I really love cruising around in my beautiful Hong Kong city.
    Setup:
    Landyachtz Drop Cat Illuminacion 33
    Orangatang Caguama 85mm (83A)
    No name 50° truck (SHR85A)
    170/60kg
    Captured using Insta360 One X

    I started breaking in a similar manner applying pressure to one of the back wheels with the tip of my toe on my electric shortboard when the battery dies. I like how you use your heel, it seems very stable. My board has extremely wide trucks, so don’t think I can use my heel but maybe I’ll give it a try! Thanks for sharing!

    I really liked your method of real-wheel foot-breaking and was happy with the results, it seemed to slow down much better than regular foot breaking. But then I noticed the burnt rubber smell when stopped, had sticky urethane marks on the grip-tape and saw the "scar" ring on my wheel...

    I feel like braking that way would flatspot your wheels fast AF. I would just glue on some brake soles and start foot braking.

    • @Hxrshmello
      @Hxrshmello 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Hell's favorite Salty Masshole Friction is what would flatspot or make it oval over time. That one wheel would have the most resistance on it causing uneven wear compared to the other three(same thing happens with car tires) Not to mention to get close to a even wear for just that one wheel over course the foot positioning would have to be perfect every single time and the road would have to be level.Would definitely take longer than slides though.

    • @HarryLamHK
      @HarryLamHK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In terms of balancing skill requirements, I think footstop braking should be easier and safer. You may try this method at a very low speed first :)

    • @Matthew-bh8ze
      @Matthew-bh8ze 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      you should try footbraking first due to how at high speeds touching the back tire can really wobble or abruptly stop the board. My tip would be try to put weight on the back/before heel part of the foot on the board and don't drag but let the braking foot gently slide on ground either heel or ball part and slowly put more pressure on the ground. Try to footbrake at slow speed like one push and balancing on the foot board and sliding your foot that is pushing to simulate footbraking until comfortable to go to quicker speeds and actual footbrake.

    Hi Harry Lam!
    I really wanted to know how is the Drop Cat 33 on you? I've been researching that the standing platform is too small. I want to get the Drop Cat 33 for cruising and learn to slide. Can you also do some slide here?

    • @HarryLamHK
      @HarryLamHK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      33" deck has lighter weight and higher mobility when taking the board around crowded street and transports. It is suitable for daily longboarding. When riding, 38" deck must provide higher stability and better freerideing / pushing experience. I think it depends your own situation/life style/city condition.
      My wheels are 85mm, I use the board for distance pushing. Currently, I have not done any freeriding slide yet..

    • @HarryLamHK
      @HarryLamHK  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have just rided Drop Cat 33 and Pranayama. I think Trip and Pranayama are suitable choices for city crusing. Their sizes are short enough for taking around city. They also have long wheelbase for stability. Drop Cat 33/38 are designed for freeride.

    • @HarryLamHK
      @HarryLamHK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I will step on the ground to confidently reduce most of the speed first. Then start trying this new method to control speed. I don't recommend trying the new braking method when the wheel is wet or the speed is too high (you can practice and find your speed limit). Btw, I find the wheel has an implicit "ring mark" after weeks🤣 So, try stepping on different parts of the wheel

    Nothing wrong with pushing Mongo Harry. All accomplished LDPers do it. The old culture that it is wrong to push mongo is outdated. That came about during the street skating days when street tricks were the fashion.
    LDP, commuting and distance skating for exercise require the new technique of ambidextrous pushing.

    That looks pretty awkward and will wear out your shoes in a very limited part of the sole. Why not just foot brake normally and wear out the sole evenly?

    • @HarryLamHK
      @HarryLamHK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As concrete is rough and hard, I think that footbraking decelerate by scratching away the whole shoes permanently. Nearly no heat is produced.
      While braking by rubbing two grip surfaces of shoes and wheel, I think that MORE kinetic energy will be converted into heat energy on both surfaces which can be cooled down by time. Of course, if it is too hot, they still wear out permanently.
      Anyway you are right and it is an experimental method. So far, I find that the heel of brake shoes looks pretty intact, but the brake wheel already has some "ring marks" due to the heat energy. I have to change the brake wheel with the other three wheels regularly.

    how dangerous is this method highspeed?

    • @HarryLamHK
      @HarryLamHK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When your speed is high, if you have the ability to maintain confident balance and you have plenty of time for decelaration, you can gently "touch" the wheel by the heel first. If you can still get the balance, then you can add more pressure to further decelarate to your desired speed. Sometime it fails because the wheel is too wet... Give up and use footbrake if you feel any dangers.
