  • The Idaho BDR is an incredibly unique experience due to the variety of terrain, unpredictable weather, and humbling expanses of true wilderness.
In the summer of 2023, my father and I chose to ride the 1600 mile long Backcountry Discovery Route. This is episode one of our journey.
The day began with bright skies and a solidified plan for the next 14 days, but we soon realized that we would be at the mercy of nature.
Enjoy the video and the 7 episode long series that follows.

The best thing to do when the rain starts and the gumbo appears is to stop and set camp. Best to take it easy and not gumbo out the bikes. Plus the clutches get smoked real quick.
Fun adventures anyway being able to share with your dad.

100%!!! These days when I hit mud like that I’m off the trail and under the tarp or in the tent.
Trying to push on in those conditions is asking for injury and/or damage to the bike…. Had to learn the hard way myself.
      Great footage of your adventure!!

Exactly! same with Nevada and E.Oregon. I live in SW Idaho. If is starts to rain on the Clay, you better put your bike away OR your going down. Its the worst Clay Ive ever dealt with. We tell newby's where I live if it doesn't have rock on it dont even THINK of driving/riding on it till it dries out. The good thing is it only takes a couple hrs, after the rain stops, for it to firm up again

Damn, rough conditions. Good job making it out!
Those bikes look absolutely packed though, would argue you might have over done it with the gear but not sure it would have made any difference in the end with that clay.
Thanks for sharing and great work making it out!

    • @madjack_757
      @madjack_757  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks! The packing was really really tough. Perhaps we could have found a way to reduce the load slightly, but we packed and repacked everything over and over and tried to take off anything we thought we might not need.. the problem with using a dirtbike instead of an ADV bike is that they need a lot of maintenance. For example, I did 3 oil changes and 2 air filter changes to complete this route. That alone takes a side pannier just to pack the tools, parts, and other chemicals.

      Dirt Bike Gambler song
On a hot BDR ride day
For extreme trails bound to nowhere.
I met up with an old guy rider
We were both tired of no pre~ride sleep
      So we took turns a-starin’
At the adventure in the shade
      The curiosity took us
      And he began to speak.
      ~~
He said, “Son, I’ve made a life
Out of seeing clapped out bikes
And knowing what parts are bad
By the way it’s Duct taped on.
So if you don’t mind me sayin’
I can see your out of Duct tape
For a taste of you Gator Aid
      I’ll give you some advise
      ~~
So I handed him my bottle
And he drank down my last swallow
Then he bummed an 8mm socket
And ask me for a ratchet too.
And the entry line got deathly quiet
And his face lost all expression
Said, “If you’re gonna race, boy
You got to race it right
      ~~
You got to know when to hole shot’um
      Know when to clutch’um
      Know when to roost away
And know when to WFO run.
You never count your points lead
      When you’re Beer benchracin’
The’ll be time enough for countin’
      When the Trophy’s dealins’ done
      ~~
      Every Pro rider knows
      That the secret to surviving
Is knowin’ what shit to throw away
And knowin’ what shit to keep.
Cause a heavy right hands a winner,
And very numb hands are losers,
And the best hands you can hope for
Is no arm pump for a grip you can keep.
      ~~
      And when he finished speakin’
He turned towards the signup sheet
Crushed down my Gator Aid bottle
And somewhere in his bench race story,
The old guy rider he broke even
      And in his final words
I found good bullshit that I could keep
      ~~
You got to know when to gass’em
      Know when to power wheelie’um
      Know when to smok’um away
And know when to have yeehaw! fun.
You never count your secret race money
When you’re sittin’ at the parts counter
The’ll be time enough for part$ countin’
After the Wife’s household countin’s done

Me too! It was the first time in my 10 years of riding that the weather really humbled me. I love my XL500, but man I think that mud would have swallowed up any bike.. It was a super unique kind of dirt that was known only in that area for turning to clay when absorbing any water. Once that happened, it was game over because the mud just packs into your drive train. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series! 6 more episodes coming out Sundays and Wednesdays.

    @mototrailz 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Bro same thing happens to me with my 500 1 month. Funny enough the only guy in our group who did not have problem with the mud packing inside the chain and therefore making it skip teeth of the sprocket was the one who had a super loose chain. Note to self if you ride this type of s**t loose the chain way more than usual. But it was scary i thought i broke my gear box 😳

    • @madjack_757
      @madjack_757  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

That sounds gnarly.. Where were you guys riding at? Honestly the loose chain makes sense because the chain picks up the slack as rocks pack into it. Dude busting a gearbox out in the middle of nowhere would be a game ender.

That was some nasty mud! That stuff grinds your sprockets, chain, output seal and everything else it comes in contact with to nubbins. You have to watch it when you spray off a bike with that amount of mud on it, so you don't drive it into the hub seals even more than it already is. I would be pulling all of that apart to clean/lube everything!

Your dad has WAAAAY too much shit on his bike. I rode to Montana and back to Houston, camped every night on trails in Colordao, New Mexico, Wyoming and Montana. Jesus Christ I didn't have nearly as much crap. 1 pair of clothes, 2 socks, rain gear, tents and extra 2 gallons of gas. A phone charger extra batter pack and toolkit. All in a Mosko Moto 40L saddle bag. I mean for fuck sakes man trim the hell down! That first aid kit is ridiculously big. As soon as it starts to rain I set up my tent. I start looking for a camp site 2 hours before dusk. And knowing the weather is so important! Dam this is hard to watch. If you want an adventure you got one.

Man, your trip would have been so much better with helmet intercoms. It is totally different to have a natural conversation with your partner. I had to add some wires to record the audio to the helmet cam so you can hear both conversations, but the rides I went on were someone forgot to bring it or the battery died suddenly really sucked.
