I cannot help but comment on how much this tutorial series has carried me through my experience in making my own custom VRC avatar. What makes this series so special are 3 factors that most other tutorials only have 1 or 2 at best which is being; short but informative, significant but simple to understand, and specialized but also flexible. I was more than lucky to find this series buried beneath the never ending heaps of Blender/VRC/Unity/VTuber tutorials. One more thing that I greatly appreciate about this tutorial series is the compiling of advice/ techniques from other tutorials so instead of having to spend hours of your time figuring out how to do practically anything through endless tutorials, this simple 7 video series puts all of that information into a very efficiently short class course. Ultimately, if it were not for this series I highly doubt I would’ve been as successful as I am. I hope more people like me who are poor but have a lot of ambition can utilize this hidden jewel of TH-cam’s tutorial algorithm.
The shape keys for your full model are excellently done, one can see the massive amounts of effort you have put into it. You will forever be an inspiration for me when I make my vtube avatar.
helpful tip if you didn't know it already, when prepping for your shape keys, it's a good idea to select and save several vertex groups, such as the bottom row of teeth. bottom lip, top lip, area on the sides of the lips, the area under the chin, etc. once those have been saved, you should locate the pivot point of your jaw and set your 3d cursor dead center of it, this will give you a repeatable and anatomically correct pivot for the lower jaw by selecting 3d cursor in the transform pivot point section.
I used this tutorial to make a Vtuber avatar start to finish in around a month, and am now getting into streaming with it. It was very to-the-point and helpful, it made the whole process a lot more palatable. Thanks a ton, keep up doing good stuff!
IMPORTANT NOTE: at 1:11:14 i was reading the wrong number, my tri count was actually 161,664, NOT 81,000 (which was my number of vertices). look at your triangle number. also, for anyone wanting to get into more advanced stuff, especially with vseeface's functionality, there isn't really a channel out there better than suvidriel, check 'em out: th-cam.com/channels/fSidh9k8xaVAi1JTzFH30Q.html

I think the bone issue around minute 57:20 is because in blender you resized or rotated the bones in pose mode instead of edit mode, go back to blender and select the whole armature in pose mode and press "alt+g, alt+r and alt+s" and se if the same thing happens, in that case there's a trick change the pose position to rest position.

Thank you SO much! Your series of vids have been extremely, extremely useful in navigating the wonky maze of programs and features to make it all work out. I'm still playing around, but finally got something usable after so long. Rock on, Mako!
Multiple meshes can absolutely correspond to one shapekey. Or, technically, you can have multiple meshes correspond to their own shapekeys with the same name, which will be treated as one shapekey by most exported formats. If you keep it in Blender, I'd advise using a driver to hook the shapekey on all meshes to a single bone, so you don't have to go and change *all of them*. On export, pretty much any format worth its salt will merge all the same-named shapekeys.
Hey Mako Ray, it took me a while due to other stuff in life, but I finally have my personal V-Tuber model built from scratch in Blender, it is working thanks to your tutorial series! a little trick for setting up bone exclusions or just inspector in general. Select all the bones you want to add, then drag them onto the title (so Exclusions for example, the actual word), inspector will automatically create an element for each.(So no need to change the size and drag them all in one by one). They will add to the bottom of the list, so if you start decreasing the size, it usually always will delete the last in the list. (almost a year later, but this is really helpful for tedious things, unity has a lot of these sort of tricks n shortcuts where you would think wouldn't have any functionality at all lol)
