i just can't get enough of the different and awesome sounds in that video... (minus the whirlybird in the beginning) i play it almost once a week. when the second train goes by, my whole floor rumbles from the bass of the diesels from my subwoofer.
Beautiful shot! Nice meet, too. Those are sometimes hard to plan. I'm so glad the 4449 was the lead. Nothing against the 844, it's just the 4449 is so much prettier! :) Keep an eye out for the 4449's 2008 Holiday Express videos in a couple more weeks...
2 of the world's largest operating Non articulated steam locomotives in the world coupled together! Wow! I hope theses beasts keep running until the end of the world!
@Jemalacane steam hp is classified as tractive effort 71,173 lbs the lead diesel are sd60m series at a hp rating at 3,800 the other 2 are es44s at a hp rating at 4,000
Great Video. I thought the woman in the white top was funny - she didn't even look at the locos until they were right there. She most probably thought - 'Oh, its just another Northern.....' !
The SP4449 has 80 inch drivers and 5500hp which gives it a top speed of around 110mph. In the video it's going about half that speed, maybe even a bit slower. I don't know about the 844.
Yhea really. I just got a model of the 611 and I am thinking about getting the 844. Did the 611 and 844 ever run together? If so I can double head the models like this but with the 611.
Correct the UP Challenger 3985 is 4-6-6-4 search HI-Ball should be one of the top videos shows it running at close to seventy on its way back to Denver
Nice job! What was with the lady taking a picture of the chopper when the steam engine is right next to her? She is at the right in the beginning of the video.
I noticed that. Nobody wants to hear a helicopter when you can hear double headed steam. I also noticed that UP 4380 had a 5 chime horn, only about 40 of the SD70M's do.
Although some steamers may be more powerful on paper, a modern diesel has more workable power. A steamer develops peak horsepower near it's top speed only. At low speeds it's just a fraction of it's peak rating. Diesel-electrics can produce peak power from low speed to maximum speed. That being said, I still would rather see a steamer.
Old School meets Modern Machines.
Great catch of both trains.
Awesome shot of the SP 4449 and the UP 844.
I really wish I could ride that train.

I like the way that lady at the beginnings ignoring the train and filming the helicopter or something lol (at least it looks that way)
cool Double header! That freight train was mosting fast. Great video!
It does have a K5LA but it's engine 4380.
2 of the world's largest operating Non articulated steam locomotives in the world coupled together! Wow! I hope theses beasts keep running until the end of the world!
good thing it came before the frieght!
sethamtrak I agree...
Thanks! I tell myself that the lady is taking a picture of the kid next to her. That way I still maintain my hope for humankind.
love the evolution from old to new
and I see a future locomotive engineer on his father's shoulders...
wonderful sounds there and nice camera work ... amazing what can happen in two minutes ... sure were a lot of flat wheels on that double stack...
awesome train video

The 4449 is operational and usually runs a couple excursions a year, sometimes more.
A1 Doubleheaded MAINLINE Steam Meet!! over the top man
Great Video. I thought the woman in the white top was funny - she didn't even look at the locos until they were right there. She most probably thought - 'Oh, its just another Northern.....' !
that was way cool, vintage meets modern
It's the Cowlitz Street rail crossing. I was north of the crossing.
Awesome sight to behold.
I noticed that too. It also cycles slower. They must have dropped the voltage to it.
Woot, 4449's coming to Michigan in July!!!!

That freight train looks just like the one that derailed in Dupont recently!
Awesome video. Thanks!
Good find. Thanks.
Nice job! What was with the lady taking a picture of the chopper when the steam engine is right next to her? She is at the right in the beginning of the video.
Everyone stops tapeing when the modern UP comes! LOL.
nice meeting of past and present
Did the crossing gate hit that dude's truck?
Nice timing for the frieght to come in
Those UP SD70MAC's are just photobombing the shot. They're just upset that they don't get as much attention... lol
Wow, train ended right on time!
I noticed that. Nobody wants to hear a helicopter when you can hear double headed steam.

Very true. I think most of the trains in that area pass at 50 to 70 mph
how come Union Pacific never uses the ditch light flashers?
Thanks for the comments and ratings!!
What are the odds of getting that shot. Even had an ACe trailing the consist on the freight.
Thas cool as hell!
Who owns the #1218?
AWESOME!
Old meets new.
Great video!!!
Knowing UP, it's probably because ditch light flashers cost .000002 cents more than regular ditch lights.
I think the chopper was chasing for the local news. I was a bit disappionted because it fouled up some good audio. Oh well.
It's owned by Norfolk & Southern but on loan to the Museum.
Len.
now we can only hope that N&W 611 gets out of the VMT and back onto the main.
i hop they do this agian

i wanted to kno about that too. im mean CSX NS CONRAIL use all the time .
Funny- The containers on the southbound freight were full of garbage. LOL.
nice video the meet was a nice touch
LOL that old lady doesn't care.
Nice, but I wish that the dumb Helos would stay out of the area. It tends to Spoil the Unique Sound of an approaching Steam train
@powerlinefixer oh hell yea!
No the 611 & 844 never doubleheaded.
No. It just looks like it did.
1218 is not gutted, where the heck did you ever hear that? incorrect information. I belong to the chapter down there.
Len.
these really put diesels to shame
@jedihunter80 lol totally
Did anyone note the comparison b/t those majestic and beautiful steam locomotive in comparison to the drab diesel that followed at the end?
Random intermodal train!
are you sure? They could be loaded with goods made in Taiwan, China, Singapore or Japan
true but a nuclear waste train has the highest priority overall
you gotta love how everybody walks away when the diesel engines show up.
ok, shows over, nothing to see here...lol
Yeah, like I said, they were full of garbage.
to hear this while my bluegrass rails CD is playing gives mew waves of goosebumps!!!!
Was probably a 'hot' freight- if it was a UPS train, they have priority above anything else on the line.
It's the Cowlitz Street rail crossing. I was north of the crossing
