Just watched this again a year later, and it's still amazing! Some people dislike zoomed in shots, but I think they bring out the massive size of the trains. It's also fun to watch track side train buffs continue to step farther and farther back as the beast approaches. Thanks for posting.
+sgtwylde1996 -- Nah, that's just the sound of my brain straining at its moorings as I try to wrap my head around this amazing machine! : P Imagine-- at some point 4014 will be on the head end in scenes like this (although I'm not sure how far out of its historic haunts the Big Boy can navigate, weight/wheelbase-wise...) Cheers.
AMESOME VIDEO. I never had the chance to see Steam giants in person how ever this video Made me feel like I was right there train side. Great Cameraman work. My favorite scene is when The 844 and 3985 are Crossing the MacArthur Bridge; I felt like I took a trip back in time to where steam power still dominated the rails. I am the son of 2 locomotive engineers and have watched many train videos. That being said I personally believe that this was the best Capturing of live steam. Thank You
3985 is down for a complete rebuild like 4014. It may never run again. The steam shop did order extra parts for 3985 if they were the same as the ones being replaced on 4014.
Ed Dickens has said that the Challenger will run again, it just needs a good rebuilding. The 844 took them about a year once it was really hit hard, so the Challenger probably will take more than that since it's an articulated. My guess is about 2021 or 22. I hope they come to Arkansas.
Superb video Dan and very well edited! I particularly liked the passing shot at Hampton Avenue St Louis, although the Eureka and acceleration away from Pacific shots run it close! I was trying to guess what all the cars were and assumed the first two behind 3985 are water tanks. Are there two support cars behind the water tanks? Great camera work, thanks for sharing it. Ken
Absolutely wonderful footage, and great camera work! May I please use this audio for an upcoming video I'm working on? I will credit you as the audio's owner, and have a link to your video, in addition to your channel.
I have an excursion set up to be pulled by Pere Marquette 1225 on March 15th 2014. It will be her first excursion in almost five years. More info on my TH-cam channel.
they actually have 5 steamers on their roster. 838 (parts for 844), 844, 5511 (last of its kind a T1), 3985, and 4014 (UP already owns him) Only 844, 3985, and 4014 will be operable. 838 has been a donor since retirement and 5511 is a drag engine (low speed high tractive force helper). For the next project I would vote for either the turbine in Utah or #9000 as it is the height of non articulated design. They actually outperformed most articulated locos on the UP til the 4-6-6-4s came around.
5511 is finally being sent somewhere to be restored. Also, 3985 is about to get another chance when it gets sent to the same place 5511 is going. 9000 will unfortunately never be brought back as the tracks today can’t handle the long frame, and also because of the third cylinder making maintenance horrible.
It's a Challenger. The Challenger class locomotives had a 4-6-6-4 wheel configuration, whilst the Big Boy class locomotives had a 4-8-8-4 wheel configuration/
Very nice footage. Couldn't help but notice the petrol price at the BP station, 3.59 per gallon? That would barely buy half that in England, no wonder you lot drive round in big trucks!
To William Roberts; There are thousands upon thousands of miles of track in North America no company could even begin to fence the rails. Britain is pretty small and easy to fence...Hal
True! That said, I think that most of our trains are also faster. Even provincial commuter trains will get up to 80/90 once they get out of the cities, and the thought of a cow or a deer mooching onto the line in front of an Inter City Train doing its design speed of 140 mph doesn't bear thinking about!
Both normally run with a diesel in tow, and is controlled by the engineer of the steamer. The only thing they use the diesel for is dynamic braking. But running mainlines, it is also available in case of breakdown to avoid blocking trains that will be along all too soon. They occasionally get permission to run without one but it isn't often. In this case, I suspect 844 was acting as backup for 3985 :-) (About 15 yrs. ago, 844 pushed a stalled diesel freighter up Archer Hill!)
rpgmurphy That and I also think it has to do with the locomotives being apart of Union Pacific's own steam program which I think gives them a few liberties if It's their tracks.
David Ng actually a lot of 3985 shots in this was with Ed as engineer. You can tell the difference by the whistle pattern. Ed lets the whistle sing with all she’s got while Steve keeps it quiet. You can also see Ed leaning out of the cab in at least two shots with 3985.
It's amazing how you guys are allowed to stand on mainline track. In the UK, you're not even allowed on a station without a platform ticket and all the lines are fenced off. You're not allowed anywhere near the track on preserved lines, either.
I bet the lady with the bag at 5.18 is putting pennies on the line so they will be crushed and she can give them to her Grandchildren as mementos of 'the last steam train that came through this town'! Nice idea if it's true!
Yeah, Brilliant! Stepping across one live main, turning one's back to said live main in order to stoop over another live main while a train is approaching just for a silly souvenir?
There aren't really any modern technologies to update them with. Advancements in steam locomotive technology stopped when we stopped building them, which isn't that long after engines like 844 were built. Engines like that still represent the pinnacle of steam locomotive technology, and likely always will.

I like that the big boy is back, but I don’t like how Union Pacific basically just threw the challenger away, very wrong in my eyes, they are technically very similar, but to me both locomotives are very unique in their own ways

The sound of those whistles is so haunting and beautiful.
I ordered the new vision line #3985 and seeing these videos just makes me so happy knowing it’s coming in a few months

Superbly shot & positioned video, thanks very much! It's a shame 3985 is going to be off the rails for some time!
Thanks for sharing this awesome steam footage, loved the locations and shots!
it's amazing these things are still in working order...let alone being able to run at nearly their top speeds.

As of May 20th 2012: the 3985 is getting some minor running gear and boiler work done. They said it should be operational around that time next year.
Still not ready, because 4014's restoration was a priority. It should be back by 2022 the latest.
UPDATE: it is leaving UP.
Excellent work! Great shots, great editing.

AJ Jackson The diesel powers the car behind it.
@@phillipwalling7470 no it doesn’t. Freight engines don’t have head end power. Separate power cars on the train do that.

the only steam locomotive that UP had is only No. 844, No. 3985 comes next and donates to RRHMA, then No. 4014 comes

Are they updated with existing technologies?
not really, probably replacements or new parts, plus new technologies would take all of the fun out of it :)
I mean, maybe they have a radio equipped if something happens, but other than that you're right.
Other than being oil fired and the crew having radios, unlikely.
There aren't really any modern technologies to update them with. Advancements in steam locomotive technology stopped when we stopped building them, which isn't that long after engines like 844 were built.
