The discipline of those drivers to give each other room when necessary is outstanding. Well driven race.

No crashes at full speed the entire race, it was amazing to see. And only two and a half crashes at speed in practice/qualifying. ;)
They know their life is on the line for 500 laps !

As a Scotsman who's new to IndyCar this is way more exciting than Formula One
The way Power cut his way up through the field at the start reminded me of Tony Kanaan doing the same in 2010
Tony is a beast when the green is on. Back in 2017 There's an onboard from Fernando Alonso where his Ganassi #10 just dives into turn 1 leaving lots of cars behind. I love his aggressive starts

Simon is truly a talented driver and champion. He charged to the front thru actual passes and not just by pit strategy.

INDYCAR has such great racing on the ovals, I just don’t understand why they can’t draw crowds outside of Indy. I really miss seeing them at Michigan Speedway, I went to every IndyCar race at Michigan from 1987 until the last one in 2007.
I agree, I like ovals too, would like to see a mix of 1/3 each of oval, road and street courses. The average person watches an oval race similar to the way NBC broadcasts it, focused on the leaders, and well, lets be honest this can get boring as everyone follows in line. While there are times watching the leaders is crucial, a lot of racing during the race happens in the middle and back as demonstrated by this video of the start. Watching the front 3 rows was interesting, but watching racing going on behind those rows is also very interesting and can be more exciting. Example, Power passing all of those cars and then he has enough confidence in Marco Andretti (and Marco's spotter) as he comes out of turn 2 to come up on his right side knowing (praying?) he won't pinch him into the outside wall.

As a F1 fan I so jealous of these amazing onboards. Perfectly centered camera angle and 360º view is just a joy.
I remember seeing/hearing these guys for the first time on pole day, 1991. We walked up thru the front straight, infield stands when one of the Penske cars went by. I'd only ever seen them on television at that time, and when I saw them go by, my mouth literally fell open without my command to do so. I had no idea. I was hooked from that point on. I got out of racing about 20 years ago but still love to see this stuff.
This was my 46th Indy 500 and I have never seen them stacked up like that going into turn one. Still can't believe they made it!

Can you tell me more about spotters?
@@nolimits4942 Each car has (I think) at least 2 spotters who are up on top of the structures on opposite ends of the track. As the car goes around the track, the spotters are in radio communication with the driver. The spotters will warn their driver when another car is in close proximity to them and also will coach the driver about track conditions (such as oil or debris on the track). The spotters are some of the most important people at the track during a race and they have many important duties for the driver and team that I haven't gone into here.
I am amazed at how much lifting and give and take was taking place.

I love the guy, I hope he wins more championships, but Dixon needs to be reprimanded for these jacked up starts. He did the same thing in the 2nd Texas race, causing a huge crash.

Well done, I love this. Please do it for every year that you have video! Then obtain job security for a while by doing it for every restart in every race, I think it would gain you a bunch of fans and please your current fans. A lot of curating and editing, but documenting history is important, and this is much more impressive than traditional race videos.
It would be interesting to see this on a row of synchronized screens, one screen per driver, ordered by the running order at each moment. There's your next exhibit at the museum. I won't even charge a royalty beyond being credited and getting occasional VIP tickets. ;-)
Rather than brute-force creation of all possible such videos, maybe do a trial project just for the years Castroneves won? Then if that's a hit, do Foyt, Unser Sr, and Mears using CGI/gaming technology being fed actual race date from film and TV footage?
Likewise, creating a CGI in-car version of the start of every race, at least from the winner's persepctive, would be pretty interesting. For pole sitters who kept the lead at the start, and won, have the camera look behind them.
2023 and F1 still don't have that level of onboard... Indy realisation is on point !
I remember Scott Sharp was going to be the next hot driver. He qualified on pole and wrecked going into turn one on the first lap.

Castroneves’ gear changes sounded harsh and slow at the start while Palou’s car just didn’t want to turn in at the 1st corner (probs dirty air cause his car was a rocket all day). Edit: Majority were pretty cautious or patient at the start for once this 500.

I wish Indycar racing had the popularity of NASCAR. I much prefer open wheel cars to NASCARS, which came about because of moonshining. Carrying alcohol, running from the police at night, under the moon light. Can't get any more southern than that, hence it's popularity in the south.
IndyCar is popular world wide, Nascar only in the US. Most of us here in the comment section are not Americans.
I'm American and Southern... but I'll take IndyCar over NASCAR any day. The quality of racing is so much better. I'll even take IndyCar over F1.
Now, Australian Supercars? That's right up there with IndyCar. Great stuff.

Almost everyone who went mid or high, lost the position gained within 2 turns. Watch the video again and take note. How is no one noticing this?
Most Nascar boys would last about 2 seconds driving open wheels in traffic at those speeds.
Idk, Kurt Bush finished 6th in the Indy 500 in 2014 and he was a rookie, while Dario Franchiti and Sam Hornish Jr were not very good in NASCAR after they were the cream of the crop in indycar. Don’t get me wrong, I love and respect Indy drivers, but NASCAR is not easy either, they drive a lot closer for a lot longer at 200mph at the super speedways. They’re very good drivers.

I feel like the bar right in the middle of the aeroshield would be super annoying. I'd rather have to bars, only slightly off set to the left and one to the right. Maybe at the 10 o'clock and 2 O clock positions
I think it kinda ends up being like your nose. You don’t really see it unless you look directly at it.
With two eyes, your brain pieces together the view without the bar.
Oh gotcha
Put a finger in front of your nose and look ahead. You see it double but transparent. If you put two bars, youd end up with seeing four transparent bars.

There is absolutely no reason to make a pass on the first lap except for maybe the first couple of rows. You gain almost nothing and risk everything when you are midpack racing 4 wide.
