Her mother did what she had to do to save her kids even if it meant what she had to do to Fancy. But in the end Fancy did become a lady and is opening up a safe haven for girls.

Just to add more context, the song was original written by Bobbie Gentry in the late 60s as a feminist statement. The story telling style is Southern Gothic. The mother has a terminal illness and she worked out a deal for the 18 year old Fancy to become an escort.
Based on the first line of the Chorus people think she was forced, but the second line “if you want out, well, it’s up to you” is the option.
Just like “The Night the Lights went out in Georgia”, Reba took an old hit and breathed new life into it. But sometimes it’s hard to put perspective into it based on the time it was written.

Because of the way she emphasizes it and you know unlike her innocent daughter exactly what she means by being nice. It just isn't the norm for a mother to be telling her daughter this, usually it's the opposite.

What I like about the song is the message a poor girl had to do what she had to do to survive. However she not only survived, she flourished and made it big. She went from doing what needed to be done to owning everything she dreamed of like a Georgia mansion and a New York flat. Also in the end she forgives for mother for what she had do but can now see why she did what she did to do right for her daughter.

Saw this live a few times back in the 90s what an incredible show she puts on. She came driving up on stage in that same type of car to start the show off with this song. Then I met her afterwards she was really down to earth. Not too fond of the new country music but I loved this older stuff. She is my favorite country singer of all time.

Billy, a couple of things...this is Reba’s MOST popular song...why? It doesn’t matter where you came from; it matters how you treat people on the way up. It’s empowering! To fill out a little more of your Reba repertoire - check out “Is there Life Out There” - in THAT video her husband is played by Huey Lewis

Reba got a lot of hate when she decided to record this, because of the story behind the song. But she did it anyway.

I am not surprised, it is a hard so to listen to and the video is as well. Reba's 30th Anniversary Rumor Has It album has three versions of it.

And now it's become her signature song. With all due respect to Bobby Gentry, this song is now Reba's, just like how "Hurt" was originally recorded by Trent Reznor and then Johnny Cash did his version

Technically it's not child trafficking because Fancy was 18 years old, the age of consent. It's just sad but also to show that no matter how bad things are, you do what you have to do to get out of that. It's more of the plight what women have had to go through, since forever, to survive. Little girls being sold out to older men for their own satisfaction. But for Fancy, she became who she was but she still made sure that she made the decisions, they weren't made for her. That's kinda what the message is, at least what I interpret from it. 😎👍
