    Besides the fires that swept through the park several years ago, most of the dead trees are the result of pine bark beetles. They burrow under the bark, lay eggs which in turn hatch and the larva eat away at the tree eventually killing it. As you can see they‘ve done massive damage. I was stationed at Ellsworth AFB from 1976-1981 and back then the bark beetles hadn’t reached the park yet so there were way more trees. Additionally winters were much colder back then with temps reaching -40f. Due to global warming, the temps rarely get that low anymore which allows the beetles to survive the winter. I currently visit the area at least once a year , sometimes more as it‘s my and my wife’s favorite place of all our many travel destinations. Cheers

      I was at eafb exactly the same yrs brother. CE department..... There were some unreal cold temps n blizzard's... Don't agree with you on global warming... That's something to create fear n money laundering... Seen a snow drift go over a highway over pass. Not only blocking I-90 traffic but the road on top!!! My only regret was not staying in another 15 yrs...

    If you are coming from the west, your first stop should be the Vore Buffalo Jump on I-90, then the DC Booth fish hatchery in Spearfish, then drive Spearfish Canyon, then Deadwood for a shootout in the street, then south through Lead and the Black Hills, not around the Black Hills on I-90,south to the Keystone, Hill City, Custer area. Weeks worth of things to see there.

    How many days were these things seen over? How long would a family need to complete these things?

    • @workingweekender
      @workingweekender  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This was all pretty much over the course of one day. I am not sure how long it might take a family to visit everything we saw here. In this particular visit with just myself and my dad, we were able to see all this without feeling rushed at all, and we were even finished with everything before the sun set. So I imagine it could potentially be possible even with smaller kids

    • @jaynelson8304
      @jaynelson8304 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Minimum three days. They just visited a few of the many sites. Spearfish Canyon Road, Needles Highway, Deadwood, Mammoth site, and for pure touristy stuff, Reptile Gardens, Bear Country, and Cosmos. Don't miss the lighting ceremony every evening at Mt Rushmore.

    I find it strange you said you can skip Mt Rushmore.... so a family from "NJ" should drive to SD in a once in a lifetime trip should skip it because you may have seen many times yourself... it's like don't go to NYC and see the statue of liberty... or avoid Broadway. You could said after seeing it once... you may not want to see it again???

    • @workingweekender
      @workingweekender  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I say that more to provide an impact for not skipping Custer State Park. So that a family from NJ doing a once-in-a-lifetime road trip to South Dakota can have an awareness of Custer State Park and its vicinity to Mount Rushmore. I know of too many people that drive out of their way to see Rushmore and don’t know about Custer SP or what it has to offer. I’ve also only been to Mount Rushmore this one time, not many (if I’ve seen it many times myself, I probably wouldn’t be saying to skip it 😉)

    Mount Rushmore is free to get in. $10 fee is for parking. Hitch a ride and walk right in.

    • @workingweekender
      @workingweekender  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’d rather not hitch a ride, but thanks for the advice 🙂

    • @scootypuffjr.
      @scootypuffjr. ปีที่แล้ว

      @workingweekender the first year I went there, there were about 3 or 4 long haired hippy looking dudes at the turnout where you can see Washington's profile, not too far from the Rushmore entrance.. They were flagging me down and wanting to jump in the back of my pickup so they could get in free. I had my daughter with, so that didn't happen lol.

      Your parking pass at Mr. Rushmore is also good for a year (or that calendar year…not sure which) making return visits at no addl cost. Highly recommend attending the evening lighting ceremony,

    • @scootypuffjr.

      @moonpup69 We usually stay near Custer for a week every year. It isn't uncommon for us to swing by Mt. Rushmore 3 times or more that week. My daughter loves the energy/vibe there. The lighting ceremony is a must.

    I was enjoying your video until you started talking about devils tower was “200 million years old”. Really?? No… it’s not more than about 10,000 according to God’s word. Too bad you didn’t leave off the fake “evolution” nonsense.

      Hi @yarddogjones3914,
      Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I understand that we may have different views on the age of Devil's Tower and the Earth. My intention was never to cause frustration or discomfort, but rather to share information as I understand it.
      It's important for us as Christians to communicate with love and patience, especially when discussing topics that can be divisive. A non-Christian reading our exchange might become more resistant to our message if they sense anger or defensiveness. We can share our beliefs without creating barriers.
      When you wrote your comment, did you believe it would help change my perspective? Sometimes, a gentle approach can be more effective in encouraging meaningful dialogue.
      If you're interested, here's an article that discusses different views on the age of the Earth within the Christian community: www.christianity.com/wiki/bible/how-old-is-the-earth.html (you may need to copy and paste; I'm not sure if links work in TH-cam comments). It explores various perspectives, which might be enlightening for both of us.
      There are a lot of unanswered questions for us as humans. We cannot know it all; frankly we really should not want to know it all. But we can have faith in the One who does. There are a lot of unknown details which the Bible does not provide straightforward answers, and that is okay. At the end of the day, the most important message that it does clearly provide is that of the good news that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died for our sins and was resurrected, offering salvation and eternal life to all who believe in Him. Through His sacrifice, we are forgiven and reconciled to God. And that this gift of grace is available to everyone, inviting us into a loving relationship with God.
      Have a good day,
      Rachel
