DRIVING IRON MOUNTAIN ROAD South Dakota | Custer State Park | Black Hills National Forest

- Iron Mountain Road in South Dakota is a 17-mile scenic drive in the Black Hills. On this challenging drive you will experience 314 curves, 14 switchbacks, 3 pigtails and 3 one lane tunnels. Iron Mountain Road winds its way through Custer State Park and the Black Hills National Forest, passing Mount Rushmore National Monument. We like to drive Iron Mountain Road from south to north, as you then have excellent views as you approach Mount Rushmore.
Iron Mountain Road was built in 1933 under the direction of Peter Norbeck. This magnificent road brings visitors through beautiful Black Hills scenery and through narrow tunnels that frame Mount Rushmore. At the top of the 5,445-foot summit, you can stop at the Peter Norbeck overlook where you have beautiful views of Mount Rushmore and the surrounding Black Hills.
Iron Mountain Road is part of U.S. Route 16A and is not maintained during the winter months. This road is narrow, and parts of the road are not recommended for RVs and large trailers. Drivers should be aware of the tunnel sizes in the park. The narrowest of the three tunnels is the Scovel Johnson Tunnel at 10 feet 9 inches wide by 11 feet high.
Custer State Park, South Dakota is a beautiful park and wildlife reserve of approximately 71,000 acres in the Black Hills. Custer State Park is known for its amazing landscapes, scenic drives, and a free roaming bison herd. The size of the bison herd varies slightly from year to year but averages approximately 1400 bison.

The bison herd at Custer State Park truly is magnificent. Generally the bison are calm, but they sometimes can become upset with the cars or park visitors and can become very dangerous. So you always want to stay in your vehicle and keep plenty of distance if at all possible. Iron Mountain Road is a really beautiful drive in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It is one of our favorites!
I certainly wouldn't be making eye contact or edging the car towards any of the Buffalo? Bison? (You said both). They certainly have the right of way. I am always amazed at the stupidity of some tourists who think, even presented with previous evidence, that they are tame. I don't think I'd be there on a motorbike or trike like they were. The views of Mount Rushmore were amazing. I like that they have it so you get a different view after each tunnel. That tight turn back under the road was beautiful. There must be a weight limit I would think. 76f, that would be wonderful just about now. I loved the video. Thanks for sharing Anita.
Technically they are bison. But here in the states we tend to us the words bison or buffalo interchangeably. The herd here is always beautiful to watch and yes I cringe every time I see someone get out of their car for a closer picture. They are wild animals and can run very fast and they need to be respected. When we had gone out for an evening walk, we came across a huge male by himself in the meadow, right near the path. We walked WAY around him and didn't disturb him. Yes I agree that 76F would be lovely right now! It is -4F here at the moment. Take care!

I guess I do sound calm. I think it is because I have seen the bison here numerous times over the years. I certainly wouldn't be calm if I wasn't inside the safety of our truck! Loved the story of the "Close Encounter of the Buffalo Kind!" Loved the switchbacks and views of Mt. Rushmore. Custer State Park is one of the most beautiful parks in the US. Love it and you and your husbands drive!
Thanks! This is such a beautiful drive. We have to drive it whenever we are visiting the Black Hills. Yes the buffalo encounter a few years ago was very scary. It was very dark and we came around a curve and there was a huge male buffalo right in our path. I slammed on the brakes and came within about 3 feet of hitting him. It is such a beautiful park.
WOW~What a lovely drive through Iron Mountain Road through the Black Hills...those tunnels are amazing how they frame Mt Rushmore on the way out...wonder if there are any accidents of people not paying attention while looking at the mountain...So many buffalo...amazing and lucky that they didn't get too close to dent the car! That is such a beautiful drive! I love how the tunnels frame Mt. Rushmore! We haven't been on that road since 2013. It's crazy how the buffalo just roam the road. Even at 25 mph, that can be fast when you drive up on them 😮 You really had a beautiful day there!

Such a beautiful mountain roads. I get used to curvy roads in NC, but so much details you mentioned, for instance the numbers of switchbacks, may make me car sick..hahha joking.

Isn't it cool to drive through one way tunnel. wow it is rock!!! 12:38 I went through long one in KY, and some had to back up. It was so scary to watch car backing up in the dark tunnel

I would have to take dramamine before embarking on the 314 curves and 14 switchbacks in 17 miles. But it definitely looks worth it. Such beautiful scenery as you drive along Iron Mountain Road. Yes the buffalo are wild. They live in Custer State Park which is also a wildlife game reserve. They are free to roam wherever they want in the park. They do use the road at times when they are walking between meadows. You just have to wait and let them pass. I hope you are having a great day!

This is so nice to experience but dangerous at the same time and “yield” is the most important to pass this place. The road is very curvy but so peaceful to drive while watching the beautiful scenery. I think the buffalo is the one who got scared more and one of the reasons why they became very protective around them. Peter Norbec has a spectacular view especially watching the mountains. I LOVE the way you laugh after you bite your apple :) It would be to hard to drive if there is another vehicle in the opposite side. Thank you so much for bringing us with you, really appreciate it ❤

This is probably our favorite drive in the Black Hills. Another great one is The Needles Highway. The bison are always so amazing to see. Usually you can find them on Iron Mountain Road or the Wilderness Drive. The visitor center at Custer State Park can usually tell you where they are located on a given day. I hope you have a great time!
