    is it possible to transition a contemporary design ground floor to an industrial modern design up the attic? if yes, could you do the transition starting at the stairs and how could they tie-in...thanks for the advice...

    • @UlaBurgiel1
      @UlaBurgiel1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hi Gemicans, it really depends on a project and the specific design. Contemporary style can look very different in different homes but generally your idea to start the transition at the stairs is good. If you use similar materials for both floors (for example all the metal elements including handles on the ground floor are black and they match the stairs and metal finishes in the attic) this should work. I would also make sure the wood finishes are consistent: make them light grey for example, then you can definitely mix styles. If finishes are completely different on these floors I would separate it completely and have each part of the staircase match the current floor and its style. Are you a designer or working on you own home?

    • @gemicans
      @gemicans 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@UlaBurgiel1 I'm working on my parents old home and i lean more on the Industrial modern design to have it in the attic expansion. I'll probably go for your suggestion on "metal elements including handles on the ground floor are black" and work my way little by little on your suggestion at the ground floor to make both floors work. I work in a Power Station as an engineer so probably that explains why i love the design :-)

    • @UlaBurgiel1
      @UlaBurgiel1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sounds like a great project. The industrial style is one of my favourites. Working in the power station must give you so much great inspiration! You could take some photos there and put it on the walls as oversized art (100x70cm and bigger, black&white). Glad you are going for my suggestion and good luck with the project!

      @UlaBurgiel1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Matthew, thanks for getting in touch. Combining style can sometimes be difficult. The most important thing in this case is to stick to: one type of metal (don't mix nickel finish with black and gold, stick to one - black matt is a great modern choice), one type of wood (for example grey light oak) and limit the amount of textures. Good luck!!

    • @UlaBurgiel1
      @UlaBurgiel1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Deann, sure, I know that not everyone likes grey floors. I always recommend going for as cool, not saturated tones you’re comfortable with. Natural light wood is absolutely fine, especially now when scandi vintage furniture pieces are making a comeback. If as you say it’s not super gold (yellow looking floor will make your kitchen look more countryside) - go for it! Ula

    Thanks for all the information! They're very helpful. I live in New York and travel to London very often and I have always been a fan of the industrial design of many restaurants in London.
    I have a question tho. You mentioned open floor plan is an important element. Is it possible to have an industrial modern look for a closed floor plan if open floor plan isn't a possibility? Most apartments in Manhattan still have a closed floor plan, unlike those in DUMBO/Brooklyn Heights, which were converted from a warehouse.

    • @UlaBurgiel1
      @UlaBurgiel1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi J T, thanks for getting in touch. Yes, we are lucky here in London to have all these industrial looking restaurants. I love them too! Of course, I realise that there isn't a lot of these ideal open space lofts around. London flats are also quite small and closed off. To make the best out of it and turn it into an industrial "studio" I would recommend adding a lot of floor-to-ceiling large mirrors - preferably covering the entire wall. I recently used a dark grey tinted mirror on a project and it made the space look twice as large. This should help a lot. Another way to make a small flat/room feel industrial is to paint one wall black and hang a few pendant lights very close to the wall so the light projects against the wall. Say hi to NY from me. I'm missing it! ;)

    Love industrial elements but the lack of color makes for a very monotonous design scheme. For contrast I would recommend large colorful abstract paintings. Same for pillows, fabrics, draperies. The right color adds a lot of life and warmth to what is, ostensibly, a hard looking design. Overuse of black, for me, is simply off putting. Ditto for the overuse of the Edison lightbulb look. I also believe that the open plan kitchen is a trend that has seen its day. This is something that came about in the 1970's and nobody ever questioning why it was a *thing*.
