  • Erasers not only help us to correct mistakes they can be used as a drawing utensil as well. Here are the top 3 erasers that Mr Otter Studio uses for drawing, as well as a comparison to see how they erase next to each other. Having a good eraser can make a world of difference in your drawings. My personal favorite is the Gum eraser. In the end, use what you have and can afford. Enjoy!

I don't use my kneaded eraser enough. I really like how easy it is to lighten areas without having to completely erase. Moo brand eraser is really good for large areas and it has little shedding. My favorite 'eraser pen' is the Staedtler Mars plastic. I preferred it over the pentel click eraser I had. It just erases really well.

I mostly use kneaded erasers, but next art store haul I will definitely pick up a gum eraser . I lived and worked worked in NYC, where there were so many choices for art shops. I currently live in Florida, after my mother fell ill and I needed to care for her. Not many choices for art shops here, most artist go to Micheals for their art supplies.

I mostly use my kneaded eraser and my Tombow Mono Zero mechanical eraser which I think uses a narrow vinyl eraser but I also love using gum erasers. Tombow is just amazing for getting minute/thin highlights. I love kneaded erasers most and they're just a great way to release a bit of stress when starting a new sketchbook or blank page, just sit there and play with it 'til inspiration strikes! Unfortunately though, they smell like feet! lol I have yet to try electrical erasers but I hear they can be a bit harsh to the paper but I bought one and am looking forward to trying it.

I stopped using rubber erasers because they kept running my papers (like tearing my papers and leaving bad smudge marks) so I switch to vinyl and I love it. I get clean eraser lines, I don't have to worry about the eraser running my papers, etc. I started using kneaded erasers for highlights and to lightly erase my work. I haven't really used my gum eraser much so I think I'll give it another try.

I prefer the kneaded eraser. But it really depends on brand and quality - they are not all equally good (in terms of kneadability, stickyness and erasing results). If someone is dissapointed with one brand try out an other one, you may be surprised.
I prefer the Stabilo 1183 over Faber Castell's ones (to sticky and soft for my liking). Some cheaper ones did more smearing than erasing and tend to be more of a workout for my finger muscles than result in kneading it to become clean or specific shaped.
I really do not like the crumblings (and therefore the need of cleaning my page/workplace) of plastic and gum erasers so for me there is no alternative to the Stabilo :-)

I have a heap of dozens of eraser bits and lost track of what they are or were. I have been using a stub of one for the last few days. It is gummy and crumbly but it seems to have abrasive in it like fine pumice. I LOVE using it because it cuts instantly through dense layers of 8B lyra fat graphite without skidding or smearing as the mars white vinyl would AND tooths the paper surface beautifully so you can acheive fine dense blacks drawing over it again. Any ideas what make it is or do you know of anything similar? I use 180 grit sand paper and/or wire wool to modify paper surfaces too

Tombow Zero Plastic, Sakura SumoGrip, Pentel Light or Soft erasers, work the best. Way better results, than any other eraser I have tried. They remove all the graphite and realy fast, without smudging. As for Kneaded erasers, the German made Faber Castell or Stadtler, work the best and last a bit longer than others.

Might have to get a gum eraser or a kneaded one... The Vinyl eraser is horrible for doing finer details because more often than not, it smudges my artwork. It particularly sucks when I'm trying to erase colors and end up smudging them across my art; they're alright for black and white standard sketching. But I'll have to try out some of the other ones as I try to introduce color into my sketches.
Anyone else who uses colors in their sketches. What eraser do you find most effective?

all of my experiences with gum erasers are just unpLEASANT. they were too crumbly and dusty and they'd always just fall apart when I'd erase qhwhsbsb. Vinyl/plastic or the kneaded erasers are the best, but I find that I use my eraser pens more often.

Come to think about it, has anyone ever fully used up an eraser? (Not like on a pencil but like a square one or those pink ones)

I use fiber castell kneadable eraser I bought it in National book store here in the Philippines for ₱28.75 you can exchange $1 for ₱50.50 (I think) so I guess it's less than a dollar :)
