    The molded whistle is what irritated me the most on this model, that and the fact that my tender had a paint blemish on the lining. However, what I was most impressed with is the fact that they gave James completely new wheels, being ever so slightly bigger than Thomas.

      And ya know- I think you nailed it. That and his super small chassis make him feel squished in a way? 😅

    I guess I don’t care a whole lot about the models looking super accurate, I’m just happy that a N-scale Thomas line exists. (I literally never noticed that circle under the smoke box until you pointed it out) I love my n-scale James. He runs super smooth and quiet and can pull a fair amount of weight (as long as you don’t try to climb a grade.) I’ve seen people complain about him having grey wheels because they should be black to be show-accurate, but I actually think James looks better with grey wheels, so…no complaints about that from me.
    Also, here’s my argument for having molded details like the whistle and handrails instead of them being separately applied being an understandable choice: Kids are less likely to break them. Here’s why I say that: I’m a huge NASCAR fan and have been since I was a kid. In the late 2000’s, NASCAR Cup cars had a rear wing instead of a blade spoiler. Me and my NASCAR fan friends all had a couple of 1:64 scale diecasts that had a realistically applied wing. We all broke all of them and hand to glue the wings back on because they were so fragile. We all much preferred the models that had the wing molded to the body of the car. Sure, it looked a little less realistic, but we could actually play with them and not have to worry about breaking them. Hell, they were so fragile, you couldn’t even put them in a Hotwheels carrying case because they didn’t really fit and the rear wings would break off. So when it comes to detailing being molded on instead of separately applied, I get it. They’re trying to make them more durable, and I guess even now as a grown-ass man, I would rather the models look decent and be durable than look super accurate and be prone to snapping off the little detailing.
    Anyway, the point of all this rambling is I love the Bachman N-scale James model and I can’t wait for more stuff in this line. (I saw the other day they’re releasing 3 goods vans soon and I was like “shut up and take my money!”)

    If I’m being honest, the chassis. the front of the running board is a little bit too long, or the front pony doesn’t come out far.

    I have an N Scale James model. I happened to get lucky and don’t have to deal with paint blotches on mine as mine out of the box didn’t have those issues. They could have done better with the face but overall I’m happy with it. Getting a new Thomas model today to go with it.

    One flaw I have read about this James is that he lacks the weight to pull trains the same size as Thomas and Percy.
    Especially when it comes to gradients.
    If Bachmann had been smart they should have designed this with James given some traction tires and have his Tender permanently coupled together with electrical pick ups on the tender wheels to compensate for this.

    The toy like thing, it's the surface finish. It's too shiny, and it has that specific characteristic shine of a shiny plastic toy. You want a shine to the surface finish, a mat finish also makes it look toy like in a different way, but a good surface finish is a bit more satin. There are a couple examples of professional models that make a shiny surface finish work, but it's really hard to do. That's why most good models are more satin. Also, at least to me, there's a couple spots on the tender where the corner is too perfect, and that combined with the shine and the lack of rivets makes it really feel injection molded. which it is, but you want to make it look like it isn't.

    Totally agree with your thoughts on this one - Percy is a slam dunk but James and Thomas are both just a little off. I think part of it is that they're too glossy.
    Toby looks to be another Percy level model though which is good - because in AU these are expensive little models!

    i had a ton of issues with my james right out of the box, even after running in it stutters a lot, and can hardly even pull his tender, let alone any sort of load, not sure why. serviced it multiple times, but with no luck. any ideas?😂

    • @ItsTrainBoy
      @ItsTrainBoy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Huh, that is SUPER strange man?? I’ve never had any issues with my Bachmann N stuff to that degree but have had similar with Lima or Minitrix? 😭
      The first thing I’d think would be a shorting connection somewhere in the wiring but I’m sure you’ve thought the same brother. I’m sorry that isn’t much help I don’t have much I can say without seeing it 😅

  • @RocTerComics
    @RocTerComics ปีที่แล้ว +3

    What size of Kato curves are those? I was looking at maybe getting one of these, but my layout is ridiculously small and I didn't think he'd go round it. (I think I'm using the K20-174 R150 curves and the test layout you have looks similar).

    • @ItsTrainBoy
      @ItsTrainBoy  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The one in the video is one of the smallest Kato makes I believe!! It’s from the Kato Compact line (the 20890 set) with an added switch and few straights. :)
      So far I haven’t had much issue at all with any engines but I usually keep it to smaller ones anyways. I fear Gordon will be the first engine to not like it but will hopefully still ACCOMMODATE it- 😅

    • @RocTerComics
      @RocTerComics ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ItsTrainBoy That's the same curve! Thank you so much, that's so helpful!
      And fun fact, it's not their smallest! They actually have ONE more curve that's smaller. I know because I have an inside corner on my layout and absolutely nothing goes around it except Percy.
      Thanks again though, that's a huge help!
      Edit: Please show us if Gordon CAN'T make it (if you do end up getting/reviewing him)... If he can, he'll be a must buy for me!

    I personally think Bachmann (in the N-Gauge James category) still did a better job than Tomix. Tomix is still pretty good, and I love it just as much as the rest. I don't know why I think so, but I do.
    Will we ever get a review of the Lionel's old vintage G-Scale Thomas and James? They have an old 1990's Thomas *"Charm"* that is hard to get in any other merchandise at the tome.
