    Thank you for continuing to champion the consumer rights of railway modellers, we need you more than ever these days as some manufacturers seem intent on squeezing as much money out of us as they can. And as for criticism from the likes of RM Web, the nasty individuals who inhabit that dark place (and especially those who run it) do not speak for the majority of us modellers. I gave up on them long ago. Well done keep up the good work, and happy modelling for 2023.

    • @graham76man
      @graham76man ปีที่แล้ว

      I couldn't agree with you more Howard. RM is a despicable forum. One member on their insulted me using despicable language and rather than reply I took it up with the moderator, which is what you are supposed to on most forums. However the moderator thought that what the guy had said to me was "acceptable". So I sent the Mod a reply back saying that on any other forum that word would have lead to a ban. I didn't realise at the time that the Mod was the main person in charge of RM. I got another message from the forum, but when I tried to log in I was locked out, so I worked out that I had been banned and couldn't read why🤐 I had posted a great deal of information on the site including pictures. But when they ban you it deletes all the threads and comments you make. An odd thing to do as deleting a member who's contributed a great deal of good stuff would be lost. The only posts of mine that survive is the ones were other uses have quoted me, on threads not started by me.

    • @howardpidd4691
      @howardpidd4691 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@graham76man Unfortunately I found RM Web to be increasingly dominated by a number of intolerant, obsessive, self-appointed 'experts' who were only too ready to launch really nasty vitriolic attacks upon anyone who they disagreed with and really suck the joy out of our hobby. Which is where the role of the moderator comes in, unfortunately in my experience, rather than curb the worst excesses of this 'hard core' he is more concerned with defending the reputation of the big model railway manufacturers. I found that any criticism of them, particularly as regards high prices and value for money, are immediately jumped upon and not tolerated. Which is why I really value Sam's Trains for speaking out on such issues.

    I guess it's too late for this years christmas, but you should try to get your hands on a Lionel H0 scale Polar Express and do a unboxing/review for that. I recently received the train set from the United States and happened to find the 2 additional coaches on a UK webshop and I absolutely love it. The detailing isn't great, but the overal look and sounds bring back so many memories of the 2004 movie. I think it's a must have for people who are into the hobby and love The Polar Express.

    Hi Sam,
    I managed to get one of the Bachmann 8750 panniers back in 2020 for about £90 from Rails of Sheffield (I believe the RRP was around £120). The detail seems to be at the same level as the 64xx you've got, the mechanism is identical but the performance is quite a bit better on mine.

    It is true, they are not as bad as last year, but it is also true that overall the prices of models, good and bad, have dramatically increased. It's almost like the manufacturers want to price people out of this hobby and make it exclusive for people with a lot of spare money.

    • @chris_A8502
      @chris_A8502 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They've gone up far and away beyond inflation or RPI Brendan. It's obscene greed and definitely pricing all but the wealthy out of the hobby. When manufacturers cease to charge what the models are worth, but instead charge what they think they can get away with, they're on a slippery slope. In that respect Hornby are the biggest culprits. If these models were built in the UK and supporting UK businesses I would pay a premium, but not one British hand has gone into manufacturing these models. It's very sad where we've got to now.

    I think your gripes about cab detail are very odd because here in the US we don’t get a lot of that. The diesel cabs tend to be less easily visible inside and so often a simple molded assembly with figures already in is pretty good. Of course, most American steam locomotives have more enclosed cabs than the very open British ones, so it makes sense that American manufacturers tend to skimp out on that kind of detail.

    Want to see a rip off, the bachmann standard 5 costs £194.95 and as far as I can make out its still the same tooling as the 2004 loco. All I can tell is that screw link couplings have been added and painted the cab. And changed the safety valves. I got the body and tender for £12 brand new and then the chassis for just over £40. Much better than the £194 bachmann was charging.

    Sam I thought you were done for a couple weeks for Christmas and New Year. Glad to see you dropped in another video Thanks from across the pond.
    Just a note if you think BACHMAN is bad there you should see them here n America. I would place them in the category of dog chew toys. If you can find anyone that carries them you will find that 99% of them only run with plastic trucks AND plastic wheel sets on any thing but the engines where they need metal pick up. In 50 years of modeling the ONLY thing I have used BACHMAN cars for is very heavy weathering in junk yard lay outs. I use them because I can not justify the use of my blue box (ATHREN) rolling stock to just junk it. Over the years my Blue Box and MARX equipment has served me well in all scales.
    I do also use different scales on the same layout just to get depth and separation. My personal favorite is using HO and N scale. HO in the fore ground with N scale in higher mountain layout where I want to make it look like you are looking at ground level and into the high Sierras of Donner Canyon using the N scale at a height of 1 meter and back against the wall to give the appearance of distance.
    Again thank you for the sarcastic, but funny, review of the worst of '22 and I do have to say the final engine to the crusher was a great choice (if it were me I would have been glad to really crush it even at the price point you paid)

    I think you were unlucky with your Ivatt. Mine arrived the day after your review was released. Whilst I agree that the detailing isn't what you would expect from a loco costing £165, I was able to get mine for less than £130, which softens the blow somewhat. Also, I believe others mentioned it in your review that your copy seemed to be suffering from a misaligned crosshead, which probably contributed to the initial jerky running, whereas mine ran really sweetly straigh out of the box. Keep up the good work, and here's looking forward to seeing what comes out in 2023, and whether the manufacturers take any notice of reviews such as yours.

    What really twines me more than anything is that some manufacturers are charging ridiculous prices for old models. A new dmu with all the cad work, new tooling costs in todays climate I can understand. Bachmann however seem to be taking the piss a bit when they are charging 450 pounds ish for the old southern emu from 10 years ago. Personally the hymek is one of my favourite models although mines the original heljan from when it was released & it wasn't as expensive as these efe ones. It might be getting on a bit but it's still the only option. The 64xx is again 7 nearly 8 years old, a nice model but ageing too.

    Hello Sam - thanks for the reviews. However I will pick only one example as a rebuttal and there are plenty. It is unreasonable that you should pick out sprung buffers as a mark of merit for any model. On the real engines they are sprung because they touch the opposing buffers and help to keep the coupled train tight. These dynamics are not workable on a model. I think it would be a good exercise for you to design and build a model from scratch to put these sorts of reviews in perspective. Let us see how that works. Model trains cost money if you cannot build your own. If you cannot build yourself you accept the good with the bad.
    And thanks for the fun sound and bits. Yes I enjoyed it.
    And a happy Christmas or festival.
    It may be good idea to add a disclaimer that no models were harmed or disfigured in the making of this video. Have a great 2023!!

    to be fair about number 5, the one you reviewed was a reissued model, to give the engine justice, you might want to look into the spectrum version of the same engine, i speak from experience when i say, the spectrum engines are leaps and bounds above to one you reviewed.

    Ahh polystyrene balls, I used to like putting polystyrene balls on my Tomy Plarail layout to simulate snow, much to the dismay of my mum, it did get quite messy lol.

    i feel like i need to say this. the CURRENT Bachmann 4-6-0s aren't that great and there's a reason for that. back when Bachmann's spectrum range was first made the original 4-6-0 had a 5-poll motor and i think a spring in it, after they took a lot of these items out of the spectrum range the 4-6-0 suffered the most with the 5-poll motor being downgraded to a 3 poll one. if you were to get one of these ids look for the old spectrum ones as they have the good motors. also, the stuttering isn't noticeable on DCC. i know this cause the one i have is fitted with DCC and sound and Shes one of my best runners. (it's not a spectrum one) granted i do need to get her a new plug but that shouldn't be a problem.

    After watching the whole video, I'll be honest - I'd be happy to own any of these models - *BUT* only if they were charged at a decent price. None of them worth more than £50 each if we're honest about it, but a crappy fifty quid pannier tank would be a nice addition to the layout of someone on a budget who doesn't care too much about the detailing.

    When you get a good chassis with a poor body like that I always wonder if you could get a better body on it.
    If its the same scale it should look correct and some of the ornament type models are pretty convincing these days.
