Hyoid is the type of gears used in the case. Gear lube has an additive that with centrifugal force the lube clings and climbs the moving parts to maintain lubrication…
This is the correct API GL-5. The other gear lube is API GL-4 which should only be used in manual transmissions with brass synchronizers. The two are NOT interchangeable. I made the mistake of using Mobil! gear lube which said on the label that it was good for both and almost destroyed my manual transmission.
I own a 2011 pilot and have put a deposit down on a 2014 Ridgeline. Great succinct video. Will be very helpful for future maintenance projects for both.
I have a 2009 Ridgeline too with 120k miles. Very reliable vehicle. I change every single fluid myself (oil, power steering, tranny, rear diff, front transfer case, coolant). Fluid changes are super easy on these Ridgelines. Just watch YT videos like this one if you’re unsure how to do it. The only fluid I don’t change on my own is the brake fluid. I have a shop flush the brake lines every 30k.
Yup the blessing and curse of Honda V6 + AWD design, dead simple as from it inception 20 years ago 2017 Ridgeline 180k miles, KISS - change ATF+ATF filter, diff, and transfer case every year of 30kmile ( honestly earlier is better) plus a bottle of LubeGuard Red if you're using Dw1 oil Every 5k miles + filter and engine air filter (get a disposable ones no reusable ones) 5w30 is good if i😢t hot and your running it hard or 0w20 if you want to stick to the book.
@@GBraidi78 I agree with the transmission fluid but I have been using the Valvoline gear oil in my Ridgeline and my MDX and they are both over 250k miles with no transfer case issues.
@@RRofick I use valvoline transmission fluid in my Pilot. It is an approved fluid. Never had any issues. Only Honda fluid I use is for the rear differential.
I find it easier and potentially less likely to spill a full qt would be to just swap it to thr new qt on a work bench prior. Then when you are done consolidate into the used bottle on a bench vs trying to do the swap under the vehicle.
Thanks for watching! No, you will definitely want the front and rear jacked up and supported safely by jackstands. This will allow room to get under it and simulate it sitting level on the ground to avoid overfilling.
See if you can keep flushing fluid through it until it gets close to or comes out of the drain hole. Catch the fluid in something clean so you can keep using it. If it doesn’t come out, maybe it will get close enough to grab it with a hooked pick or something similar.
Does a 2005 manual transmission Honda CRV have a transfer case that requires this fluid change? My owner's manual says nothing about transfer case fluid, only rear differential fluid, but a mechanic I recently brought my car to says it needs transfer case fluid too.
No. Your mechanic is incorrect. For '03 to '05 Pilots, transfer takes place in the transmission. There is no separate transfer case. Trans fluid is all you need.
That is correct. When I took my MDX for its first transmission service many years ago, they tried to tell me it did not have a transfer case even though the manual and the Acura service code specifically said to change the transfer case fluid. I ended up doing it myself.
On 2015 Pilot, the typical three inch 3/8ths extension (actually 2 7/8" long) is just slightly too long. Had to use a 1/2" drive socket driver with a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter - worked great.
Always been terrified to change my own oil and other projects like this from all the stories I hear from people over tightening and stripping out the plugs.

Get a quart of the valvoline gear oil in a pouch and you can squeeze it in. No pump needed.
Yup that’s exactly what I do. Those squeeze pouches make it super easy.

How many miles were on this Honda at the time that you changed this gear oil? Thanks for the great video.

At my age the less I have to crawl out from under the vehicle the better. 😂
Great video, thanks for sharing your experience with us! Is your vehicle up on jack stands?
Yep, always use jackstands when working under a vehicle!
Thanks for the great video! Did you manage to perform this work without jacking up the front wheels?
Thanks for watching! No, you will definitely want the front and rear jacked up and supported safely by jackstands. This will allow room to get under it and simulate it sitting level on the ground to avoid overfilling.
I just changed mine in my 2005 CRV. I don't think its ever been changed. I had to use a pry bar to get the drain and fill plug loose.
Unfortunately, most vehicles are under maintained and would last much longer if some simple maintenance was performed. Good job!
I have an 06 crv, and there are no fill and drain plugs on the front transfer case. Are you talking about your rear differential fluid?
@@BridgeDweller yea
My 2004 Pilot does not have a transfer case. On '03 to '05 Pilots, transfer is done in the transmission itself
Didn't you do the exact opposite of what you said about the drain and fill plug at about 1:43? lol
Probably. I confuse myself from time to time 😁
Accidentally dropped plastic piece into the transfer case from my pump. Can’t get it out? Let it grind, then drain it? Any suggestions?

Both Awd or 4wd require this service?
AWD/4WD is the same.
Yes definitely

Its actually a PTO (Power Take Off) Unit... A Transfer case has a Chain inside
Thanks for watching!
Is this the same oil as for the rear differential?
No, this is gear oil, not VTM4 oil. Much thicker.
Thx what confused me was the title which has vtm-4 in it
@@baldwin2112 I'm surprised he hasn't corrected that yet
What size socket do the drain and fill plugs use? And how much fluid would you say you used? Thanks!!!
It holds about half a quart and the plugs do not use sockets, 3/8” ratchet only with a short extension.
Even a lot of service writers at the dealership do NOT know this, you have to check before and after.
Absolutely!
That is correct. When I took my MDX for its first transmission service many years ago, they tried to tell me it did not have a transfer case even though the manual and the Acura service code specifically said to change the transfer case fluid. I ended up doing it myself.

You can't get wrong...just do it following the what the others do.

What year is your Ridgeline because my first gen.('05) Pilot isn't like this and neither is my '98 CRV?
2009

Hmm, probably so but I’d get it checked before you drive it any further.
What size are the crush washers please?
