  • Hello Everybody.
    Here is my first attempt at fixing the C64 Mini Joystick.
    I had a spare Joystick to try it out on, and it was successful. Here is how its done as these Joysticks are always breaking.
    I used 3.5 x L50 mm Screws and a size 3 Drill.
    Please like, comment and Subscribe.
    Watch till the end, as I have footage of me testing it.

    Simple, effective fix.
    I think Im getting old though.... felt the urge to tell you how dangerous the way you was drilling is.
    Plastic that splinters easy while gripping the handle/knob pushing with force towards the drill....
    I can tell you from 1st hand experience that when the plastic splinters and your control slips and you drill the webbing between yourthumb and index finger,.... that doesnt tickle.
    Thankfully you didnt get to find out :-)

    Thanks buddy! A little tip like that can save a lot of time and money. A new screw probably costs 10 maybe 20 cents at most. MUCH cheaper than a new C64 mini joystick that's for sure.

    Great video, thank you!
    My joystick just snapped while I was playing Summer Games II with my daughter. The javelin event, to be precise. I think I'll order a new one (2 even for more fun) but I'm too cheap to throw this one away so I thought I'd try inserting a longer screw plus glue the broken plastic. I did a search to see if anyone could hint which size of screw to use and found your video. :)

    Cheers a stack for this idea. I used an old Xbox 360 long steel torx screw that holds the case shut, perfect length and size, I did have to drill the hole deeper but the controller feels super solid now.
    I was going to attempt the micro switch change but I didn’t have the parts. This was a gift for someone so I hope they enjoy it! Cheers for the advice!

    I did this mod the other day using this video, watching it did help. The screw I used was a little too fat but it still managed to stay in and keep the joystick together and operate as normal. 2 inch screw for us 🇺🇸 yanks. Thanks again man!

    • @MorganJustGames
      @MorganJustGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries Brian. Glad you managed to get it sorted. It won't last forever, but will certainly last alot longer than if it was unmodded. Yeah its nuisance to have to do it, but its so much better after its achieved.

  • @RETRONuts
    @RETRONuts 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If you put a 2 inch screw in the shaft and just screw it in there say because there is inside the shaft a Y shape inside near the ball,the screw will go left or right and it will never be straight so you need to drill it,you don't if you put in a 1 inch screw.
    I am glad someone used my idea.. :) I was banging on about this on Facebook for months,saying to people they should do it and you will never have a problem with the joystick again.. :) I have done this to one of my joysticks but not the new one I have,will have to soon.

      Thank you for your comment. I was seeing posts on Facebook almost everyday about snapping Joysticks. I did think of the idea after my C64 Mini Joystick snapped but one of my friends had another idea which I went with. A few more months past and I decided to do it. I've heard a few people who had done it but I couldn't find any videos at the time so I went for it. Mine has been brilliant ever since. I use my original C64 alot but when I do C64 Streams, I used the Mini.

    This is a prime candidate for 3D printed parts. I don't have one of these, but my only concern about what you have done is that when the shaft was empty it was flexible (by the sounds of it too much) However now the stick is much stiffer so will transfer extra strain to the base, so that may need beefing up also.

    • @MorganJustGames
      @MorganJustGames  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since I did this Video, I've done a C64 Stream and one longplay. No problems yet and I hope it remains that way. What you said makes sense though but unfortunately I also don't have a 3D Printer.

      LumberJack's "splitting maul" axe has wedge shape same as the big screw in the video. Plastic is famous for splitting over time under pressure. Added flat washer spreads pressure out like wearing a snowshoe...although the recess "cup" the screw head sits in could mean trying all the washers in local hardware store bins...like Cinderella' slipper hunt. Perhaps a "dome head/pan head" screw instead?

    Nice. I just had to manually fix TheC64 Joystick that comes with the Maxi version, and used the little screw it had, but oddly it just came unscrewed and didn't break. Seeing this I'm going to give your idea a try if that damned screw comes loose again. My entire bottom mechanism can be pulled straight upward on the version I have, it's a little wonky but the microswitch thingies make it less worrisome.

    Is this also a problem with the microswitch joystick that comes with the full sized “TheC64”? I’ve also purchased a second microswitch joystick. Has this problem been fixed with that version? Or is this fix something I should look into doing? I don’t want to go drilling things if I don’t have to.

    • @MorganJustGames
      @MorganJustGames  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The new Microswitches Joysticks are better and i haven't needed to drill them. The only problem is the screw on the end of the shaft keeps unscrewing itself then falls out. Its a simple fix but can be annoying if it keeps happening.

      @@MorganJustGames So far, I havn't had an issue with my one joystick that came with the big C64 yet. I can say that out of all these "emulation game systems", this one is the best I've ever seen. I have a real C64, but I'm just terrified to plug the thing in and turn it on without a new, modern, power supply, and replacing the capacitors on the board. All this company needs to do now is get this thing internet (300 baud emulation!), and multi-drive capability so we can run C64 BBS's again. Haha!

    It looks poor quality. The original Competition Pro used arcade-like microswitches not membrane contacts. It's good that I saw that, because I wanted to buy this joystick and the price is the same as my trusty Logitech F710 (modern wireless gamepad) that is much better quality and more advanced. I wonder if the Competition Pro clone from Speedlink is the same junk. If so I'm going to build my own joystick using arcade parts.
