That firehose is damn good stuff!! I just scored a 1930s very nice Wagner Russian strop on the bay. The linen says Scottish linen it's made identically to the firehose linen. Its interesting though somehow they sealed the ends, but not by sewing. It would be interesting to know how they did it!
I have a boxed Thuri that was sold by the Larkin Co out of Buffalo, NY. The instructions inside the lid advise against using fabric strops; "but always on a Larkin Leather Strop which is made from the best leather obtainable for that purpose" I wonder if that's a Thuri thing or if they just didn't sell a linen strop. They could of. From what I've read Larkin sold everything from soap to furniture and it was mostly high end stuff in its day.
***** I've read a lot of 'older info' - including that bit from a Larkin box. All I can say is that I've been using a fabric strop since day 1 and with all honing systems - all with success.
+Terrence Norfolk Just noticed my original response never loaded or saved... weird. I think you're talking about swivel snap hooks? The widest I've found is 2". I didn't even know Osborne sold hardware. If you need small quantities of stuff like that, sometimes you can find it on Amazon. The prices might not be great though, but it beats buying hundreds of something you only need a few of.
Great vid and info keep up the great work I also love your stones. Lol right now I have a cow belly strop I made I live close to a leather store and all I got is a hard Arkie and a pike washita stone for my finisher I use slate well I'm shaving lol cheers
Depends on how one looks at things, best thing to do is to try different types to see what you find out. People like what they like, and sometimes its hard or impossible to say they like it.
Do you sell the hose Keith? I recently made a compressed horse butt strop (spent 2hrs rolling it lol...it definitely changed the personality...it was fast when natural, it's VERY fast now!), and since I had such a hard time finding appropriate linen I just made a hard felt second strop. The fire hose would be very cool though, as well as more efficient than the felt.
Hey Keith. I bought one of the firehose strops and the linen doesn't like to sit flat. Do you suggest ironing the linen so its flat or work it round till its gets soft enough? Cheers mate. Keep the information rollin'.
I don't recommend ironing because it's easy to ruin the linen. Normally I just pull snugly and it gets flat enough. It's also possible to work the fabric with your hands/fingers to get it to relax. Sometimes you can spritz it with water first, then massage it. The weave is 'circular and the hoses were stored folded so there's always bends and twists to deal with.
Hey keith, great video beautiful strops, im saving up to order one of your horse/ fire hose strops. Quick question, know anyone who sells good English bridle strops?
Very informative , confirmed my love of good strops , I only use horse 🐎 hide . I wonder if the other leathers make much difference ? ( Treated myself to a Kanayama , glad I did as Mr Niomi has passed away 🥺)
I love your honest and no nonsense approach to things. Very refreshing. Great video!
Happy Honing!

Anyone who doesnt have one of keiths fire hose strops should get one. They are great for after honing.
Love it Keith! Always great information :)

Great vids Keith. CAn you tell me where I can find the wide strap clips please. I don't want to buy 500 fromOsborne, just a few will do.

Thanks for the review. Do you get better/different results with different types of leather or is it just a matter of esthetic and "feel" preference?

Interested in making my own strop. Anywhere you’d recommend I buy horse hide from?
Maybe try Tandy.
Thank you!
Hello,
What is the difference between walkin horse and horse hide strops?
Walkin horse is a brand. Horsehide is a type of leather.
Don't understand whay you mean???
I'm sorry - I don't know any other way to say it.
I love my firehouse strop…..//
Does horse hide have a light draw?
Depends on how the hide is set up. All leather, any type of leather, can be made to be one way or another.
Great video. Love the firehose video!
Happy Honing!
