Still have the tin and most of the flakes sitting around here, because unfortunately it gave me tongue bite every time that I tried it. Something with the chemistry in this blend doesn't sit well with me. Flavor is nice though. But I won't throw away the tin, because it will always remind me of John.

I buy the MacBaren Old Dark Fired and Bold Kentucky in the 1lb size - I guess I like that tang :) I like C&D Burley Flake #3 - a bit more tang probably. Recently tried Solani Aged Burley and really enjoyed it. Thanks for the review and congrats!

I purchased a tin of this Burley flake, Never Smoked a Burley flake before. And I like it. Also found this flake is a little better with a cup of coffee in the morning. It's a good solid 45 minute smoke for me in the cob pipe Country Gentleman. Great review I come up with the same flavor as you did. I so wanted to be an aromatic smoker but the darn aromatics seem to bite me but they sure do smell good. Enjoy your weekend and please keep the rain up there with you folks as for me I think I'm going to fire up the grill and have a cold beer.
Dear Matches, I enjoy the taste of Burley but am a nicotine lightweight. The hit I get from these blends leave me on the floor everytime lol. Is there something I can do to build myself up to be able to smoke Burley blends more regularly? Would you recommend some blends that I could use as stepping stones to improve my nicotine tolerance and eventually be able to enjoy my Burleys like you seem to enjoy yours? Regards, - Mike.
Sugar will negate the effects of nicotine, so make sure to eat something, and you may want to have a sugary drink handy as well. My experience has been that flakes (generally) seem to be a little less potent in the nic department.
I don't think this tobacco is heavy on nicotine but if it is for you you might try Sutliff's match for Edgeworth Ready-Rubbed, way better than the Lane product. It's very mild in the nic department with a similar woody tone to the flavor. Wessex Burley Slice similar also. MB Gloden Extra is a bit different but very light in nicotine. I usually can't handle likewise heavy dark-fired blends.

I have just taken up the pipe thing and I am a novice but I am financially investing in it more than I ever anticipated which I guess could be quite normal. Many pipes and tobaccos await me at home as I live in Australia and work away from home so I'm getting everything mailed from the states. My concern is i have smoked cigarettes all my life and would love to put them down but continue my interest in pipes and pipe tobaccos. In your opinion is this possible?? I heard you say you used to smoke and I would love it if you VR your response about that issue if it is something you could talk about. I feel you always get a better answer in words. Welcome to 860, and thanks for the kind words. Somewhere amongst my videos is the story of how I transitioned from cigs to the pipe. It is a shame that it took a health scare to do it. Anything is possible, so keep an open mind about quitting. You will never regret it I can guarantee.
You can do it! Just remember that after something like 24 hours of quitting, your body doesn't need nicotine, so anything you might be feeling is more of a mental craving than physical.
I must admit I'm not very good at picking out flavours (maybe because I have no adenoids?) but I really like the flavour I get from Dark Fired Kentucky. Toscanos are my favourite cigars and Ogden's Walnut Flake is my favourite UK OTC blend, a bit like St. Bruno which tastes very similar. I'd love to try some burley-forward blends as I've noticed its presence really seems to help my favourite blends. I did enjoy Amphora Original but something like this flake may be right up my street

I am a huge fan of savinelli,great performance and honest price. Look at the hand made pipe like castello,ser jacopo,ceppo or caminetto,expansive stuff but great,great smoking tools.
Matches, smoked my first bowl of HH Burley Flake this morning and I was immediately pleased. In all honestly, it’s my first burley flake, period. When I popped the tin (and what a great presentation) I took in this great cocoa note. Upon lighting it up, I fell in love with the combination of smoky and sweet flavors and aromas. It smoked dry with only one relight toward the bottom of the bowl. It’s a smooth smoke with hardly any nic hit that I could detect. I could see this being an everyday smoke. I’m going to order a few more tins and see what it’s like aged for awhile. HH Burley Flake from Mac Baren is smooth, polished and truly regal. It gets the Thousand endorsement. Clarks Favorite is a hybrid (similar to Gingers Favorite). I'm not sure if there are exact dimensions for a warden, but this falls a couple inches short of the usual 9 or so inches.

The Mac Baren HH series is some of prettiest and well presented tobacco's I have ever seen. I'm a big fan of most them. There's a couple I haven't tried yet but I will. Congrats on you success with your channel. It's well deserved.

I have been a Burley fan for a while now, & my main smoke is the Wessex Burley Slice, & in comparison to the Mac Baren, I found the Wessex somewhat stronger in the Nic department , but not dramatically, so the Mac Baren is a excellent alternative esp since Wessex is becoming harder to acquire. I was wondering if you have tried Mac Baren’s “Norwood”? I have really been enjoying Norwood & would love to hear your thoughts on it if you stumble across a tin or two. Thanks again, cheers!!

But it is a great tobacco Got an unopened tin of HH Burley Flake Would you say the HH Burley is closer to dark old fired or the solani aged ? Or its a beast of its own nature ? P.S. if its closer to solani ...i might send the tin to you :D

In my mind, you have three different blends all together and I agree that Solani is far opposite of Old Dark Fired. I would put the Burley Flake right smack in the middle. While the flake reminds me of Solani, there is enough Dark Kentucky to swing me back towards ODF, but not all the way back. Think of the HH Burley Flake struggling to go one way or the other. In the final analysis, my guess is that it would align better with Solani, but others may disagree.

Jeepers, I have enough trouble finding tobacco in stores in CT, I'm not aware of any producers, although Leaf Only in Middletown sells raw tobacco leaves for doing whatever with.

Flakes are a challenge to get and keep lit. I used to either do a rubbing out or the fold and stuff method with mixed results. Most recently, I have adopted the jelly roll method (I named it myself LOL). Roll the flake to the diameter of the inside of the bowl and jam the roll into the bowl. It's been working for me.

Good video, loved your take on the blend. I have come to find that over the course of two tins is that I absolutely love it. Lol, it's the first thing I reach for in the morning with my coffee. I have some other blends in the cellar that I will try later, but for now this is my go to first. I hope it isn't too much trouble to do a review on this one, but you mentioned a pipe tobacco you smoked in your younger years, a Vanilla Cavendish. Not sure which one it is, but, I would love to try it out. If not a review, then maybe a recommendation? I don't want to see you wince through another video, like the one where you smoked that Briarworks old-fashioned bacon. I'd also be in pain just seeing it.
Oh yes, as far as I know, the Vanilla Cavendish is still available (Walgreens perhaps). I still have half a bag and smoke it about once a year for old time's sake. It's heavily treated with glycol, but it's nowhere near as bad as the Bacon Old Fashioned.

Carter Hall is a better option, but the Vanilla Cavendish can have several different names. As I recall, one was DreamCastle and another was Master Blenders.

@@Matches860 im curious, HH Dark Old Fired is one of the tobacco's that pleases me senses greatly, i tried a tin of Solani's aged burley flake and that is on the opposite side of the frequency for my pleasure inputs, lol. But it is a great tobacco

@@igortheterrible8983 What a fantastic question Igor. I'm having reservations about answering it LOL. In my mind, you have three different blends all together and I agree that Solani is far opposite of Old Dark Fired. I would put the Burley Flake right smack in the middle. While the flake reminds me of Solani, there is enough Dark Kentucky to swing me back towards ODF, but not all the way back. Think of the HH Burley Flake struggling to go one way or the other. In the final analysis, my guess is that it would align better with Solani, but others may disagree.

It sounds like one can have a Solani Burley after breakfast with a double shot or a bitter espresso, HH Burley after lunch and HH DOF after dinner ...having all tastes transiting into one another.. and witness a symphony of a complete 24 Earth's rotation around its axes while realizing time is not an illusion

Jeepers, I have enough trouble finding tobacco in stores in CT, I'm not aware of any producers, although Leaf Only in Middletown sells raw tobacco leaves for doing whatever with.

Like my loose tobacco as well , seem to not get the bowl really going with the flakes. Obvious newbie smoker. Grats with the 10K!! Awesome channel
Flakes are a challenge to get and keep lit. I used to either do a rubbing out or the fold and stuff method with mixed results. Most recently, I have adopted the jelly roll method (I named it myself LOL). Roll the flake to the diameter of the inside of the bowl and jam the roll into the bowl. It's been working for me.

Hmmmm, by coincidence, we had to have our modem replaced due to issues with phone calls not being heard. There is a possibility the modem was my problem all along, but I can't guarantee it. I'll probably try a live stream again when no one expects it LOL.
Good video, loved your take on the blend. I have come to find that over the course of two tins is that I absolutely love it. Lol, it's the first thing I reach for in the morning with my coffee. I have some other blends in the cellar that I will try later, but for now this is my go to first. Now that am almost out I had to make sure that I had enough till spring, so I just ordered a pound, lol. Again, thanks for your time an advice. 👊👊👌

I hope it isn't too much trouble to do a review on this one, but you mentioned a pipe tobacco you smoked in your younger years, a Vanilla Cavendish. Not sure which one it is, but, I would love to try it out. If not a review, then maybe a recommendation? I don't want to see you wince through another video, like the one where you smoked that Briarworks old-fashioned bacon. I'd also be in pain just seeing it.
Oh yes, as far as I know, the Vanilla Cavendish is still available (Walgreens perhaps). I still have half a bag and smoke it about once a year for old time's sake. It's heavily treated with glycol, but it's nowhere near as bad as the Bacon Old Fashioned.

Carter Hall is a better option, but the Vanilla Cavendish can have several different names. As I recall, one was DreamCastle and another was Master Blenders.
