What better man to discuss the finer details of burley flake - very interesting discussion and history lesson. Great HH photo. After 35 years of enjoying this endlessly fascinating hobby, burley blends (particularly the flakes) certainly reign in my pipebowls. Solani Aged burley and C&D #3 are supreme smokes. Many thanks for the comparison notes - HH burley sounds like a must try. Hope all is well with you and yours. Happy smokes and kind respects from Cartersville, GA,. Eric.

A question about your Meerschaum pipes; do your pipes have a teflon or delrin mortise and tenon joint? If no have you noticed a difference in the quality of the smoke with and without the teflon/ delrin fittings?

    Hello Mark my friend!
Great comparison video with these two great, and quality tobaccos...two of my favorites I should say....I have always appreciated the HH Mac Baren tobaccos.
As you've said, it is surprising to me that it has taken them so long to come up with a Burley flake tobacco, since it is right down their alley.
I don't really like the new packing of the Solani either, although all my tins have been the old style, haven't purchased it since the change.
Anyways, thank you for your comparison review on these...always top notch!
Gonna hit you soon on voxer, yeah...believe me, we will talk soon!

All our online shops are out. I wonder if Ronnie would ship some to me. The only Solani tobacco I have tried is a can of silver and black a friend gifted me at my pipe club. Hey Bremen, another fantastic video. Amazing detail you manage to work in here across every aspect of these fine tobaccos. Really enjoy the historian commentary mixed in with the actual bacco breakdowns. You have a fantastic style that is very natural and mixed with a ton of humor and interesting detail. No worries at all on length of video, it is much better this way imho vs. if you try to rush it and then end up missing or leaving things out. Very nice on the bacco growth as well, that is something that I would love to "sneak" into my wife's garden next year, glad to hear you managed a decent smoke out of your own stock. Hope you are staying cool and enjoying your summer. Happy smokes and take care! PS. Have you ever compared Wessex BS vs. Solani ABF? I just did a comparison and while I do get a different taste profile it is amazing how similar the baccos are. You had me curious when you were talking about re-branding.

Hi Mark: Happy Summer, my friend! Wow...the kleingarten cottage looks fantastic. You have done a great job with it. Such a nice, relaxing atmosphere. One thing that I discovered about growing tobacco in your garden. You will have difficulty growing other crops, in the same place, next season. The tobacco does something strange to the soil. Hope that's not the case with your variety. The burley comparison was very interesting. Thanks for that. I ordered some LJ Peretti #333, this Summer. It's a rough cube-cut burley, with a light topping, which I think might be deertongue. It's also pretty good stuff. A nice Summer tobacco. Always great to see you here on YT. All the best...and, Be Well. Ed

Lovely review Mark and not to long for me, I enjoy both the tobacco reviews and the historical elements of your videos and as a former university student the "bigger picture" thought process that goes into them. When I first saw that the review was Mc Barren HH burley flake I was very surprised that this had been released as they already do a burley flake in the HH range called HH Old dark fired. I looked at the reviews and the scores are both rated at 3.6 and the taste, favouring, strength and room note are almost identical.
I shall have to purchase a tin of each and carry out a comparison and pass my findings on to you for further research. Keep up the good work and stay well.
P.s. apologies I'm nearly as forgetful as you are sometimes lol I meant to mention that I'm not sure if Old Dark Fired is available in both the states and Europe and as they seem almost identical whether one is aimed at the European market and one at the US market. Unfortunately I don't know any American pipe smoke who I could ask that question.
    Regards
    Andrew Bolderson

Mark. So great to see you again. An absolute favourite of mine to pair with coffee is HH Old Dark Fired. The other issue with the round tin is that it allows the flakes to move around more and they hit the sides and then start to break. My own sense was this move of all these companies to the round tins was due to the requirement of warning labels? It seems that a number of the companies are doing this.

A few days ago I found my tin of HH Burley Flake that I bought right when the tobacco came out here in Germany. But I didn't like it very much when I first tried it. It gave me tongue bite and everything, so I did put the opened can in a ziplock baggy in the cupboard and forgot about it, until now.
I have smoked it now, and I gotta say, it improved quite a lot with aging, at least for my taste.
And I don't know if I like it more than the Solani ABF, since I haven't had that in a while, but if I recall correctly, the taste of the aged HH BF has now come quite close to the Solani ABF.
I also have an old square tin of the Solani sitting vacuum packaged in my cellar, but I don't want to open it yet. I keep it for a very special occasion.

Great video , as always . Though my comments are late , as we do sometimes missed one or two. My comments are towards the end of your video , I see the little picture of a skull from the bookcase . Is that the skull painting by Van Gogh ? . As I remember seeing it at the Van Gogh ‘s museum in Amsterdam. All the best wishes from here .

    Hello Mark,
that was once again an excellent and interesting video of you.
Too bad that the HH does not exist in Germany. But not here in Spain too. I am very curious to try it, because the Solanie is an excellent tobacco too, which I like to smoke with great pleasure. The marketing policy of MacBaren is incomprehensible to us laymen in this sector. So there is nothing more common for us than to be patient. Thanks God, patient is one of my favorit characteristics. :) One of the reasosn to smoke a good pipe with a rich tobacco.
Now you have also gone under the tobacco farmers, which surprise:) Homegrown tobacco in your own garden. This is really good. Congratiolations!
    Greetings from the south.

A word for your English vocabulary, 'personal' or 'idiosyncratic.' The way someone packs a pipe is personal, i.e. 'in a particular or idiosyncratic way.'
Best channel on pipe smoking I've found thus far. You've gained 300 subscribers since I started watching a few weeks ago. Nice work. Perhaps, I'll see you again.

I just love your channel...I'm new to smoking a pipe, and I'm learning so much from you. Aside from tobacco, what kind of watch do you wear? I'm also a watch collector. Now a pipe collector. I took your advice and purchased a pipe from the maker Birinci from the German EBay site. Can't wait to get it in my hands and between my teeth. Thanks so much.

Hi Mark: Interesting about the delayed premier of HH blends in Germany. A couple of things come to mind. It may be that Macbaren uses the U.S. market for a test market for their new offerings before introducing them to Europe. Also, might there be a screening process for new tobaccos in Germany by government agencies before allowing them to be released? Just speculating. I love the cottage complete with potted burley plants, perfect! Keep puffin.

      Hello Doug! Hello Paul!
Thanks for that! And...yeah...there might be something to it. Another possibility is, that they have certain contracts with their US distributors, or don't wanna be short on production, when they come up on too many markets same time... I think, we would have some better understanding and sympathy, if they would simply explain their reasons...
But we could live with delivery in fall...I guess...lol

Greetings from the US. Fantastic video! I think the availability of HH blends in the states has something to do with regulations and the strict laws in the EU. The US is very loose with tobacco and what you can put in it, but that may be changing. However there are some Mac Baren blends that will never make it to the US market because they don't adhere to some regulations that we DO have (coming from a Mac Baren response to an email I sent them). So, who knows? Loved the video. Any experience with Pfeifen Huber tobaccos in Munich?

As always an excellent review. Beautiful cottage... by the way the wall clock it’s a piece of art! Good to hear that they use burley from brazil though have to say that Brazilian tobacco its a mystery to me despite being my original home country...and from what I heard brazilian tobacco may soon disappear given the taxes and health control that causes political persecution over it... Your channel is fantastic and is always a pleasure hearing you. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah...Bremen and Brazil (I think mainly the region of Bahia) share a long history, since all tobacco from Brazil for Germany came over the harbors of Bremen and most of it was used by Bremen Cigar makers up to the end of WWI...after WWII, Brazil was the first country, delivering tobacco to the harbors Bremen again...
      And...yeah... you're right...it's a pocket watch...

You seem to keep an open mind and enjoy trying many different tobacco blends but I was wondering if there was a blend type ( English, straight Virginia's, VaPer, and etc.) that you favor more so than others and also was there a blend,or blends, when you first started smoking that made you or helped you realize that this is something that you were really going to enjoy? Just curious. I love pipe smoking and all the different tobacco's and your impression/review videos about tobacco is what got me started watching your channel but what really got me hooked and made me enjoy your channel over others is the added history/historical aspect that you bring into some of your videos.Being a history lover and pipe smoker your channel is just great!Your caring, honest, and personable demeanor is very inviting as well.Sorry for the rant but when I enjoy something as much as I enjoy your videos I have to say something about it and let you know there are many many people just like me who really enjoy what you do.Stay well and keep the videos coming!! Sincerely, Braxton

      Hey Braxton!
Thank you so much for your most kind and heartwarming words! Truly so much appreciated!
And...yeah...well...as many pipe smokers, I started with Aromatics...first slightly ...then heavier ..and heavier...lol. After a while, I searched for something else. started with Virginias, then Bureley...Kentucky ...finally Latakia... Today, I like nearly all sorts of Tobaccos...if the quality is excellent, although, the very rich, sweet and strong Kentucky tobaccos are my favorites. My favorite cuts are Flakes, Cakes, Ready rubbed, Curley...something out of the ordinary... :-)
Take care, my friend! Hope, you are well!

Hello Mark, I know this comment is a few years old but I just wanted to Remarque on your grandfather clock. Last year, I purchased an old grandfather clock that is in the same shape and I was told that it was in 1920s or 30s German grandfather clock. It has that round top and the convexed dial glass just like yours does. I have the works out of it and I plan to convert it to a cigar humidor. Can you tell me anything about your clock? Manufacturer, age?

Yeah...well...my grandfather purchased this clock in the 30s ...and that's pretty much all I know about it. This very model is quite common here in Germany. Very simple but nearly indestructible (transported in on a wheelbarrow to the cottage) and precise if adjusted correctly. Never saw maintenance, never saw a drop of oil...lol.

Yep, the zippo thing is controversial in the States too. I can taste the zippo fluid in the tobacco so I don’t use it. Ironically I preferred a zippo when I use to smoke burley based cigarettes. I don’t have the taste awareness you seem to, but chemicals (including a lot of aromatics)will dominate the tobacco's taste for me if it is mixed in there. I wish I could use a zippo, the lighter actually works. So enjoy it!! Great reviews!

Hi Mark. Got my tin of HH Burley a few months ago but I have not opened it yet. I am now looking forward to it. I don't know if you noticed but the HH Burley is the only HH that is not listed on Mac Baren website, perhaps just an oversight. Anyhow, hopefully given a few years to age, the HH Burley will become sweeter and closer to the Solani Aged Burley. Enjoy the summer my friend!

So I just tried the MacBaren HH Burley Flake for the first time last week. It is also the first flake tobacco that I have ever tried as well as the first MacBaren Blend I have ever tried.
Coming from cigarette smoking, I figured this would be about the halfway point between English and aromatic blends. To my surprise it was. Not only is it a great mid point tobacco but, it was more than satisfying.
I haven’t tried the Solani Aged Burley Flake as of yet but, seeing how it is blended by MacBaren, I expect another amazing tobacco. I will be trying it very soon.
I really enjoyed your review of these tobaccos and I am looking forward to watching more reviews in the future. Be well my friend and keep ‘em lit!🔥

I guess they say that Burley has oils in it as opposed to sugar and it really comes out during pressing.
I think the Solani is maybe more sticky due to having more Burley oils in it.
But maybe it’s the sugar or both.
Anyway- I started using a Zippo religiously for pipe smoking after seeing you do it so I knew it was gonna be ok.
You basically said in another vid that sure I sometimes taste a tiny bit of fuel for a very brief moment but then it’s completely gone and I get on with my life. 😂
For me it’s the only lighter that will reliably work in the upcoming New England winter and it does not ruin your week when you lose it in the snow somewhere.

Having been involved in the production setting, I’d say that their production line wasn’t set up and ready to package these in round tins with the proper insides and they ran out of the square tins before they had their line converted. Just my guess.
I really enjoy Solani ABF, never tried the Mac Baren BF, if you have access to ABF or Wessex BF I wouldn’t think there would be much need for Mac Baren’s. It’s my understanding that in order for Mac Baren to market in Germany the Govt was making it far too restrictive and too much red tape that they decided to not sell there. I’m sure you’ve already learned this given the age of your video.
    All the best,
