    Run and gun shooter that tried to be Sega's answer to Contra. It's a pretty average example of the genre, without much to make it stand out, other than the name (which would probably be considered in bad taste today.

    I like how there's different death cries for the enemies, instead of one, which makes it so repetitive and boring! Great attention to detail in the sound department by SunSoft!

    I mean everyone is going on about 'clone' this and 'clone' that but 75% of that weapon swapping system ended up in Contra Shattered Soldier so really, it's a wash.

    In Japan, you cannot copyright the mechanics of a game (shoot 'em up, Zelda clone, etc.), only the graphics and sound. This is why so many clones exist.

    • @greenie2600
      @greenie2600 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This isn't limited to Japan. Consider Words With Friends, or all the Minecraft clones out there. In general: if you blatantly reuse characters, settings, assets, source code, etc. from a prior work, then you've definitely violated copyright. But game mechanics (which would be covered by patent, not copyright), and general themes (such as "Nordic fantasy role-playing game"), are much harder to build a legal case against.

    • @dorpth

      You can't copyright stuff that broad...anywhere.
      Clones are rare outside of Japan?....wut??

      "Scenes a faire" (e.g. common tropes that can be related to a style of work) cannot be copyrighted. That was why Capcom lost a lawsuit against Data East, allowing DE's "Fighter's History" (a fighting game very similar to Street Fighter II) to be sold and distributed.

    This game looks like it was released in '86 (outdated graphics, small sprites, annoying sounds). In '89 we were playing Golden Axe, Final Fight, and TMNT. If I saw it in an arcade today, though, I'd definitely play it!

    • @dorpth
      @dorpth 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hell, I'd put it more at 1985. The graphics look like a side scrolling Gauntlet.
      Aliens and Rolling Thunder were '86 and looked better than this.
      But jesus, for 1989? 2 full years after Contra that it was blatantly ripping off?

    Sun always felt like one of those companies like Technos where they were clearly more comfortable designing games for consumer systems. Their arcade fare isn't quite up to the same standard. (Nobody *wants* to play Kangaroo)
    The presentation here is interesting. Apparently takes a fair deal of inspiration from The Terminator's future war scenes; Makes me wonder if this had any development overlap with Journey to Silius. (Which would still be intended as a The Terminator tie-in at the time this one still hit arcades)

    Be fair in hindsight and see the background, this game is clearly a clone of contra but I ask you which one do you compare it to? With the super against 3 or the first Arcade of Contra? This game for the year of release it is obvious that the Snes one did not come out so it would be fair with the Arcade one and I must say that it is superior to the original Arcade. Now we must give credit that the weapon system has interesting and original variants that were later seen in copied against Hardcorps and against 3, for example the flame thrower here is the most effective and original weapon in this clone, a weapon that I would later see Against 3; Another detail is the multiple shot is not so tricky and it is balancing forcing you to use the most weapons at certain levels. And they should not be confused, the game is not easy, it requires a lot of memorization and it is not as easy as seen in video, I played it and if it is more difficult than against 3 but not as impossible as against 1 from Nes but more difficult than against 1 from Arcade.

    There are some cool things going on with the graphics because this is SunSoft we're talking about, but did the protagonist really have to run along at such a crawl? I also like that the enemies are generic-looking warehouse workers and dudes in what has to be the flimsiest vehicles I've ever seen, taking one shot to up and explode 🤣
