Released in 1989, Willow is a side-scrolling platform game based on the fantasy movie starring Warwick Davis and Val Kilmer. It possesses Capcom's usual attention to detail and production values, and is a solid yet difficult platforming experience.
The game broadly follows the movie plot, with players controlling spellcasting mage Willow, out to rescue an infant child from the clutches of Queen Bavmorda. Eventually, you'll rescue the mercenary Madmartigan, and from then on, the game alternates between the two characters for different stages, as well as giving you the ability to choose your preferred character later on.
The sections where you control Madmartigan are melee-focused, and draw obvious parallels with Strider. While they're decent enough, I definitely preferred the levels where you control Willow and use magic to combat enemies. The graduated magic bar that allows you to cast different spells the longer you hold down the fire button was neat idea.
You'll occasionally come across a shopkeeper from whom you can buy potions, charms and weapon upgrades. These get increasingly expensive, so it makes sense to farm enemies for coins, time permitting.

I played the NES rpg Willow game as a kid. Told some older kids at a pizza place I was an expert at Willow. They were all like, "yeah? Prove it!" They gave me a quarter and showed me this in the arcade corner and I was all like WTF? I was not an expert at this one and was made fun of mercilessly.
Your problem was living in a big city. I'm 45 years old and just learning that this "arcade" version exists. I'm very sorry you had ret@rded friends as a kid.
One of the best licensed arcade games of all time. The graphics are really great, the soundtrack is awesome, the sounds are very high quality for the time and have punch to them, the gameplay is really solid and follows the movie really well. Love how they promote the movie at the boot up screen. That stage screen just screams Alex Kidd. Those graphically drawn still images from the movie look pretty impressive. I don't understand why the devil dogs, Raziel and General Kael look so different from the still images during gameplay. Maybe likeness problems or time constraints? I like that the hawks and the shield ride give you so much bonus money. The music during Churlindrea's Forest is actually a remix of the battle music from the movie! I like how you took down two of the bosses with just one second left! You can actually get Franjean and Raul to help you on your quest if you can find them! Amazing playthrough!
I wanted to make sure I had enough cash to upgrade all weapons to the highest level, but I spent longer farming for gold coins than I probably should have done...I definitely ran it too close to the wire!

I absolutely f*cking love this game! Fantastic graphics beautiful colors awesome animation for its time!!! The fact that it's movie based and it's a badass side scrolling hack and Slash platformer just makes it's stand apart from other comparables.🤘
I love it when random things from my past pop on my youtube feed. Pretty sure this was the game I played when grandma took the family on a cruise to the Caribbean, must have been 8 or so. The casino had some machines near the door, obviously couldn't go inside, but I would just hang around the corner and throw quarters in the nearest machine. Lucked out and won about $40. Went and beat this game in the arcade they had. Good times.
I loved this movie growing up. I never saw the game, but the sprites are beautiful.
A little trick for you all: if you kill the boss at 14:00 with the Gold magic (full magic bar spell), the coins he drops will be all with the x2 bonus on. This will greatly help you in farming money for the shops. This is valid for all bosses further in the game, it's just a little tricky to cast gold magic at the right time. Try it!

@@MyBrothersKeeper101 Came here to say the same thing... all the enemies in boats and the fish can be x2 with gold magic as well... you can come out of this stage with >12k gold easy... the douboe headed beast is sweetest of all for gold! Really great skills though, especially on the horse and cart chase.

I completely forgot about this game till I re-heard the wolves howls, then it all came back. Played a few times and always had a presence at the arcade I went to before they closed shop.

If there is one thing that young people today will never feel is that excited feeling when you step into the Arcade, your mother just gave you a 20 for tokens, and you have the whole afternoon.

There's a certain brash innocence about 90s arcade games that's probably impossible to replicate now.
This was 80s.
I think it's also about the fact the biggest game companies of that time would put one of their "A" team on such a game. Today, Capcom or Nintendo would never put their "A" team on a 2d sidescroller project. Those are busy making the next Zelda or Resident Evil, etc.
The lake level was based on a deleted scene involving a shape shifting fish creature.

What I remember most about this game is that unless you spent EVERY bit of money you got on the attack power upgrade item, you could never beat it. Spend anything at all on other items, and your attack power would never be strong enough to beat some of the bosses before they killed you (Sorscha, Kael, and the island wizard were the toughest) and you were stuck there no matter how many quarters you had, since continuing sent you back.
Absolutely, also the uploader is playing this on easy mode.
My favorite part of the movie was when Willow started shooting hadoukens at Queen Bavmorda's soldiers and Madmartigan so gratefully joining Willow's journey. Jokes aside, this actually look like a damn fun retro game.
There should have been a segment halfway through the final level where your character gets turned into a pig....
It's impressive that Capcom made not one, but TWO really good Willow games (the other one being the NES game).
This is a game that will test your patience and drive you fucking insane. Not even Ghosts N Goblins was this brutal.
It came out at a time that most side scrollers would let you just buy your way through them (i.e. continue put you back exactly where you died) but did not follow that trend. I looked up this longplay because it's the only way I was gonna get to see most of the game...
Willow will always remain in my heart the number one arcade game of my Childhood❣️

It was planned for the SEGA Genesis in 1991, but probably due to the license problems, it never came out.

Who in hell had the time or the quarters to stand at this arcade cabinet long enough to actually play through the entire game in one go? Even to this day, via MAME with its unlimited play, I cannot muster the patience to play through even the first level. Maybe I’m just old and impatient, but wow. Just wow. Had it been ported to the consoles, maybe I could have played through it, but damn. What waste of a nice looking game. At least Warwick and Val can die happily knowing their likenesses were 16-bitified.

Arcade games was way ahead of consoles and home PC’s back in the day. This game released back in 1988 and it looks like a Nintendo 64 game!

Almost just like Strider, this one killed my pockets many times in the beginning until I completely memorized it. Missed these arcade titles.

This arcade game looks good 😺👍. My old Neighbour had Willow on the NES, when we were kids, and that was pretty awesome 😺👍. However, i had the Amiga version of that game - and that was the worst conversion i have ever played 😾! Also, i have the movie on DVD, and it's pretty good. The gameplay when playing as willow himself makes me think of a way less hard version of ghosts n goblins. Which makes sense.

I might be wrong but when the big guys throw the axe, they make a sound I heard from the game Magic Sword.
Just a tip, if you finish off bosses with gold magic, you'll get double the cash and pretty much eliminate the need for farming ;)

First big boss, the giant death dog, is basically the blue dog mini boss from Mega Man 2, Wood Man stage.

Both of these games versions this one, and the NES need to be rereleased in a remastered 2 games cartridge for switch Xbox series x, s, and PS5 with updated graphical enhancements with characters likenesses, and voices and both games also need an arcade 1up cabinet with artwork from the original arcade, and everything

The game is not as easy as it looks. It takes good teacniques to complete this game.

No but you can see how they used similar game play elements in Super Ghosts N Goblins and Mega Man X
