This recording is the best Hollander in my CD collection,
priding itself in the ideal cast even to the minor role of Stauermann.
Herr Weikl's beautiful bariton may be best appreciated in his Sachs and Wolfram and Onegin,
but I love his Hollander and Amfortas as well,
in which Herr Weikl's vast low voice sounds like the character having a big void in his heart.
Sadness, pain, despair, prayer, and everything else are there.

This recording certainly is one of the most thrilling of the many recordings of this extraordinary opera -- and after listening to this twice in a day, it is in my top three. Sinopoli masterfully conducts Wagner's score with complete cohesion of the orchestra and chorus -- both superbly represented here. Wagner is not only a supreme composer, but his librettos (here taken from the Heine extract) are compelling -- and in this opera his story is a brilliant re-telling of the tale. Every cast member is so fine -- and connected to both the music and each other. Weikl's Dutchman moves me as much for his tragic damnation, as he does for his searing depth of humanness in finding the possibility of love. One of Weikl's best interpretations. Studer sounds beautiful, though having heard her in person, the recording can't match hearing her beautiful lower notes, as one does in person. Domingo too, in exciting, fresh sound and dramatic energy. I will forgive him some of his German pronunciation and diction --- though I am not a 'nativist' who might delight in every opera being best performed by singers of the native language, I will take beauty of voice over perfect diction in translation. Of the other 'sea operas' -- Britten's 'Peter Grimes', and 'Billy Budd' -- that I love, Wagner has here created one of the most thrilling of nautical inspirations in music. And that's not even considering the vast catalog of musical compositions with the sea as its themes. A memorable recording to experience.

Nein. er hat die Partie nie gesungen (also meines WIssens nicht)! die Partie des Wotan ist ein hoher Bass! Robert Hale hat in den Zeiten vor und während "Wotan" auch Mephisto, wie auch Colline gesungen; Basilio; König Marke, Sparafucile!
