These productions were already the beginning of the Wagner desecration we have today, especially at Bayreuth. Only during the 80s there was an attempt to be faithful to the Master's artistic vision again. But at least with records none of that matters, if you don't look at the artwork.

The best Valkyrie ensemble performances of the 1970-75 Horst era (Randova, Reynolds etc.!), or,, actually, ANY Bayreuth production as far as I’m concerned. Then, of course, Gwyneth Jones/Marita Napier as Brunnhilde/Sieglinde…………….my favorite ACT III (to date).

I like Solti's swift tense conducting, what a pity Nimsgern has the wrong voice for Wotan, he has an Alberich voice. Wagner basses and bass baritones basically come in two types: the nobles like Wotan, Hans Sachs, Amfortas, Gurnemanz, Marke, Heinrich, Wolfram and the Dutchman, and the nasties like Alberich, Klingsor, Beckmesser, Hagen Hunding and Fafner. The Nobles have to have an intrinsically noble voice plus a clean vocal line and excellent intonation. The nasties still need to have a voice but they can get away with ugly voice production and rough musicality as long as they portray the character convincingly. The nobles can stray into the nasty repertoire but it's difficult for a nasty to be convincing as a noble.
