I doubt that, taking into consideration, no a/c in the middle of summer, who is going to want to sit in the sun for 3 hours in 90 degree heat. They could not fill Tropicana Field and I doubt they will this one either.
What's wild is that Steinbrenner Field's dimensions are EXACTLY the same as Yankee Stadium. Be interesting to see how the Rays play in a field emulating Yankee Stadium.
Not just the dimensions. They oriented the stadium so that the sun field (Left) is the same between the minor league park and the big ballpark in the Bronx.
Honestly, I commend the way everyone just came to a final decision on a solution for this situation, immediately. Nothing would have been worse than carrying this drama into early January, or so, as Spring Training approached. This is what it is, it's certainly not optimal, but it is what will happen and it needed to happen sooner than later. Play Ball!
Outside of the fact that it will probably be about 1000 degrees for night games in July and August with the inevitable rain delays, it is the most viable option for 2025 insofar as keeping the team in Tampa. The long term solution is the new ball park.
As a Yankees fan this was the outcome I was hoping for - not for any financial reason but as you said it just makes the most logistical sense as a temporary location. TV broadcasts of Yankees spring training games are definitely much simpler with fewer camera angles, but hopefully they can work it out. Glad they can stay in the area and not have to play for Mickey Mouse.
@ I understand that 100% and that’s my point ..Why go to Las Vegas at all when they are not even wanted and the TV revenue is a lot smaller than if they just stay in Sacramento .This has to be the worst business deal in baseball history . The only reason the Raiders get the support they get is because a majority of their fan base is in LA who comes to Las Vegas for a weekend ,The A’s have no fan base in LA or Las Vegas who is a Dodger town who even have a store on the Strip ..But as they say good luck the lights stay on thanks to the failures of others .
Rays fan that moved from St. Pete to Tampa this summer. The humidity is going to be brutal but i'm very interested in seeing MLB games here. The 11k capacity at Tampa is 3k better than anything in Pinellas. Ive gone to a few Tarpons games and its perfectly fine as a short term replacement. Tarpons games are pretty empty, I imagine they play on side fields, or if it's a mutual deal, maybe they can play at the Rays ST training stadium in Port Charlotte.
Steinbrenner Field, which opened in 1996 as Legends Field, sits across Dale Mabry Highway from Raymond James Stadium. It provides the largest capacity (11,026) of the spring stadiums, along with 13 suites, several club areas, social spaces and cabana seating, plus other upgrades from a $40 million renovation prior to the 2017 season. Equally appealing, it has much of the required major-league-standard equipment, facilities and amenities for players in place. As a result, the facility would require the fewest upgrades to meet MLB regular season and players association standards.
The only time people will go is April and maybe May. After that, too hot and humid and wet season. Miami Marlins played at Dolphin stadium from 1993-2011. They had plenty of rain delays and postponements. It worked, but their attendance was low.

The best place to build a new stadium would be the Tampa Fairgrounds, where the Hard Rock is across the street and the amphitheater is. The Florida State Fair will have to move.
What's a "doubleheader"? Unusual circumstances, call for unique solutions. Sometimes working together with opponents is required. It benefits everybody.
Just think the Rays fans at Steinbrenner Field will be able to park in lighted, concrete parking lots while just across the street Bucs fans park on the grass for $50.
I'm personally a Rays fan who, in my opinion, feel like Rays fans on the Tampa side have been dramatic about the bridge. It's really not that big of a deal. I've lived on that side and commuted to Rays games. I've also lived on the St. Pete side and commuted to Tampa for Bolts and Bucs and never complained. Fans of other teams who live an hour+ away make the pilgrimage at least once or twice a year because you love your team, want to support them, and for many they chose to live where they do in proximity to the field, so get over it. Now that the Rays will be playing in Tampa across from RayJay, fans better be filling that stadium up with 80%+ occupancy every night to give credence to this idea that the Rays have to put the stadium in Tampa. It'll be close for them, the people from Orlando and Lakeland now have a shorter commute, and the St. Pete folks have to commute anyway for sports game. If they don't routinely fill that stadium, I'm going to call BS on the whole "St. Pete is a bad location" idea. It's just that people don't go to games - but not for a lack of support mind you. It'll just show that the difference between Hillsborough and Pinellas won't be as big of a deal as folks are making it out to be. On a side note, those games are going to be BRUTAL in the heat, and with all the rain. Hopefully not too many games get rained out. People used to love giving the Trop a hard time, but I think they are really going to miss it after this season.
I would suggest regarding “Rain Outs” at the outdoor TAMPA Ballpark that I if a one occurs against a Divisional Opponent then the RAYS should consider making up those games at the Away Stadium. This is possible because of the numerous times these teams will play each other throughout the season. All other Non-Divisional Opponents would have to attempt to play Double-Headers there in TAMPA. If these Make up Double-Headers are Single Admission then the RAYS would lose the Gate Revenue regardless so having additional games a Real MLB Stadium would benefit the Players.
It's fine in the spring in February and March when the Yankees play there, but it's going to be brutal playing in the Florida heat and humidity in June, July and August
Weather wise - last 2-3 months of season were the worst for rain delays , felt like every other day was delayed or outright canceled which is normal for FSL teams to not have even amount of games played
I appreciate all the work you do to give us good, unbiased sports journalism. You do so good in breaaking down the reality of given sports situations, both good AND bad.
I’d imagine the Yankees rookie ball and Single A team will use the same field for the scheduled conflicts ( rookie ball games tend to be 12-3 or so ) while single A starts at 6:30pm
The Steinbrenners are from the Tampa area and the Yankees have offices there. Hal said he understands the community there and that’s more important than a rivalry
I can’t help but be reminded of the Coyotes situation in Mullet, plans for a new stadium with no certainty while playing in a non suitable facility. Hopefully they can get it figured out
This made the most sense by far and I though it was crazy all those who were saying “oh the Yankees would never let them use it because they are rivals”?!? It ain’t 1930 anymore, these teams are billion dollar corporations working in collaboration and see each other as business partners not rivals regardless of what the fanbases think. It is a nonsense take to say the Yankees wouldnt let the Rays use their spring training facility when the Yankees will do whatever generates the most revenue for MLB baseball & the Yankees and the more profitable the Rays, the more money in the Yankees pocket.
I love the grounded reality of this channel!!! *If you are not in the financial market space right now, you are making a huge mistake. I understand that it could be due to ignorance, but if you want to make your money work for you..prevent inflation.*

As I start mentally thinking about this-- the Dodgers played at the LA Coliseum (with the screens in LF) and the Giants played at Seals Stadium when they both first moved out to LA. I'd have to see Jarry Park, but I know Arlington Stadium mainly built bleacher seats when the Washington Senators moved and upgraded that Texas League ballpark...
@@HHSGDFootballJPD You could say Jarry Park in Montreal and Sicks Stadium in Seattle in 1969, since expansion was bumped up the stadiums weren't built yet.
speaking of television: Fan Duel Sports Network (Diamond Sports Group - formerly Ballys) has struck deals with the Rays, Tigers, Braves, Angels, Marlins and Cardinals on restructured deals for 2025.
I haven’t heard much about the fate of the struggling Ballys/Diamond lately. Sports media has always fascinated me. I hope Brodie does a video on that.
I wonder which team will have a worse home Sacramento A's or Tampa Bay. Which will be hotter to play in? It's going to be super hot in both locations to watch Baseball. If I were a gambler I would bet the Ray's will be there for 4 years. The new stadium is likely delayed a year until 2029.
I’ll probably go to more games now that they are closer to Orlando. But as you said outside in Florida summer will be a big issue. It rains almost every afternoon.
Steinbrenner Field is a good ballpark. I’ll definitely fly in to catch a Rays game or two there. I really think the best place for a new Rays ballpark was one of the Ybor City sites, but that’s just my $0.02….
Fans don't want to cross the bridge. Are you listening owners of the Rays? Scap St Pete ballpark plans. Build in Orlando, a major league city and tourist attraction!!
I don’t love the 2 AL teams in minor league parks point. The two situations seem so different. The A’s irregardless of the future should never have been allowed to play in Sacramento unless it had been announced it was going to be their permanent home. They should’ve figured out how to stay in the coliseum until the permanent home was ready. Tampa has no choice unless they were going to be leaving Tampa permanently.
I'm glad at least they have made a decision. Now we can move forward. Kudos to Yankees for their gesture even though we are fierce rivals, maybe we can now put that to rest.
Its possible that you can put a cheaper roof on Tropicana. The fancy Teflon coated fabric is a 20-30 year roof. They can throw a cheaper 5 year roof that could last just a bit longer than the construction schedule for the new stadium
It looks like it could be a major league stadium with some additions. The stadium the Blue Jays played in when they had to play in Buffalo was nice, also. The Sacramento stadium looks straight AA.
You should do more detail about financials curious how this works... city gave 6.5 mil already do they get 6.5 back from insurance... rays have to lease from yankees and how much and will insurance policy pay that... lots of financial questions...
I wonder what's going to happen with all the rain out games since Steinbrenner stadium doesn't have a roof and it rains a lot in Florida not to mention the scorching heat during day games
I’ve heard the biggest reason for the Rays’ attendance problem was just that it was an annoying drive, so they’re moving to a smaller stadium where they’ll have higher demand for seats.
Assuming the new stadium plans included demolishing the Trop after completion, it might be possible to do the demo first and then build an upgraded stadium on the same footprint and reusing some of the structural elements. May be the lowest cost option. Wondering if that is being considered?
In fairness, I don't think anyone could have predicted Milton and what it would do. As for the A's, that's 100% on Manfred. He makes me miss Bud Selig.
Average attendance is ~17k, so selling out all of the games still leaves 1/3 of the ticket revenue lost. All the seats look amazing at Steinbrenner though, but hard to make it up to lost luxury box lessors. If they can recoup $25M from insurance and if they can stay in the $56M budget and if they can amortize the $31M over 3 years instead of 2, the economic impact of patching Tropicana may be doable, but that is a lot of ifs.
I actually think some of the players might like the idea of playing in minor league park. Some of the players have problems adjusting to bigger ball parks and more fans/noise. They still get to play 82 away games in bigger ball parks also.
The weather will definitely be a major factor also let's see the loyalty of the fans if they cannot sell out 11,000 every night they should sell the team to a loyal fan base like Buffalo
Not to mention maybe working with the Yanks on getting some OF seating in CF to add to the number of fans. Yeah, there were no perfect solutions to this. I think the free agency is the least of their issues. (they were never major players in that anyway).. the facilities are already MLB standard.. probably better than Fenway or Wrigley (because they were built before WWI) because the Yanks do spend so much time there. The Tarpons.. at the worst can use a back lot field and upgrade some seating.. it is A-Ball anyway... They'll figure it out.
The Tarpons I guess could play the conflict home games at the opponents stadiums and bat last in those games since all the teams in that league are I think within the state of Florida
Dunedin Blue Jays stadium would not of worked, parking is abysmal and minimal , the Clearwater Threshers stadium has way better parking but is the most popular team attendance wise for the FSL compared to Tarpons/ JAYS both being bottom feeders , downside is that stadium is old , pretty often dugouts can flood 2-3 times a year / locker rooms are nice however
The Rays should stay there until their new ballpark is built I know its not ideal but I feel for the Rays as they had no choice whereas my exes did and we alll know what happened
Eighteen different Rays opponents are scheduled to make only one trip to Tampa this season ... the AL Central, the AL West, and the eight NL teams that visit.
Keep the Rays in Steinbrenner Stadium until the new stadium in St Pete is completed. Although they averaged 16,515 in Tropicana last year it’s still the best option and it’s closer to my house.
One thing you didn't mention, a lot of money comes from luxury seats and they will lose that for a year. But if it goes more than a year they could have trouble getting those commitments back.
As a result, the facility would require the fewest upgrades to meet MLB regular season and players association standards.
The joke that the Rays are a Yankees affiliate just got one step closer to reality. I wish they relocated to Disney to show the Orlando market could support them.
Fans don’t cross the bridge. That’s the problem. With the 5 minor league teams in the immediate area of Tropicana field most fans that go to Tropicana field live within 10 miles of that stadium.
Easier said than done. The financial situation is bleak. The area got hit by a multi billion dollar disaster. The city has to have money to build the new stadium in addition to rebuilding damaged infrastructure from the storms. This is an unprecedented situation. I don’t expect the Rays to have a new stadium until 2029 or later.

Mosquitoes buffet 🦟
All night games only
Weather wise - last 2-3 months of season were the worst for rain delays , felt like every other day was delayed or outright canceled which is normal for FSL teams to not have even amount of games played
I appreciate all the work you do to give us good, unbiased sports journalism.
You do so good in breaaking down the reality of given sports situations, both good AND bad.
Great reporting Brodie!
I’d imagine the Offense would be crazy high as well from just comparing the Toronto Blue Jays short tenure at Dunedin Jays stadium
Imagine the Rays win the WS at Steinbrenner Field!😂
I can’t help but be reminded of the Coyotes situation in Mullet, plans for a new stadium with no certainty while playing in a non suitable facility. Hopefully they can get it figured out
The worst part about the whole situation is having to play at a stadium called Steinbrenner field.
I wonder how summer thunderstorms will effect the games
This made the most sense by far and I though it was crazy all those who were saying “oh the Yankees would never let them use it because they are rivals”?!? It ain’t 1930 anymore, these teams are billion dollar corporations working in collaboration and see each other as business partners not rivals regardless of what the fanbases think. It is a nonsense take to say the Yankees wouldnt let the Rays use their spring training facility when the Yankees will do whatever generates the most revenue for MLB baseball & the Yankees and the more profitable the Rays, the more money in the Yankees pocket.
Obviously its a much smaller field. But when they pack this place every night, moving the team to Tampa may be back on the table.
It's not a smaller field. It's exactly the same as Yankee Stadium's dimensions. It has less seating, but the field is exactly the same.
What kept it off the table is the financing. Hillsborough County or the City of Tampa don't have the money to 'help' Sternberg.
I love the grounded reality of this channel!!!

I feel sympathy and empathy for our country, low income earners are suffering to survive, and I appreciate Wayne. You've helped my family with your advice. imagine investing $30,000 and receiving $95,460 after 28 days of trading.
I'm in a similar situation where should I look to increase income? Do you have any advice? What did you do? Thank you
Well I engage in nice side hustles like investing, and the good thing is I do it with one one of the best(Michael Wayne), he's really good!
Did someone just mention Mr Wayne!? Damn! You just made my day; what a coincidence.. I've worked with him for over 2years and I can tell how good he is
It's great to see you guys talking about Michael Wayne, This man changed the game for me. Good Man❤️
Wow, has to be a MLB first in all history. Not just one, but two teams, in 2025, will be playing their home games in minor league ballparks!
Curious how this affects home runs and pitching stats? Good for hitters - bad for pitchers ?
@@Gordie-v7n most MiLB stadiums are at MLB dimensions, and Steinbrunner apparently is the same dimensions as old Yankee Stadium.
@@Gordie-v7n Blue Jays crushed the ball when they played in minor league parks during Covid
Love Pinellas county #727
largo!!!!
The Blue Jays spring training stadium is gorgeous and brand new too, and is in Dunedin - relatively close. But it only seats 8,500.
6,500 fixed seats....2,000 (standing or sitting on the berm)
speaking of television: Fan Duel Sports Network (Diamond Sports Group - formerly Ballys) has struck deals with the Rays, Tigers, Braves, Angels, Marlins and Cardinals on restructured deals for 2025.
I haven’t heard much about the fate of the struggling Ballys/Diamond lately. Sports media has always fascinated me. I hope Brodie does a video on that.
does it rain a lot there?
You were right the first time -- the Oakland A's.
Last time I was this early to a video, the Texas Rangers were still playing in Washington
Free agents care about one thing ($$$). To think that they would not want to play in a small ballpark is idiocy.
Steinbrenner Field would be an upgrade over the Trop.
Nothing about this situation is optimal and as far as I'm concerned, this is a good enough solution for one season
Steinbrenner Field is a good ballpark. I’ll definitely fly in to catch a Rays game or two there.
I really think the best place for a new Rays ballpark was one of the Ybor City sites, but that’s just my $0.02….
Why didn’t they temporarily move into Raymond James Stadium in Tampa?
Maybe move the team to Tampa permanently with a new stadium
Fans don't want to cross the bridge. Are you listening owners of the Rays? Scap St Pete ballpark plans. Build in Orlando, a major league city and tourist attraction!!
MiLB schedules 6 games Tues-Sun most weeks of the year. Home or Away. 6 games per week against the opponent. To minimize travel.
The Oakland Coliseum is hardly MLB anymore. Will serve for soccer a couple of years and then demolishment is coming.
Steinbrenner Field was built like a major league stadium. The only difference is the seat number.
George Steinbrenner loved the area (had a home here) & would have stepped up in the wake of a hurricane I'm sure, so I'm not that surprised.
How will they handle the Season Ticket holders? Seems this small of a stadium could essentially be filled by Season Ticket holders only.
I'm glad at least they have made a decision. Now we can move forward. Kudos to Yankees for their gesture even though we are fierce rivals, maybe we can now put that to rest.
As an Orlando local, this was a no brainer. This is easily accessible as opposed to Tropicana
Its possible that you can put a cheaper roof on Tropicana. The fancy Teflon coated fabric is a 20-30 year roof. They can throw a cheaper 5 year roof that could last just a bit longer than the construction schedule for the new stadium
Isn’t it amazing that the two organizations that had the worst stadiums and stadium situation some how got worse? The A’s is a shame
…oh…and I made it to the end of the video Brodie, I know you appreciate that.
MLB allows the A's to play in minor league stadium, Ray's to follow, heck, Menfred has managed to degrade MLB like no other commissioner before.
😂😅😂😅😂😅
In fairness, I don't think anyone could have predicted Milton and what it would do. As for the A's, that's 100% on Manfred. He makes me miss Bud Selig.
@@stemlator both have Hurricane, one is Hurricane Milton, the other is Hurricane Fisher.
@@stemlator MLB would have been better off without Selig and "Manfraud" Manfred
It's going to be 6000 degrees in the outfield there, you guys go ahead and watch baseball in Florida in the summertime. 50% rainouts
Awesome solution . . . That's a nice stadium for single A, Maybe single A can go to Orlando Doesn't Oakland have an open stadium....
All things being equal, I don’t see how the Rays could ask for a better situation.
It's not lost $, the Rays attendance is terrible in old Tropicana Field
The average attendance for the Rays was 16,515. Not much more than the 11-12K of Steinbrenner Field.
I’ll be visiting this stadium this year 😊
The Tarpons I guess could play the conflict home games at the opponents stadiums and bat last in those games since all the teams in that league are I think within the state of Florida
Steinbrenner field has the exact field dimensions as Yankee Stadium, so except for capacity, it is a major league ballpark.
Sweet!! GO TAMPA BAY RAYS!
Those aren’t real requirements as we’ve learned in the A’s situation.
They should make a light rail connection to connect all of Tampa Bay
They should just fast track the new stadium and play at Steinbrenner field until it’s ready
