What I find hilarious is, this is arguably the *worst time* they could've chosen to start cutting. With the A's out of the Bay Area, this could easily be the time to get the spurned fans (especially considering they CONTRIBUTED to their leaving by outright REFUSING to give up their rights to the San Jose market when the A's had considered a stadium there- which is bad enough, but then gets worse when you remember the A's *gave them those rights* when they were on the verge of moving in the early 1990s- a dick move on the Giants' part that arguably already mostly killed any potential new fanbase for them there). Yet instead of taking advantage and reasserting themselves as *THE* Bay Area team, they decide *now* is the time to start cutting like they're John Fisher throwing a bitch fit.
I remember UrinatingTree offered an analogy about the Twins that could apply here- what's been going in the Bay Area is essentially an entire sports league taking their fanbase and slapping them across the face like they made a GI Jane 2 joke. If i'm in the Bay Area, I wouldn't blame them if they just stopped caring for the sport altogether after all these dick punches. The teams seemed to stop caring about how they felt, so why should THEY return the favor?

I really hope that payroll isn't gutted. Makes some of the contracts (Chapman, Lee) very questionable if that was to be the case. I'm all for playing the kids and finding out some of the younger players real value but that should have been all of August & September when the postseason became out of reach.
From the fans perspective, they finally got a win by firing Farhan and now they might have to put up with cost cutting. If that's the definition of the "memory making business", it doesn't look very appealing to the apetite.

What the F is the actual plan in the SFG front office? Us fans have had no friggin clue what the plan or direction of the team has been for FZ’s entire miserable failed tenure.
And now, he’s *finally* gone, aaaaaand… we still don’t know what the plan is.
If you’re going to sign Chapman to an expensive contract that no other team in mlb would have given him, thennnn why are we cutting the budget now??
Getting under the tax is understandable. Especially if we’re getting rid of Yaz, Wade, Flores, and the like. Those are the perfect cuts to make to save money on the payroll. Its addition by subtraction. They’ve been good Giants, we like those players, great guys. But they’re just not going to cut it if we’re going to try to beat the Dodgers, Padres, Phillies, Braves, Yankees, etc etc to get to the WS, or even just to get to the playoffs.
I just have a bad feeling that they’re going to cut those guys to save money.. and then *only* sign Kim for short or 2nd, maybe one of the big 3 pitchers… aaaand that’s it for this off-season. Makes me sick to my stomach thinking about it. If that’s all they do it will be *really* depressing.
They need to cut those listed players, perfect. Then sign Kim & 1 of the big 3 pitchers, sounds good. AND THEN they still need to go get another middle infielder (Adames along with Kim would be perfect!), *AND* a star outfielder!!
We need a Shortstop, 2nd baseman, AND a 3-4-5 hitting star outfielder (Santander, trade for Luis Robert, or something similar).
We badly need those 3 spots filled, an not just by average players like the last 6 years as they’ve done. We desperately need *STAR* 3-4-5 hitters who can drive in runs, hit situationally, etc.
We don’t even need Soto.. in fact it would be better if we didn’t get him. Because we need 3-4 really good hitters/defensive fielders to make this team playoff competitive. Just getting Soto and nothing else won’t help this roster… we need too much for one player to take up all their available free agent budget.
But, makes me sick to know that they’re not going to give up draft picks to sign someone like Adames or Santander who have qualifying offers.
All they’re going to do is get Kim and 1 big pitcher. Ugh 🤮
We need so much more than that.
Screw the 2nd rd and 5th rd draft picks.. Go sign Kim AND Adames to lock up short & 2nd. Then go trade for a star 3-4 hitting outfielder (Robert or similar).
Us fans don’t necessarily want them to just ‘spend more and more and more money.’ It’s not about how much is spent.. it’s about how well they’re building the team. Chapman is not a cleanup 4 hitter on a playoff contending team. He’s a good player. But he’s a good *ROLE* player, not the main guy who hits 4th every day. He needs to be hitting in the 6-7 spot because there are stars hitting in the 4-5 spots ahead of him for this team to be competitive.
Oh and Brody.. you’d rather ‘draw from within?’ We don’t have anyone from within who is as good as Soto, or Adames, or Santander, or Luis Robert, or etc etc etc…. THAT’s why ‘us fans’ want to acquire talent from outside the organization. We need to get better immediately, or rebuild entirely. Pick a lane Giants. We don’t mind rebuilding and going young. And we don’t mind spending and competing now.
What we DO mind is this constant cruising in the middle lane with average, aging veterans like Slater, Yaz, Wade, Flores, etc etc etc.
I’ll ask again, What the F is the plan right now Giants?!!? Rebuild and go young, or spend intelligently and compete now?
ENOUGH with this average-veteran- .500 - hope and pray for the 3rd wildcard spot every damn year BS. Seriously.
Who PLANS to AIM FOR the 3rd wildcard every year?! We’ve had it.
Posey needs to come out and tell the fanbase CLEARLY what the plan is for this upcoming season, and going into the next few seasons.
Does the front office even know what the plan is anyway??? *IS* there a plan at all???

I have even been skipping through some NHL Highlights at Sportsnet since the season started , usually a very very loyal fanbase across the entire league --- seeing a lot of empty seats at many arenas , different teams --- not sure about NBA and NFL --- but seems to me like someone commented recently --- they have priced out regular working class fans everywhere , and i am not just talking playoffs.
People struggle to pay rent / mortgages.
What's the first thing they cut ?
Unnecessary expenses --- new purchases , vacations , eating out , attending concerts , attending pro sports.
But honestly i am just speculating...

Giants are not in trouble, they just need a different approach. Actually are in the top 10 on profitability. They just can’t get FA to come to SF and don’t have the minors yet to build so why spend the money. That’s more the issue. They get boatloads of money from Mission Bay development that they don’t have to share with anyone, so they are ok. They just need a different approach.

  • @AnnPorkins
    @AnnPorkins 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

For me, I think it all depends how they spend their money this off-season. Getting under the luxury tax makes sense no matter what direction they take. This team isn’t one free agent away from bonafide contention. Giving up draft picks to sign Adames and doing nothing else doesn’t make a ton of sense, nor does the Farhan “spend ~$15M on a bunch of decent veterans” strategy.
And if they cut guys like Yaz, Wade, and Doval without replacing them, that also doesn’t make sense. They just gave Chapman $151M, so penny pinching doesn’t make sense if there’s not a young replacement in-house.
If the 2025 Giants are a playoff team, it’ll be due to a slew of young guys stepping up and solidifying into a core they can build around. Their spending should help the 2025 team be better without saddling the 2026 and beyond team from making splashes when their window of contention is hopefully sustainable.

@@AnnPorkins I totally disagree. I think if you stick with the philosophy of, we’re gonna have three or four aces on the staff and just lights out pitching department and we’re gonna have a decent above average or just average offensive lineup with good defense you’re gonna win in that park it’s been proven. It’s not some mystery have Logan Webb have Robbie Ray have Kyle Harrison and have one other big name star like a Max Frey or even a mixtures are like in five years ago, but if you don’t have three bona fide All-Star aces on this team, this is just not gonna work it’s just that simple so spend the money but spend it on aces that will win new gamesand not be hurt all the time Kyle Harrison I hope it will be good but the perfect example is Logan Webb Day day out he is gonna give you everything he has which is probably seven or more.

    • @AnnPorkins
      @AnnPorkins วันที่ผ่านมา

@ I agree that they would be wise to deepen the pitching staff, and having several ace-like starters would offset some offensive shortcomings. But it seems like you’re lumping Ray and Harrison with Webb, and that I disagree with. Harrison certainly has the upside to develop a lot more, but he’s no sure bet to be anything other than a one-trick pony who’s a fifth starter. And Ray has been nothing but hurt and league average since his 2021 Cy Young. It’s not impossible for him to bounce back to that level, but I think 150 innings of league average pitching is about all we can expect from him - anything more is gravy.
I stand by my comment about the 2025 team being successful if the young guys take the next step, and I think it applies even if the Giants manage to get an ace like Snell/Burnes/Fried and a short stop. They’ll continue to be a roughly .500 team if the rotation is just Webb, Snell, and the production they got from everyone else past year. But if Birdsong and/or Harrison turn into bonafide studs, that’s a huge development of its young crop of players. Similarly, if they can give Jordan Hicks enough extra days off, I think he could sustain success as a starter. That would be a boon as well.
If they get even more production out of a handful of guys like l Ramos, Fitzgerald, Jung-Hoo Lee, and Bailey, that’s another in-house youth-based development that will bode well for them improving as a club. That was the point of my last paragraph, and that’s almost completely dependent on how the younger guys step up - not who they spend money on to join the team. The team could land a few quality free agents and still struggle to go beyond .500 if their young guys don’t step up. On the other hand, the front office could disappoint and do nothing this offseason and the Giants could still be a better team than 2024 if many of those young guys step up. Therefore, I think the key to the Giants in 2025 is largely already on the roster, for better or for worse.

If they wanted to take a real risk to make the team better, they would be more explicit about building from within and immediately and clearly say they aren’t going to pursue guys like Soto. That said, Roki Sasaki is someone they should strongly pursue, because he’s good, he’s young, he will add Japanese fans and media, and the Giants might as well choose to tank, if he goes to another NL West team (except the Rockies).

Even if Soto was enticed to consider the Giants, the Giants need to build out this team ready to accommodate him which is effectively the infield. Soto negotiations could go into 2025 before a decision is made so sort out other FA priorities beforehand. Most of the signings last time around looked to be more reactionary rather than methodical.
Honestly, Soto is like a 1% shot in coming to SF. Left handed sluggers (that aren't Barry Bonds) are disadvantaged at Oracle Park. They're coming of a 'mid' season and also, Soto would have to give up #22 as it's a retired number (Will Clark). Not too many boxes being checked off. It would be the contract and a massive overbid to land him.
I really hope the first memory in the "memory making business" isn't gutting payroll though.

... The Giants can't spend their way into contention rite now... GETTING JUAN SOTO WOULD NOT MAKE THEM A CONTENDER.
1 player is not going to fix this team, the Giants Rotation is a fucking mess... You have Webb, a lot of you would say Robby Ray... WELL GUESS WHAT, I am not going to assume Robby Ray goes back to being a Cy Young type guy till I see it. I think that SOME of the Kids like Birdsong have potential, but they are also unproven, we tried Hicks as a starter and he couldn't last the season, as many people (including me) predicted, and Snell Left.
    Logan Webb
    Robby Ray???
    Hayden Birdsong???
    Jordan Hicks???
    Kyle Harrison???
    Mason Black???
    Landen Roupp???
    Keaton Winn???
DOES ANYONE THINK ADDING CORBIN BURNS WOULD MAKE THE GIANTS A LEGIT COMPETITOR TO THE DODGERS WITH THESE ROTATION OPTIONS? Say they also signed Juan Soto, do you think that Juan Soto by himself fixes the Giants offense... Opposing teams would just walk him, you think Matt Chapman is sufficient line up protection to keep that from happening? Those 2 together will DOUBLE the payroll... you won't be able to do anything else, you will be over the cap and that will limit what you can do in international signings... Free agents aren't how you build a team, they are how you put the finishing touches on a team that is already close, to put you over the top. IF we find out that Birdsong and Roupp and Harrison are all what we hope they could be ALL OF THEM, AND Robby Ray bounces back and has a good season, the Giants will have a legit rotation, does anyone think that that is going to happen? Does anyone think that literally every one of those guys is going to pan out and be at least a middle of the rotation guy? If you get lucky 1 of the rooks pans out and Ray has a good season, combine that with Webb and they got 3 pitchers... YOU NEED MORE LIKE 6, how many guys not named Logan Webb make 32 starts a year boys... You need 5 starters and a backup starter who can be in the pen for spot starts... Corbin Burns by himself only helps if at least 3 of the rooks pan out AND Robby Ray bounces back.
This team isn't close enough for Juan Soto to put them over the top... even with Corbin Burns. They might be a playoff team, but they wouldn't make it out of the first round, and they would have so much money tied up in 3 players that they wouldn't be able to do anything meaningful FOR YEARS. The Giants need to play the rooks, see if any of them are worth anything, bring up Eldridge and see if he is what we hope he is, IF the stars align and Ramos isn't a flash in the pan, Jung-Hu Lee plays more like he did in Korea, Harrison and Birdsong work out, Bailey manages to last a whole season rather than falling apart at the all-star break Chapman can prove that he isn't starting to decline like most players do at 32... Do you see the problem... If everything works out perfectly (which is completely unrealistic) then maybe free agents put you over the top in 2026... The Giants are not anywhere near close enough for free agents to make them contenders... We need to play the kids and find out how close we really are, or how far, if a bunch of them pan out then maybe trades put us over the top in 26, if not then maybe it's time to trade Webb and just start over...

    For the 3,456,789th time:
Signing someone like Soto only works if the Giants were the proverbial " one player away from World Series contention "- the Giants are at least three players away.
Oracle Park punishes hitters, getting a Soto-type hitter won't happen in free agency, it will take a trade-or developing/drafting one.
Oracle Park, while not as cold as Candlestick Park, still gets cold at night. Many players don't like playing in cold weather. Fact of life, another reason free agents won't necessarily come to San Francisco.
Invest in better player development and scouting, and PLAY THE KIDS. The kids may have an upside. There's no quick fix

Cutting costs is not a sign of collusion but is a sign of changing economic dynamics from the loss of RSNs. I remember a time when the Giants won the World Series in 2010, 2012, 2014. The Giants actually play in San Francisco not San Jose, Santa Clara and sorry folks Oakland. Warriors play in San Francisco over Oakland. Go Oakland cricket 🏏, Ballers and other alternative sports teams in Oakland.

However if they don’t get sign or trade to improve to compete I guarantee it will start reflecting in their ticket sales at some point. This economy it’s tough. So it can also hurt their pockets if the team isn’t good. I know I won’t travel several hours to watch mediocrity. What I take away from this segment is that Giants ownership are complete morons. Under Zaidi, the team has eroded their foundation to complete dependance on min-maxing the roster they DO have (which is mostly replacement level guys) to try and put up a facade of competitiveness. Without that min-maxing and nowhere near enough high-end talent, this team is primed to COLLAPSE next year or in 2026. Yet we don't rebuild OR overpay for the actual needle moving talent that can push the Giants over.
Why did the Giants commit SO much money to Chapman if they are CUTTING the budget!? Chapman is not a foundational player, yet he is objectively their best position player going into next year. This team may have dumped Zaidi, but the team still has ZERO direction or conviction to do what is needed to make the team a contender. And LORD Posey is not going to change that, especially in a year or two. I WOULD call the farm system a BIG problem. We were ranked LAST in the latest farm system rankings which is WORSE than when Zaidi took over. I think we are at least 3 years away from having a chance of being relevant and that is a scathing indictment on the Giants as a franchise.

It wont make a difference. The Giants will be the 4th best team in the NL West. Since Farhan took over they should've been doing a rebuild, but Farhan was and is so bad that they screwed that up. It's what happens when you have hire someone who doesn't understand baseball and the business. Buster understands baseball and will surround him with the correct people they will get back under the cap and hopefully not bring back all the ARB garbage that they currently have. Flores, bye, Yaz bye, Wade bye bye Doval bye bye and Rogers get out of here. All the ARB guys are so bad and wouldn't do anything on any other rosters.
