      @@spanishafterhours "on" as a preposition of place usually refers to something that has 2 dimensions not 3. You sunbathe "on" the beach, the boat is "on" the sea (the surface), the fish are "in" the sea. If you say "at" the beach you are referring to the general area of the beach but you could be tomando una cerveza en una terraza

      @@johnremargayla5131 I was referring to Laura's example: esta en la playa
      and she said it would be "She is *in* the beach" which is incorrect. I only wanted to show the difference between "in" and "on", in the same way we sit *on* a chair not *in* or *at* a chair. My American friends agree that if we want to specify where a person is we would say *on* the beach/chair and if we say *at* the beach we mean NOT in the park or the mountains. La gracia de aprender idiomas és que hay tantas variaciones de expresiones y maneras de ver la vida. Entonces por una está *en la playa*, otra *a la playa* Pero bueno, lo más important és que podamos mejorar nuestro nivel de español mientras disfrutamos de la encantadora Laura @Spanish After Hours

    If you were to say, "he's in the beach," in English, we might be inclined to think he's dead and buried in the sand. 😅

  • @STF7537

    In English 'the beach' means the sand itself. So if you say someone is 'on the beach' it means they are standing on the sand. If you say they're 'at the beach' it means they're in the general area of the sand and may be on the sand, or on the boardwalk, or even in the parking lot. If you say they are 'in the beach' it means under the sand. To us, 'in the beach' means 'within the sand.' In this instance 'in' has a similar meaning to 'surrounded by.' Hope that helps.

    • @azuriu
      @azuriu ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not a native English speaker but if you can replace "in" with "inside", it's "in", if not, it's "on". So "she's in the hotel" or "she's on the hotel's roof" :) In any case, these are great videos!😊

      "In the beach" really just sounds like nonsense to me. I wouldn't assume someone was under the sand if you said that, I'd definitely be asking for clarification. "On the beach" sounds less weird, but I can't really imagine using that either.

      @@spanishafterhours I can understand how difficult it is to differentiate between "in" and "on" and it can be quite confusing as there are always exceptions to any "rule". Because the book is partially buried i would suggest it is "in" not "on".
      "In" is perhaps similar to "dentro" in that it is "inside".
      "On" is similar to "sobre"
      For example....in the house, in the car, on the roof, on the seat etc
      But as mentioned earlier....there are exceptions. English is a much harder language to learn (apart from verb conjugations...lol) as there are no rules...unlike Spanish.
      My favourite example......tomb, bomb, comb are pronounced differently even though the only difference is the first letter . Very bizarre !
      Your English is fantastic anyway...as is your personality. You are doing a fantastic job and you make it so much easier for a 68 year-old like me who finds it difficult to learn new things....or as we say in England.....it's difficult to teach an old dog new tricks.

    • @spanishafterhours
      @spanishafterhours  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Nice!! I see! Because I usually just translate on/in to 'en', but with sobre and dentro I guess it's kind of easier to understand! Thanks for your kind words!! "On the beach" is the correct choice, but it is a weird phrase in English (why must English have so many exceptions to its rules 😭). It is unusual because usually, a person's location within a generic/unspecific area is "in" or "at". In fact, "at the beach" is used more often than "on the beach".

    The correct is: I will be AT the beach!
    you want to think of how you are relating to the place both physically and hierarchically to understand English ..
    - you are AT something, meaning you are in an activity of some sort AT some place, like I am AT the cinema, AT the world cup, AT school... something is going on there , so you are at it!
    - like he is AT baseball training but he is now IN the locker-room, and he is trained BY the national team coach IN person, and he is ON the way to getting really big IN the baseball world considering where he is AT IN his present level, At least IN our country.....
    just cursing BY here tonight sharing some prepositions AT your TH-cam-channel IN the comments and hope that is OK BY you that I do so!

    He is on the beach sitting in the sand. Creo que en este caso, “la playa”, como ejemplo, es la excepción donde decimos, “on”, en vez de, “in”. Por ejemplo si un hombre fue a las montañas, diríamos que, “he is in the mountains”. No decimos, “on”, como en el caso de la playa. Pero si estamos hablando de la arena específicamente, pues, entonces, “in”. Por ejemplo, el hombre está sentado, “in”, la arena.

    You would never really use “in the beach”. If someone is there as in physical location, you would say Maria is at the beach. Use in when someone /something is inside something. Maria is in her house. She is literally inside her house. You can use in for non specific dates and seasons, like “In March it rained”. But specific dates, you would use on. “Let’s meet up on Friday”. “He was born on January first”. The only way “in the beach” would ever be correct was if he was inside the beach somehow, like literally buried into the sand. If you use in by mistake everyone will know what you are saying, but it is not correct.

    I've only been learning español for four days and it makes me grateful to have found your channel early on! Thank you for doing your best to make language learning fun. I'm Filipino, apparently, we're supposed to learn español fast, but I have my doubts haha. Wish me luck!

      I don't think romance languages use the " 's " thingy (whatever it's called. Lo siente, no recordo). Instead the word "de" is used which literally means "of"
      Por ejemplo : "La camiseta de mi hermana"
      O "La casa de papel" etc
      Edit : Correct me if I'm wrong. Gracias amigos
