Honestly, this is almost exactly how I learned English... Only there was no Internet back then, no smartphones, no Google Translate. So I did it offline. With a dictionary. Started translating songs - guessing the spelling from hearing, then started watching movies - pausing after every sentence and translating in the same manner. It'd take me up to 3 days to watch a single picture. But now, 20 years later, I still remember almost every quote from my favourite ones! Winning all trivia drinking contests since 1999. Also, there was a time when movies were available online but without captions and guess who was very good at making those. One of my better jobs - was literally paid to watch blockbusters pre-release.
I also learned English like this, but I may be a bit younger so after I discovered 9gag it became my main source of learning. For me the biggest barrier was consuming a lot of content at once and memes definitely helped me through the hurdles

Or to describe it. It's an animal that sometimes lives in a house. Has a tail. Makes a noise. Etc. Do not get stuck, thinking of what is that word. Find another way to say it. Because it will take 10 years to know every word in a foreign language. You need to be able to function with a limited active vocabulary for now.
in my teaching, i use cards. 1 word on 1 card. 2 students work together. one takes a card and tries to explain the word on the card without using the word or parts of the word until the partner guesses the word. it s a 4 in 1 learning: 1. they repeat vocabulary. 2. they train speaking. 3. they train listening. 4. they train grammar😊

I play video games in French because it forces me to understand in order to play the game. If I'm confused or don't understand something I can talk to a character again or look at the pause menu to see my objectives. I think it's a really good way of learning. I tend to watch movies in full, but maybe I will try watching just a single scene after watching this video.
@@sympathic21 For games with French voice acting I play the Resident Evil (from Revelations onwards), Tomb Raider (The reboots) and a Plague Tale. For just the text, most games can be played in french as you just switch your console to the French language. For newer learners, the Pokémon games are easier to get into before going for more complicated games.

I did 4 years of high School German. I was amazed to find the language Educational films we used (black and White made in the late 1950's) still available on the youTube. The series is called "Guten Tag." If you know some German you will quickly get bored of it but if you are a beginner they are excellent. The episodes are about 15 mins long. Never thought I'd use it again but ended up getting a job in Germany in a German speaking only workplace (they were very patient!) Learning another language opens so many doors.

I think that we shouldn't undervalue watching basic children's shows. If you can find a dub in your target language, it offers you a free pass to re-experience a piece of your childhood with fresh eyes. It especially helps if you pick a show where the characters talk directly to the audience a lot. For instance, Pistas de Blue, the spanish dub of Blue's Clues. Or, on Disney+ I started watching Bear in the Big Blue House when I go to bed, which has been fun and relaxing. Love your channel btw, your comprehensible input videos are great. note: the only problem with dubs is you won't pic up on mouth movements or they could be distracting, but that's not really an issue with a puppet show like Bear in the Big Blue House
Agreed, my kids love blippi and sometimes I watch it in Spanish with them. It's great because it has basic words you don't find often in things made for adults.
I love how you let your Spanish accent shine through. Some online language coaches and teachers suppress their native accent actively, causing them to sound strange even though they're proficient in English. It's so much more natural sounding when your native accent is still there with the what a person has acquired of the target language accent.
I'm studying Russian, and I watched a video of a Russian-speaking Brazilian woman, who kept her native accent...it was the most beautiful thing I've ever heard...like liquid gold dripping from her tongue.
When I started learning Spanish I was lost.....but then I saw your videos again and again so many times that even during work my brain used to throw the words you used in your videos and also writing a diary everyday also helped me learn it much more faster
I learned a lot by watching films I already knew most of the words to with Spanish audio and Spanish subtitles on netflix. Phrases / sentences start sticking in my head from the film and I make the connection automatically.
Before officially studying Korean, I learned so many words just from watching Korean movies without even trying! I would tell them to my Korean customers and they were always surprised!

I agree. Next to living in the country of the target language, this is the best way (after achieving some proficiency). I would also recommend audiobooks--not only by repeatedly listening to the book chapter by chapter, but by, yes, copying the text by hand, word for word, which I continue to do till this day. But once you achieve advanced mastery, this copy-writing is no longer necessary; just listening should suffice. Frequency dictionaries are also useful. I have one all-time favorite book that I've copied, word for word, in three different languages. Language acquisition is just a life-time effort. Like staying in shape. Y, a propósito, sos muy linda.

I've been watching Spanish language movies on Netflix to try to improve my comprehension skills (Spanish language movies tend to be dreadfully cheesy, but that's neither here nor there...) and the trick I hit on was to change the speed to .75 of the normal speed. It's barely noticeable in terms of enjoying the movie, but it makes a HUGE difference in terms of being able to understand what is being said. Of course, they speak proper Spanish in movies (albeit it's usually South American Spanish, with all those ustedes and carros...), whereas I live in Granada, where they speak their own version of Spanish, which seems to be based on the principle that consonants - like car indicators - are superfluous and must never be used.

I've also watched at least 100 kdramas and the only words ive picked up are the ones really picked up in context. Also, I've listened, almost exclusively, to Latin, Spanish, & Brazilian music for over 30 years and speak no Spanish. I do occasionally freak out when i can understand a complete phrase or sentence. I'll usually run and run it thru google translate to see if it actually meant what i thought and an occasionally surprised. I do really love your teaching style and believe your approach is best.
I learned English through movies. I stopped doing my school vocab exercises in 7th grade. I had consistent B to A grades until I graduated and speak almost without accent.
Laura - I wanted to tell you about something that happened to me yesterday: I was at the pharmacy and the lady in the line next to me was speaking Spanish, and ... I suddenly realized I could understand what she was saying! This is in no small part because of watching your videos!
I find watching youtube videos in other languages to be more helpful than movies personally. Movies are more cinematic with their music and sound effects and that can get in the way of me understanding the words. A lot of times though theres less of that in youtube videos.

TH-cam videos are also usually the perfect size, movies can get too long and having to try to follow the plot in a foreign language can get exhausting.
While I 100% agree, movies with their narratives (especially if already watched in your NL) are often much easier to understand. I find that right now in Japanese I can understand most animes and movies without too much problem (will miss some specifics but will be able to follow what's happening) but then will have to put my 100% concentration to follow a YT video. As a result, anime relaxes me and TH-cam tires me.
I was obsessed with K-Dramas during the pandemic. I literally had nothing to do so I would watch them like 8-12 hours a day for like a year and half straight. The thing is I hate subtitles so I didn’t watch with English subs. Weirdly after a while I started to understand. And I recently went to Korea and was surprised that I was talking a little and understanding people! It’s not like I was super good or anything, but it was something.
Although I was always more of a Seinfeld guy myself, many friends of mine who learned English as a second language improved their English from binging Friends. Anyways, I could see how breaking down your input into smaller segments can make it easier to analyze and retain. Great advice.

the watching a scene part is honestly amazing and it reminded me of how i got fluent in english and it was by watching compilations of vines (something that existed before musicaly and tiktok) and by learning random things it made everything else so easy plus watching edits of shows various times until i understood it.

this is not only a good way to learn Korean, but to make each K-Drama episode last 100 sessions instead of just 1! so if you're a non-native Korean who's emotionally invested in a K-Drama, that's fantastic news! that show will last you months/years, instead of just days of binge watching!
I think it's a great method to learn and I use it extensively. But, personally, it helped doing plenty of grammar on the side. It helped me pick it up quicker.
Yes, plus...I liked the tip from Italian made easy. He said watch QVC from other countries. They have to speak in a tone so everyone understands etc... it helped!!!
The best way to actually learn something from movies or shows is to do it later. Let me explain basically I’m learning the general grammar and knowing how to form them then you go ahead with movies. Because what the movie does is improve your language because the way the people talk with conversations you naturally pick up but as a starter up it’s like listening to gibberish. 😊

Thanks! I like the idea of also describing the scene in addition to translating the dialogue. I just started doing this with To The Lake to learn Russian. I put the audio and subtitles in Russian and translate a couple scenes. The words are spoken so quickly 😅 but it’ll help me learn how the words get smushed together in real speech.

I tried to watch SpongeBob SquarePants in Spanish thinking it would be easy as it’s aimed at children. It was some of the hardest Spanish I’ve come across! I had no idea what most of the expressions and vocabulary meant. Pocoyó is thankfully much more straightforward.

I learned English watching tv, American movies and sitcoms, they were titled/translated below in my language… I hear what it being said, i read what it means right away… I never took a single class of spelling, writing and talking because i was just a kid and learned different language in my school… I was young then so it was easy to remember it fast… My understanding of English is logically much better than my spelling or speaking, but i was very young at the time so it was much easier to learn…

I also look at the subtitle and hear they speak to pinpoint the swedish word, its not 100% accurate all the time but thats how i learned english. I also appreciate this english video, tysm!
Because translations are not always literal, but about conveying the same meaning. That is why you only should use translation for meaning, not for sentence structure etc.
It's more about the visual message that the movie transmits to the audience which will make the language compriencible with just a movement u can explain everything but if you had language to accentuate the movement the audience will get it and understand it.
@@spanishafterhours Laura, the ironic thing is I know very little Korean from watching K-Dramas and listening to K-pop but I also didn't know the word, so I went to an online Korean dictionary and looked up the word and the pronunciation.
i was taking arabic in uni and i was doing a final on it. we needed to write '2 weeks' in a sentence but i forgot how to say it so i wrote '14 days' (which is a lot harder gramatically lol). the teacher gave me the point but also said she will not be doing that in the future hahah
Yeah I watch a lot of Netflix shows in Spanish and I really like K-Dramas, so I'm starting to learn that. I'm also starting to learn Portuguese through worship singers. If I watch a cartoon then it's a cartoon that I enjoy and already know. I do have Lingo Pie.

I play video games in French because it forces me to understand in order to play the game. If I'm confused or don't understand something I can talk to a character again or look at the pause menu to see my objectives. I think it's a really good way of learning.
I tend to watch movies in full, but maybe I will try watching just a single scene after watching this video.

@@sympathic21 For games with French voice acting I play the Resident Evil (from Revelations onwards), Tomb Raider (The reboots) and a Plague Tale.
For just the text, most games can be played in french as you just switch your console to the French language. For newer learners, the Pokémon games are easier to get into before going for more complicated games.

I did 4 years of high School German. I was amazed to find the language Educational films we used (black and White made in the late 1950's) still available on the youTube. The series is called "Guten Tag." If you know some German you will quickly get bored of it but if you are a beginner they are excellent. The episodes are about 15 mins long. Never thought I'd use it again but ended up getting a job in Germany in a German speaking only workplace (they were very patient!) Learning another language opens so many doors.

I think that we shouldn't undervalue watching basic children's shows. If you can find a dub in your target language, it offers you a free pass to re-experience a piece of your childhood with fresh eyes. It especially helps if you pick a show where the characters talk directly to the audience a lot. For instance, Pistas de Blue, the spanish dub of Blue's Clues. Or, on Disney+ I started watching Bear in the Big Blue House when I go to bed, which has been fun and relaxing. Love your channel btw, your comprehensible input videos are great.
note: the only problem with dubs is you won't pic up on mouth movements or they could be distracting, but that's not really an issue with a puppet show like Bear in the Big Blue House
Agreed, my kids love blippi and sometimes I watch it in Spanish with them. It's great because it has basic words you don't find often in things made for adults.

I love how you let your Spanish accent shine through. Some online language coaches and teachers suppress their native accent actively, causing them to sound strange even though they're proficient in English. It's so much more natural sounding when your native accent is still there with the what a person has acquired of the target language accent.
I'm studying Russian, and I watched a video of a Russian-speaking Brazilian woman, who kept her native accent...it was the most beautiful thing I've ever heard...like liquid gold dripping from her tongue.

When I started learning Spanish I was lost.....but then I saw your videos again and again so many times that even during work my brain used to throw the words you used in your videos and also writing a diary everyday also helped me learn it much more faster
I learned a lot by watching films I already knew most of the words to with Spanish audio and Spanish subtitles on netflix. Phrases / sentences start sticking in my head from the film and I make the connection automatically.

I agree. Next to living in the country of the target language, this is the best way (after achieving some proficiency). I would also recommend audiobooks--not only by repeatedly listening to the book chapter by chapter, but by, yes, copying the text by hand, word for word, which I continue to do till this day. But once you achieve advanced mastery, this copy-writing is no longer necessary; just listening should suffice. Frequency dictionaries are also useful. I have one all-time favorite book that I've copied, word for word, in three different languages. Language acquisition is just a life-time effort. Like staying in shape. Y, a propósito, sos muy linda.

I've been watching Spanish language movies on Netflix to try to improve my comprehension skills (Spanish language movies tend to be dreadfully cheesy, but that's neither here nor there...) and the trick I hit on was to change the speed to .75 of the normal speed. It's barely noticeable in terms of enjoying the movie, but it makes a HUGE difference in terms of being able to understand what is being said. Of course, they speak proper Spanish in movies (albeit it's usually South American Spanish, with all those ustedes and carros...), whereas I live in Granada, where they speak their own version of Spanish, which seems to be based on the principle that consonants - like car indicators - are superfluous and must never be used.

I've also watched at least 100 kdramas and the only words ive picked up are the ones really picked up in context.
Also, I've listened, almost exclusively, to Latin, Spanish, & Brazilian music for over 30 years and speak no Spanish. I do occasionally freak out when i can understand a complete phrase or sentence. I'll usually run and run it thru google translate to see if it actually meant what i thought and an occasionally surprised.

Another good way to learn a foreign language is to watch reels on social media in the target language with subtitles in that language.
Laura - I wanted to tell you about something that happened to me yesterday: I was at the pharmacy and the lady in the line next to me was speaking Spanish, and ... I suddenly realized I could understand what she was saying! This is in no small part because of watching your videos!
I think this is why remember Spainish cuss words, since your video isolated specific use cases of each cuss word. Tu eres la hostia!
TH-cam shorts with subtitles is great for this.
I find watching youtube videos in other languages to be more helpful than movies personally. Movies are more cinematic with their music and sound effects and that can get in the way of me understanding the words. A lot of times though theres less of that in youtube videos.

TH-cam videos are also usually the perfect size, movies can get too long and having to try to follow the plot in a foreign language can get exhausting.
While I 100% agree, movies with their narratives (especially if already watched in your NL) are often much easier to understand. I find that right now in Japanese I can understand most animes and movies without too much problem (will miss some specifics but will be able to follow what's happening) but then will have to put my 100% concentration to follow a YT video. As a result, anime relaxes me and TH-cam tires me.

I was obsessed with K-Dramas during the pandemic. I literally had nothing to do so I would watch them like 8-12 hours a day for like a year and half straight. The thing is I hate subtitles so I didn’t watch with English subs. Weirdly after a while I started to understand. And I recently went to Korea and was surprised that I was talking a little and understanding people! It’s not like I was super good or anything, but it was something.
How much did you understand?
Although I was always more of a Seinfeld guy myself, many friends of mine who learned English as a second language improved their English from binging Friends. Anyways, I could see how breaking down your input into smaller segments can make it easier to analyze and retain. Great advice.

the watching a scene part is honestly amazing and it reminded me of how i got fluent in english and it was by watching compilations of vines (something that existed before musicaly and tiktok) and by learning random things it made everything else so easy plus watching edits of shows various times until i understood it.

this is not only a good way to learn Korean, but to make each K-Drama episode last 100 sessions instead of just 1! so if you're a non-native Korean who's emotionally invested in a K-Drama, that's fantastic news! that show will last you months/years, instead of just days of binge watching!
I think it's a great method to learn and I use it extensively. But, personally, it helped doing plenty of grammar on the side. It helped me pick it up quicker.

The best way to actually learn something from movies or shows is to do it later. Let me explain basically I’m learning the general grammar and knowing how to form them then you go ahead with movies. Because what the movie does is improve your language because the way the people talk with conversations you naturally pick up but as a starter up it’s like listening to gibberish. 😊

Thanks! I like the idea of also describing the scene in addition to translating the dialogue. I just started doing this with To The Lake to learn Russian. I put the audio and subtitles in Russian and translate a couple scenes. The words are spoken so quickly 😅 but it’ll help me learn how the words get smushed together in real speech.

Thank you Laura I agree with everything you've said except for this part of "analyzing" because as you know when using comprehensible input all we want to do is to learn the language subconsciously and by "analyzing" tht will turn into learning consciousply
In my opinion as a language leaner you need to be a bit patient at the beginning and watch some boring kids shows as I did learning Spanish and English, I've watched Peppa pig , callo ,bluey , Pocoyó and others and after watching for a sufficient time I'm now able to understand movies and tv shows for natives more than the natives themselves 😊

I tried to watch SpongeBob SquarePants in Spanish thinking it would be easy as it’s aimed at children. It was some of the hardest Spanish I’ve come across! I had no idea what most of the expressions and vocabulary meant. Pocoyó is thankfully much more straightforward.

I never took a single class of spelling, writing and talking because i was just a kid and learned different language in my school…
I was young then so it was easy to remember it fast… My understanding of English is logically much better than my spelling or speaking, but i was very young at the time so it was much easier to learn…

i recently started to watch la casa de papel again with swedish sub. im pausing every now and again cause i might hear a word they havent said yet and at that time i just pull up google translate and translate it. I also look at the subtitle and hear they speak to pinpoint the swedish word, its not 100% accurate all the time but thats how i learned english. I also appreciate this english video, tysm!

Because "i'll talk to you tomorrow" and "we'll talk tomorrow" mean the exact same thing, and mañana implies future context.

Because translations are not always literal, but about conveying the same meaning. That is why you only should use translation for meaning, not for sentence structure etc.
It's more about the visual message that the movie transmits to the audience which will make the language compriencible with just a movement u can explain everything but if you had language to accentuate the movement the audience will get it and understand it.

Yeah I watch a lot of Netflix shows in Spanish and I really like K-Dramas, so I'm starting to learn that. I'm also starting to learn Portuguese through worship singers. If I watch a cartoon then it's a cartoon that I enjoy and already know. I do have Lingo Pie.
