Looking better everyday! Who knew you could glue a bus together 😊
You’re giving all of us average car guys hope. Enjoy your videos. Thanks
That is the purpose of this channel! You're welcome :)
glad to see you finally got that booger nose on. cheers
One step closer to being behind the wheel!
Just bought our 1st bus today as a father son learning experience that looks like it’s in about the same shape as yours was, though we got it for a grand so not a lot to loose I still kind of got the heaves that were not going to be able to pull this off, but these videos give me hope!
I did a collision repair nose job on one of these busses years ago. If i remember correctly there were some brackets on the inside i had to transfer from the old panel to the new. using Panelbond is fine. Allot of people don't like it, i think it's your decision to make. Once again i'am amazed with your skill level, u also really have everything very well researched.
Thank you! I enjoy learning new things and doing a lot of research is always a part of that. Only one way to find out if it will work and that’s by doing it 😅
@@Vangabonders some welding 🤣👍
I worked for the company that made your panel bond and all I can say is hope you're not sorry down the road . I never use any of their products . Great work but keep it like it was done originally. Was welded for a reason . Thanks for the video .
Only one way to find out if it will last lol
Bro have a sit 😍
A drink and enjoy his art 😊
Which sometimes I do hehe
Just enjoyed another VW restore video
Thanks again for sharing. Catch in the next one.
More to come!
Looks great, nice gaps too. My first car was a 73 Bus. Brings back memories.
I envy you for your ability to restore your bus yourself. I have an old Beetle but unfortunately I have to get it done up by someone else. Watching these videos is only making me more anxious for the day my Beetle is finally due for it's restoration as there's a queue and I'll have to wait at least another year.
Thankfully though I can drive and enjoy it in the meanwhile but I'll probably shed a tear or two when it's finally done.
Can't get enough of these restauration videos, keep up the good work
Glad you enjoy the series! You're lucky you get to enjoy your ride in the meantime
Fantastical video! PBR is essential for all life’s commitments!
Ain’t that the truth!
An algorithm is a procedure used for solving a problem or performing a computation. Algorithms act as an exact list of instructions that conduct specified actions step by step in either hardware- or software-based routines. 💝 Love the nose job, this bus is coming along fast.
I'm giving it my all, everyday :)
Loving the use of panel bond !!! Why not, it's how modern cars are built
True
At the rate you two are refurbishing this bus, it will be better than new when you two are finished with it... NICE....
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
That VW nose job is looking great!!
Good Stuff Brother it looks super❤
#checkyourfit great job guys!
Looking 👀 cool 😎 with its face back on 😊🏴
Panel bond is perfect for the nose. Amazing work!
I would add few holes and pass tiny bolts in addition to the bond. I would need too many clips!
Great work. Well done. Kind regards from Germany.
Thank you! Cheers!
I think the panel bond is the perfect way to install this panel, I am currently sorting the messy underside of a 2008 Mercedes and every spot weld is a rust spot from which the rust grows outward.
More great work 👍🏻
Thanks 👍
Super JOB !
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice work, NOTHING wrong with 3M "Panel Bond", many new cars ( and air planes) are glued together, i did that 20 years ago already, keep going.... ; )
I think it's great stuff but some purist hate it
#PanelBond ooo o sexy Panel Bond.. hahah lol good stuff bro.. Im working on my T2 1971..
what a big work on a T2B.
But a nice job
Pabst! Nice
I support your choice for panel bond! Keep on keepn on man!
Thanks for the encouragement!
I think in areas notorious for water ingress panel bond is the perfect choice ✅
I used panel bond on my restoration and I think it worked fine. Can't use it everywhere, and in places I could, I used steel rivets that I ground the heads off after it cured. I also put masking tape on the clamp surface to make sure it didn't accidently adhere to the part.
Amazing progress on
Thank you! I'm working at it every day!
I am from Morocco and I love old cars and I own a T3
The T3 is an awesome ride!
As long as the two parts fit perfectly, panel bond works fine. The Porsche GT3 rear quarter panel is bonded and riveted in. Even the inner wheel arch is bonded and riveted
Most modern cars are assembled this way now days.
They key is panel bond and riveted. Panel bond alone does not have the structural integrity. I think you should have welded or riveted the corners and possibly a few spot welds along with the pedal bond. IMO. Volkswagen buses are not exactly known for their safety So the more structural integrity, the better.😂
Great content. i love those videos where people try to preserve old cars, but my question is Why not welding, or do you weld in a later stadium. Spotwelding is so much stronger then only panelbond. The front of your car should be structial very strong in case of an Hit with another car or what else. I alwas say...savtye first.Beautifull VW bus. You can have years and years of fun and joy with it. Greetings from the Netherlands.
#checkyourfit.. looking good !
G’day and greetings from Tasmania Australia I reckon you are doing a good job it’s not easy and it takes time, panel bond is fine and the epoxy primer is great. I’ve only recently been watching your channel and I have subscribed take care regards John
Nice work! That looks great, I"m looking forward to Part 2. #checkyourfit #feedthealgorithm
Should be up today :)
Looks Great !!
Thank you! It’s nice to see the bus with a nose again. I feel like her personality is coming back
Respect 👍👍
I think they way you did a combo of weld and bond works well. Smart to do it across the windscreen where water can get in between weld. I think I’ll do the same. Would have like more tips and traps and lining it up though!
Wish I'd seen this vid a few years ago, I'm veeeeery slowly doing the same to my '78, and watching your vids on this, I think I'm going to have to maybe take it off and redo it properly :)
Great video chap, you probably could have done with a classic mini door skin/panel edge folding tool for the nose panel edges. Looking forward to your next episode 👍
I didn't even know such a tool existed haha
Muy buen trabajo
Va a quedar de lujo esa Combi, saludos desde México Cdmx
Yo tengo 2 Combis y las amo, son excelentes vehículos
Looks awesome! #checkyourfit I wouldn’t worry about the panel bond haters…it’s your bus and it’s pretty much standard practices now. Plus you’re welding it in certain areas any way. That thing ain’t goin anywhere
That's what I'm thinking!
tanks for sharing...good stuff
Thank you!
I would like to say one suggestion! You don't need to removed the black ink on the new pieces because this painting it just to protect all metal, when you applied quimical remove you exposed the base material for initial corrosion "micro corrosion" ok ! 🇧🇷🇺🇸
Take that panel bond haters.
Tell em!
You're right, a lot of the welding (bad welding I might add) is completely unnecessary and it also doesn't prevent rust from occurring at the spot weld points again in the future. Not only is the panel bonding adhesive extremely strong it also acts as a sealant between the parts, preventing future moisture infiltration and resulting rust issues all over again. The engineers used what was available at the time, if they had panel bonding adhesives they surely would have used them.
I know most new cars are "glued" and not welded. I am sure the panel bond will work fine...but still curious to see how it holds up 😀. Thanks for the video!!
I will make sure to give you all the 20 year update lol
Panel adhesives these days are stronger than welds I love the 3m 8115
How will we ever know ??
check back in 20 years@@philtucker1224
Epoxy primer will absolutely adhere to bare metal without etching, but, a scotchbrite or light grit sandpaper doesn’t hurt for a clean surface.
Glue is 👍🏾
Mind your back....get your lovely helper to help more 😁
#checkyourfit fits looking mint!
Sweet
No worries on the panel bond. Mercedes does it so you can too.
Clichéd phrase, but you're literally an inspiration to me. I've been working on my 73' westy way more since finding your channel! Quick question, bc im actually looking to remove my nose today after some liquid courage...I've a dewalt angle grinder, will that work? And what disc would you use if so?
I got mine cut off with an angle grinder and a 4 1/2” cut off wheel. Just make sure you cut in the correct areas. The episode where I removed the nose goes more into detail of where I cut it. Good luck! Glad I could help get you going 😃
you did an amazing job on this repair and i think that panel bond is a perfectly fine and in some cases, better to use then welding. regardless, i cant wait to see further work on the bus in the nose area like, will you be installing ac? or will you be keeping it air cooled like it originally was?
I plan on doing a/c with the Subaru swap for sure!
I should probably get some panel bond instead of trying to spot weld everything. :/ Also, the cat watching you from the glass door was a highlight.
Join the panel bond darkside.. I'm glad someone noticed the kitty at the door, I was cracking up when editing lol

I don't use glue on any structural component. It also says it right there on the instructions, Im sure. It's fine for a rocker or maybe even a battery box though.
I don't know that I would consider the nose skin structural. Rockers are technically structural though, at least the inner and middle one
@@Vangabonders It's structural in that it is what is between you and the front bumper of the dude in the F150 in your lane because he is texting. I get that it isn't structural in the sense that it isn't the subframe and the load of the vehicle (probably) isn't reduced. I get that, as it is a box with a subframe rather than a body on frame, arguably the entire box is "structural" and the same is true for rockers using that logic.
awesome video ,
do you have or have you seen the restoration manual produced by Mark Paxton, its pretty helpful for tackling the specific areas of repairs of the bus body and also references alan schofield panels / supply. just found it, can't believe i was missing it!
I have not seen it. I’ve used the Haynes Restoration Manual by Fletcher Gillet
great job, what is the measurement you take in the middle of the windshield?
#checkyourfit
Unfortunately the fronts are no longer made by VW in the thicker quality steel.
The first one I replaced I didn't take that black primer off and although painted inside condensation rotted from inside out.
I'm in the process of replacing again this time the panel is shot blasted and hot zinc sprayed ready to be re welded 👍
I think the way that I’ve done it should prevent it from rusting from the inside out since epoxy primer completely seals the metal from oxygen. The original primer these come in is complete garbage
What did you use to cut the front off? Currently trying to remove the front of mine
i wish i have the skill to make this for my 1970 bay
I wish you tube would put in a 2 thumbs up some videos like this one a 1 thumbs up doent do it justice
haha I appreciate that
super boulot , quelle est la mesure que vous prenez au milieu du pare brise ?
Igp Brasil
Sorry, I should've preface all that with the fact that I've literally never cut metal with anything but a hacksaw before and I've obvs never cut the bus.
HI!. Can you tell me if the front of the Bus where the bumper attaches to with bolts is hollow, or is there something inside of that area. The part that the bumper attaches to- just crush space?. I want to make additional holes to hold the bumper on since 2 of the holes on my Bus are stripped. Thanks.
It is indeed hollow. It's called the deformation panel
I used the bond and welded to to make sure there was no chance on my project come apart
Is that bus going to be painted the original orange color that sure will make it look awesome instead of the usual palet colors like red, light blue etc.
I am going with the original L20B brilliant orange! I love the stock color for the 73s
@@Vangabonders If I am not mistaken did the bus also have a part like the roof and part of the front end in white ?.
@@enriquelopez9124 The 73 westfalia was brilliant orange and then the bumpers and fiberglass pop top were white
Use COOPERS STRIPPER from NZ - the so-called aircraft stripper is junk compared to it. COOPERS deliver worldwide. CHEERS from AUSTRALIA
Check your fit before you commit! 😉
❤
😎👍
That black "paint" you removed was actually CDC (cathodic dip coating) That is the very best surface protection system and it is widely used in the car industry. Do not remove! Just lightly pad it and prime before painting...
I have an entire episode about CDC or EDP primer. I’m not a fan of it and I’m pretty sure that these replacement panels for the Vdubs especially the klokkerholm ones aren’t actual EDP primer

and.... #checkyourfit.... ;-)
I started a new job after a few weeks I was putting a weld on front wing on a car I went to the stores to get the weld through spot weld sealer but there was none left I said just give me a tube of Sikaflex , I was just putting a bead on the edge when the boss walked past he started shouting at me for ruining the job , luckily a lad who had been there a long time came across told him you can spotweld through Sikaflex the boss just walked away .
Panel Bond! Noooooooo......!!!! Jaaa jk dude. What ever works for you.
Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned
from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the
Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas
station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station fuel
pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in
the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems,
turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and
New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be
done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of
crime here, called emissions and smoke crime :-(
You're obviously misinformed about adhesives, they break down over time.Nice little fender bender, the bond will break off immediately ,and a Hyundai Elantra will gut one like a fish, it's why planes are not only glued together, but also riveted and bolted with flush threaded fasteners for insurance. My guess is, the bus is just a prop to make a video for TH-cam cash, being lazy by not welding is no big deal.
If you watch the second part of this video you will see that it is also welded on. This is not a prop it’s a restoration that I plan on using. Thanks for your concern
