I started soloing back in the early 80's. I play RPGs with friends, but D&D I never had a group, (we played Champions) and left with soloing it. Recently, my board game group was playing dungeon crawl board games and they bored me. I introduced D&D and DMed it, after not playing RPGs for 30 years. My group had more fun with it, but not really regular role-players gamers. As I'm looking for a group, I thought I would practice Barrow maze, sense it's a mega dungeon and DMing it would be better if I had ran it first. So I went with what I did as a kid. I rolled up 7 PCs, using Old School Essentials, I include retainers (something I did not do as kid) set up a stable that grew close to 20 PC's as the 7 slots needed filling so rolling up more PC's became common at first, as the first PCs leveled up, healed, went on business roles, one was turned to stone in the dungeon for about half a month.
Then I started seeing a RPG solo culture. I really like watch them to get idea for what I do, I have yet to see. Instead of a Emulator and not PCing it, (they have military style triggers while being archeologists with the 7th PC are in charge of a rear guard of retainers). While DMing it, I know what is going to happen, I roll on their INT and/or WIS as to what they are aware of what they are not aware of and what triggers from the combination and story line taking place in this dungeon dive. I also try to challenge the party with creating ideas of how encounters work with the morale rolls along the story line. I see this as great DMing practice of overloading myself soloing and how under loaded I am while DMing a group to give the darkness description senses it's proper flavor.
Now when I run Barrow maze, I already have something to make my 1st group have a better experience as well as what my experience brings to the table. I would also be using Shadowdark as my main core rules, instead of O.S.E. which helps my style of soloing to group playing that will result in faster playing. Cheers.
