this show is a prime example of why 'diversity' really can be a massive detriment to a fantasy series
any race, from any nation, can be any color with any facial features and any accent
i would ask if anyone can make heads or tails of this world, if they understand fuckall about any of the characters or their motivations unless explicitly told, or if they can keep track of who belongs to what faction or why anyone is doing anything
it's fine to make different cultures or different nations a wide variety of skin tones, but for the love of god at least attempt some sort of consistency with it

Netflix took the Witcher, where is was:
    - rooted in slavic mythology
    - a grounded take on fantasy
    - griddy and morally ambiguous
    - a reflection of Eastern Europe
Took away all of those things and inserted:
    - modern politics
    - generic, bland fantasy world
    - diversity that dilutes any resemblance of slavic culture or lore
    - caters to young women
    - adds men kissing
Shocker that Henry Cavill left and the show is failing.

I'd like to know more about the reflection on eastern Europe part... I must definitely read the books. Not surprised they ignored and sidelined any reference to the culture and traditions the Witcher is inspired from. Hollywood and these streaming sites are ignorant and racist af and only use the dumbed down versions of SOME cultures in order to push an agenda or sell more. At they same time, they try to take something anyway if they think they can make a few dollara, just ignoring the cultural aspects if it's from a "not politically cool" tradition (like with Tolkien).
But anyway, they prob wanted to cater to a specific demographic of mainly a certain group of girls (shippers) cause most franchises and cult fandoms have a huge shippers fan base and they think these girls are dumb and will enjoy any trash... But shippers (who are not automatically fans of any series with men kissing) tend to look for good characters and strong bonds between characters. They'll never have shippers or a fanbase without good characters. Usually fandoms loved by young women and shippers are actually those with the best characterization.

  • @Krawurxus

That Tavern scene is terrible and unrealistic on so many levels it's actually hard to disentangle.
First, I can't even describe what would happen to some diverse female musical performer who assaults a patron with deadly weapons in a full tavern in medieval Poland regardless of cause without getting banned on TH-cam.
And anyways, if that guy's a local he knows EVERYONE there. Everyone will care about him a lot more than about some singer. Her assaulting him would direct everyones anger at her and away from him.
If he's a stranger he has to assume everyone else knows each other. Either way he wouldn't start groping and hitting the barmaids in a full tavern where everyone can see.
This short interaction shows that the writers basically live on social media and know nothing else. They can't even fathom the kind of social cohesion and structure you'd find in a medieval town. Everyone KNOWS each other there, basically from birth. Strangers are distrusted heavily because if they're up to stuff it's easy for them to just dip. If a stranger is caught committing a crime or violating social norms you bet they aren't in for a good time. With that barmaid you can bet there's at least a father or husband who'd be out for blood, if only because ignoring it would ruin his reputation within that town he's lived in his entire life.
See how this whole inequality business and basically being property still served to keep women safe from stuff like this happening by making sure they always had a dedicated protector?

    • @scratchy996
      @scratchy996 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I bet those hipster writers have never been in a rural bar fight. Or a fight of any kind in their entire life.
Even if you hate the guts of someone from your village, if that person gets attacked by a stranger, you f*ck that stranger up. That's true in Poland, in the US, everywhere.
"Modern writers" think that every place is like Newy York, where people don't even know or care about their neighbors.

    • @Krawurxus
      @Krawurxus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

@@scratchy996 I've never been in a bar fight either. In fact the only fight I've been in was one schoolyard fight in 5th grade.
You don't have to have been in wars to understand how human communities and bonds of comraderie work.
But with these social media-based script writers they've been virtue signalling in their little echo chamber for so many years that they can't even fathom siding with a friend, comrade in arms or even just someone from the same village regardless of what they've done or what political views they hold.
All their "friends" are based on political alignment instead of being unconditional allies. That's why sooner or later, the Woke will always attack each other over minor differences in doctrine like what happened with JK Rowling.

Well, love is usually a strong motivator in general.
But in this case it's rather weird.
They turned a cunning manipulator into a sensitive, love-stricken man.

My only complaint with it was the fact that in the middle of the show the plot started to focus exclusively on Counterespionage in the Castle and then they never got away from it at all. First it was Morgana, then it was what's-his-name. Even in the last season, there was a spy in the castle.
Hilariously that spy was played by probably my least favorite character in Gotham, aside from their version of Commissioner Gordon himself and Penguin.

Let me tell you, at first, when I found out about the BO, I absolutely unironically thought that this was a low-budget bootleg series. I looked at a poster, I looked at the rating and thought ''there's no way this is serious''. I'm baffled that I was wrong.

I'm someone who actually likes diversity in media, and when I say diversity, I don't mean "diversity".
    Blood origin has "diversity".
I watched this entire shit show, and I can't tell you a single thing about ANY of the characters except for what diversity checkbox they're meant to fill, not even their names.
They aren't characters, they're bland, walking diversity checkboxes with lousy writing and lousy worldbuilding.
Actual diversity is more than just having people with lots of skin colors, different body type, different sexualities.. it's about having different types of characters.
Characters from different places who view the world differently, who have different experiences and can share their viewpoints with each other, who can challenge what they each believe and lead to growth.

Funny thing about the The Witcher Series season one: When I first read about the show and saw pics of Episode one I thought 'Hey cool, they stay true to the book (which I read). Renfri is this blonde a little androgynous woman and Geralt meets her henchmen/friends. These were the pictures I saw in the net. Then I saw the episode and I was like 'wait a minute. This is nothing like what I saw in the pictures. Okay it's not a total disaster, but where is Geralt's conflict with killing people he drank an evening before and befriended? Now they were nameless minor opponents in a game! And why is Renfri suddenly another actress?
Aside from my other grievances I still liked Cavill's interpretation of Geralt and the world felt...okay. I later read the article again (which I should have done back then not only skimming the pictures) and found out that the producers didn't like the story (too little s**, to complicated, they had another vision and the series should anyway concentrate more on the female characters than on its namegiving character...Funny, as I said in the beginning.
Still I watched and always told myself 'It could be worse. This could be like Relic (which novel I adored and which movie I almost puked in theater) or the Expanse (which also deviated far from the main premises of the books).
But hey, why satisfiy the fans. They are the enemy nowadays.
Though I wonder... If these so called filmakers don't want to stick to the sourcematerial and create something of their own, why don't they do it all the way? Create something really new based on their ideas? Oh, they can't! See Witcher: Blood Origin.
Jonny, you are absolutely right. Take care. And stay well.

What they should have done if they wanted to make a new story based on the IP is have a story similar to what it is but have the actual lore hidden throughout the entire background to reveal that the story to takes place in the future after another conjunction of sphere caused society to revert. All humanlike races united into one and they must restart the Witcher program to help put the kingdoms back together.

The thing about the bar/concert scene at the start is it’s so fake on the part of the writers. They most likely wouldn’t be caught dead intervening to stop sexual harassment in public or private. The character is a projection of who the writers would like to be, but don’t have the guts to become in real life.

A show is riddled with bad writing, stiff acting, bizarre pacing, overdone tropes, strange artistic decisions like upside down battle scenes, cheesy effects, and oddly modern language in what is supposed to be ancient times.
White men: it is the diverse casting that is the problem!
