    Story 1: The moment that jerk yelled at me in the coffee shop I would have torn up the check and stated: "Well YOU have just caused the amount to TRIPLE for the domains."
    Story 4: Technically (in the US) the company violated the 13th Amendment. Forcing someone to work without being paid is slavery. Mandatory unpaid work meetings are illegal.

      I would have had someone recording the interaction, and then send it to the company giving them the reason the cost tripled. Would also be useful in a defense in case they filed a lawsuit

      The guy would be in thin ice legally. First its called domain squatting and there are issues with that, but more fundamentally, since he put it in his personal credit card and then expensed it that means the company paid for it, same as anything else he expensed.

    • @saybrowt
      @saybrowt 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Joe-lb8qnHe's getting charged for it 3 years down the line, which means it's a personal expense and he personally owns them. The way the company didn't give any pushback on paying the costs of the domain names up until that point suggests to me that they never reimbursed him for it up to that point.

    That "safety in numbers" thing is why we need unions.
    United we bargain; divided we beg.

    • @matthewozga
      @matthewozga 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      i remember back in the 80's there was a midsized grocery chain who's union demanded more money than the company could afford.
      so the company closed every store and let go every worker. when challenged in court the company clearly laid out the financial repercussions of giving into the demands of the union and the judge sided with the company.
      thousands of union employees were then out of a job. the union scrambled to retract its demands after losing in court, but at this point the company was pretty much already dismantled (leases cancelled, shelving sold or disposed of, etc) and their was no way to go back.
      greed cost every employee their job.
      come to think of it, didn't something similar to this happen to hostess???
      there was a time and a place for unions, 100 years ago when working conditions were literally a matter of life and death, but what they bravely fought for is now law in america (OSHA).

    The first one, whoever purchases the domain name owns it, doesn’t matter what it’s called or what it’s for. The company and that douche can’t demand he turn it over, especially the way he did it. I’d have ripped the check up in front of him and said “now you don’t get anything because of your attitude. Make sure and tell everyone why you don’t have them and never will.”
    And the last one, if she made those meetings mandatory, they HAVE to pay you. If they don’t you don’t have to show up and they can’t do anything to you since you aren’t gettin paid for it.

    For that last one, requiring unpaid work is a crime and is theft, and dealing with it within the company is the wrong approach. The proper approach is to report it to the state labor department. You can also file a lawsuit with an attorney (preferably one that specializes in labor laws) to get compensation and possibly a punitive award. The company needs to know that their manager is stealing from the employees on behalf of the company--and to make sure the higher-ups aren't onboard with theft, they need to know that the authorities are aware of it.

    Honestly it’d only be open for legal issues if he pretends to be the company.
    I forget the case specifics, but someone bought a domain before a big company could and set up basically a hate site for the complaints about the company and when taken to court the only thing that changed was an added disclaimer that the company didn’t own or run the site.
    The guy got worn down eventually by the company trying to sue over and over. Even if each got thrown out they still took money and time, you know?
    Just cause you’ll win every case doesn’t mean you’ll still win in the end.

    When the GM showed up to purchase the domain names and wanted to act like the a-hole he is I would have decided then not to sell. Telling him I'll have a lease contract sent to the CEO for the domains and if the company wants them now because of you they can pay me every year instead of only once.

  • @autobotjazz1972
    @autobotjazz1972 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Anyone can buy any available domain name even if it has a name that is trademarked. Companies when the internet just began to take off really had to scramble to lock down their names before others bought them and held for what basically a legal form of ransom. It still happens occasionally but it's a lot less common now as companies and entities are a lot smarter about locking down domain names before anything goes public.

    As someone who IS familiar with the legality of domain names: if OP in story 1 put the Domain names on HIS credit card, then it depends. If he is also the listed OWNER and CONTACT for said domain name, then said domain name is under HIS OWNERSHIP and thus the domain names could be legally redirected.

    Story 4: Sally is psychotic. The “no talking bad about customers amongst ourselves” rule would have been a deal breaker for me, never mind the mandatory unpaid meetings.
    As anybody who has worked a customer-facing job/position knows, >90% of customers are/can be assholes every now and then/from time to time/under the right (wrong?) circumstances, and the people that deal with them need a means of “blowing off the steam” that accumulates when dealing with these customers, and not being allowed to vent to co-workers about it is an unacceptable situation as far as I’m concerned.
    I can understand bosses not wanting you to do that IN FRONT OF THE CUSTOMERS. That, I get.
    But not allowing it AT ALL, even away from them , is a MAJOR red flag.

    Good Morning Rob...another GREAT video. I just cannot get enough of your videos and look forward to every new one. I asked you about your new, updated chameleon a few days ago and you responded, but I didn't get a chance to reply to your response. You said you created the new chameleon(s) using AI and I have to tell you, I am exceedingly impressed. You did an awesome job and I love the three dimensional look to the chameleons and the backgrounds behind them.
    I almost always have other applications running while listening to your videos, but I have TH-cam running in a split-screen setup. From my peripheral vision, I swear it looks like the chameleon is going to come out of the screen and plop down on my computer desk...I love it :).
    I also wanted to mention the backgrounds you are using while the individual stories are being narrated. I have always been a fan of Impressionistic art (Manet, Degas, Monet, Van Gogh, etc.) and your new(er) backgrounds remind me of Impressionism. As a result, I have the calming, cool, and hazy Impressionistic backgrounds in my peripheral vision when the chameleon is resting up for his spots between videos.
    Although I enjoyed your videos before, they are even better now and I wanted to take a couple minutes to let you know I (and I am sure other subscribers/listeners) enjoy our videos even more than I did before. Keep up the good work Rob...you have a forever-fan in me (God I hope that doesn't sound cringe or like I'm in stalker mode...not my intention at all).

    Yeah almost any job can be great or complete shit it always depends on who your boss is.
    I mean, there's a few jobs which are just always gonna be bad, based on personal preference. Like, I personally would never enjoy working in a hospital because it's just always a very stressful and exhausting environment, but some people like such things.
    Mandatory meeting at unpaid time? Yeah, nah, I'm gonna just assume that I'm excluded from that until I recieve payment. Not gonna let any employer control how I spend my time without compensation.

    Second one is full of it. He was told repeatedly to return to his usual tasks. He should be fired, but knows his employer is in a tough spot. OP is the pompous one here. Also he's kind of an idiot, since, even though no one else is applying for his job, his own refusal to do it means there's no reason to keep paying him anyway.

    Also love the new format. But try to find photos somewhat relevant, similar or relative to to the story being told.

    30 minute meeting that is unpaid. I am very sorry.. I might have attended that meeting.. But I was very likely not paying attention or listening to a word said in that meeting. I'm here.. but its not work related as I am not being paid for that time. Pay me to listen.. Don't pay me to retain nothing.

    Every honest restaurant I've heard of tips are shares because Busboys and cooks don't get tips directly but do a big share of the work.

    story 1: sadly NO you cannot keep those domain names for a lot more money. There's a thing called brand protection. This prevents people from taking sites such as ebay or microsoft. In general, most companies will prefer to just give a small amount for the domain name as it saves them a lot of trouble, but legally, they could simply "take" the names through court.
    However... Because the manager instructed the employee to put it on HIS name, that'd complicate things. As it essentially means that the company has given the rights to the name. So while he cannot keep the name legally, he'd most likely NEED to be compensated for it.

    I just gotta say, that i appreciate that you've made your voice slightly less accented with that snarky tone that is apparently your signature. It works well now and was nearly unbearable before.

    I like the posts, but do we really need the sneering inflection? I can only listen to this a few minutes at a time.

    That was pretty good advice you gave on that last story but the fact is if you go to wage an hour not only will you get paid for every one of those unpaid sections but you also get a whistleblower's fee you will get 10% of everybody else's back pay on top of that and 10% of the fine put money in your pocket while teaching your boss a lesson
