There is no paid leave in the US. It depends completely on the company. Our politicians go with the “the company should do the right thing” over “we need to make sure the right thing is done” philosophy. We are allowed to take 12 weeks unpaid leave on FMLA, but not many can afford 12 weeks of no pay

Working in both IT and phone support; it's alarmingly common for bosses to declare you should be fully ready to work at 8am on the dot. That means computers rebooted, tools, logins, and the whole lot ready to go to immediately take a call or work on an issue. I always have to remind them, that's working off the clock and has been highly illegal for 30+ years.
I have reached the age where when they say "Your application for leave has been denied" I hear "I am stupid & don't know how leave works". Now days I politely remind them that I am not asking, I will not be available those days, this is your forewarning. I learnt this lesson when a previous employer told me the afternoon before I was to have 2 weeks off, that my leave had been denied due to staffing issues. I visited the doctor that afternoon and took the next four weeks off for mental health leave all of which was paid because I never get sick. I then quit forcing them to pay me almost $10,000 in accrued unused leave. Fuck that place. Also in Australia paid parental leave is not something an employer can say no to, it can also be months long.
That description of Vet School sounds exactly as my wife described her experience in the early 90's. I used to work in medical research. I had no problem watching abdominal surgery on our test animals, but the first time I assisted on a lung transplant and actually had to see the lungs inflating and the heart beating, I had to go sit down for a while. The surgeons were very sympathetic and made sure I was okay. I was fine with surgery after that, even in the human OR.
KFC varies wildly from location to location. A few locations serve pretty good chicken. Most serve chicken inedibly salty, dry, and cold. Church's chicken is usually OK. though some are identical to KFC. Don't know about Popeyes or chick-fil As, , since their politics are anti-customer, and they MIGHT or might serve customers who have more melanin than their servers to avoid bankruptcy. But dark or olive skinned should not count on edible or safe food. I think these people, or at least their supervisors, from what I heard them say in Phoenix, want to kill you. I have visited these institutions only a couple of times, so I do not have a representative sample.
On pressure at veterinary school: a friend of mine who will be retiring soon - in her sixties - from running her own veterinary clinic and surgery for decades, as well as having served on the State Veterinary Board, told me that people who flunk out of veterinary school... are usually admitted quite easily into medical schools for humans. So take all those hospital shows with interns and residents and the stress and lack of sleep - it's a cakewalk compared to veterinary school. (Because you only need to know one species and one anatomy.)
The US has no labor laws regarding maternity or paternity paid time off. We do have the Family Medical Leave Act which protects employees’ jobs if they have to take up to 12 weeks leave for themselves or family member. Their health insurance must be paid for them during this time. It only protects a person’s job, it doesn’t require employers to pay the employee while they’re on leave.
I have zero issue with nepotism as long as the person can actually do their job. You don’t go to college to get an education anymore. You are literally paying for networking.
First one: he needs to Block the manager's number, if that manager is ringing him every day to ask dumb questions. No need to be "on call" when you're not being paid for it.
Last story: As for the second day off... Should have offered him a double (or triple) pay to work that day. It's up to him to accept or refuse the offer.
Story 1: in Austria we have different types of maternity leave. In addition, there are 8 weeks of paid leave before and after the birth by law. The shortest variant is 12 months (+2 months if shared with partner) and the longest variant is up to 30 months (+6 months if shared with partner). Although you really should consider what variant you choose, because the longer you stay at home, the lesser the financial aid will be
“Bless your heart” roughly translates to “god you are stupid” in the south. A good test for what part of the US someone is from is say it to them and watch their reaction, if they say thanks they are from the north, if they get sickly sweet or mad/offended they are southern, the deeper south the bigger the reaction
It's also situational. In some situations, it essentially means "F YOU." In others, it's "Are you stupid?" More rarely, it is an offering of condolences.
Re story one. By the manager calling the husband all those time, I’m surprised that wasn’t classed as harassment. I would have bought them all to the attention of the union and his bosses
Why be such a stickler for rules? The work is getting done on time and the company is benefiting. So what if there is a weird work schedule or two? Another boss that doesn't take the time to learn how things work. Then proceeded to alienate the people that make things work. Net result, things don't work. And they're confused as to why.
It’s just sad that many middle managers get it stuck in their heads that they are the big cheese and that the shot doesn’t stick to them. As often as not it turns out that way.
First Story about Parental Leave. . My son lives in Sweden. The Swedish parental leave system entitles parents to 𝟰𝟴𝟬 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻 𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗱. Each parent is entitled to 240 of those days. So the husband can take leave, or the wife take leave. . Or BOTH take leave at the same time. . Until the 480 days are used up. The leave can be taken as individual days, or blocks of days . . Whatever suits the parents. . NOT what suits the employer. . AND while that parental leave is being used, you can't be laid off or fired. . THAT is how Sweden looks after families. .
The number one job of a middle manager should be to take the heat for your competent employees so they can do things properly. And you should make sure that your employees are competent. That’s not to say you should come down heavily on employees who make a mistake once. You or a qualified employee should go over their mistake, how to avoid or fix it, and just make sure it isn’t repeated. One thing I have noted is that too many of these stories involve positions where there is only one person skilled in a task. This should be avoided, as bad things happen, and there should always be backup.
My goodness, in my country there's about a years time split between the mum and dad. About a third for each and then a third that they're free to distribute between each as needed. And it's at 80% wage. Also, everyone has a right to a kindergarten spot once the baby is one year old. It's subsidized, but not entirely free.
Story1) I had a job, 1weeks on 1week off. Had a baby, 8 weeks leave. I took my 1 week off, 2 weeks leave, 1 week off. Work 2 weeks, then Repeat. This gave me an extra full week off for every 2 weeks leave. Basically got 4 months off between 2 weeks work per month.
A GOOD manager knows that when replacing a previous Manager, the WISE thing to do is spends a week or two just sitting there watching what goes on during the week to see how things work BEFORE stepping in to make changes...That way, they now see what's been happening, who does what, and what, if anything, needs improvement...more importantly, they know who to talk to about those changes before making them so any objections can be raised as to why the change won't work (Usually because it was tried before and was a COMPLETE Disaster)... The Bad Manager just doesn't do anything... The HORRIBLE managers start changing everything right from day one with an "I'm the Manager, you'll do what I say or be Fired!!!" Attitude... 😄😁😆😅😂🤣
STORY 1 : that manager is an ABLEIST JERK!!!!!! I’m disabled myself and I was triggered FOR OP’s wife!!!!!! Teach him (the manager) some manners for crying out loud!!!!!!!!!!!)
I'm in the US and I get 3 weeks, then we have a "step back in" program where the first month we get 10 hour weeks, then 2nd month 20 hour, 3rd month 30 hour weeks, then back to full time. We also have Open (unlimited) PTO
A good manager should seem to do nothing while everything runs smoothly. If a Manager is working hard.. Something has gone wrong. Its a bit like the maintenance department. If they are doing routine tasks and not busy.. Everything is working. When they are busy.. things are broken and not working.
All this story tells me is just how dystopian and toxic the whole American working culture really is. And how poorly the US treats employees. I also have to laugh at the "pro life" folks who keep voting against any form of maternity leave as standard. Because if I wasn't laughing I'd be doing something much more violent.

Facts about the comments about management. The only thing management needs to do is to make sure they complete their management paperwork, ensure that any employee/customer/patient/providers are taken care of properly if any issues arise the regular staff can’t handle, to know how to do every job that they’re in charge of so when SHTF the manager can jump in at the worst area to help out (or wherever the technical group specifically needs extra help the manager is capable of doing in professional/specialized fields), and to properly delegate work to employees as it comes in to not overwhelm them with the stress. You only step in as a manager when there is a possible to probable danger to people/property, a crime is about to be or is being committed, someone is violating or about to violate company policy’s, and other times where people are doing stuff that is highly unorthodox/not normal but to go inquire about the reasoning behind it (because sometimes they may have a good idea or on the way to a good idea) that with both of your minds you may come up with a ground breaking idea/technique. Never just go into attacking your subordinates in front of others unless there is an immediate danger to life & limb of people but to only get the attention of everyone so that it can be a learning time and to prevent anything disastrous but don’t go into personal worker attacks at all or really rip them if they deserve it until behind closed doors with HR & other management to properly handle the situation. I’ve always made sure to take care of my workers and even have told my workers my bonus and sign a contract with them that they all can vote for peoples contributions of work to divide up the 25% of my bonus (no cap on how much that could be so the bigger bonus more for them to split and larger groups I went up to 40-50% but the bonuses where usually larger so it was around the same until the group started producing well above expectations.) that I would show them my previous quarterly bonus or that of my predecessor when starting with a new group. Only once did we have a super slacker that the group unanimously voted him out of the bonus because he would sleep, leave early, come in late, and would always turn in extremely subpar work that everyone else had to pick up his slack. So everyone got an even portion of his $1100 bonus that gave an extra $183 for each of their quarterly bonuses that I gave them from mine. I generally would always approve vacation and told them to book in advance to save money and we would all make sure that the rest of us would pick up the slack during each other’s vacations so they wouldn’t be bothered unless they where highly specialized on a project that needed to verify our work on his part but we would just send it to him and when his wife was in the spa he would do what he could based on how crucial it was needed regardless of the order it came in and would work on his laptop on trips to tourist sites when his wife would generally nap. Since he ended up finishing it quicker than we thought even though he didn’t need it the group all pitched him a day off of their time so he got an extra 6 days plus 2 weekend days to extend their vacation because his technical part was done and we didn’t have much left to finish. His wife and himself got everyone on the team a gift for when they got back from their vacation as a thank you, gave each person on the team a highly customized birthday present that year, and a really nice cultural gift from their extended vacation that probably fed a local family for a couple months per persons gift. When you have a good team and a good boss it becomes like a family that you all just help each other out and look out for each other even years later. I got tired of the managers & executives above me that seemed to lack basic common sense or problem of everyday folks that don’t make 6+ figures with bonuses starting in 5-6 figures so they are detached from the reality of their workers. I ended up going into business for myself and have a few side hustles that took initial work/maybe up to an hour a week for each side hustle with a large 4-16 hour push once every 1-6 months depending on the hustle. Most of them I take care of passively while dong other stuff I have to do anyways for my primary job/family and when there is enough I do a large push to increase the passive income. Life has been so much less stressful than running in the rat race.
Paternity/maternity leave varies greatly from company to company. You have the national guidelines but individual companies can grant however much they want. At one of my jobs the fella next to me had a baby and he took 4 or 6 weeks off, don't remember which.
Why does the USA not get better maternity laws? Easy answer, The governmental kickbacks would be significantly reduced, so those that represent the people's personal bank accounts would be affected.

The USA is 12 weeks ma/paternity. Companies don't have to pay it. My state just passed a law that began Jan 1st 2024 so we get 85% of our normal salary. I didn't make much at the time my first kid was born so I took 3 days off. I made more but we bought a new house so with our second kid I took a week off and later took a second week off. I wish I could have taken all my time off but without pay that was impossible.

Having met a lot of surgeons… human surgeons are assholes. No idea about vet surgeons of course, but. My internal medicine doc mom told me once “you gotta be at least a little bit off to be confident enough to cut someone open believing you can fix them with knives, forceps, and sewing needles. (She was of course joking here, but she wasn’t wrong.) There’s a harsh “I don’t have time for anything but my own personal x” in surgeons. Not heard of anesthesiologists being jerks though.
I was working at a call center, we worked normal work weeks. I asked for Friday off and got it. Then we switched project to one where we could be scheduled every day of the week. The moron scheduled me for Saturday (Monday off as compensation). I just told them that I would not show up, I would be happy to work Monday but I had asked for this vacation months before the new project. Then came Summer vacation, and I asked for two week after Midsummer (which is a huge deal here in Sweden) and the morons decided I had to work for ten hours on Midsummers day (a Saturday, at the beginning of my vacation). They really had no clue what so ever. My next employer was extremely confused when I asked for a vacation from Thursday to Sunday, where Thursday was a national holiday and we never worked weekends so it was all just one day of vacation.
So, a system that worked was already in place that worked? And you made changes and effed it all up? And someone hired you and decided you were allowed to make those changes. Maroons.
Different parts of the usa have better baby birth time. In 2005 when my daughter was born I got 3 paid months. At 100% and could have gotten 3 months at 60% pay. Some states a you get about 5 months at 60% pay

I always have to remind them, that's working off the clock and has been highly illegal for 30+ years.
I actually thought that was why people aspired to "middle management"...in order to do as little as possible. 28:15
On the vacation story: 99% sure that was Kroger. Only retail chain I know of that has a union and is very prominent in the south
Deny... Paternity leave? Really? Is that even allowed?
0:01 That chameleon gives me the "uncanny valley effect" kind of chills ugh...
"bless your heart" means there's the following part that isn't said out loud that goes "because it's too late for your brain"
The United States doesn’t have long term maternity leave because of the conservative representatives in their government
Ah, KCC and morning coffee. Pretty good combo.
Have a nice day😋
My morning routine as well
KFC varies wildly from location to location.
It amazes me that people in the USA have to use holiday time off when they are sick.
Love the new chameleon!
US workers are allowed 3 months of FMLA. It is only paid, if the worker has enough sick/vacation/comp/PTO etc. to still receive money.
Although you really should consider what variant you choose, because the longer you stay at home, the lesser the financial aid will be
I’m in Australia, and my employer will match the government’s minimum, and if you want to, you can take the time at half pay and double the time.
Story 1 - While our country is lacking in many areas, we do have one of the best parental leaves in the world. I think it's second or third best?
"Worst" or "least"?
Government isn't magic.
As I understand US Labor Law, an Employer CAN'T Legally deny Maternity/Paternity Leave...
Wow! When did you get the new mascot?
I created him a while back, but just started using it recently :)
The leave can be taken as individual days, or blocks of days . . Whatever suits the parents. . NOT what suits the employer. .
AND while that parental leave is being used, you can't be laid off or fired. .
THAT is how Sweden looks after families. .
True. I’m Canadian and I got 6 months off maternity leave.
3 days of leave for a father is generous in the us.
3 days is quite often how much bereavement leave one gets in the US as well. (That's how much I got when my mother passed away).
Great stories and nice backgrounds 👍🙂
My goodness, in my country there's about a years time split between the mum and dad.
About a third for each and then a third that they're free to distribute between each as needed.
And it's at 80% wage.
Also, everyone has a right to a kindergarten spot once the baby is one year old.
It's subsidized, but not entirely free.
listening to this from germany. "all his time of and paternity leave... 3 Weeks.." thats so crazy. my wife had like 3 years of maternity leave
In the US, extended family leave csn be used as a perk. I had a coworker gone for a full year. I think her husband had six months.
Ah, the scourge of a long time employee, a new mangler that turns out to be a micro mangler!
First story... harrassment like that is illegal.
Good Morning Rob hope your week is going well. Have a great day 👍
Have a great day everyone 👋🤗
The first story is confusing. At one point he said he is coming back to work November 10th, then says he was out until January?
A good manager should seem to do nothing while everything runs smoothly. If a Manager is working hard.. Something has gone wrong. Its a bit like the maintenance department. If they are doing routine tasks and not busy.. Everything is working. When they are busy.. things are broken and not working.
6 Weeks before ,8 Weeks after and till 3 Years of Elterntime
All this story tells me is just how dystopian and toxic the whole American working culture really is. And how poorly the US treats employees. I also have to laugh at the "pro life" folks who keep voting against any form of maternity leave as standard. Because if I wasn't laughing I'd be doing something much more violent.
Actually, it is the norm in the U.S., where corporate profits, and stockholders' dividends are far more important than the people who actually create the wealth that is skimmed off for those non-contributors.
In Australia, parental leave is 14 weeks at full pay or 28 weeks at half pay.. America sounds like a hellscape land to live in lol
Did Canadians get This is Going to Hurt about new doctors in the UK's national health system? Are Americans going to remake it because it's some of the best, slightly traumatising recent television.
Good morning
babe wake up the chameleon changed again
Love the new graphics!
In the USA you can each take 3 months now. I don't know when this happened that he only got three days.
Depends on the State.
Paternity/maternity leave varies greatly from company to company. You have the national guidelines but individual companies can grant however much they want. At one of my jobs the fella next to me had a baby and he took 4 or 6 weeks off, don't remember which.
Nice, your video editing is leveling up!
Thanks!
i’m early for once today!!! Morning Rob. I will send you a recipe for a delicious cinnamon cake 😊
Everything together is 3 weeks? Per law u got a minimum of 20 days vacation...
I've been waiting for my cookies for quite a while now
I'll take peanut butter and chocolate chip please lol
Why does the USA not get better maternity laws? Easy answer,
The governmental kickbacks would be significantly reduced, so those that represent the people's personal bank accounts would be affected.
Because retail tends to be a race to the bottom - cheaper, cheaper, cheaper.
Paying people not to work cost money.
Tip: The "E" in syncope is not silent. ("sing·kuh·pee")
Tim Curry wasn't in Home Alone, just an FYI.
Home Alone 2. He was the hotel manager 😉
@@KarmaStoriesPodcast exactly but not in Home Alone ( if you meant 2, you should have said 2 )
I mean.. Is this argument really necessary lol?
@@KarmaStoriesPodcast what argument? I just pointed out an error, on that post.
dont like the lizard so close
The amount of epeen in the medical world comes from an entrenched god complex . Knock ‘em down.👍🏻
Rob...I love your new chameleon graphic at the beginning of the video. If you created it, kudos...if someone else did, will you let us know who the artist is? I would love to commission him/her for some work!
BTW...I LOVE your channel and listen to your videos as soon as I get the chance. When I see the little red dot next to Karma Comment Chameleon, I click on it right away :). Thanks for the work you put into your videos.
Thanks! I created the new Chameleon via AI image generation.
I think in the us it’s up to 6 weeks off for the mom. Don’t know about the dad as far as FMLA. Does anyone know better? (Probably so since I don’t really know and am just guessing lol)
There are various configurations of the in Polite Company insult of 'Bless your heart" down here in the South, depending on your level of anger/pettiness at that moment of Time. It also helps if you have a Southern Drawl so sweet it'll make honeybees faint and folks teeth hurt just hearing them when pronouncing the words you chose. The worst one is "Why God Bless your ever-lovin little pea-pickin heart, aren't you just So Special.".......well now I just can't write the interpretation of that here, Momma havin taught me Manners and we bein in Polite Company and all, since it would break the InterWebz, but ya'll get my drift, I reckon.
Thumbnail is wrong. Redheads are actually very responsive. 👍
I love you baby chameleon. Are you going to put your new avatar on your merchandise. I'll be first in line to get a couple of them.
