If you were in that world, wandering around in the forest, who would you rather encounter , Rick or Negan? the answer should be straightforward ;) one guy will hack you to death for fear of you finding where his people live.. the other guy who ask you to join him.
Negan wants to save people, that's his aim, that's the reason they are calling themselves "Saviors" and their base "Sanctuary". In his twisted broken mind Negan thinks that the only way people can be saved is being dominated, because during his first days after the outbreak every single group he joined get killed. He reached the conclusion that people are weak, he was the only one that survived every single time, the rest just died. So If they cannot protect themselves, because they are weak and/or stupid, he would do it for them. The way he thinks is better is via dictatorship and sect like ideology. Rick and the others were the proof that showed him that there could be other strong people who can save themselves and rebuild civilization. That's why he wanted Rick at his side at the beginning, that's why he let Jadis live, and Carl, and Eugene and forgave several people over time. He doesn't want to kill more people than he needs to. They are not just a resource, they are the bricks to build a new world, a new society guided by him, the only guy who, as he believes, is capable of saving them all. The comic "Here's Negan" gives an interesting POV about this topic.
It appeared that Negan did feel bad when he said he didn’t want to have to kill everyone. But Rick did push him to that point where he felt like peace was impossible.
Peace wasnt possible because the savior's way of life was not sustainable. They forced other groups to submit to them through violence and killing a member of the group until they did. All the carnage is a product of the saviors own doing. They deserved everything they got.

Negan being reasonable is him wanting slaves to work for him. Rick, Michonne and the rest of the family is not going to work to provide for him and the Saviors, point blank. He was given an ultimatum to leave them alone and squash the fight. Negan refuses, so he has to die.
maybe negan's just testing them. what if at some point if negan is please they dont have to do all those work anymore. maybe they'll just be able to get supplies for themselves but sharing with everyone else too. they could have shared ideas with negan on other kinds of work that can be done to improve communities and so on. t
