Very nice and well done scouting trip. Monument Valley would be an excellent spot to see the eclipse. We are staying in a Bryce Canyon National Park cabin near the rim. That way we can walk over to view and image. I will use 2 cameras and 2 lenses with solar filters: 1)Canon 6d with Sigma 14mm lens with solar filter and 2)Canon 60Da with 1.4x teleconverter, Canon 400 mm L lens with solar filter. I know that annularity will not be centered like in Capitol Reef or Monument Valley but we will also be visiting other locations in southern Utah on the trip. Clear sky !!
Thank you so much for these videos! I am planning on viewing it from Canyon De Chelly in Chinle AZ. Booked my lodgings and began my preparations almost a year ago. Traveling all the way from Massachusetts to see it!
I ended up going to Yuba Lake State Park in UT had a great view of the eclipse there. We had some high clouds to start off, but we were able to see the entire event.
Hope you have great weather! Crater Lake is what I would call “high risk, high reward”. Weather is not usually good at that time of year, but if it is good that day, you’ll have an amazing experience!
Going to Corpus Christi Texas baby! I have a friend from Cali flying in and we're going to watch it on the beach. As of today, Corpus will be a cool 85 degrees and lots of sun (except during the eclipse). Nice! Going to watch the April eclipse on top of Enchanted Rock. Nice again! Texas is loaded up on eclipses over the next few months.
Thanks for this; just what I was looking for. You don't mention it, but the shot of you by that leafless tree would actually be a good location. If you could get both the tree and the eclipse in focus, with the exposure right, it would be very dramatic. I will be near Richfield and Beaver.
Hi, I chanced on your channel and absolutely found the planning helpful and I do appreciate your roadtrip to show the locations within the path of annularity. I have booked a hotel in Kayenta in Oct for the eclipse to head out to Monument Valley, and happen to see this video at the time, how far were you from the visitor center (only been there once before) was your location close to where the cabins were? Would you be ok in sharing GPS coords or location tips within Monument Valley. I am still new to the hobby but have used Photopills alongside Google Maps, and found it initially daunting. Any tips.
Honestly haven’t used Photopills before, but have heard great things about it. I was probably about a mile from the Visitors Center, as the crow flies. I looked at the angles from the Visitor Center as well and they just don’t come out as well as I like for getting the path to line up with the monuments themselves. I wish I’d had more ability to scout other locations within the park, but I needed to get to my next spot in Utah. There should be lots of other great places within Monument, though. The trick is to find a spot west of the monuments because you’ll be looking east toward them at sunrise and during the eclipse. Hopefully photopills can help you with that part. If at all possible, be there the morning before the eclipse so you can see if you like your location and quickly check out your secondary site. Email me through my website and I’ll see if so can do some more to help you. Totalitytown.net
I wish I'd seen this before committing to an Eclipse Workshop in Crater Lake NP, Oregon! Oh well... It sounds like your approach to capturing this upcoming event will be a wide-angle shot showing foreground. If so, How are you capturing it when you should have the solar filter on? Take it later or before and combine the two? I'm trying to figure out my strategy for that day. Thanks!
Good question. Yes, I’ll do wide angle. I’d like to make a super-quick video about how to photograph this annular eclipse but probably won’t be able to. If possible, take your landscape shot in the evening (either before or after the eclipse) because that is when it will be directly lit by the Sun rather than backlit. Though if a backlit foreground would look good, take it just before sunrise, too!
D'oh! Oftentimes crater Lake is closed this time of year because snow, and lo and behold it's supposed to start snowing today, there's a chance of snow on Saturday too. Be safe and I hope you get to see it.
Nice! I lived in the path in 2017 as well, but I'll be driving a long ways (without a moment's hesitation) for both the 2023 annular and the 2024 total.
I saw the eclipse in Salem Oregon back in 2017 and was too focused on it to take any decent photos. The ones I did capture were pretty amazing tho, and they were on film! I want to try and capture the eclipse this year at monument valley with medium format film, tho I don’t know where the best location might be, as I wanna capture the mittens. I know the visitors center will be packed so I don’t think that’s the best spot. How far out did you drive to your location?
Hey, Red Vega. Good question. I don’t want to post that publicly here, but I am okay with sharing the location. Contact me through my website and I’ll be able to email you the details: Totalitytown.net
Thank you for sharing you knowledge. Do you know where I can find the angle above the horizon for different locations along the path of the upcoming annular and total eclipses across the United States? Along with NW Mexico for October 14, 2023, my hope is for Ingram, Texas for April 8, 2024. It is a lot of driving for this Minnesotan, but I enjoy the adventure in getting interesting photos.
Cool, but not cold. Bring layers and you should be fine. Of course it is different every year…. Plan for cold-ish and then keep your eyes on the weather forecast.
Very good! Close. Sunset Pt. Was a beautiful morning there, despite the thin clouds moving in and out. Found a few other potential spots in Capitol Reef, but did not get to properly scout them all. Beautiful park, though!
Good question! I don’t want to post that info publicly, but if you contact me through my website I can email you some details. Totalitytown.net - it might take a week or two for me to reply, though, because I’ll be backpacking for a while.
It is my plan to go to Bisti Badlands or Valley of Dreams in NW New Mexico just northwest of Chaco Culture NHP. It is very remote but great for clear skies and smaller crowds expected. I'm just concerned about how to get the landscape included with the hoodoos and still have the annular eclipse in the scene. I suppose I will have to get closer to the hoodoos in order to get the ring of fire within the landscape. Then I will focus stack to get both the foreground and the eclipse in perfect focus.
Sounds like a good plan and a fun shot. Depending on how wide the field of view for your camera lens is, you might need to be further away to get both in the shot. If you are there the evening before, use a planetarium app like Sky Safari to see what star is closest to where the Sun will be during annularity the next day. That way you can know how well everything fits and how it will be framed. If possible, take landscape shots at sunset the day before as well as sunrise - each has its own lighting. Please share your result! It sounds great and I’d love to see how it turns out.
I live in cedar city now, from hawaii (i know why. Pilot school) but im 50miles from beaver and might go up there. Theres an amazing icecream shop wr could hang out at
I and my posse will be in Winnemucca the night before the eclipse (already preplanned and reserved) ---- anyone have suggestions about where to set up in the morning in this area? I don't know the terrain and travel in detail, and I don't want to be watching the eclipse from a motel parking lot with Interstate 80 within ear- and eyeshot! 😎😮😊
Bro, you have a SERIOUS audio issue. You need to "normalize" your audio tracks before you publish. I've got every volume control maxed out and I can barely hear you. All of your videos are like this, some worse than others. This one is the worst I've heard yet. If you can't normalize, just increase the audio level so that it peaks just below the red line (where the audio meter turns red).
Hello from Shiprock, New Mexico!
Thanks for your foresight and research from last year! Subscribed
Thanks and welcome
That capitol reef sunset! 🤩

Great trip!
thank you!!!

Nice! Good job starting early! Hope you got a good spot before people started increasing their prices.
I ended up going to Yuba Lake State Park in UT had a great view of the eclipse there. We had some high clouds to start off, but we were able to see the entire event.
Great summary! I live about 90 min from Crater Lake and weather permitting, that is where I will be getting my shots from. Fingers crossed!

Thank you. I'm in Albuquerque, I'll be up in the Sandia Mountains for the eclipse.

I’ve only just heard of this. I’m English and the eclipse occurs on my birthday..
I’m seriously considering a trip! Thanks for the video
You should! It will be a fun event. However, if you can only plan one trip for an eclipse, then pick the total solar eclipse in April 2024.
Chico Canyon may be somewhat better road now. I was there in 2016. It's a wonderful site! 🌖
Glad to hear it!

In case someone is watching this for locations: Monument valley has announced they are closed.

2017 passed over my hometown in southern Illinois. It's the same for 2024

Check out the interactive eclipse maps by Xavier Jubier.
Lived in the path for 2017, got to watch a massive thunderstorm roll in ten minutes before totality, 0/10.
Great job on this! When you were at Monument Valley, what was the lens that you were using to take those Sun photos?
Sorry for the delayed reply. Been on a big trip. I used a 20mm lens for the Timelapse’s (big, wide field of view).
Corpus Christi, Texas.
Here in San Antonio TX we are prepping for 1.5 million to show up for both solar eclipses. Are yall ready to Fiesta!!🎉
You guys will have a great time! Enjoy.
Yep.... Kerrville TX at the Empty Cross to Worship the Creator
Great Video. Can I ask you what the temp was like in the morning? Thank you So Much
Cool, but not cold. Bring layers and you should be fine. Of course it is different every year…. Plan for cold-ish and then keep your eyes on the weather forecast.
Too bad about the wind blasting the audio. but nice job covering all the spots. Missed Four Corners Monument where we will be.
Nice road trip. I wish that I’d known about the eclipse last May when I visited those spots. Was that Sunrise Point in Capitol Reef?
Very good! Close. Sunset Pt. Was a beautiful morning there, despite the thin clouds moving in and out. Found a few other potential spots in Capitol Reef, but did not get to properly scout them all. Beautiful park, though!

What about Monroe, UT?
Hi, I have a hotel booked in Hobbs NM. What do you think?
Looks remote. Decent chance of good weather. Hope you have a great time!
Thanks very much!
Ill be in Capitol Reef.
See you there!
How do you have a mic and are still almost silent?

Monument Valley *MAY* be a no-go as the Navajo Nation has announced it is closing their borders on that day for religious reasons.
I just heard that a few days ago! Bummer. When I spoke with them last year, the Navajo Nation was still planning on the park being open that day.
I already know where my site is going to be: Muley Point. Where are you thinking in 2024?
Easily one of the best spots. I'm probably going to Nevada but still need to scout/confirm the location.
I can't wait for this video to blow tf up in like July when the rest of America catches on to what's happening.
I'm trying to make my reservations this week. I'll let you know after that ;)
Check but I think Monument Valley will be closed due to Tribal beliefs.
