    Why does one need to use aluminum foil? Are other materials acceptable for the pinhole? (I just worry about the foil getting crumpled or ripped as it gets transported and handled. Also, is a nail sized hole better than a true pinhole? (I've seen some that use an actual straight pin.) I'm guessing it is easier to aim with a slightly larger hole? (nail vs. pin) Thx

    • @casedinlight
      @casedinlight 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The foil lets you poke a hole neatly while also keeping out all of the surrounding light, and the material is thin so it doesn't skew the light. As long as you can make a hole in the box that isn't all messed up, that's all that you need. The size changes it slightly. I tried both a tiny pin hole, and also a larger hole about the size of a medium nail. The tine hole makes a really small sun dot, but it's slightly more focused. The larger hole will make the sun a little larger, but slightly less focused. I much preferred the nail-sized hole. You can use a potato chip bag (the "metal" type) and that stuff is way more durable than regular aluminum foil.
      If you're using the sun as your light source, it's just as easy to aim both. If you're trying it with a lightbulb, it's harder to find with the small hole.

    • @davidcrispin4324
      @davidcrispin4324 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The longer the box, the larger the image of the sun, so the best thing would be a pinhole for image sharpness, and a long box for a large image. When I say long box, I mean the distance between the pinhole and the paper viewing screen. People who make how-to videos without first mastering the subject really piss me off.

    Hi Wes enjoyed the video! I've been trying to find a solar cover for my camera and have not been successful. Where did you happen to get yours from and is it ISO 12312-2 complient? Thank you!

    the point is, to not look directly at the sun - not ever, but ppl tend to want to look during an eclipse. the shadow of the sun is perfectly safe- again, the shadow of the sun is perfectly safe! turn your back to the sun, and use this cereal box method or a show box or whatever works best for you!! ENJOY!!

    I don't eat cereal. I guess I'll use one of my bazillion Amazon boxes I have lying around.
