    This is one of the best and most informational guides to the simple cuts I've seen in any medium. I've read many books, took wood classes and watched many videos and this one is the most clearly communicated without a wasted word. Fantastic.

    So I’m 72 years old and either I don’t have enough strength in my hand or my knives aren’t sharp enough or maybe it’s even the wood I’m using because it seems like I’m having a hard time making those cuts. I do love the video because it is to the point and explains the knives I should be using so I will try to follow that a little closer and see if it works. Thanks for all your help.😎

      What wood do you use? I recommend getting linden or basswood which is very soft. Here I leave you a sharpening video so you can see if your knives are sharp. th-cam.com/video/yIs6MyVSE3M/w-d-xo.html

      I do have basswood that I purchased from Michael’s so maybe my knives are dull. I noticed you roughed up the leather straps with sandpaper before applying the green stuff and I didn’t use sandpaper on the leather strop. I purchased before putting the green stuff on there. I’ll try sharpening the knives again. Thanks.

      @@patriciawaterman9764 To find out if your knives are sharp, try shaving your hair, if it doesn't cut, it's not sharp enough. The sandpaper thing was to remove the paint from the leather but it is not mandatory. Now if they are old knives it is possible that the leather is not enough, first sharpen them with a 360 dry metal sandpaper and once the edge is recovered you can use the leather. Finally, if it doesn't work for you, you can do woodcarving with Dremel, as you can see in my videos, the Dremel solves the problem of lack of strength in the hands. What brand are your knives?

    • @patriciawaterman9764
      @patriciawaterman9764 ปีที่แล้ว

      I purchased a Gaxcoo set of hook, sloyd and detail knives. Then I watched a podcast and purchased a Ramelson beginners bench knife, and a Pfeil knife. I’ll get some sandpaper tomorrow and re-sharpen everything and do the hair test and let you know how I make out. Thanks.😉

    Great! But what is the reason that makes curved blades better for curved cuts and straight blades better for straight cuts?

      Good morning,
      If you start carving in wood, the muscular work for the hands can be demanding but it will get better with practice.
      To reduce the effort I recommend a soft wood, ideally get basswood.
      The quality of the knives and their sharpening can also play a role, a well sharpened knife should be able to shave your hair, I am attaching a video on sharpening knives.

    To me this seems like bullshit ;-)
    Fact: The curved knives are mostly used for green woodworking (spoons, kuksas, butterknives, ...) while the straight knives are mainly used for whitteling wooden figures in dry (bass-)wood.

    • @CharlyBrunetSculpture
      @CharlyBrunetSculpture  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dry wood and green wood are carved in the same way, the only difference is that green wood is softer and easier to carve. The curve of the blade influences the types of cuts and how it enters and exits the grain of the wood as indicated in the video.
