When my wife and I lived in Los Angeles, CA, between 1989 and 1993, we looked for homes in the Westchester area near LA International Airport. For the money back then the affordable homes were absolute garbage. It was also a place I did not want to raise children. Our friend suggested we look in the Atlanta area because my wife could transfer with her job to the Atlanta area. We found our home in Alpharetta in 1993 on 1/2 acre with a creek in the back and no HOA. Truly a bargain compared to LA prices. Being from LA a creek was not something that normally comes with a piece of property. Here in North GA we have creeks flowing everywhere and the natives don't normally seem to give them much thought related to their natural beauty. We have lived in Alpharetta for 30 years and love it here. We live in the "Town Center District" so we can walk to downtown Alpharetta. There wasn't much of a downtown back in 1993 though. When David Belle Isle was mayor, he had a vision for Alpharetta becoming a destination city and the "The Technology Capitol of the South". Because we get plenty of rain, the landscaping here is amazing and the city has done a great job creating bike and walking paths all over the city. Related to our property, I love the fact we have no HOA which is unusual. Even without an HOA, we never had a neighbor paint their house green with purple stripes. People do have hens in our neighborhood and one of our neighbors had goats. The city of Alpharetta gave the green light to hens a short time ago as long as the property size is an acre or more. I spoke with my neighbor across the street the other day and he brought up the rooster on the property behind him that sometimes wakes him up. I mentioned in this truly insane political climate if the homeowner got in trouble with the city he could simply say his rooster identifies as a hen.

great place but very pricey now, and 20 yrs. ago it was like a small town -- it grows a lot each day
