some people laugh as a nervous/anxious response so I'm not totally sure it's fair to say that means she doesn't care. I do think some people choose to ignore their finances out of fear, and that is probably at least partially at play.

@@sardonicprincessI don't think that would help. Divorce is costly and it's not as if it was only one of them who spent too much without thinking. So even if they divorce they would still need to pay all that money.

@@marys6610 I foster and probably spend about $300 a month on food (special diets) litter, and random incidentals. I foster for an organisation who doesn't have the capacity to provide the basics so they'll pay for the vet but that's it. With that said, this is $300 AUD in 2024, not $600 CAD in 2008 haha. I loved this show as a kid/teen. I found it so fascinating and I really owe a lot to Gail for teaching me how to be financially responsible. I still recommend her books to people, even if they aren’t “current”, they still go over how to have a budget and manage your income.
Edit: “current” meaning she often makes references to interest rates that were much higher in the late 00s than what we see now. But the general practices and ideas remain the same.

I agree with your take and think this episode missed the mark in many ways. For example, I was sure that one of the challenges would've been related to transportation (trying a one car household for a week, try biking to work for a week, etc.). Also, like you, I think the public secret telling was a bit much. I think something that could have been said/taught is that their family can reallocate some of the animal rescue funds towards a relationship or family therapist. Or they could have worked together on a task that requires communication for the third challenge.

    • @shawnaripari
      @shawnaripari  วันที่ผ่านมา +5

A transportation challenge could have been a good one, and one the show ha done before so I think it could have been in their wheelhouse. I like your suggestions for the third challenge as well because it could have been so many things to get them speaking or working together. The show has done scavenger hunts or puzzles before, which I would have much preferred.

Vet bills, training, food, vaccines, preventative care, speciality diets all add up when you’re rescuing animals. But on the flip side so do things like unneeded accessories, fancy treats, etc. So I don’t think the amount itself is unreasonable, it just depends on one’s budget and what it’s actually being spent on. :)

I also picked up on a vibe from her. It’s the way of wording that nudges you into an understanding that is not reality so when they’re caught, it was a “misunderstanding.” Specifically the “I talked to some people about extra work” as opposed to “I picked up enough extra work from people in the office to get the extra income.” Her confession, too. It was 3 times more than I said but no actual amounts. So he has to do the mental labor of trying to remember what bull💩 amount she told him however long ago?

you're right that the hose work seemed to be something that she took on. There were a few comments in it in the show that made it seem like she didn't fully enjoy that role and may want it more split. I cut some of that commentary out because it felt more like speculating. I mention this to say, that how the housework is divvied does impact her ability to work if she is the one taking on those roles. I should have spoken more about this in the end, and glad that you mentioned it.

wow, this was a rough one. mostly because i kept thinking of how many other little lies from the wife turned into the big lie of ignoring that amount of debt. if my partner was that frivolous with Both our money, i'd have to either go to couple's therapy or i'd be out of there. hopefully they were able to get the help they needed behind the scenes.
i wish that instead of another vacation where they have more opportunity to spend money, they were given an amount off their debt. that would've been much more encouraging than another obstacle of spending/the possibility of spending. especially considering her lie being "those vacation things cost 3x the price i told you". on the other hand, and most likely the intention of this gift, it's an opportunity to keep yourself in check and see how much you save compared to last vacation. hopefully this helped work long term, the wife seems to be the one who has the hardest time (probably because she was the one causing most of the issues). hopefully she was able to get her dog rescue back in working order without all that debt hanging over their heads.
great video as always, loving your coverage of these eps! 💖

Dog owner here. How much a dog eat depends on what type of breed you have and the age of your dog. Our boy hardly ate anything when he became 15 years old. Next is what type of food you give to your dog, the good guality ones are expensive, but you can buy them in a big batch and it'll last for a while. What type of breed do you have, if you bought a pure breed with a certificate, it'll be expensive as hell. Then there're the visits to the vet. If your dog isn't suitable for specific kind of weather, you'll need to buy some kind of dog coat to protect the dog from cold. And if you want to do some dog shows, it will cost more money. If you'll gone for a while and can't take your dog with you, you need someone to do it for you, in the worst case, you'll need to hire someone. So yeah, animals are expensive.

About 10 years ago (I was in my early 20s and didnt have any credit.) I had to buy a car. It was 5k and the interest rate was in the 20s. My boyfriend (brand new at the time) begged me to let him just pay it but I felt like I'd be taking advantage. After months of not making any headway I finally agreed to allow him to pay it and I'd pay him back. The amount was the same if not more than when I first started. I paid him back (with reasonable interest) and I'll be forever grateful. 10 years later and we're still together. That man saved me in so many ways.

I dont currently have a dog, my senior passed away earlier this year; but I do have rescue rats and can say what an average ish senior dog bill looks like. I average right now around 100$ a month generally, without vet bills/sick rats lol- that is bedding and food currently, and putting whatever is left aside for their vet fund. Ive spent in the last 3 months around 1200$ getting all of my 10 rats seen and treated for URI- including their followup.
I had a 15 year old min pin. He ate a mix of kibble and wet/fresh foods at the end of his life, but he was on the farmers dog before. It was definitely around 2 to 3 hundred dollars a month, with an added 50 or so dollars for his medication for arthritis.
My main question is: shes not actually tracking anything. The dogs do seem healthy, but 600$ a month is kind of a lot without an additional information. Its not the most Ive heard people spending, especially if your pet is on a specialized diet or is in medication/needs blood work more regularly.

This covers one large bag of dog food from Blue Buffalo, which is a more expensive brand ($70 a bag vs $30 from cheaper brands), and random treats like sardines, Greek yogurt, canned pumpkin, etc. I mentioned the cost of the bags dog food because even with an expensive brand I’m only spending total $100 a month. I don’t know how you would rack up to 600 unless you were taking care of 10 to 12 dogs.

I spend $100 a month feeding and caring for 3 dogs. $20 every month and a half on the cat, and $ 80 a month on the rabbit. During spring and summer I do but flea and tick medicine which totals about $600 a year but worth it to not have fleas. $30 a year on worm meds for them all.

Have you considered watching or reacting to Ramit Sethi’s show or TH-cam episodes ( I Will Teach You to Be Rich or Money for Couples)?
He does similar reviews of couples financial plans but they’re much longer episodes - he really approaches from a place of inclusivity and empathy, which I appreciate!

This perspective very much highlights the way generation X was raised vs. how things are now. Shame, public ( like neighbors are going to tell mom if they see you step out of line) fear of shame , were all part of growing up. The newfangled thinking you so eloquently discuss is as foreign to some of us as the tactic of shame used in the show is to you. Just an older lady perspective on the “ why’s” of Gail’s tactics.

Aside from our house which we're paying off early, the only thing I ever "finance" is vacation, which I pay in 3 installments with my debit card. I LOVE making that last payment so I don't have to think about it anymore. If we had the amount of credit card debt that these people have, I'm sure I'd never sleep. This is so anxiety inducing, oh my goodness.

My household has five pets (a dog and four cats). I’m a vet tech and get a good discount for their food but monthly costs for them are probably like $300 total (for food, treats, litter, etc.) in 2024 money. I don’t know how many pets this couple is fostering of course, or how big the dogs are, but $600 for just food does seem like a lot…

Each of my dogs (2) eat a 110$ bag of dog food every 1.5 months, one dog takes medication that is 332$ a month. Keep in mind this is 2024 inflation pricing and not what i'd pay in 2009 but i can afford my large dogs and their expenses. but dogs especially when they have complex needs are expensive.

I wanted to speak to your comment…”you can’t get into 73k in debt without willful negligence” and while that seems to be the case with this family, here in the US it’s quite easy to get into that much debt from a medical condition. While that is unlikely in Canada, medical debt is quite common here and accounts for 66% of all bankruptcies filed.
As for the animal rescues…I do foster animals and will aid other fosters with high medical bills, the cost are factored into our budget and I have it to spend. I’ve not watched the whole of the video but I will say that if you have a special needs animal under medical care, those bills can far exceed $600 and I don’t just mean in 2024. Though I wish this lady had not put her family at risk and sought other rescues and vet clinics for assistance with the cost of her rescues.

I have so many thoughts on this. I think far too much blame was put on the wife. Having been in her shoes with a husband who takes ZERO part in finances takes the stress level of it to a whole new level. Did she do wrong? Yes. 100% and I have a whole lot of thoughts on that too. And I think she learned more from this than he did. But I find his inaction up until this point far worse. And her complaining about him always wanting to talk about it now that he's involved? I would bet my paycheck she's talked herself blue in the face to get him involved and he wanted no part of it. So now that he's finally involved, she doesn't want to hear it from him like he's some savior putting their finances to right. Maybe if he had been a partner from the get go things wouldn't have gotten as bad and she would have had someone to help hold her accountable. And his secret?! My dude, get your butt up early in the AM and go for a run, lift some weights. Blaming his wife for his inaction just goes to show how awful he is. It really goes to how they got in this situation to begin with and how she carries far more of what should be their shared responsibilities than what he does.

It's nice that the husband is very on-board with the challenge. It is the positive side of a masculine trait to see a challenge, accept it and run with it. I hate how the wives in these show types are always so anti-challenge accepted. It's as if we women aren't able to accept challenges and try our best or something. Very discouraging on her part and other women like her. I am so on the husband side to accept this with good grace and at least do your best. By showing you care, you get he most out of it. I do hope they pay it all off and they get their prizes. It feels amazing to get that second or third chance at life and win it.
BTW, my inner ASD brain loves how organized and gun-ho the husband is with his files and documents. Makes me so happy. It's hard to explain to non-divergent people the joy I get seeing such an organized office.
