    Love the comment about using "lower end parts" because they'll open up riding to others who normally couldn't or wouldn't. It's all about the experience!

    I love that you are breathing new life into older bikes. Just because they are not the latest tech does not take away from the quality of the past. Great hobby and you should be very proud of your rebuilds.

    I have wanted to start a "fix-it" channel for a long time now, seeing your videos are very inspiring.The ride video I think is a great idea every so often, between 5-10 videos. Channel updates, project background updates, general channel related vlogging basically. BikeBlogger is a great example of this and a good channel. Keep it up man!

    Nice trails and a lovely looking bike. :-)
    As a poor person. I always built my own bikes. The old parts, particularly 26, wheels, frames and forks is a really cheap way to get into and stay on bikes. Marzochi forks are always a good cheap long lasting fork.
    I have an old rockshox judy xc fork. That sits in a box. Occasionally put on a bike. Now and then. Well over 10.000 mile on it. Managed to pick up some mint condition beautiful 26" mavic crossmax SLR's for a third of original price. And an old marin quad Tara frame for less than £100. Powder coated black..:-)
    The retro stuff is pretty awesome.
    Now I could go and buy a £4000 bike if I wanted. But still search around eBay and build myself.
    Still on 26" wheels though.

    Old bikes and mid/low range components still can bring nice ride experiences. Not always this is related with brands or models. A rebuild like this it's related to ride feelings, not competition nor those adrenalinic videos of riders doing big jumps on a firetrack...

    Frame should be fine with that fork. I put a big marzochi fork on a xc hardtail with even more rake & had no problem or cracks from slamming 20 foot jumps & 6 foot drops to flat for years. These types of setups were very common/popular in the early 2000's and I never saw a cracked frame with this type of set up except on an off brand like a mongoose.

    Love it! I restored my 2004 Orange SebZero (that I was about to sell for probably little to nothing), it probably actually cost more than buying a new HT but was so rewarding and worth it - totally get it, great end result.

    I own a Cannondale Super V 900 and bought it in 1998. After all these years of mountainbiking everywere i still ride my Super V to my work and back. The suspension is still orjginal and the other stuff is upgraded.
    I was thrilled to see how you build this awsome bike from the beginning.
    My FOX Vanilla R is original and hopefully it stays this way.There aren't a lot of rear shox around anymore.

    I love the looks of that bike. I have an old Gary Fisher full suspension from 98. I couldn’t afford to upgrade it or buy a new one but wanted to ride. I decided to buy a Schwinn Axum from Walmart. The frame has really modern geometry but the components are cheap. I just fix and upgrade stuff as it breaks and Now I have more fun than I did with my Old one. Plus it got me back out on the trails at minimal cost.

    I bought a older super V some one had their car towed and needed money and I bought a bike for 100 bucks cash. My friend had the newest latest bike gear and wanted to race me. We showed up to a full mountainbike race and I told his wife I was going to smoke him. I ended up wining the bike race by eleven minutes. Gave the bike away after that. Thanks David

    This is so relatable, I finished my old skool build, a very modified Carrera full suss, decent air fork and shock, took it to our local trails with the same see what falls off mentality.. nothing, still in one piece
    21 years ago when the bike come out i could not afford it, I bought that my frame for £4 and the rest from spares ...it's alot of fun : )

    I swapped out an SR Suntour fork for a Manitou Markhor straight steer 100mm air fork and it has been fantastic. I agree with you that finding a quality straight steer fork for 27.5 is a real challenge. I really loved your build video. I find the whole powder ocating procesws to be fascinating and you can't argue with the results. Looking forward to great builds in the future.

  • @mediasucks
    @mediasucks 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Just FYI.
    With that 49mm headtube you're not limited to straight 1-1/8 budget forks. You can install the Works 2 degree ZS49-EC49 angle set that will allow you to install any modern fork with a tapered steerer. The EC49 lower cup sits external below the headtube, it does raise the stack 10mm up front and the effective slackening is 2.5 degrees as a result.

    • @davidmeloni8282
      @davidmeloni8282 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      2.5 degrees from 10mm??
      I went from a 100mm to 120mm fork (so stack +20mm) and the HT angle only switched by 1.4 degrees.

    • @mediasucks
      @mediasucks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidmeloni8282 2 degrees with the angle set and an extra 0.5 degree with the EC49's 10mm thick external lower headset cup.

    There are good cheap suntour air forks with a straight steerer out there, There is the raidon and the epixon. Good entry level air forks, and they can be internally adjusted between 80 and 140mm of travel.... They go for around 150 - 200 bucks.

    I love this type of video, bring an older bike back to its former glory. I've done this myself, I did it with a 2001 Gt avalanche 2.0 I loved the frame and the bike but I felt like it was missing that little extra bit. So a lot (more than I'm willing to admit) of money and trying to get parts to my house, I have one killer bike on my hands. I also love how different age groups look at moding out these older bikes, some will say its a good idea and some will say its a huge waste of time and money. but at the end of the day if you like the bike what anybody else says about it doesn't matter. also love the great and quality content.

  • @robinrai4973
    @robinrai4973 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm not sure if it applies to the XCM, but with the cheaper Suntour air forks you can convert them to an oil bath and make them really quite competent! All the dampers are swappable too! I think even the lowers! In the future I would look for a Suntour Raidon - they're straight tubed and are super affordable air forks, if I recall mine a few years ago cost 40 pounds!

    The super v was one of my favorite bikes. I still have a 1998 that the only original part is the main frame. I put a swingarm from a Jekyll on it with a fox float rear shock to give it more travel. If you google uber v stuff should pop up what people did. Your bike looks great

    You've mentioned about chinese forks and I've been using one a year I think, I've even been in Kasina Bike Park (Poland) and used this fork with a bike I rode. The fork has 130mm bend, air chamber 60-120 psi, 32mm slider, width rebound adjustment, straight tube and it's made fully from aluminum. The fork brand is Himalo. I've had one strange episode with it thou - after fork repeatedly bend with high frequency (when I rode on some rocks and roots down hill) the shock blocked for a moment, but I released some rebound and used brunox and it was fine then. Anyway great work with the V bike, very elegant built :) regards

    Yeah id say though id agree with them on the bottom bracket you can pick up a pair of second hand cranks for a decent price or go to clench so its more rebuildable. That would save money in the future. But being said, if you have a S-taper laying around throw it in they are like tanks TBH. But I wouldn't go out of my way for it.

      I rebuilt a 2001 f500 and I found the fork on Amazon. Manitou had one also for 26 and 27.5.

      Of course the reason why I put a RockShox Fork on mine because the headshok is shot. You know Finding seals for the head shock is damn near impossible nowadays. Or any old Cannondale with fatty head shocks and or the jekylls.

      It's on Amazon right now for $295 and it's an air fork with lockout, rim brake and disc brake mounts. Rockshox Recon silver.

    i like these videos! probably doesn't make sense to do them as much as restoration videos, but it's nice to hear your thoughts on your builds. also is interesting to learn your process as someone who's a bit younger but has very similar interests in bike building. i still remember how long i was deliberating over purchasing a $60 dollar torque wrench. was well worth it in the end. fingers crossed that this also turns into a frame building channel :D

    A 'Project Ride' is a great idea. I really enjoyed seeing this follow-up having watched the rebuild video. Interesting to hear of your experience and your comments and thoughts. Any bike, old or brand new, that puts a smile on someone's face on the trail is better than a bike in landfill. Keep up the good work and best of luck with this channel!

    Think you'd get a tapered fork to fit that as it's internal headset, just need to run an external lower cup

    Sorry! Picked up a polished Jekyll swing arm off eBay about 3 months ago. Was on the hunt for two years. Want to finish my UberV build. Got a complete Jekyll too I might sell.

    I have a 1997 cannondale v Gears. Don't need paint. The Paint is original bright yellow. I'll be copying your built Break mount. Gears I like 2x12 or 2x11. I need it to go on Greenway small changes in mid/high gears.
