The epilogue to Spyro 3 says "Thank you for playing, we'll miss you!" and it honestly hits me in the feels, I miss you too Spyro, you are a dead franchise now my little purple friend

If only the story wasn't hijacked so many times, Spyro's worst hurtle is that the timeline is all over the place. I specifically remember a picture of an adult purple dragon on the back pages of my Game manual. I assume that was Spyro. But we never get to see that ending, cuz the game changed hands so many damn times. They need to compile all the games, and start weeding. Sertain plots have to be cut simply because thy don't mesh and / or contridict. Even the style choices: switching from mid-evil European dragons to Chinese dragons. If you are going to have both, you must separate the two regions. Spyro can't originate in two different time lines.
I actually really loved Dawn of the Dragon, not only just because you could FINALLY fly, but also for the added dynamic of having two playable dragons. Spyro and Cynder were awesome together and I remember I actually teared up when she said I love you at the end of the game and you thought they had both died. Of course it isn't like the original trilogy, but the plot of it and the depth and the total increase in gameplay and dialogue I thought made it incredible. (Flying of course was amazing I mean I always remembered when I was little wanting NOTHING MORE than for Spyro to be able to fly, so when I saw this game and it looked like you could I actually gasped and the kid in me went HOLY MOTHERFUCKING SHIT YES)

Personally, I absolutely love the Legend of Spyro trilogy. It was a ton of fun, and I loved the crap out of it. Not to mention, the fact that Dawn of the Dragon was TWO PLAYER game me and my friend a chance to play a Spyro game together. It was a ton of fun. I can agree with everything she says, but I'll always love the Legend of Spyro, as well as the original trilogy. They both super fun, in much different ways.
I've played all the old spyro games and I loved TLOS trilogy the most. That reboot was so refreshing and completely underrated! I honestly think that anyone who says that they prefer the original ps1 series, simply for nostalgia reasons actually had a chance to play all the old games back to back, they would come to appreciate either both equally for what they were in their time or the Legend of Spyro a hell of a lot more. For me personally I appreciated the effort the creators went to in making a Spyro storyline that was so in depth and emotionally capturing, while keeping the family appropriate, fun for all style approach. I can forgive the combat for being repetitive because, even though it was fairly weak attempt at the system, I just went from only being able to head butt or flaming enemies, to ground and air melee combos and the power of four elements!!! Like, that was a big jump concerning Spyros abilities over the course of two consoles. In fact when I first played A New Beginning, I was actually surprised how much more there was to learn in the Ignitis training tutorial. It was still simple but the added variety was all it really needed. The voice acting was spot on, it was like the voice actors actually gave a shit about the storyline and the lines they needed to say to contribute to it. The soundtrack is breath taking and it honestly amazes me just how much they went all out on it. And while I guess Malefor (the dark master) and his dark armies kinda had a Sauron (also the dark master) and HIS dark armies from LOTR rip off feel to it, I still felt the main villain was one to be feared and needed to be defeated asap. Overall they were all great. But the ps2 trilogy took everything that Spyro started out from and upgraded the fuck out of him and gave gamers a reason to like him more than just because he's a little dragon.
I doubt I'm the only one here who does this but I still play my original Spyro trilogy even though I'm 17, honestly I don't think many games new or old match up to the original three
I can't help but love the legend of spyro. Though sparx was definately annoying. It was such a good game series and fun to play many times. Also you failed to mention in dawn of the dragon how spyro can actually FLY now rather than glide AND the co-op with cinder, different move elements for each of them, and the whole purple dragon powers thing.
Honestly I grew up with the legend of spyro. Hell I have all three games, and I have a really close emotional bond with it. It also helped inspire me as an artist. I also love the classics but the legend has a special place for me. Also not a fan of Skylanders...
+Rayven Chance I'm exactly the same, I love TLOS but I also really like the originals. Although I dropped the art in favour of becoming a programmer. I'm going to get Dawn of the Dragon (my favoruite TLOS imo) for the Xbox 360 at some point (hopefully). Oh and yeah Skylands sucks so bad it's not even funny. Why did they have to destroy the Spyro series?
Tlos dawn of the dragon is simply amazing in my opinion. Beautiful levels, free flying, amazing music, deep combat, epic story... One of my favorite games ever

At 16:54, I cried... The words that spyro spoke, to me, were the words of knowing the series wouldn't last. It was like spyro was tired of all this adventure stuff knowing he would no longer be loved by most of the fans that loved him at that time... And when that deer thing (sorry only played the 1st and 3rd original spyro games as a kid, trying to find where I can get the 2nd game, but I'm pretty sure that's where she is from) said for him to take a break and watch the show, it was like she was saying, "it's ok spyro, as much as we want it to be back like it use to be, we can't do anything, we can only wait until someone comes and returns us to our formal glory...."
While Skylanders is a really great idea on it's own, like many others, I feel as though it's not a Spyro game. I would really love to see another Legend of Spyro game be released, I know that it was meant to just be a trilogy, but it ended with me wanting so much more. There are so many things that can be done with that series. The world can be expanded on, it can explore Spyro and Cynder's relationship now that they're together, and there are lots of possibilities for where the story can go. What I think would be really interesting is at one point Spyro begins to despair; he just wants to live out his life, but the world always seems to be depending on him to save it and he begins to question whether he would choose to become the purple dragon if he was given the choice. That can be topped off with Dark Spyro's presence, which while I know would be a lot like The Two Thrones, would be a really fascinating. I always did think that he was not elaborated on as much as he should have been.
I even have an idea for another trilogy. Following the defeat of Malefor, the Dragon Realms seem to be at peace, until whole communities begin to be destroyed by a new race: OURS! Spyro and Cynder both bring it upon themselves to stop the humans before they launch an attack on Warfang, but along the way, they meet a mysterious young man who offers to help them against his kind. While initially uncertain whether or not he can be trusted, Spyro and Cynder begin to form a strong sense of companionship with the human. After traveling across the realms, fighting humans and finding a cool sword for the human character (who I haven't thought a up name for yet), they repel the human armies in a massive siege against Warfang. Following the siege, during which they kill a high ranking member of said army (who appears frequently throughout the game), Spyro and Cynder's human friend vanishes, and they decide that it is time to take the fight directly to humanity. In the second game, Spyro and Cynder follow the humans back to their homeland, only be discovered and overwhelmed by the enemy. However, when they come to, they find that they have been rescued by their human friend, who joins them across the human lands in order to cripple their empire and remove the tyrannical emperor from power. As they form alliances with elves and dwarfs (both of which have been forced into servitude by the humans), Spyro and Cynder eventually learn their human friends backstory, and why humanity has declared war on the dragon race. Millenia ago, the humans waged war against the dragons, only to be defeated and have their society shattered. Now split in nomadic clans, some craved for vengeance, including the clan leader (and father) of the human character. However, at the age of seven, the human hero, knowing that another war with the dragons would be suicide, left his home and united other clans with the promise of a brighter future for all mankind. Unfortunately, the hero's father objected to the plan, resulting in his death at his son's hands (yes, this guy was a child prodigy). After rebuilding the empire and making himself emperor, however, his brother, who followed his fathers beliefs, overthrew him and drew him into exile, hence the empire's current state. It is also revealed that the emperor plans to open a gate between the world and The Shadow Realm, believing that he can unleash an army of demons and destroy all of humanity's enemies. While Spyro, Cynder and the emperor's brother defeat him, they are unable to prevent him from opening the gate releasing a legion of demons that desire to destroy all life in the world. In order to stop them, the human hero reclaims his title as emperor, and tells Spyro and Cynder to return to the Dragon Realms and convince the dragons to lend aid, knowing that the only way the stop this new threat is for them to stand together. I've only got ideas for the final game, but you can surmise what it is about. I do have the idea that the Demon King (or whatever other name you can come up with), the leader of all the demons, was actually behind the first war between humanity and dragons, as well as the one who told the human hero's brother about the Shadow Realm(think of it like Reaper indoctrination), and all of the events of the previous games were all part of a master plan do that he could open the game between the two worlds and destroy everything. This will probably never happen, but I think this could be a great idea and hope that most of you will agree with me.
Honestly I thought the newer Trilogy, Dawn Of The Dragon had a very saddening ending, which made me want to play more. Hoping that there was more. With the line of "when a dragon dies" I knew something was gonna happen to him after I finished the game. Honestly, skylanders ruined it. Spyro is now just a face, with a greedy wanting for cash. I now have *NO* respect for skylanders, ruining one of my favorite game characters. I really hope they make a new Spryo, and im fine with whatever version of style they give us! As long as its nothing like Skylanders or Enter the dragonfly. If not, I think maybe the fans can do something about it.

All those Skylanders on the shelves and all... They're *everywhere* and yet if you mention anything about the first 3 Spyro games to a kid now adays, they'll have no clue what you're talking about.T^T
I taught swim lessons to elementary schoolers, and (this is before i ever touched skylanders, i just knew spyro is in it) I talked to this kid who loved skylanders but not only didnt know spyro was a skylander character at all, but was positive i was lying to him about spyro having his own games. to me, thats equally as sad as kids only knowing the clone wars cartoons, and not the rest of star wars (which is a lot, based on my conversations with kids)
im probably one of the 20 kids who knows what spyro used to be and turned into and to tell the truth I loved basically every game I had of spyro even bad ones but skylanders, well I played it once I don't dare even look at the case any more its just a disgrace its built more for teaching someone to play a game probably even simpler than that! and although I do slightly act like a game critic I am a huge fan of dragons and almost always love any game that involves not just plain killing one but skylanders has at least 8 dragons and I hate every one of them.it takes a lot to make me hate a dragon ( don't believe me? check my name)
Have you noticed that as you progress in the game, LOS, NB, Spyro's appearance in the cutscenes changes slightly, in the beginning you can hardly tell the scales apart, but in the ending one, you can see every last scale... and I LOVED IT!!! It was, to me, a representation of Spyro growing and improving as a character.
This is one of things that inspires me to start a new gaming company that will bring back old game aspects into the new gaming era and maybe recreate dead gaming series'es. Including Spyros. Now to start learning how to program at the Age of 13! And I've only played one Spyro game, and I loved it more looking at the game than I did almost playing Skylanders or any new gen game!
I'm glad you have an appreciation for the older titles! If you want to go back before the original Playstation I highly recommend you try the Donkey Kong Country series from the Super Nintendo days of old :)
Belive it or not I'm actually 12 I remeber playing Super Mario 64 and Mario Paint alot. And some random SNES games aswell. Along with me playing Pokemon Red, Simcity 2000, and trying to find PC games from the 90's era of gaming, oh yeah and also one NES game I think. A normal 12 year old would care about graphics, new consoles, the console wars, and other matters. But not me.
Very cool... there's a lot of great games out there hiding in the dust and cobwebs of time. I'm glad you are keeping an open mind and that the graphics don't have to be the latest and greatest. You'll have a much better gaming experience that way!
I sometimes despise modern games and do anything I can to get my hands on a old fashioned game. When I play a modern age game, I only feel like I'm just doing something for the time being and just that it's boring ('Minecraft is NOT one of those kind of games for me.) When I play old games from my brothers age of gaming which is in the '90s, I feel nogstalgic and plus enteratined. No matter the graphics.
same here i'm 13 and I always like playing my older sisters games I don't really care about modern games though sometimes I do play them but I always love games from before my time I think I still even have a game cube
I played the first spyro game recently and cried tears of joy when I saw it. I have the first two skylander games, and the feeling of just platforming made me feel so nostalgic. I have eternal night, and although I've never played it, I don't think I'll have the same feeling as I did in the insomniac era.
Only the original trilogy and Hero's Tail are legit Spyro in my eyes, the new trilogy just isn't the same at all, too similar to the games/movies it took inspiration from, and the celebrity voices ruin it more and make it over-the-top commercialized. What made it so fun was the simplicity of the gameplay and the mini-games and all the fun levels; updating it to have a lot of combat moves doesn't resonate with me and kind of over-complicates things and changes the atmosphere too much. I can definitely relate to the frustration of the Nintendo small console gameplay, I remember one day getting so upset that I had to quit the Rhinocs one! Thank you for doing these videos on Spyro, I've always wanted to know the historical aspect!
like she said i think the final dawn of the dragons was ok but you got my cote on the other two, combat got old before the end of the ice zone, so basically I was bored for the other half of the game until the lightning knight and Cynder bosses
i absolutely adore the legend of spyro trilogy (DOTD in particular holy crap i love it so much) but skylanders...really? it's a joke. personally i think a bloody and more mature spyro game would be interesting, one that takes place when he's older or something, idk. the original insomniac games will always be my favourite though, i had a lot of awesome memories with them. thank you for making these videos, you've just gained another subscriber ^.^
Spyro the dragon, spyro a hero's tail, skylanders, legend of spyro. The four games lived together in agony, but everything changed when the skylanders attacked. Only the owner, master of all for games could stop them, but when the fans asked him to stop, he continued.

I must admit each time after the original Insomniac trilogy I kept cringing waiting for the other series to be revealed... I have so much nostalgia and love for the originals since they were my childhood :)
Also I was thinking they could remake the older Spyro games but with modern graphics and more things to do in it like more mini-games, more interesting characters to help out, and heck even add Cynder in there as a playable character. Like the game could ask if you're a boy or a girl and you could be one or the other, or maybe you could even switch between the two like in the Dawn of the Dragon. Now THAT would be something I would love to see.

Spyro the Dragon was my childhood along with Crash Bandicoot. I'm 16 now, but I was introduced to the original series of both games and have been playing them since they came out. They never get old. I did kind of like the new Crash games better than the new Spyro games, but the first three Spyro games will always be my favorite and my very first video games. I bought every singe Spyro game until Skylanders came out, I never played it and I never will. I figured out it wasn't about Spyro before they released and I was very upset. I absolutely agree on Spyro enter the dragonfly, that game had terrible glitches. I could access levels without even getting the required number of dragon flies, making the game too easy. Thank you for doing this retrospective! I look forward to some more :).
I'm not a Classic Spyro player; I started out playing the Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning when I started High School. And I was taken away by the story. After hearing there were a total of three Legend of Spyro titles, I made it my mission to obtain and complete all three of them. I didn't complete it until I opened up Dawn of the Dragon on Christmas of last year, 2013 (yeah, took WAY too fricking long!) And boy, I fell in love with it. Now, after watching these videos and learning about the original Spyro games and those that followed, I now have a TOP favorite and LEAST favorite, both of which are probably VERY predictable: My top favorite: The Legend of Spyro trilogy. It was the very first of the franchise I played, and it had the best storyline, which is what I live for in gaming. In fact, I still to this day wish they would continue with the story of this trilogy because it was so good. I mean, there were several different ways they could have taken it: have Malefor escape from the crystal prisonin the Core of the Realms, for example (Several excellent possibilities are all over FanFiction.net!) My only complaint was in the annoyance of the quick-time events you went through to defeat the Golem in Dawn of the Dragon. But hey, most gamers hate quick-time events... Moving on... My least favorite: Skylanders. I know, big surprise, right? My reasons: pretty much identical to the reasons stated in this last video. In my opinion, Skylanders just butchered Spyro. How Skylanders killed the Spyro franchise: ---alter his appearance, making him look completely ridiculous: check. ---limit his moves to just two (3 if you get his soul gem) after Dawn of the Dragon having a variety of attacks: check ---have a completely cruddy story that makes absolutely no sense when compared to previous games and have Spyro not even be the fricking main character or have his presence not have any relevance to the actual story: CHEEEECK!!!! My apologies to any Skylander fans out there. This is just my opinion.
but still dont think any less of me because im young. youd be surprised at what i can do. but im just getting used to game designing. the closest ive gotten to it is scratch, the game making site, and i dont really get the mechanics of scratch. but if i can get some people to help and some tips for game designing, i just might be able to pull it off.
The very first game I played was given to me on December 25th 2006 a few months after the legend of Spyro a new beginning, I played through the whole series and loved it and had an emotional bond with it. Then Skylanders came out and it broke me mentally for a few weeks, I cried when I played skylanders, and I'm very very very VERY pissed off because of this, more could have been done with the Spyro series and they fucked it up.
zombieschair Agreed. I really liked the original three, but I absolutely LOVED the Legend of Spyro trilogy. They weren't perfect, but they improved greatly with each game. I feel that if they would have continued with the Dawn of the Dragon style, the series had the potential to some day be counted among the greats like Zelda and Mario. It's potential was left untapped with the birth of Skylanders and the loss of that epic, movie-like game play.
zombieschair Clearly, you have never played Zelda ^_^ Spyro is a fantastic franchise, but the Zelda games are undefeated champions of the video game industry. Even the worst among them is typically considered a gaming master piece and revolutionary for it's time. Please, for your own sake, play some Legends of Zelda ^_^ I'd recommendeither 'Wind Waker', 'A Link to the Past', or 'A Link Between Worlds' for a newcomer into the series. This channel also has a complete retrospective (just like what she did with Spyro here) in it's video library of the entire Zelda franchise if you'd like to learn something about it first.
I've played a fair few Spyro games in my time but the Legend of Spyro series will remain my favourite. I was always an RPG type person and not so much a platformer (I enjoyed Paper Mario more then any other Mario game). Had a good story, good characters (though I agree that the constant changing of voice actors for Sparx was a bit suss. I mean in three games he went from being voice by David Spade to Billy West and finally to Wayne Brady. Aside from that, LOS had characters I felt more emotionally invested in then any other spyro series. I admittedly play Skylanders myself but I will remain still one of those who question's Spyro's appearance change and 'inclusion' (or lack thereof) in the first game. On some terms that could be grounds for false advertisement.
I really enjoy these retrospectives and will eagerly anticipate the release of your next project. It is refreshing to see someone who has taken a lot of time to make their videos with quality and accuracy in mind. they did it with the ratchet and clank trilogy so its possible a reboot would need to be handled carefully and many aspects to be considered (gameplay, story, characters, game mechanics, marketing, age appeal, etc) if someone does it right it, brings back the classic spyro game style into the modern era of gaming, it could be a success and start a new series fun fact - the voice actor of songebob voiced spyro in the original games, in enter the dragonfly, you can hear the similarity between spyro and spongebob bit of a mouthful of a reply but bugger it
Insomniac never owned any of the original spyro games we probably won't ever see an hd remake of the original three spyro games or crash(Since naughty dog never owned crash either).
They're re releasing the original crash trilogy this year on PS4, and rumor has it that if that collection does well they'll most likely do the same with Spyro.
In my opinion while I've been playing games for almost all of my life I loved Skylanders. First off the collection aspect is well executed. The writing, I felt, had stuff for young audiences and mature audiences to enjoy. It also ties in with the end of Dawn Of The Dragon as most of the original skylanders' back story mention Malefor. And Cynder alongside Dark Spyro appear in the games. Also the soundtrack is gorgeous and, in the second game, simplicity was scrapped as there was difficulty settings were implemented alongside Nightmare Mode which will allow Chompies to have the ability to plow through your Skylanders if you dont kill them before they kill you
Being a lifelong spyro fan, the ps2 reboot broke my heart when they released enter the dragonfly and i was never much enamoured by the legend of spyro trilogy but it saved the series in a way ... Skylanders is a screaming nosedive
The concept is clever for skylanders i admit, but i really didnt like their new incarnation of spyro for the game, he looks awful and isnt even a main feature, just a gimmick to help sell the game
i would have loved that to happen, but i knew it wouldnt, the spyro franchise has been pretty much bled dry and i personally think it should have ended with the ps1 titles

Random Vids When did you figure that out? I figured out pretty quickly of that conclusion when they asked me 60 bucks to buy additional add ons which the game doesn't need to play the fucking game.
This whole retrospective is pretty crazy for me, since I treasured the original Spyro trilogy when I was younger but my little brother, who is an entire decade younger than I am, loves Skylanders.
So, the best game of the series is undoubtedly game #1 "Spyro the Dragon" (1998). Well it's my favorite at least. The TLoS series had a bit of crud gameplay, very repetitive combat encounters. However I just loved the graphics, cutscenes, and story. And nobody was better suited to play Spyro's voice other than Elijah Wood. I've honestly never heard of Shadow Legacy until now, which looks interesting. A Hero's Tail (which I've also never played for some reason) looks VERY interesting, and therefor I shall begin playing today!
My favourite is Spyro 2, followed by 3, 1 and the a hero's tail. The LoS games were quite good in my opinion. I didn't really consider them to be true Spyro games but I enjoyed them for what they were.
The Legend of Spyro definitely took our lovable perfect dragon to an amazing turn, in my opinion! Dawn of the Dragon was actually my first Spyro game and then I went backwards with all the Spyro games which REALLY confused me. Luckily, this little series you made helped it make sense. I was probably 8 when I started playing it and it really caught my attention for a love of video games. Skylanders made me excited just because it had Spyro and Cynder in it which really disappointed me when they failed to make me want to play it anymore. I like to collect just those two and the other Skylander dragons and see if I could make a story of my own with Spyro, but he's just a classic that I cannot change. I wish they'd continue The Legend of Spyro or make a Spyro movie, but someone really needs to make a good comeback for him and Cynder both. Yes, I admire Cynder in TLOS!! Even though at first I thought she was a robot... don't ask.. xD But I feel TLOS had a better plot-line to the story of Spyro than any of the other games. If you ask me, I'd say that that whole new version of Spyro when TLOS was released really made the Spyro turn for the better. He's more of a hero now than he ever was and I love him for that! I still play Spyro, even now! To me, he'll never get old. Maybe when I'm older, I can help with Spyro's comeback. It's a crazy dream but that doesn't mean I can't try, right? Lol we'll find out in 10 years! Maybe people are going to surprise us with more Spyro, bigger and better than ever! That would really make me happy! :)

I've only played the first three Spyro games (by Insomniac). I loved them! They are super lighthearted and easy to love. I am going to look for them now to replay on my PS3! That being said, I personally like the idea of a darker, more mature Spyro game. I think taking the idea of a young dragon and showing how he saves his species from a 'realistic,' gory, intense point of view would be awesome. It would definitely be for an adolescent/adult audience, and I think it would be amazing if done correctly. Granted, I don't know what "done correctly" would be, but it would be something that I would try. That idea reminds me of the bootleg power rangers video... I must disagree. Legend of Spyro is good trilogy. I really liked it. Sure it is different in so many ways, but it has good story and very good characters. It is easy and short, but as a complete trilogy, it works. And this comes from veteran who started PS era with Spyro. Although I did not play most of the games between Year of the Dragon and New Beginning. I understand why many people do not like this trilogy. But I think it takes decisive steps and becomes epic. The final battle is one to best ever in VG.
I haven't played the original Spyro trilogy so I can't compare them to the Legend of Spyro but that's what I grew up playing on the PS2 and I think they're great games.
What I'd REALLY dole out money for is a skyrim-esque RPG in that universe, they put so much effort into creating it and it really matured by the third one.
It was a good series but it had two downsides imo. One she mentioned with the repetitive gameplay, the other is that Krome did what it does best, make incredibly short games. When you can defeat all three games in about 10 hours there is a problem.
I really liked the Legend of Spyro trilogy simply because my cousin likes to play as Cynder and the story was really good and I like combat Spyro. R. I. P. Spyro, you have been replaced by sh*tty Skylanders.
In my opinion when it comes to Skylanders, I have seen so many advertisements for it but upon further research I said, "Why? Why bother spending money on it concerning it has no storyline, and no powerfully memorable characters?" I have the 3 original Spyro games, and countless times people have asked to buy it from me. It goes beyond me simply wanting to keep a favorite game from my childhood. It was THE first game I actually played. When I saw Spyro: A New Beginning on the shelf one day, I bought it and said "From the looks of the description and the graphics, this will be a great game." I wasn't expecting it to be anything like the older ones. I considered The Legend of Spyro trilogy to be a second generation in Spyro, like what happened in a separate universe or something. To be honest, I even came home from school one day, checked the mail and saw there was a vanilla envelope the size of a game case to my father. I brought it in and he said "Happy Birthday" I opened it to see Dawn of the Dragon and the first thing I said after reading the booklet was "FINALLY! After all these years they give him the ability to fly. Like how old is he??" Both the sets struck into my heart and I'm grateful to be able to still have the ability to play the original and the newer ones. And no matter how many times people request it, I am NOT playing Skylanders. My requirements: Good Storyline. I don't care if the graphics are crappy or if they are excellent, if it doesn't have a good story, I am not playing it.
TLoS was ten times better than Skylanders; yes, dawn of the dragon ending was sad, tear provoking and so not what we were used to but, I actually felt sick at the sight of that Spyro concept.
I really gotta thank you for not shitting all over The Legend Of Spyro. I get all the criticism over the combat, but a lot of people mindlessly complain about the top notch story and voice acting. I also wish you could've talked about the cancelled Legend!Spyro movie.

Personally I think Spyro would topple Mario as Nintendo's mascot so long as they use him right and not as a cash cow. I always found Spyro and series characters to have more personality than Mario ones with a few exceptions on both sides (Bentley and Luigi for example)
I want Spyro, Crash, and Banjo & Kazooie in Smashy Bros. Well, I can hope. That, and for another BK game like the original two. What is it with great franchises messing up their own series?
What I think, or hope, will happen is Spyro will be "Rayman'd". Where the main character gets a new game with a load of other characters, Rabbids and Skylanders, and then will eventually be completely pushed out of the picture. After that's happened, the other characters will eventually get overdone and boring, upon which the original character will get a new, great game, Rayman Origins/Legends. Let's hope Spyro gets his Origins/Legends. Also, could you do a retrospective series on MediEvil, Rayman or Abe's Oddysee?
Interesting watch. To be honest, I've never played any Spyro games outside of the original trilogy... and after watching these videos, I think I'll keep it that way! Great video and keep up the good work!
I played the first Spyro games and i really like them. But my favorite Spyro games are the legend of Spyros they have a nice gameplay and have an epic story.
Personally, I think legend of spyro games are pretty good! But the best part is the song that plays during the credits. The last one is my absolute favorite though.

Watching the 3 part video has made me want to revisit the series. I completed Spyro 1 & 2 (for the 4th time) about 3 months ago. I may as well play Spyro 3 (for the 6th time, hahaha). I have Enter the Dragonfly, Heroes Tail and A New Beginning, but I never actually played them properly. Now that i'm on holidays, I may as well finish the series that I own. There were just lying there on my shelf >.
This kinda made me cry because the original 3 Spyro games were my childhood! I got them when I was 4 and im 16 now, I still have the original ps1 games from when I first got them and play them on my ps2. Can't even imagine how many times I've beaten the games cx the GBA games where Spyro and Crash mix, were also me and my friends entertainment while riding the bus to school and back (along with Pokemon and Zelda) I also have Dawn of the Dragon fly... (my little brother likes it) not so much me... It was a gift from my dad, since he also would play the first games :) Spyro will always be special to me cx Hopefully they do someday bring Spyro back (not skylanders) and keep experimenting :3
I will always love the old Spyro games. I was very angry that the Spyro imposter, Skylanders, would try to take the fans away from him and into their trap. I always have loved the Spyro games since I was a kid. I have played his games since the beginning, and will always miss him. For me, once the legend of Spyro came out, it brang me even closer to our purple friend. I wish that the series would have never ended. I loved that series. Although she didn't mention this, they were planning on developing a Spyro movie in 2009, though it was canceled due to the skylanders coming out. For me, that was a total mistake. I would have loved the movie! Skylanders killed our best friend. Luckily though, there are hard core fans, like me, who would do ANYTHING to make the Spyro games come back to life. Right know I am sixteen and I hope that one of the things that I could work on is to make more of the old Spyro games, as well as the legend of Spyro series. For the movie, I am dumbfounded. If they were going to still make the movies or games, they better do it soon. The hardcore fans are getting older and giving up in their friend. I wish to make the games again one day, so that kids of the new age may experience the adventure we have gone through. I believe that the games can come back. It was humans just like us who made the games, so if they did it, why can't we? I will work with all my power to make the next game, but if the fans will still want to play at that time, I do not know. If I, or someone else makes the old games new again, I would never have the words to express what I feel. For know the games are over, but it falls to us, the new generation to continue the games. So I don't know what you will do, but I will fight for my purple, and do everything I can for him, until the end. What will you do?
I love the Spyro games and to be honest I didn't find Enter the Dragonfly a bad game, true the distance between platforms was long and tiring but I still enjoyed it. I've only played Spyro Year of the Dragon (haven't completed it yet, one egg left...damn where is it?), I've also played Enter the Dragonfly (not completed, stuck on levels ect), Spyro a Hero's tail (haven't completed, stuck on levels etc) The only Spyro games I have ever completed are The Legend of Spyro (apart from Eternal Night, stuck on levels again etc) I've also played Skylanders (disappointed with his design) and Skylander's Giants, both are decent games that I have played but still Spyro's design is horrible, and the fact that you can't jump in the game is so lame that Spyro might as well be taken out of the game. Spyro was designed as a young purple dragon that can Jump (cough Skylanders cough), Glide, Fly, Charge and Flame. But after The Legend of Spyro I wanted more Spyro games, It's a shame that the games have been stopped
You know, you can jump in SWAP Force. But it shouldn't bother people that you can't jump in the game. They instead had clever alternatives for it, such as the bounce pads. It's not really even meant to be a platformer. I'm sick and tired of people constantly complaining and whining over Spyro's design. I for one, have no problem with it. I can't see what people dislike about it. I love it. It's his best design yet, in my opinion. I don't think Skylanders killed Spyro, I think it revived him. For the love of God do not bash.

And then came Spyro Reignited Trilogy! 😃😃😃 Toys For Bob KNEW old school Spyro fans were upset with what they did to him in Skylanders, it’s NOT a bad game, it just may not be for you, it’s not for me! I wish there was another Legend of Spyro Game. There was going to be a movie which i would of LOVED to see since i like TLoS Trilogy. But the movie HAD to be cancelled, because of Activision wanted it to steer into another direction. #BringBackTLoS. They should at least make one more LoS game, like about someone bringing back malafor once again, or try to do the movie again. The ending of Dawn of the Dragon made me sad. I knew Cynder loved Spyro when she said it, i started to cry a bit. R.I.P Spyro. WE HATE YOU SKYLANDERS!
This was a fantastic retrospective on the Spyro series. It really changed the way I looked at the games. I actually never finished Dawn of the Dragon. I feel like I should go back and play it, considering everyone's saying it's the best of the trilogy. Thanks for making these videos! :)
I would've liked to see the Skylander characters be used in a Spyro 3 setting, With each character having a unique ability that changes how obstacles are overcame, then also having their own challenges. I grew up with the first 3 Spyro games, and I can say that the series as only gotten worse, none of the following games have had a solid design and game play as the first 3 did. As for myself, I do aspire to be a game developer and if ever given the chance to work with Spyro, I would make sure that they would feel like the first 3 did with taking in bits and pieces of other games.

Hm, I'm almost tempted to try the Legend of Spyro series...but at the same time, it's also contradicting the fact that I kind of liked the idea that there was no distinct recollection of when Spyro met Sparx or how. It was left for you to come up with, albeit it slightly influenced by the little shindig held for the baby dragons and their dragonflies in the fourth game. I personally always thought that since he was such a young dragon, he needed additional help to tell when he was hurt. This seemed to hold up in the fact that none of the other dragons/side, yet depicted as older, characters had a dragonfly, and the fact that several of the older dragons reminded him to keep an eye on him, refer to him whenever you think you're getting hurt, etc (such as what a parent or guardian might say to remind their child to tell someone if they aren't feeling good or get hurt). While it certainly is an interesting concept, I don't think I would consider it my cup of tea.

Ugh... so here we are to the games that I consider to be the worst in the entire Spyro franchise. I strongly dislike TLoS series and outright HATE the Skylanders franchise. TLoS isn't really objectively awful, so I guess you could say that my detest for these games stems mostly from the way they tried to turn Spyro into a big dramatic thing. In my opinion, Spyro was only ever meant to be a lighthearted platformer. Trying to turn Spyro into a huge fantasy epic just doesn't seem right. I'd be like if they tried to turn Ratchet and Clank into a melodramatic story of vengeance. Then there's Skylanders... Mother of God. The way they use Spyro's image to sell the product and then shove him aside and give him no actual purpose is just despicable to a long time fan. And that new design! OH GOD! SPYRO, WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOU!? But both of these games, to me, stink of a focus-testing sort of mindset. For TLoS, it seems like they tried to make it dramatic and dark because that's the only thing they thought would sell, completely disregarding Spyro's lightheartedness. And with Skylanders, they obviously just wanted to trick kids to buying a bunch of overpriced figurines and duping them out of a whole lot of cash. So I particularly hate Skylanders, not only for its abuse of Spyro, but its obvious intent of robbing kids of all their money with the whole "gotta collect em' all!" thing.
I fucking hate and despise skylanders. They murdered spyro. This generation's kids will never experience the real spyro unless they have a older sibling that has the game. *sigh* spyro will be missed.

Nice to see someone give a decent overview of the entire Spyro history without despising the voice acting in The Legend of Spyro. Also, the idea of Spyro's Kingdom was certainly more appealing than selling off Spyro to Activision.
with a new beginning I specifically remember there being distinct differences between the different breaths with the electricity allowing you to move enemies. I remember much of my later game-play was spent dropping enemies in the closest death pit using the electric breath.
I love all Spyros and Skylanders is not a bad game, just because the Spyro that's in it looks "strange"(personally I think it looks ok but take long to get used to).

growing up with the 3 spyro games and never playing the others though i did rent Enter the dragonfly but rarely played it and have little to no memory of it since i also rented ratchet and clank (it's obvious which i played more lol) this was very entertaining to watch and learn about as well as learning that dawn of the dragon was pretty much the last game for the series. you just earned yourself a subscriber, keep up the good work~
I really wish someone could come up with a good revamped version of spyro, sticking more to the originals. the idea of the darker spyro games was nice but I found them too gloomy! Spyro had nice upbeat music and for the most part a bright and cheery atmosphere. I'm sure someone could come up with new worlds and problems for him to tackle in an older style way. Granted the new graphics are nice but honestly I'd rather have a new spyro similar to the first 3 with graphics a little less fancy. I think they could've done something with the whole dragonfly concept but just the way that game was made was wrong. I continue to replay the first 3 because of my dislike for the new ones. I really hope someday it can be brought back in a proper manner.

I specifically remember a picture of an adult purple dragon on the back pages of my Game manual. I assume that was Spyro. But we never get to see that ending, cuz the game changed hands so many damn times.
They need to compile all the games, and start weeding. Sertain plots have to be cut simply because thy don't mesh and / or contridict.
Even the style choices: switching from mid-evil European dragons to Chinese dragons.
If you are going to have both, you must separate the two regions. Spyro can't originate in two different time lines.

I actually really loved Dawn of the Dragon, not only just because you could FINALLY fly, but also for the added dynamic of having two playable dragons. Spyro and Cynder were awesome together and I remember I actually teared up when she said I love you at the end of the game and you thought they had both died. Of course it isn't like the original trilogy, but the plot of it and the depth and the total increase in gameplay and dialogue I thought made it incredible. (Flying of course was amazing I mean I always remembered when I was little wanting NOTHING MORE than for Spyro to be able to fly, so when I saw this game and it looked like you could I actually gasped and the kid in me went HOLY MOTHERFUCKING SHIT YES)

Personally, I absolutely love the Legend of Spyro trilogy. It was a ton of fun, and I loved the crap out of it. Not to mention, the fact that Dawn of the Dragon was TWO PLAYER game me and my friend a chance to play a Spyro game together. It was a ton of fun. I can agree with everything she says, but I'll always love the Legend of Spyro, as well as the original trilogy. They both super fun, in much different ways.

I've played all the old spyro games and I loved TLOS trilogy the most. That reboot was so refreshing and completely underrated! I honestly think that anyone who says that they prefer the original ps1 series, simply for nostalgia reasons actually had a chance to play all the old games back to back, they would come to appreciate either both equally for what they were in their time or the Legend of Spyro a hell of a lot more.
For me personally I appreciated the effort the creators went to in making a Spyro storyline that was so in depth and emotionally capturing, while keeping the family appropriate, fun for all style approach. I can forgive the combat for being repetitive because, even though it was fairly weak attempt at the system, I just went from only being able to head butt or flaming enemies, to ground and air melee combos and the power of four elements!!! Like, that was a big jump concerning Spyros abilities over the course of two consoles. In fact when I first played A New Beginning, I was actually surprised how much more there was to learn in the Ignitis training tutorial. It was still simple but the added variety was all it really needed.
The voice acting was spot on, it was like the voice actors actually gave a shit about the storyline and the lines they needed to say to contribute to it. The soundtrack is breath taking and it honestly amazes me just how much they went all out on it. And while I guess Malefor (the dark master) and his dark armies kinda had a Sauron (also the dark master) and HIS dark armies from LOTR rip off feel to it, I still felt the main villain was one to be feared and needed to be defeated asap.
Overall they were all great. But the ps2 trilogy took everything that Spyro started out from and upgraded the fuck out of him and gave gamers a reason to like him more than just because he's a little dragon.
I doubt I'm the only one here who does this but I still play my original Spyro trilogy even though I'm 17, honestly I don't think many games new or old match up to the original three

I can't help but love the legend of spyro. Though sparx was definately annoying. It was such a good game series and fun to play many times. Also you failed to mention in dawn of the dragon how spyro can actually FLY now rather than glide AND the co-op with cinder, different move elements for each of them, and the whole purple dragon powers thing.

Honestly I grew up with the legend of spyro. Hell I have all three games, and I have a really close emotional bond with it. It also helped inspire me as an artist. I also love the classics but the legend has a special place for me.

+Rayven Chance I'm exactly the same, I love TLOS but I also really like the originals. Although I dropped the art in favour of becoming a programmer. I'm going to get Dawn of the Dragon (my favoruite TLOS imo) for the Xbox 360 at some point (hopefully).

The Legend of Spyro series is the best. IN My OPINION. You may not think this but Spyro takes a very special place in my heart. I ope he gets revived one day.
You know , we never know what future brings , but if AND ONLY IF it comes true , i hope it will be like the first trilogy , i mean like a platforming game

At 16:54, I cried... The words that spyro spoke, to me, were the words of knowing the series wouldn't last. It was like spyro was tired of all this adventure stuff knowing he would no longer be loved by most of the fans that loved him at that time... And when that deer thing (sorry only played the 1st and 3rd original spyro games as a kid, trying to find where I can get the 2nd game, but I'm pretty sure that's where she is from) said for him to take a break and watch the show, it was like she was saying, "it's ok spyro, as much as we want it to be back like it use to be, we can't do anything, we can only wait until someone comes and returns us to our formal glory...."
While Skylanders is a really great idea on it's own, like many others, I feel as though it's not a Spyro game. I would really love to see another Legend of Spyro game be released, I know that it was meant to just be a trilogy, but it ended with me wanting so much more. There are so many things that can be done with that series. The world can be expanded on, it can explore Spyro and Cynder's relationship now that they're together, and there are lots of possibilities for where the story can go. What I think would be really interesting is at one point Spyro begins to despair; he just wants to live out his life, but the world always seems to be depending on him to save it and he begins to question whether he would choose to become the purple dragon if he was given the choice. That can be topped off with Dark Spyro's presence, which while I know would be a lot like The Two Thrones, would be a really fascinating. I always did think that he was not elaborated on as much as he should have been.
I even have an idea for another trilogy. Following the defeat of Malefor, the Dragon Realms seem to be at peace, until whole communities begin to be destroyed by a new race: OURS! Spyro and Cynder both bring it upon themselves to stop the humans before they launch an attack on Warfang, but along the way, they meet a mysterious young man who offers to help them against his kind. While initially uncertain whether or not he can be trusted, Spyro and Cynder begin to form a strong sense of companionship with the human. After traveling across the realms, fighting humans and finding a cool sword for the human character (who I haven't thought a up name for yet), they repel the human armies in a massive siege against Warfang. Following the siege, during which they kill a high ranking member of said army (who appears frequently throughout the game), Spyro and Cynder's human friend vanishes, and they decide that it is time to take the fight directly to humanity.
In the second game, Spyro and Cynder follow the humans back to their homeland, only be discovered and overwhelmed by the enemy. However, when they come to, they find that they have been rescued by their human friend, who joins them across the human lands in order to cripple their empire and remove the tyrannical emperor from power. As they form alliances with elves and dwarfs (both of which have been forced into servitude by the humans), Spyro and Cynder eventually learn their human friends backstory, and why humanity has declared war on the dragon race. Millenia ago, the humans waged war against the dragons, only to be defeated and have their society shattered. Now split in nomadic clans, some craved for vengeance, including the clan leader (and father) of the human character. However, at the age of seven, the human hero, knowing that another war with the dragons would be suicide, left his home and united other clans with the promise of a brighter future for all mankind. Unfortunately, the hero's father objected to the plan, resulting in his death at his son's hands (yes, this guy was a child prodigy). After rebuilding the empire and making himself emperor, however, his brother, who followed his fathers beliefs, overthrew him and drew him into exile, hence the empire's current state. It is also revealed that the emperor plans to open a gate between the world and The Shadow Realm, believing that he can unleash an army of demons and destroy all of humanity's enemies. While Spyro, Cynder and the emperor's brother defeat him, they are unable to prevent him from opening the gate releasing a legion of demons that desire to destroy all life in the world. In order to stop them, the human hero reclaims his title as emperor, and tells Spyro and Cynder to return to the Dragon Realms and convince the dragons to lend aid, knowing that the only way the stop this new threat is for them to stand together.
I've only got ideas for the final game, but you can surmise what it is about. I do have the idea that the Demon King (or whatever other name you can come up with), the leader of all the demons, was actually behind the first war between humanity and dragons, as well as the one who told the human hero's brother about the Shadow Realm(think of it like Reaper indoctrination), and all of the events of the previous games were all part of a master plan do that he could open the game between the two worlds and destroy everything.
This will probably never happen, but I think this could be a great idea and hope that most of you will agree with me.
Honestly I thought the newer Trilogy, Dawn Of The Dragon had a very saddening ending, which made me want to play more. Hoping that there was more. With the line of "when a dragon dies" I knew something was gonna happen to him after I finished the game. Honestly, skylanders ruined it. Spyro is now just a face, with a greedy wanting for cash. I now have *NO* respect for skylanders, ruining one of my favorite game characters. I really hope they make a new Spryo, and im fine with whatever version of style they give us! As long as its nothing like Skylanders or Enter the dragonfly. If not, I think maybe the fans can do something about it.

All those Skylanders on the shelves and all... They're *everywhere* and yet if you mention anything about the first 3 Spyro games to a kid now adays, they'll have no clue what you're talking about.T^T
I taught swim lessons to elementary schoolers, and (this is before i ever touched skylanders, i just knew spyro is in it) I talked to this kid who loved skylanders but not only didnt know spyro was a skylander character at all, but was positive i was lying to him about spyro having his own games. to me, thats equally as sad as kids only knowing the clone wars cartoons, and not the rest of star wars (which is a lot, based on my conversations with kids)

im probably one of the 20 kids who knows what spyro used to be and turned into and to tell the truth I loved basically every game I had of spyro even bad ones but skylanders, well I played it once I don't dare even look at the case any more its just a disgrace its built more for teaching someone to play a game probably even simpler than that! and although I do slightly act like a game critic I am a huge fan of dragons and almost always love any game that involves not just plain killing one but skylanders has at least 8 dragons and I hate every one of them.it takes a lot to make me hate a dragon ( don't believe me? check my name)

Have you noticed that as you progress in the game, LOS, NB, Spyro's appearance in the cutscenes changes slightly, in the beginning you can hardly tell the scales apart, but in the ending one, you can see every last scale... and I LOVED IT!!! It was, to me, a representation of Spyro growing and improving as a character.
This is one of things that inspires me to start a new gaming company that will bring back old game aspects into the new gaming era and maybe recreate dead gaming series'es. Including Spyros. Now to start learning how to program at the Age of 13! And I've only played one Spyro game, and I loved it more looking at the game than I did almost playing Skylanders or any new gen game!
I'm glad you have an appreciation for the older titles! If you want to go back before the original Playstation I highly recommend you try the Donkey Kong Country series from the Super Nintendo days of old :)
Belive it or not I'm actually 12 I remeber playing Super Mario 64 and Mario Paint alot. And some random SNES games aswell. Along with me playing Pokemon Red, Simcity 2000, and trying to find PC games from the 90's era of gaming, oh yeah and also one NES game I think. A normal 12 year old would care about graphics, new consoles, the console wars, and other matters. But not me.
Very cool... there's a lot of great games out there hiding in the dust and cobwebs of time. I'm glad you are keeping an open mind and that the graphics don't have to be the latest and greatest. You'll have a much better gaming experience that way!
I sometimes despise modern games and do anything I can to get my hands on a old fashioned game. When I play a modern age game, I only feel like I'm just doing something for the time being and just that it's boring ('Minecraft is NOT one of those kind of games for me.) When I play old games from my brothers age of gaming which is in the '90s, I feel nogstalgic and plus enteratined. No matter the graphics.

I played the first spyro game recently and cried tears of joy when I saw it. I have the first two skylander games, and the feeling of just platforming made me feel so nostalgic. I have eternal night, and although I've never played it, I don't think I'll have the same feeling as I did in the insomniac era.
Only the original trilogy and Hero's Tail are legit Spyro in my eyes, the new trilogy just isn't the same at all, too similar to the games/movies it took inspiration from, and the celebrity voices ruin it more and make it over-the-top commercialized. What made it so fun was the simplicity of the gameplay and the mini-games and all the fun levels; updating it to have a lot of combat moves doesn't resonate with me and kind of over-complicates things and changes the atmosphere too much. I can definitely relate to the frustration of the Nintendo small console gameplay, I remember one day getting so upset that I had to quit the Rhinocs one! Thank you for doing these videos on Spyro, I've always wanted to know the historical aspect!

i absolutely adore the legend of spyro trilogy (DOTD in particular holy crap i love it so much) but skylanders...really? it's a joke. personally i think a bloody and more mature spyro game would be interesting, one that takes place when he's older or something, idk. the original insomniac games will always be my favourite though, i had a lot of awesome memories with them. thank you for making these videos, you've just gained another subscriber ^.^

I must admit each time after the original Insomniac trilogy I kept cringing waiting for the other series to be revealed... Also I was thinking they could remake the older Spyro games but with modern graphics and more things to do in it like more mini-games, more interesting characters to help out, and heck even add Cynder in there as a playable character. Like the game could ask if you're a boy or a girl and you could be one or the other, or maybe you could even switch between the two like in the Dawn of the Dragon. Now THAT would be something I would love to see.
But remember this: Legend of Spyro is it's own series. Cynder has nothing to do with the original trilogy, because she is not part of that world.

Spyro the Dragon was my childhood along with Crash Bandicoot. I'm 16 now, but I was introduced to the original series of both games and have been playing them since they came out. They never get old. I did kind of like the new Crash games better than the new Spyro games, but the first three Spyro games will always be my favorite and my very first video games. I bought every singe Spyro game until Skylanders came out, I never played it and I never will. I figured out it wasn't about Spyro before they released and I was very upset. I absolutely agree on Spyro enter the dragonfly, that game had terrible glitches. I could access levels without even getting the required number of dragon flies, making the game too easy. Thank you for doing this retrospective! I look forward to some more :).
Known Fact: Skylander gets old REALLY fast
I'm not a Classic Spyro player; I started out playing the Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning when I started High School. And I was taken away by the story. After hearing there were a total of three Legend of Spyro titles, I made it my mission to obtain and complete all three of them. I didn't complete it until I opened up Dawn of the Dragon on Christmas of last year, 2013 (yeah, took WAY too fricking long!) And boy, I fell in love with it.
Now, after watching these videos and learning about the original Spyro games and those that followed, I now have a TOP favorite and LEAST favorite, both of which are probably VERY predictable:
My top favorite: The Legend of Spyro trilogy. It was the very first of the franchise I played, and it had the best storyline, which is what I live for in gaming. In fact, I still to this day wish they would continue with the story of this trilogy because it was so good. I mean, there were several different ways they could have taken it: have Malefor escape from the crystal prisonin the Core of the Realms, for example (Several excellent possibilities are all over FanFiction.net!)
My only complaint was in the annoyance of the quick-time events you went through to defeat the Golem in Dawn of the Dragon. But hey, most gamers hate quick-time events... Moving on...
My least favorite: Skylanders. I know, big surprise, right? My reasons: pretty much identical to the reasons stated in this last video. In my opinion, Skylanders just butchered Spyro.
How Skylanders killed the Spyro franchise:
---alter his appearance, making him look completely ridiculous: check.
---limit his moves to just two (3 if you get his soul gem) after Dawn of the Dragon having a variety of attacks: check
---have a completely cruddy story that makes absolutely no sense when compared to previous games and have Spyro not even be the fricking main character or have his presence not have any relevance to the actual story: CHEEEECK!!!!

The very first game I played was given to me on December 25th 2006 a few months after the legend of Spyro a new beginning, I played through the whole series and loved it and had an emotional bond with it. Then Skylanders came out and it broke me mentally for a few weeks, I cried when I played skylanders, and I'm very very very VERY pissed off because of this, more could have been done with the Spyro series and they fucked it up.
zombieschair Agreed. I really liked the original three, but I absolutely LOVED the Legend of Spyro trilogy. They weren't perfect, but they improved greatly with each game. I feel that if they would have continued with the Dawn of the Dragon style, the series had the potential to some day be counted among the greats like Zelda and Mario. It's potential was left untapped with the birth of Skylanders and the loss of that epic, movie-like game play.

Spyro is a fantastic franchise, but the Zelda games are undefeated champions of the video game industry. Even the worst among them is typically considered a gaming master piece and revolutionary for it's time. Please, for your own sake, play some Legends of Zelda ^_^
I'd recommendeither 'Wind Waker', 'A Link to the Past', or 'A Link Between Worlds' for a newcomer into the series.

I've played a fair few Spyro games in my time but the Legend of Spyro series will remain my favourite. I was always an RPG type person and not so much a platformer (I enjoyed Paper Mario more then any other Mario game).
Had a good story, good characters (though I agree that the constant changing of voice actors for Sparx was a bit suss. I mean in three games he went from being voice by David Spade to Billy West and finally to Wayne Brady.
Aside from that, LOS had characters I felt more emotionally invested in then any other spyro series.
I admittedly play Skylanders myself but I will remain still one of those who question's Spyro's appearance change and 'inclusion' (or lack thereof) in the first game. On some terms that could be grounds for false advertisement.

a reboot would need to be handled carefully and many aspects to be considered (gameplay, story, characters, game mechanics, marketing, age appeal, etc) if someone does it right it, brings back the classic spyro game style into the modern era of gaming, it could be a success and start a new series

Insomniac never owned any of the original spyro games we probably won't ever see an hd remake of the original three spyro games or crash(Since naughty dog never owned crash either).
It doesn't have to be developed by them, it just has to have improved graphics...

They're re releasing the original crash trilogy this year on PS4, and rumor has it that if that collection does well they'll most likely do the same with Spyro.
In my opinion while I've been playing games for almost all of my life I loved Skylanders. First off the collection aspect is well executed. The writing, I felt, had stuff for young audiences and mature audiences to enjoy. It also ties in with the end of Dawn Of The Dragon as most of the original skylanders' back story mention Malefor. And Cynder alongside Dark Spyro appear in the games. Also the soundtrack is gorgeous and, in the second game, simplicity was scrapped as there was difficulty settings were implemented alongside Nightmare Mode which will allow Chompies to have the ability to plow through your Skylanders if you dont kill them before they kill you

Random Vids When did you figure that out? I figured out pretty quickly of that conclusion when they asked me 60 bucks to buy additional add ons which the game doesn't need to play the fucking game.
This whole retrospective is pretty crazy for me, since I treasured the original Spyro trilogy when I was younger but my little brother, who is an entire decade younger than I am, loves Skylanders.
So, the best game of the series is undoubtedly game #1 "Spyro the Dragon" (1998). Well it's my favorite at least. The TLoS series had a bit of crud gameplay, very repetitive combat encounters. However I just loved the graphics, cutscenes, and story. And nobody was better suited to play Spyro's voice other than Elijah Wood. I've honestly never heard of Shadow Legacy until now, which looks interesting. A Hero's Tail (which I've also never played for some reason) looks VERY interesting, and therefor I shall begin playing today!
My favourite is Spyro 2, followed by 3, 1 and the a hero's tail. The LoS games were quite good in my opinion. I didn't really consider them to be true Spyro games but I enjoyed them for what they were.

The Legend of Spyro definitely took our lovable perfect dragon to an amazing turn, in my opinion! Dawn of the Dragon was actually my first Spyro game and then I went backwards with all the Spyro games which REALLY confused me. Luckily, this little series you made helped it make sense. I was probably 8 when I started playing it and it really caught my attention for a love of video games. Skylanders made me excited just because it had Spyro and Cynder in it which really disappointed me when they failed to make me want to play it anymore. I like to collect just those two and the other Skylander dragons and see if I could make a story of my own with Spyro, but he's just a classic that I cannot change. I wish they'd continue The Legend of Spyro or make a Spyro movie, but someone really needs to make a good comeback for him and Cynder both. Yes, I admire Cynder in TLOS!! Even though at first I thought she was a robot... don't ask.. xD But I feel TLOS had a better plot-line to the story of Spyro than any of the other games. If you ask me, I'd say that that whole new version of Spyro when TLOS was released really made the Spyro turn for the better. He's more of a hero now than he ever was and I love him for that! I still play Spyro, even now! To me, he'll never get old. Maybe when I'm older, I can help with Spyro's comeback. It's a crazy dream but that doesn't mean I can't try, right? Lol we'll find out in 10 years! Maybe people are going to surprise us with more Spyro, bigger and better than ever! That would really make me happy! :)

I've only played the first three Spyro games (by Insomniac). I loved them! They are super lighthearted and easy to love. I am going to look for them now to replay on my PS3! That being said, I personally like the idea of a darker, more mature Spyro game. I think taking the idea of a young dragon and showing how he saves his species from a 'realistic,' gory, intense point of view would be awesome. It would definitely be for an adolescent/adult audience, and I think it would be amazing if done correctly. Granted, I don't know what "done correctly" would be, but it would be something that I would try. That idea reminds me of the bootleg power rangers video... Legend of Spyro is good trilogy. I really liked it. Sure it is different in so many ways, but it has good story and very good characters. It is easy and short, but as a complete trilogy, it works.
And this comes from veteran who started PS era with Spyro. Although I did not play most of the games between Year of the Dragon and New Beginning.
I understand why many people do not like this trilogy. But I think it takes decisive steps and becomes epic. The final battle is one to best ever in VG.
I haven't played the original Spyro trilogy so I can't compare them to the Legend of Spyro but that's what I grew up playing on the PS2 and I think they're great games.
What I'd REALLY dole out money for is a skyrim-esque RPG in that universe, they put so much effort into creating it and it really matured by the third one.
It was a good series but it had two downsides imo. One she mentioned with the repetitive gameplay, the other is that Krome did what it does best, make incredibly short games. When you can defeat all three games in about 10 hours there is a problem.

I really liked the Legend of Spyro trilogy simply because my cousin likes to play as Cynder and the story was really good and I like combat Spyro. R. I. P. Spyro, you have been replaced by sh*tty Skylanders.
In my opinion when it comes to Skylanders, I have seen so many advertisements for it but upon further research I said, "Why? Why bother spending money on it concerning it has no storyline, and no powerfully memorable characters?" I have the 3 original Spyro games, and countless times people have asked to buy it from me. It goes beyond me simply wanting to keep a favorite game from my childhood. It was THE first game I actually played. When I saw Spyro: A New Beginning on the shelf one day, I bought it and said "From the looks of the description and the graphics, this will be a great game." I wasn't expecting it to be anything like the older ones. I considered The Legend of Spyro trilogy to be a second generation in Spyro, like what happened in a separate universe or something. To be honest, I even came home from school one day, checked the mail and saw there was a vanilla envelope the size of a game case to my father. I brought it in and he said "Happy Birthday" I opened it to see Dawn of the Dragon and the first thing I said after reading the booklet was "FINALLY! After all these years they give him the ability to fly. Like how old is he??" Both the sets struck into my heart and I'm grateful to be able to still have the ability to play the original and the newer ones. And no matter how many times people request it, I am NOT playing Skylanders. My requirements: Good Storyline. I don't care if the graphics are crappy or if they are excellent, if it doesn't have a good story, I am not playing it.
TLoS was ten times better than Skylanders; yes, dawn of the dragon ending was sad, tear provoking and so not what we were used to but, I actually felt sick at the sight of that Spyro concept.
I really gotta thank you for not shitting all over The Legend Of Spyro. I get all the criticism over the combat, but a lot of people mindlessly complain about the top notch story and voice acting. I also wish you could've talked about the cancelled Legend!Spyro movie.

Personally I think Spyro would topple Mario as Nintendo's mascot so long as they use him right and not as a cash cow. I always found Spyro and series characters to have more personality than Mario ones with a few exceptions on both sides (Bentley and Luigi for example)

What I think, or hope, will happen is Spyro will be "Rayman'd". Where the main character gets a new game with a load of other characters, Rabbids and Skylanders, and then will eventually be completely pushed out of the picture.
After that's happened, the other characters will eventually get overdone and boring, upon which the original character will get a new, great game, Rayman Origins/Legends. Let's hope Spyro gets his Origins/Legends.
Also, could you do a retrospective series on MediEvil, Rayman or Abe's Oddysee?

I played the first Spyro games and i really like them. But my favorite Spyro games are the legend of Spyros they have a nice gameplay and have an epic story.
Personally, I think legend of spyro games are pretty good! But the best part is the song that plays during the credits. The last one is my absolute favorite though.

Watching the 3 part video has made me want to revisit the series. I completed Spyro 1 & 2 (for the 4th time) about 3 months ago. I may as well play Spyro 3 (for the 6th time, hahaha). I have Enter the Dragonfly, Heroes Tail and A New Beginning, but I never actually played them properly. Now that i'm on holidays, I may as well finish the series that I own. There were just lying there on my shelf >.

This kinda made me cry because the original 3 Spyro games were my childhood! I got them when I was 4 and im 16 now, I still have the original ps1 games from when I first got them and play them on my ps2. Can't even imagine how many times I've beaten the games cx the GBA games where Spyro and Crash mix, were also me and my friends entertainment while riding the bus to school and back (along with Pokemon and Zelda) I also have Dawn of the Dragon fly... (my little brother likes it) not so much me... It was a gift from my dad, since he also would play the first games :) Spyro will always be special to me cx Hopefully they do someday bring Spyro back (not skylanders) and keep experimenting :3

The new trilogy games really don't look that bad, but I can't get over Spyro's design, I know it's a superficial thing, but he just looks weird.
I will always love the old Spyro games. I was very angry that the Spyro imposter, Skylanders, would try to take the fans away from him and into their trap. I always have loved the Spyro games since I was a kid. I have played his games since the beginning, and will always miss him. For me, once the legend of Spyro came out, it brang me even closer to our purple friend. I wish that the series would have never ended. I loved that series. Although she didn't mention this, they were planning on developing a Spyro movie in 2009, though it was canceled due to the skylanders coming out. For me, that was a total mistake. I would have loved the movie! Skylanders killed our best friend. Luckily though, there are hard core fans, like me, who would do ANYTHING to make the Spyro games come back to life. Right know I am sixteen and I hope that one of the things that I could work on is to make more of the old Spyro games, as well as the legend of Spyro series. For the movie, I am dumbfounded. If they were going to still make the movies or games, they better do it soon. The hardcore fans are getting older and giving up in their friend. I wish to make the games again one day, so that kids of the new age may experience the adventure we have gone through. I believe that the games can come back. It was humans just like us who made the games, so if they did it, why can't we? I will work with all my power to make the next game, but if the fans will still want to play at that time, I do not know. If I, or someone else makes the old games new again, I would never have the words to express what I feel. For know the games are over, but it falls to us, the new generation to continue the games. So I don't know what you will do, but I will fight for my purple, and do everything I can for him, until the end. What will you do?
I love the Spyro games and to be honest I didn't find Enter the Dragonfly a bad game, true the distance between platforms was long and tiring but I still enjoyed it.
I've only played Spyro Year of the Dragon (haven't completed it yet, one egg left...damn where is it?), I've also played Enter the Dragonfly (not completed, stuck on levels ect), Spyro a Hero's tail (haven't completed, stuck on levels etc)
The only Spyro games I have ever completed are The Legend of Spyro (apart from Eternal Night, stuck on levels again etc)
I've also played Skylanders (disappointed with his design) and Skylander's Giants, both are decent games that I have played but still Spyro's design is horrible, and the fact that you can't jump in the game is so lame that Spyro might as well be taken out of the game. Spyro was designed as a young purple dragon that can Jump (cough Skylanders cough), Glide, Fly, Charge and Flame.
But after The Legend of Spyro I wanted more Spyro games, It's a shame that the games have been stopped

You know, you can jump in SWAP Force. But it shouldn't bother people that you can't jump in the game. They instead had clever alternatives for it, such as the bounce pads. It's not really even meant to be a platformer.
I'm sick and tired of people constantly complaining and whining over Spyro's design. I for one, have no problem with it. I can't see what people dislike about it. I love it. It's his best design yet, in my opinion.
I don't think Skylanders killed Spyro, I think it revived him.

And then came Spyro Reignited Trilogy! 😃😃😃 Toys For Bob KNEW old school Spyro fans were upset with what they did to him in Skylanders, it’s NOT a bad game, it just may not be for you, it’s not for me! Anyway! Toys For Bob wanted to do something special for old school Spyro fans, whilst kind of saying sorry to them at the same time and BAHM! Spyro Reignited Trilogy! 😃😃😃
I wish there was another Legend of Spyro Game. There was going to be a movie which i would of LOVED to see since i like TLoS Trilogy. But the movie HAD to be cancelled, because of Activision wanted it to steer into another direction. #BringBackTLoS. They should at least make one more LoS game, like about someone bringing back malafor once again, or try to do the movie again. The ending of Dawn of the Dragon made me sad. I knew Cynder loved Spyro when she said it, i started to cry a bit. R.I.P Spyro. WE HATE YOU SKYLANDERS!
This was a fantastic retrospective on the Spyro series. It really changed the way I looked at the games. I actually never finished Dawn of the Dragon. I feel like I should go back and play it, considering everyone's saying it's the best of the trilogy. Thanks for making these videos! :)

I would've liked to see the Skylander characters be used in a Spyro 3 setting, With each character having a unique ability that changes how obstacles are overcame, then also having their own challenges. I grew up with the first 3 Spyro games, and I can say that the series as only gotten worse, none of the following games have had a solid design and game play as the first 3 did. As for myself, I do aspire to be a game developer and if ever given the chance to work with Spyro, I would make sure that they would feel like the first 3 did with taking in bits and pieces of other games.

Hm, I'm almost tempted to try the Legend of Spyro series...but at the same time, it's also contradicting the fact that I kind of liked the idea that there was no distinct recollection of when Spyro met Sparx or how. It was left for you to come up with, albeit it slightly influenced by the little shindig held for the baby dragons and their dragonflies in the fourth game. I personally always thought that since he was such a young dragon, he needed additional help to tell when he was hurt. This seemed to hold up in the fact that none of the other dragons/side, yet depicted as older, characters had a dragonfly, and the fact that several of the older dragons reminded him to keep an eye on him, refer to him whenever you think you're getting hurt, etc (such as what a parent or guardian might say to remind their child to tell someone if they aren't feeling good or get hurt).
While it certainly is an interesting concept, I don't think I would consider it my cup of tea.

Yep dawn of the dragon was AWESOME and I wish that someone could have made a actual sequel.
However they decided to make a game with his name on the front as a way to market it.
To add to this they say wop de do who gives a shit what the original Spyro fan-bace lets make a game where looks like he has made by a monkey on drugs doing cartwheels.

Ugh... so here we are to the games that I consider to be the worst in the entire Spyro franchise. I strongly dislike TLoS series and outright HATE the Skylanders franchise.
TLoS isn't really objectively awful, so I guess you could say that my detest for these games stems mostly from the way they tried to turn Spyro into a big dramatic thing. In my opinion, Spyro was only ever meant to be a lighthearted platformer. Trying to turn Spyro into a huge fantasy epic just doesn't seem right. I'd be like if they tried to turn Ratchet and Clank into a melodramatic story of vengeance. Then there's Skylanders... Mother of God. The way they use Spyro's image to sell the product and then shove him aside and give him no actual purpose is just despicable to a long time fan. And that new design! OH GOD! SPYRO, WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOU!?
But both of these games, to me, stink of a focus-testing sort of mindset. For TLoS, it seems like they tried to make it dramatic and dark because that's the only thing they thought would sell, completely disregarding Spyro's lightheartedness. And with Skylanders, they obviously just wanted to trick kids to buying a bunch of overpriced figurines and duping them out of a whole lot of cash. So I particularly hate Skylanders, not only for its abuse of Spyro, but its obvious intent of robbing kids of all their money with the whole "gotta collect em' all!" thing.
I mostly agree with you OckhamAsylum execpt on the LoTS stand point i have to disagre I do enjoy the LoTS games.

Also, the idea of Spyro's Kingdom was certainly more appealing than selling off Spyro to Activision.

with a new beginning I specifically remember there being distinct differences between the different breaths with the electricity allowing you to move enemies. I remember much of my later game-play was spent dropping enemies in the closest death pit using the electric breath.
I love all Spyros and Skylanders is not a bad game, just because the Spyro that's in it looks "strange"(personally I think it looks ok but take long to get used to).

growing up with the 3 spyro games and never playing the others though i did rent Enter the dragonfly but rarely played it and have little to no memory of it since i also rented ratchet and clank (it's obvious which i played more lol) this was very entertaining to watch and learn about as well as learning that dawn of the dragon was pretty much the last game for the series. you just earned yourself a subscriber, keep up the good work~
I really wish someone could come up with a good revamped version of spyro, sticking more to the originals. the idea of the darker spyro games was nice but I found them too gloomy! Spyro had nice upbeat music and for the most part a bright and cheery atmosphere. I'm sure someone could come up with new worlds and problems for him to tackle in an older style way. Granted the new graphics are nice but honestly I'd rather have a new spyro similar to the first 3 with graphics a little less fancy. I think they could've done something with the whole dragonfly concept but just the way that game was made was wrong. I continue to replay the first 3 because of my dislike for the new ones. I really hope someday it can be brought back in a proper manner.

Lovely Alice Unlikely… But I would freaking love that. I do know that all the ex-Rare members have been getting together, and even started a Kickstarter, to put together a spiritual sucessor to Banjo-Kazooie (Mingy Jongo). Hasn't been much info since late 2012/early 2013 though…
No Sony should buy the franchise back. Spyro was born on PlayStation and would still be had Sony or Insomniac had the rights to it...
This is one reason why I want to become a game designer or creator, to revive these perfect games and make them relevant again
