Hey Max. You never answered people's questions on the "Sony A7III vs A7S2" video. Dropping an authoritative test video onto TH-cam showing A7 III with soft image quality and then not following up on it is a bit irresponsible.
dunno if anyone gives a damn but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times you can stream all the new movies and series on instaflixxer. Have been watching with my gf for the last couple of weeks :)
I purchased the 24-70 GM but when it came in and after testing it I couldn’t justify keeping it for the price point. Tamron is on backorder everywhere so I paid an extra 150 to get it early and have been beyond satisfied. Save your money guys !!!
Thank you for a great video. Now I really feel that GM lens are overpriced. I thought I would buy it as a long-term investment but sharpness is the most important aspect of the lens for me.
TechLineHD, your comment makes no sense, you say you would pay 3000 for it, but then again you wouldn't pay 3000 for it because it's not a good lens. we aren't talking about an imaginary 24/70 that is the ultimate 24/70, we are comparing to the 24.70 GM that actually exist, so you would not pay $3000 for the 24/70 GM because in your own words its not that good.
@@chrisrodas10 trust me you will love it! but if currently you're a canon or nikon user, at first the setting and setups will be a littler complicated! but there are a lot of videos to help you on youtube. I recommend studying about LOG video format before getting it. good luck.
Good to see that there is some competition in the Sony world. I love the 24-70GM. It's basically my always on lens. Did a 4 week roadtrip in the US recently and I used that lens 98% of the time.
i think it's extremely important that budding photographers should buy within your budget . there are a lot of photographers with expensive gear who don't know how to take a picture AT ALL. this was great review overall. cheers mate 👌🏻
I literally JUST took delivery of the 24-70 GM! All of the AF issues scared me away from the Tamron. I need a solid go-to lens for videography and didn't want to take any chances. The Tamron does look pretty solid though.
I really like the Tamron but am I the only one that's disappointed by the bokeh? GM lens has really smooth bokeh and the Tamrons bokeh has a weird effect. Objects seem to have some weird outlines.
Believe me, I had the 17-50 2.8 for my Nikon, and that bokeh is so familiar to me. Is a really ugly bokeh, while Sony's are soft and beautiful. I know sonys are overpriced, but just to avoid that bokeh I'd rather go with the Sony.
I was tempted but no thanks ill stick to native glass. I can't trust it, on a job I don't need to worry about firmware! I recently switched from Nikon so weight is a non issue for me 24-70 gm all day!
Hey Max! Great review. I have had both lenses and what I found that the Tamron had issues for me with continuous focus in low light video situations! I was really surprised. The Tamron would hunt for focus while the other G-Master did not. It was that reason that I returned my Tamron and went with the G-Master.
Did you notice such behavior while taking photos? I can't decide which one to choose for weddings. I need a good AF in low light... Thank you in advance!
Thanks Max for this great comparison review. And thanks also to Tamron for coming up with such a great-value product. I was so hesitant to upgrade to full-frame - because of expensive lenses - but with this lens you just made the best of full-frame system within my reach.
The sony lens actually has distortion as well, but the camera corrects it in software, which accounts for some of the corner softness you're seeing. (Try to detach it, put tape on the pins, then reattach it.) That makes me wonder, might a future firmware upgrade add support for distortion correction to the tamron lens as well?
I did test the 24-70 GM slightly detached and while there was some distortion I was really impressed by how little. I talked about this and showed examples in my Tamron 28-75 vs Sony 24-105 F4 comparison, where that Sony has a lot of distortion without the software correction. For the GM there is very little software corrections so I didn't think it was worth mentioning. I do hope a firmware update will enable software correction! That would be a huge bonus for this Tamron.
I was considering the GM before I watched this review. I'll definitely purchase the Tamron and buy either 20mm or 24mm Sigma Art Prime lens. Thank you so much Max.
I agree with your preference for the Tamron. However, I shoot with the A6500 and chose that camera as the basis of my travel kit. IMO the Tamron, although a wonderful lens is a bit heavy for that use... I also prefer a lens with internal focusing and zoom so that it doesn't retract.
I have to contradict my original answer about the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens. I have been shooting with one for about a year now and love it on both my A7iii and my A6400...
I enjoyed this review. maybe because it backed up my opinion about what I thought this lens would be since I heard it announced. I have had GM die hards try to tell me that it doesn't compare. or they act like the Tamron is a Kit lens. so it is a real joy to see people saying it is actually sharper than the GM. but I know there is still a market for the GM. because there were allot of people who bought Canon L glass because it had a red ring. but this Tamron is really going to make a dent in the sales of the Sony 24/70 GM and also the 24/105 f4. the price alone is hard to argue with. almost 1/3 rd the price of the GM, and the fact that it's almost half the weight is a big selling point. along with the close focusing, but the fact that it's sharper at f2.8 is the big surprise. yes I know the GM has the better feeling build quality and the button on the lens. and 4mm more on the wide end, but personally I am ok with 28mm. but as far as build quality, I have recently seen some posts about the 24/70 GM rubber focus ring getting out of shape and starting to fall off after around a year of use. and my Tamron 24/70 f2.8 VC is maybe 6 years old and has never had any issues. and that leads me to something I don't think you even mentioned in this video. witch is the Sony has a one year warranty, and the Tamron in America has a 6 year warranty. enjoyed the comparison.
This was a fantastic review, Max! Really in depth and thorough...not a simple task. I'm picking up the Tamron tomorrow for my Sony, so I'm excited to test it out, especially after watching your video. Just subscribed...thanks man!
The biggest question is what camera and lens was this video shot on. Did you have a second A7iii to take this video, or another Sony? I am trying to determine this camera A7iii with Tamron 28-75mm vs. Nikon Z6 for shooting wedding videos. What do you think?
Haven't watched yet (mobile data), but i'm sure it's great as always. For the price of the GM you can get the tamron, the sigma 14-24 and the mc11 adapter and all the wide angle you need.
Hey Max thanks for the great comparison ! I will go for the Tamron then. By the way, with which lense did you film this video ? Is it the sony E 50mm f1.8 ? Looks so sharp ! Thanks for you answer
I bought the Sony GM. Why? I listed 7 reasons for this choice, but here I will mention only the two most important ones: 1) 24mm focal lenght. I am a wedding photographer and my 24-70 is on the main camera the whole time. I browsed through my past weddings and I noticed that most of the time during weddings I am shooting between 24mm and 37mm focal lenghts. With a lot of 24mm in there. So for me to buy the Tamron would mean to continuously switch between that lens and my 25mm Batis...there's no way that I can do that in a wedding. So I need 24mm. Reason #2: I just invested a lot of money on an A9, and it would really make no sense to invest that much on the best camera, only to use it with an average lens that imposes limitations on it. Yep, the Tamron 28-75 can not deliver the 20 fps bursts that the A9 is capable of. It limits the camera to 10 fps, which for me, is like buying a Ferrari just to drive it at 90kmph. Makes no sense, right? If I wanted 10 fps I could easily go on with my existing A7 mark 3. So in my opinion, if you invest in an A9, you need to buy a lens that exploits it's full potential, and not only 50% of it.
Hey, some time passed since your compromise. And I finde many used Sony’s 24-70 for about 1200€. So 400€ More than I would pay for Tamron. Would you still prefer the Tamron with this price difference?
Obviously at 28mm it would be sharper than 24mm if you're zooming in on the same object to the same percentage... You should have compared them both at 28mm
I really wanted to like (and order 🙂) the Tamron, but it‘s the first lense ever where I actively noticed that I‘m not satisfied with the bokah... it looks somewhat off to me. Anybody else? Opinions? Great video, though! Thanks! 👍🏼
Question. I currently have the Sony 16-35 GM f2.8 + Sony 85mm f1.8, but am hoping to switch to a 1 lens for all set-up for run-and-gun video w/ photo and occasional gimbal work. Split between switching to the 24-70 GM vs the 28-75 Tamron. Hmmm.......suggestions? (ps- i have a Zhiyun Crane Plus, too heavy for the 24-70 GM so would have to switch to Ronin S if we went the GM route). My hesitancy is the if 28mm will be too narrow...
I double check my copy of 24-70GM on my A7ii body, it is really sharp at the center@2.8, and reasonable sharp on extreme corner, so Max, you should try another copy(if you have the chance) and do it again, because there is a quality control problem of 24-70GM before July of 2017, shown as not sharp or assemble issue.
Unfortunately, I can't check it, but all the other tests were still valid. I also tested this Tamron vs the Sony 24-105 F4 G and the Tamron was sharper. I tested that same 24-105 F4 G to a different 24-70 GM and the 24-105 was basically just as sharp as that GM. Maybe there are other copies that are sharper in the corners but in general, the GM's are great and the Tamrons performance being this good shows that its great too :)
I actually considered buying the GM. Then I considered the buying the Tamron instead but so far, I haven't purchased either and I probably won't. I'm super impressed with what Tamron have done with this lens but I don't think I'd be very happy with the way it renders after a few weeks or months of owning it. I tend to gravitate toward fast primes before zooms. When I switched over to full frame and bought the a7III, I sold all of my APS-C lenses and bought the Sony 85 f1.8 and the Batis 25 f2. Both lenses are much better equipped to handle low light situations and I feel that the rendering is of much higher quality. This lens is certainly a bargain and a lot of what I've seen has been quite good but for my uses, I think faster primes work best for me. It can become cumbersome to change lenses back and forth but I think the quality of the shots are worth the hassle.
I am planning to buy a Sony Mirrorless camera but Sony lenses are super expensive Could you recommend other brands like Sigma or Tamron I need equivalent to: 16-35 24-70 70-200
GFFmatt Thanks! I just stood with my back to it. The ride wireless with the included mic does a decent job with background noise suppression. I always avoided situations like this one until I was forced to shoot once and the result wasn’t half bad. The background music helps a bit as well.
Nice presentation bro. helped my in deciding which one to choose...Tamron all the way Maaan, though if I had the Money I would most definitely not mind the Sony...Cheers
I just purchased this lens based on this video in particular. The comparisons you provided were exactly what I was looking for. Since I am coming over to Sony for the first time since shooting Canon (currently a 7D) for many years, I decided to jump to Sony, A7III, with an adapter for my Canon glass using the metabones V, and then purchasing this Tamron as my first Sony compatible lens. Which looks to be my new walk around lens. I will still use my 16-35 f2.8L II USM, and my 70-200 f2.8L (non IS), but eventually I will be looking to sell those and switch to native Sony lenses.
Hey Max sorry to hear about your TH-cam trouble but I have an question I am about to purchase a GPU and I built my last computer based on your build for the Ryzen TR... but that one was for my office with an unlimited budget the one I built at home was a bit more modest ryzen 1700x this is the one I want to be able to edit 4k but with only a budget of around 500. Can you help? Kepp up the good work and one thing I have learned is to overcome obstacles makes you wiser and stronger. Keep moving forward.
thank you MAx for your amazing review. I want to purchase sony ariii or sony aiii will this tamron be compatible with it? I need very sharp portraits full body and close up. ALso please do tell did you film the video test in the wood with your colleague featuring in this video with sony 6500? you are awesome
I have the Tamron and 28 is not wide enough for me. Great lens but need to now get 18-35 F4 Sony lens at £1,000. Not sure if I should trade in the Tamron or not.
Nice review Max, any insight as to weather sealing on either or? Makes a difference for me. Bad enough that Sony bodies don't seem to be as well sealed as my Canon gear was but don't want to be worried about the body and the lens too.
Great comparison as always man! Can you compare the new sigma 35 1.4 vs the rokinon 35 1.4 for sony as well?? I've really been on the fence about that one trying to decide if the sigma is worth the extra money.
How do they compare when it comes to chromatic aberrations? @ 6:20 The Tamron has purple edges around the silver window frame of that black car, while the Sony looks pretty clean.
I’d go for GM, other reviews shows the GM is much sharper than the tamron, I like to invest to a tank build lens moist dust and weather resistant, extra 4mm is very important for me, since 28mm is too tight, the GM has more pleasing bokeh than the tamron, I bought both of these lenses and I picked the GM over tamron, my advice is, if you want to invest for professional use, pick GM, for hobby go with tamron.
If I take a picture with a 24 70 at the highest resolution (24mpx in my cam) and I just crop the image, will I have the same result as a 70 200? will I get a huge difference in quality, or a decent result? (Sorry, but I´m stingy and dont want to buy more lenses LOL)
The Tamron is the lens I've been waiting for ever since I switched to Sony. I've been using the Zeiss 24-70 f4 for the last couple of years by have found the aperture and image quality underwhelming and the Sony GM is just too expensive for a hobbyist. Now I'm just waiting for Tamrom or Sigma to come out with a 70-200 f2.8 for Sony. On another note 24mm is really quite a lot wider than 28mm. That said I don't really go that wide for general use and when shooting a landscape I can always just use my adapted Canon FD 24mm f2.8 ($100 on eBay).
You will absolutely love that lens. If it fits your budget, and you love the results, keep it. I have the Tamron, and i rented the gmaster for a weekend and adore them both. I found the gmaster a little sharper than Max seems to - but both a great lenses.
Update...I love my 24 70. Beautiful images and video is excellent. I've heard there were some issues with the Tamron compatibility. Small issues that an update might fix. I need mine to be 100% reliable or I would just be too nervous. I'll keep my Sony lens but certainly keep an eye on all new Tamron and Sigma lens as they seem to be serious about this marker.
The Tamron is a great lens too, but part of what makes it great is being so much cheaper than the g-master. Tamron released their firmware update yesterday so the focus issues are fixed for it. But congrats on the gmaster. That is an awesome lens.
That's impressive, even in the DSLR world, a standar f2.8 zoom under 900$ performing this well is a UFO. Did you consider your GMaster to be slightly de-centered ? I've heard it could be the case on a few examples, corners seems very mushy..
Max, thank you for the great comparison but I a little confused. When I went to the Amazon link provided it shows "Unavailable" and the comparisons they offer do no show the G-Master but do show other lenses with 5 stars Why not compare with this Sony 28-75mm f/2.8 Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) Full Frame Lens for Sony Mount Digital SLR Cameras?
Steve Cav that lens is for the Sony SLR cameras not the new mirrorless ones (it’s and old lens) both of these are full frame lenses for the new mirrorless E mount.
Would've considered this if they had it back in Dec 2017. Brought the 24-70 2.8 GM than and I love it. I owned the Tamron 24-70 2.8 Canon version 1 and it was very soft at 2.8 and had back focus issues. But the Sony version I agree is super expensive.

not really overpriced, it's price for brand.
Bear Bull I would definitely pay even $3000 for it as I want flagship Sony product but the lens is simply not that good
I think it's mainly the 24-70 that is overpriced and not all GM lenses, as the 24-70 is also worse than the canon
I own 85gm. Focus speed is horrible on it. Batis wins anyday.
Your videos just get better and better, Max.
6:06 omg having your lense upside down and sensor exposed facing up. Monster
would it have been safer the other way around?
Bought the A7 III with the Tamron after watching your video. Thank you very much!

Thanks! Do you think Tamron 28-75 will be good at shooting sports events?
My build is Tamron 24-75 + Sony Zeiss 16-35 F4 :D u can buy it for same price than G master. And you have 16-75 focal lenght :)
Own the tamron and its prob on the camera the most. Its the most versatile, takes beautiful pics, and its so light and ergonomic!
I plan to pair my Tammy with the new Samyang 24mm f2.8 ✨ (for gimbal and compact/indiscreet/casual uses)
That’ll be my 2-lens kit.
Do u really do that when you change lens 6:05?

Hello! Thank you for your vid.
Do you suffer from any issues from continous AF failure during recording video?
Bought the Tamron. So far very pleased with my purchase. I will buy a GM lens, but it will be the 16-35 f/2.8.
Cactus Tweeter Good choice, I'm really happy with my 16-36 GM, it's so sharp and no chromatic aberration or flares.
I love my 16-35 but honestly want the 70-200gm. I might send it back then get a 35mm prime
Same as what I think ( got 16 35 gm yesterday) together with 501.4
I am doing the opposite of this :) i have 16-35gm but also getting 28-75 tamron
+Aram Azhari I think you're going to love it. Especially for $800.

Great video! I have the tamron on an A7iii, no complaints. Hard to beat the size and weight.
Do you recommend a7iii ONLY for photography? I want to make an upgrade from nikon apsc entry level to something better, for example fuji or sony ff
Hey Max thanks for the great comparison ! I will go for the Tamron then. By the way, with which lense did you film this video ? Is it the sony E 50mm f1.8 ? Looks so sharp ! Thanks for you answer
I love the Tamron lens. As Much as I LOVE the Video quality, I feel it Really shines with Photography. The images Really POP.
I had the 28 75 F2.8 on loan from tamron for my holiday the other week, loved it so much I had to buy one 😁
always appreciate your spot on reviews...without all of the ridiculous emotion some other folks do here on TH-cam
Great videos as usually man good job!
I bought the GM last summer. After seeing this review along with others on Tamron, I’m very relieved that I decided on the GM.
fightingmink why is that?
Yep
Grabbing my tamron today, many thanks!!
Hey, some time passed since your compromise. And I finde many used Sony’s 24-70 for about 1200€. So 400€ More than I would pay for Tamron. Would you still prefer the Tamron with this price difference?
Yes
Would you say the larger glass on the Sony helps it perform better in low-ight? I haven't seen anyone touch upon this. Maybe it makes no difference.
I just literally got the Sony A7III I'm on a budget currently at the moment so I got the 28-70mm kit lens. Is it worth getting the Tamron
Obviously at 28mm it would be sharper than 24mm if you're zooming in on the same object to the same percentage... You should have compared them both at 28mm
Yes, I noticed that too. It's obviously unfair comparison at 24 and 28 on other hand
Obviously your an a-hole, you should be compared to other a-holes myself included.
Great video Max! Well done
Tamron also can focus much closer at the wide end!
yup! I showed this off in a shot but the title was wrong. 2:20
What camera stabilizer do you use for your videos? Only Crane V2 or ones as well.
That's crazy I work for multicare and it's been crazy adopting valley hospital into the system
Totally agree, just saying there is some issue on 2470GM that needs to be consider too. After all, 2470GM still is a great lens if able to afford one.
what 20mm f2 ? do you like, are you talking about the Tokina Ferin
Thx for good quality comparison
Cannot wait until they are in stock!!!
Max what you think about new sigma 24-70 art ?
Si tengo dinero para comprar GM es buena opción o de plano las otras opciones ofrecen la misma calidad?
can I used the tamron 28-75 mm in my A6400 without any crop sensor?
Another great comparison review, thank you very much.
Hi Max, I think for some of the Sony GM lens got quality control issue, especially at the long end. Sharpness degradation is quite obvious.
I am planning to buy a Sony Mirrorless camera but Sony lenses are super expensive
Could you recommend other brands like Sigma or Tamron
I need equivalent to:
16-35
24-70
70-200
i owned a tamron 28-75mm f2.8 Nikon FX mount 5 years ago. And it's great lens on budget!
Great review, Max - but I really want to know is HOW did you suppress that waterfall sound?
GFFmatt Thanks! I just stood with my back to it. The ride wireless with the included mic does a decent job with background noise suppression. I always avoided situations like this one until I was forced to shoot once and the result wasn’t half bad. The background music helps a bit as well.
rode wireless meaning filmmaker kit?
Dear Max, I am thinking to buy this lens together with the Laowa 15mm F2. Thank you for all your great reviews.
Great review Max thank you so much !
Hey Max Great Video. one question is the manual focus backwards like on other tamron's or is it like canon?
thank you MAx for your amazing review.
You had me at Tamron was “sharper”.
Screaming
Exactly! lol
Hideous bokeh is acceptable to you?
Declan Murphy sharpness > bohek for me at least.
Cool. I guess you don't shoot portraits/fashion.
Nice review Max, any insight as to weather sealing on either or? Makes a difference for me. Bad enough that Sony bodies don't seem to be as well sealed as my Canon gear was but don't want to be worried about the body and the lens too.
The Tamron has been backordered for over a month. good luck getting it
Your best bet is to order it now and wait, I think it will be selling out for a while just like the a7iii.
update, backordered for over 2 months already, still nothing on both adorama and bandhphoto
Great comparison as always man! Can you compare the new sigma 35 1.4 vs the rokinon 35 1.4 for sony as well?? I've really been on the fence about that one trying to decide if the sigma is worth the extra money.
On the Crane V2, can it do the Tamron and the Sony a9? I know the a9 is a little heavier than the a7iii. Thanks Max!
That said I don't really go that wide for general use and when shooting a landscape I can always just use my adapted Canon FD 24mm f2.8 ($100 on eBay).
dude, you just sway me to Tamron !! thank you for taking the time to make this review!
Damn...could have used this video a week ago. My Sony 24 - 70 arrives tomorrow.
Send it back. Not worth the money.
The Tamron 28-75 update came out this week and fixed the autofocus issues.
The Tamron is a great lens too, but part of what makes it great is being so much cheaper than the g-master. Tamron released their firmware update yesterday so the focus issues are fixed for it. But congrats on the gmaster. That is an awesome lens.
Man, that bokeh tho! Such a fussy bokeh on the Tamron :( I really want this lens, and will probably buy it, but man it's busy.
Will this work on Sony a6000?
Plan on buying it so once i upgrade to FF, then its FF ready
Is the af bug fix by now?
JibaroTech yes. The firmware fix released today.
helpful review max. thank you so much
That's impressive, even in the DSLR world, a standar f2.8 zoom under 900$ performing this well is a UFO. Did you consider your GMaster to be slightly de-centered ? I've heard it could be the case on a few examples, corners seems very mushy..
Hey Max! I was wondering if the tamron is easy for video manual focus???
It’s about average for an electronic lens. Similar to the Sony but not as good as a manual lens (still better than cheap electronic focusing lenses)
Max, thank you for the great comparison but I a little confused. When I went to the Amazon link provided it shows "Unavailable" and the comparisons they offer do no show the G-Master but do show other lenses with 5 stars
Why not compare with this Sony 28-75mm f/2.8 Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) Full Frame Lens for Sony Mount Digital SLR Cameras?
Steve Cav that lens is for the Sony SLR cameras not the new mirrorless ones (it’s and old lens) both of these are full frame lenses for the new mirrorless E mount.
Would've considered this if they had it back in Dec 2017. Brought the 24-70 2.8 GM than and I love it. I owned the Tamron 24-70 2.8 Canon version 1 and it was very soft at 2.8 and had back focus issues.
But the Sony version I agree is super expensive.
Hi! what about noise while focusing? Is it that motorized autofocus enough quiet on Tamron? Thanks
If on a7R or a9, i would say sony since i heard that G master were built to support the high resolution and 20fps. correct me if im wrong =|
