    I keep thinking about these options and MAN, if the new GM was fully internal zooming at that size, then it could justify the price over the Sigma. I hope more manufacturers focus on internal zoom lenses in the future!

    • @MeAMuse
      @MeAMuse 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Does any company make an internal zooming 24-70mm? I am not aware of any? Also internally focussing at that size.... pretty sure that breaks physics...

    • @JohnDennery
      @JohnDennery 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Just saying, that is a detail that would set it apart! I really love internal zooms and wish every lens was haha

    • @MeAMuse
      @MeAMuse 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@JohnDennery It would be nice... but I believe it is impossible. The reason that you can do it on a 70-200 is that they are both telephoto focal lengths. The length of the lens is determined by the 200mm range and you are moving a few elements to achieve the 70mm. The problem with a 24-70 is that you are going from somewhat wide, to somewhat tele. I know your first thought is probably "well they are both ~3x zoom there shouldn't be much difference"... but the problem is that optics don't care about mm. They care about field of view angles which is why as companies make faster zooms (or lighter/smaller) they tend to sacrifice the wider end to 28 (in the case of Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 or Canon 28-75mm F2) or 35mm (for the Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8). The 24-70 goes from ~74 degree field of view to ~29 degree field of view, where-as a 70-200 goes from ~29 to ~10. So a difference in FOV angle on the 24-70 is ~45 compared to ~19 on the 70-200. If you look at your 24-70 when it is at its widest - all the elements are pretty much bunched up and close together at the front of your lens. But notice how close that has to be to the sensor and how little of the front element is actually used at 24mm. Now you have to ask yourself how you can put all those elements there and then focus them much further back now on the sensor without sacrificing the 70mm end. Hopefully this describes the problem well enough to visualize. The 70-200mm is just soo much easier to design to be internal because all the elements are spaced out more in the lens design to hit those focal lengths.

    Dan I owned the older Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GM and sold it and got the better Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN which I love . At $1099 USD for the Sigma, I see no real reason for me to switch to the superb new Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GM at $2299 USD . The Sigma gives me stunning image quality on my current A1, A7RIV and A7SIII. Yes the Sigma is heavier but I am used to the size and weight and love its quality. FYI, I do currently own 13 E-mount lenses from 10mm to 600mm from Sony, Sigma and Tamron, including some top newer GMs. For all around work this Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN and my Sony 24-105mm f4 G OSS probably get the most use. Full disclosure: I did keep one of my Canon lenses, the Canon TS 17mm f4 Tilt-Shift lens when I moved over to Sony in January 2017 after over 40 years using pro Nikon and Canon gear (both brands). Dan , bought the Tamron 28-75 G2, also have (in that range) the Sony 3r5 1.4 GM and Sigma 50 1.4, both the Sigma and the 35 1.4 are exceptionally great lenses in every category, so, I was curious to see how the G2 fared against these primes, and did a practical test around the home, with practical, I mean, I did not shoot any test charts or other typical testing tools, I wanted to see how they compared on my typical daily use, hand held on my A7IV, at 2.8 opening for all cases, and I concluded that, unless I get to 200 or 300% magnification, I can't see any difference, they all look great. I don't have the Sigma or Sony GM 24-70 to compare , for my non-pro needs, can't justify paying more for either lens, in particular if they are heavier, if you are a pro printing poster size probably this would make sense buying a GM. BTW, I paid $800 for the G2 brand new from B&H, and I am going to try this weekend on gimbal on a family event, I tend to be careful on my back and avoid overloading it, this lens is the right weight on a DJI R3 Mini.

For wedding photography I found it hard to justify the extra money for the Sony. I can get the Sony 35mm F1.4 GM along with the Sigma and still have a little change left over. • @justinavila1320
    @justinavila1320 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The Sony is nice having tested it - but at an EXTREME premium (not in terms of 1st party 24-70mm 2.8s. Nikons 24-70mm 2.8 F mount forever was similarly priced - even 10 years ago - forget current market value with inflation.) Its just that in the past the third party lenses just weren't nearly on par, and were def "budget" in every penny. This has changed somewhat. The Sigma 24-70mm being overall better than the GM M1 version of the Sony lens at half the cost. I think its harder now to justify the GM2 when it comes to overall (with COST being the major factor.). Cost not an issue? Go with the GM2 hands down. Its the most refined of the bunch. But the oddity here now is that the Sigma is not far behind, and if cost is of even modest concern its HANDS down the winner - mainly in the trade off of weight and balance vs the GM2, aperture ring, and buttons. I personally LOVE an aperture ring. Never use the buttons on the GM lenses. I did like the size and balance of the GM 2. At the end of the day though - It was hard to justify the cost (trust me, easy to talk myself INTO justifying the cost - but in reallity when looking at the bank account just couldn't - having owned and used both lenses). But that's me, I have to live on a budget, and my days of spending and talking myself into it have changed. I'm still creative amazing images with either lens - with the Sigma - I get to have a bit less stress and perhaps a nicer vacation of life event to put that extra cash to.

    I’m literally torn between the Sigma 24-70 and Tamron 28-75. I almost went with Tamron recently, and even talked to a couple who uses Tamron lenses. They said they liked their Tamrons and would recommend me getting that over Sigma if I was on a budget, but then said Sigma was slightly sharper and had slightly faster AF.
    For me, I primarily do videography and I just want a 2.8 lens for videography, and I have a Glidecam that I use sometimes, as well as a Ronin S (I barely used so far). I rented both a Tamron and Sigma before and I used Sigma on my Glidecam, and it was clunkier, heavier and kinda close to my Glidecam pressure plate, which is my concern.

That being said, I have just bought the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 mark II and I have to say that the quality and weight is perfect for me since I carry my camera everyday and I hike to get photos. My vote goes to the Sony mark II but I bet the 35-150mm would end up being my second choice.

      If 28mm is not wide enough for you, 24mm definitely won't be either.

      @@learningcameras I would like to point out that you mentioned that the G2 lense has no buttons. That is not only incorrect, but is actually the most versatile because of the tamron software, you can customize the button and the focus ring.

    Hi Dan, thank you for the great review! Question, what longer zoom lens do you recommend as a companion to this lens?

      Thanks! So either the Sigma 35-150mm F2-2.8 or the Sony 70-200mm F2.8 GM II are great
