Will adding 70 grains to my arrow destroy my trajectory? (620 grains total)

  • Did going from 547 grains to 620 grains destroy my trajectory and point of impact? Plus, I risk my chronograph to find out it’s arrow speed at 100yrds.

    When the arrow doesn't erode over time u get a truer shot. I'm talking out the arrow fluttering or parachuting when it's too light @ longer distances. If the spine allows u can have a 530-570 grain arrow keep incredible accuracy @ longer distances if it's a 4mm shaft with 4 low profile vanes. But a 600 grain arrow and up will be quieter upon release.

    That 235 FPS is still insane though (86.4% of original fps). That means that even at those far out distances you still have plenty of lethal force moving. I shoot recurves so much less fast but another data point to say that if your slow you might as well hit hard since the speed drop within effective hunting ranges really is not going to be significant.

    You and I shoot same draw and roughly the same setup. I actually have 3 different weight broadheads in my quiver for different applications, but all the arrows weigh the same at 550g.. I'm an east coast hunter and I've hunted Kauai . You shoot 81# mathews I shoot a 80# hoyt. AT 80# you tip the scales of spine weights. You could drop 5# off your draw and it would keep you in the 260 spine, I did that on my setup. My main broadheads are 150g because I wanted to shoot the IW wides that were not vented.. I shoot IW 150 wides and 150 single bevels. I personally do NOT want to go to 600g+ arrows. I blow through everything. I've actually lost more broadheads due to them being stuck in logs or roots than I have to lack of penetration. My sight tape gets me out to 114 yards. FOC be damned. I've been shooting 500-550g arrows for 25 years. I've tried chasing FOC but I've also never had arrow penetration issue.. I said all that to say, you can save yourself money on new arrows if you just drop 5# off your draw weight

    that's a good fluffy mic cover! what is it?? I shot Ironwill S Series 150 on GoldTip, Black Label Quantum 250, 3 fletch AAE Max, was 525 grains at about 272 ft/sec. max. Overall, in practice it was okay, but I noticed some arrow wiggle in flight, which is probably more Bow Turning issue. My max comfortable distance was 60 yards in practice. Unfortunately never got a shot opportunity this season but will look to practice with this set up more now. Bow is Mathews V31, 29" draw, 70#.

    Great video. I see in the comments below that you are shooting 81 lbs at a 31.25 inch draw length. Is that correct?
    My setup is likely going to be a Mathews Atlas set at 75lbs with a 32 or 32.5 inch draw length. I believe I am going to have to adopt a similar 200 spine 5mm Axis for my set-up. For comparison purposes can you share your arrow length (end to end of the carbon shaft) and the total tip weight (tip plus insert). Thanks!

  • @stevehuffman7453
    @stevehuffman7453 ปีที่แล้ว

    you'll probably need to add a bit of elevation, same as you do shooting your standard arrow at 20~25 yards and then taking a shot at 45~50 yards.
    The heavier arrow will be traveling slower, draw weight and length the same as with a lighter arrow.
    Gravity will pull both to the ground at the same speed, regardless of the horizontal speed of a projectile.
    Fun fact: If you simultaneously fire a .22 rimfire rifle ~1200 feet per second), and a rifle chambered for .220 Swift (4,000 feet per second) with the bores perfectly horizontal, AND drop a 600 grain bullet from a .50 BMG cartridge from the same height as the centerline of the rifle bores, all three pullets will hit the ground at the same time. The .220 Swift is traveling a lot faster than the .22 rimfire, thus going a much greater distance, giving the illusion the .220 Swift has a flatter trajectory. In reality, their trajectory - time it takes for them hit the ground after leaving the barrel, is the same. The slower .22 rimfire needs more time to reach the same distance, so it requires more elevation, making the arch the bullet travels higher. At 100 yards, for example, the rimfire bullet may drop 8 inches or so, while the .220 swift may have dropped a small fraction of an inch. Any bullet (or arrow) needs enough elevation so the arch of the projectile and the line of sight intersect at the given distance.
    Therefore, the correct answer is: No. A heavier arrow will not mess up your trajectory. The arrow is falling to the ground at the same speed. That has not changed. The time in flight has changed, so you need to adjust the elevation accordingly. 😁

  • @michaelrosa5410
    @michaelrosa5410 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well the old adage I was taught in archery back in 1970 was any change to your equipment will result in overall change. One thing I will say about adding weight to your arrow ? You will simply DEMOLISH what you shoot. I personally am a believer in a heavy arrow. I shoot from 550 grains to 625 grains on my 80 pound bow,,,,,300 FMJ or a 200 spine all carbon. My 200 spine are 12.8 grains an inch,300 FMJ are very close to that s well.

      I'm so glad u made this video. I make all my arrows. Start with blank shafts & do alot of nock-tuning before I even put vanes on. When I do put vanes on I use 4 small low profile vanes. My setup was scary @ the bowshop when my 4mm arrows on the chrono were buried into the wall up close where they have u blind bail. I can tell u that @ 63 lbs. & a 30" draw it was 262 f.p.s. & with a 520 grain 300 spine arrow. Since then I have several arrow builds from 530 grains to 640 grains. Most of them r very well tuned of the 4mm variety. My 640 is a steel/carbon 300 spine with a 125 grain Ethics insert/outsert with a low profile Bishop Holy Trinity head. Pretty much a backup arrow that is very tough. I don't shoot from the distances u do but I also never hunt from the ground. When u shoot a well balanced arrow from a 🌳 it's even quieter to an animal cuz the hunter & prey r on 2 different sound planes. IMO f.p.s. is way over-rated & impact specifically point of impact is under-rated. I know that the deer u were talking about could have been shot in front of the shoulder with an exit just behind the opposite shoulder. Recently I shot a deer from the ground b4 I could get up in a 🌳. Cuz I was on the ground I used the 640 grain setup & made the shot tight behind the shoulder @ 15 yards. If I was up in the 🌳 I would have had a more forward impact but on the ground with the head going from feeding to looking @ me made me take the shot due to not wanting a moving neck shot. The shot angled after the one lung was hit & exited through the liver. I was fortunate minutes later after it went only 30 yards & I was able to put the same arrow through the front of the chest. After the liver one blade just put a minor gash outside of the abdominal cavity w/o going through it & spoiling the animal. The sound is so quiet @ release & that means u aren't burning up energy cuz it's energy stored. I like to see more efficiency with bowhunters since the result is animals going down more often quicker. That will lead to the Hogstopper mindset going away for good 👍. Thanks again & keep em comin.

Might as well do what gives you the most confidence. That heavy one is still moving plenty fast to kill anything. And we all know any deer can drop so fast there’s no arrow going to beat him. Trouble is gonna be when you bury that head 12” deep in the lava rock after the kill shot and can’t pull it free. ( we don’t need to know about your puffy balls- below viewers pay grade).

When I adjust it to hit point of aim, my 10-40 yards is now off to the right. What do you think, arrow spine issue with temperature change from summer to winter or is it me? This is my budget compound setup that was ok during the summer, ok meaning I had a large dish side group at 60 yards then but now my group is tighter but not point of aim. And if I try to fix it, it's like the arrow wants to boomerang.

    Haha got to love the people who say you don't need a arrow that heavy.
    Got to remember they are God's gift to archery and always make perfect shots on everything!
    My light setup is 688 grains with a 85lb compound.
    My medium is 84lb recurve with a 923 grain arrow at 33 yards with a Buffalo full pass through and shaft was sticking in the ground half way on other side.
    Haven't shot a buffalo with my 107lb longbow yet, ill try soon as I get time.
    But the perks of shooting a fixed blade 600+ grain setups are if you hit a shoulder or a rib on a moose, elk, buffalo, hippo, etc it breaks it and goes through it.
    With a light arrow it will bounce off or not even penetrate it.
    Also if you have to worry about trajectory that much, your stalking ability on a animal suck.

      Pass thrus are vital. I went from 420s to 500 with 19 percent foc and I blow thru deer now and pigs. With the light setups you routinely have half arrows sticking out of deer

    You should have measured the penetration to see which one penetrated deeper. I’ve done that study at home (V3X 33” 75# 30.5” 80% let off 600gr arrow vs 450gr arrow) in a target and I was surprised with what I found.

      What did you find?

      The lighter arrow actually penetrated deeper every time. My take away from my personal experiment was kinetic energy is on a bell curve and just because your projectile is heavier does not necessarily mean it penetrates deeper.
      But that was just from my findings. I’m no scientist or professor lol.

      Foam is not a consistent medium to test penetration is the problem. 20% balistic gel seemed to be better but not perfect either. I waiting to find the answer from a engineering friend, he's trying to come up with something similar to muscle tissue consistency.

      @@javiermonroe5249 targets are designed to stop arrows. Heavy penetrates deeper everytime period. Its simple physics man. The only real test is on meat

      Are you talking from experimental experience or from what you’ve heard ? Heavier arrows at the same speed yes will penetrate deeper. You have to compare apples to apples not apples to oranges. Like I said kinetic energy is on a bell curve simply adding weight and changing anything else does not automatically equal deeper penetration. Take a REAL physics class buddy not TH-cam university. Penetration and kinetic energy is not that simple As adding a couple grains, you need to think of kinetic energy on a bell curve not a linear path. It doesn’t work like that bud 😂.
      In no way shape or form am I bashing @ privileged bow hunter
      This message is directed at you @Mike Guy since you were so smart lol.
