  • Are CINEMA LENSES Overrated? Worth all the Hype? - DZO Vespid Primes 6 Month Review
    In this video I share my thoughts on where I think cinema lenses fit in, and if they can add value to someone like me, a solo creator who either works alone or with smaller crews . I’ll be sharing my experience working with the DZO Vespid Primes which I’ve been using for the past 6 months in a variety of projects. DISCLAIMER: DZO did not pay me a cent to make this, I got the set on loan for review purposes and I have the option to return or purchase them, a question I’ll be answering at the end.

    good to see you back with another informative video. you are absolutely right on when filming alone you can't rely on manual focus all the time. it will just consume more time and focus from the actual content.

      Thanks bro, I used to do that in the early years of the DSLR revolution before AF was a thing, and it was so difficult that when AF came out I jumped on it and almost started depending on it too much until now, I try to balance it all out!

    Very very helpful video, thank you for the detailed breakdown. You’re one of my favorite creators on TH-cam. Thanks for always bringing so much value and not wasting viewer’s time like so many others. Would you mind sharing what adapter you’re using to go from EF or PL mount to Sony E mount? I also shoot with an fx6 and fx3 and am looking at picking up a set!

    I know that you love your autofocus Zeiss 35/1.4. I also have this lens. As i understand, you like this lens because of imperfection of it (in todays standards), which make it closer to the cinema character.

    That's what I like about TTArtisan, they are cheap manual focus lenses that look really nice for their price. It's no cine lens, but instead of using my expensive sharp stills lens with all sorts of diffusion filters to "dirty up" the image, I can get a soft, "bloomy" image with these cheap "vintage style" lenses. As always, great video!

  • @dutchmilk
    @dutchmilk ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This is correct, it is not for everyone and for every situation. I dislike how some people keep dismissing cinema lens simply because they claim they can get the same result from post production.

    • @jacques_crafford
      @jacques_crafford  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True mate! One can get some interesting looks in post but I can't replicate the DZO's, nevermind Cookes. The look coming from these lenses have given me the desire to shoot more Manual Focus because it means I get to use them!

    Great review. How much you love your Full Frames over the Super35?

  • @davidp158
    @davidp158 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I recently received the Vespid 21, 40 and 75mm primes, and quite like them. These focal lengths cover the majority of how I shoot and they have a beautiful image. Compared to the old Rokinon Cine DS lenses I was using, the Vespids produce what appears to be a “thicker”, richer image with smoother highlight rolloff.
    Auto focus certainly has its place as the technology has gotten so good, but I frequently see shots where AF hunts, or fails altogether. I do miss focus manually from time to time, but I much prefer having control of what and when the focusing occurs.

    A question I've been asking myself a lot lately. Thanks for breaking it down, Jacques. Answering some critical questions while explaining the application and techniques. Now if Sony could bake up some cinema-style lenses full of character with AF…

    • @TheGreatAmphibian
      @TheGreatAmphibian ปีที่แล้ว

      I suspect that “character” - a lack of clarity and increase in distortion - would interfere with AF.

    • @jacques_crafford
      @jacques_crafford  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome Trever! I think it's possible for Sony to do that but the challenge is the fact that these cameras originated from Stills first and Video came second. Stills lenses has to be perfect because a photographer doesn't necessary want those characteristics baked into photos and you might not get the full MP out of your camera due to the limitations, it's about keeping the masses happy. If Sony were to develop new lenses like this, it would probably cost an arm and a leg although nothing is impossible!

    • @TreverSantora

      @@jacques_crafford Thanks for pointing those details out, makes sense. In my quest for affordable cinema lenses with character I stumbled across a compelling video about the Primoplan 75 f1.9 II by Meyer Optik Gorlitz. th-cam.com/video/3aDuLmbWRSE/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=LucaBono. We'll see how it tests!

    Great video again Jacques. 👍 One question that is in my mind every time watching your video. In most of your BTS, it seems you did not use a matte box or lens hood when shooting. Is this something you look at the art form for the flares or is just not needed? I always use a lens hood or matte box because I thought the color washed away by the lights, especially outside shooting. But I took it off when I need to get the light flares. Sorry I'm beginner and still learning.

    • @jacques_crafford
      @jacques_crafford  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Riza! That's a great question. I rarely use that because I like it when light hit's the lens but if the light become's an issue I usually just gaffer tape a bit on the side for that one shot. Matte Boxes is just one thing I have to fuss with and since I don't use it that often I'd rather just leave it. Thanks for supporting my channel!

  • @xavieryt412

    So the question is : why they don' make still lenses with cinema look ?
    Why do we have to choose ? Samyang did V-AF recently but the look is not that "cinema" sadly.

    • @jacques_crafford
      @jacques_crafford  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question! I think the word "Cinema" just means it's made specially for manual focus & aperture and the look is just something that differs from lens to lens. Stills lenses has to be perfect because a photographer doesn't necessary want those characteristics baked into photos, hybrid video came after.

      @jacques_crafford  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your support! There's no such thing as the best camera for everyone but there is a "best camera for YOU". Depends on your budget and what you film. Blackmagic is the cheapest but also a hack to use in many scenarios. The reason Sony is so popular is because it's the easiest to use with minimal effort which is why it has received mass adoption but it's also expensive so it depends on your budget.

    Jacques, maybe it's a strange question, but did you tried the new 24-70 GM II (second gen)? I know that your'e using first gen. I bought this expensive lens a couple of weeks ago, and i'm trying to love it, but i can not :-( I don't know why. Something about the busy character of transition from focus to out of focus area. Maybe I'm mistaken. I'm asking because maybe you are already updated to the new version :-)
