Madness we're one of the biggest bands in the UK during the 1980s. Loads of hits, try "Baggy Trousers" "House of Fun" "Night boat to Cairo" "One Step Beyond" "Driving in my Car". Madness 'are' known as the Nutty Boys. They still do concerts most years, especially coming up to xmas. They are on tour now. The lead singer Suggs lives half a mile from me in Whitstable.
This music style is SKA and was huge in early 80s Britain…..”Ska is a genre of music that combines Jamaican and Caribbean rhythms, punk rock energy, and horn sections. Together, these elements create an energetic, highly danceable style of music”
I never fitted in at school in the early 80s and this band meant so much to me. The guy taking his glasses off near the end was the original writer of the song making a cameo appearance.
The person who you are talking about who took his glasses off near the end was Labi Siffre. He not only wrote the song, he sang it as well in 1971 It reached number 14 in the UK charts.
Oh - I used to sing this to my child since he was a baby - and also 'Our House' - so fun - he loved it so much... I never really noticed the film clip before... and yes - this era saw quite a few with a reggae - 'red, red wine'...
Hi Amber and Jay, this reached No. 4 in the UK Charts back in late 1981 and I actually bought it as a 12" Single on Vinyl, it was superb and I loved it and them as back then, Madness were my favourite group! They were brilliant as they were always so quirky as a Two Tone Ska Group but almost all their released singles were different from each other as they never really stuck to just one style, they constantly and consistently changed and that was the reason they managed to keep going unlike most of their contemporaries who split up within a couple of years whereas Madness are still going to this day with an 'Almost Unchanged Line Up' as they still contain 6 out of the 7 original members, the only Original Band Member that no longer plays with them is 'Cathal "Chas Smash" Smyth'! All the other 'Past Members' mentioned on Wikipedia are members that joined when someone left for a period of time thus stepping in but none of them were Originals aside from 'Chas Smash' because in the title of a track on their 2nd Album, Absolutely, they were known as 'Return Of The Las Palmas 7'! This 2nd Album, Absolutely, was classed by many people, and still is, as their best Studio Album ever and deservedly so too, as far as Album Chart Position, it reached No.2 as did their very 1st Studio Album too titled 'One Step Beyond' which was also an incredible album with fantastic tracks also! It contains their most popular tracks ever released as singles in general, even though they didn't reach so high in the charts as 'It Must Be Love' and 'House Of Fun' but they had the most quirky Music Videos and were an absolute Smash Hit at the time! Those tracks being 'Embarrassment' and 'Baggy Trousers' which was loved by almost all age groups, including my Grandma who wasn't normally a fan of my choice 8n music, nor were my parents, however, even my Mum liked Baggy Trousers as did my Grandma and both of 5hem had a good old chuckle at the Music Video when they watched it being played on 'Top Of The Pops'. Over here in the UK, we didn't have access to such things as MTV as until April of 1982 we only had access to just the 3 TV Channels, which were BBC1, BBC2 and ITV also known by many different names as there were Regional TV Companies Such as Thames in London and the South East of the Country, The Midlands was covered by Central (East and West) for the East and West Midlands, then you had Yorkshire which covered Yorkshire and many Northern Regions, Tyne Tees in the North East. They are all I remember but I am getting side tracked anyway! Now getting back to Madness and their fantastically Quirky Music Videos, including 'Driving In My Car'!
Oh, thank you guys for this! Madness was one of those bands that incorporated the unique '80's ska-reggae influence into their songs. They were so quirky and fun, you just had to love them. ' One Step Beyond' is a song I'll always play when I need to dance. (happens often. Good thing I live alone!🤨).
Labi Siffre wrote this and had a big hit in the 70s, his other chart successes “Crying Laughing Loving Lying” and the anti apartheid song “Something Inside so Strong” brilliant composer and singer you should check out
I’m sure it’s been said in the comments before me. But this song was written & originally recorded by Labi Siffre who is the violin player at the end who takes his glasses off and smiles at the camera.
Great reaction, Jay and Amber. I'm glad that you like 'The Nutty Boys' as they were known as the time, they started out as part of the Ska revival of the early '80s in the U.K. but quickly developed their own unique style, I recommend, 'Baggy Trousers', and 'House of Fun' for your next reactions to them.
Madness are an absolutely brilliant band, so very many great songs, it is totally criminal that they only ever had 1 British number 1, so many more of their songs should have got to the top of the charts

Madness had a very eclectic collection of songs, quite a few different sounds in their songs, I absolutely love this song it never gets old, thank you for reacting to it.😀
The guys are still touring, I was lucky enough to see them in June on Cannock Chase , great gig really puts a smile on your face! If you get the chance I’d definitely recommend seeing them.
Madness were a band of best friends and they just had the best time fooling around in their videos!!! They were just loving every moment. And it was infectious for the audience.
Madness were a very successful band in the UK and remain popular to this day as a live act. Plenty of good songs already suggested in the comments I've read. I'd add One Better Day and their 90s comeback song, Lovestruck.
Labi Siffre, who wrote this great tune, appears near the end of this video, as one of the violinists, singing a line! His most famous song 'Something inside so strong', has become a worldwide 'anthem' for downtrodden communities, & is such a fabulous song, it deserves an airing at every opportunity!! Please react to it, your ears will thank you!!
@@homiepr8 Me too, but I still remembered the original, from when I was a kid in the late 60's. I was also into the Mod-Revival, of the late 70's, including my 1959 Lambretta, & I loved all the two-tone bands (& a few others!) but Labi Siffre's treatment just strikes a chord with me, it's just such a beautifully simple song, but with a deep meaning.
That was Labi Siffre at the end. He wrote the song and released the original version of it. I'd love it if you reacted to his song "Something Inside So Strong". It is a beautiful, powerful protest song against apartheid in South Africa. It's amazing ❤
More 80s acts to check out - Debbie harry (solo from Blondie) - french kissin’ (in the u.s.a.), backfired; Missing persons - words, walking in l.a., destination unknown; Lone justice - shelter, ways to be wicked; Go west - call me, we close our eyes; Abc - when smokey sings, be near me; Hothouse flowers (irish) - I’m sorry, don’t go, give it up; The alarm (welsh) - rain in the summertime, sold me down the river; World party - ship of fools, all come true, way down now, put the message in the box; The call - let the day begin, the walls came down, I still believe, everywhere I go; Thompson twins - lies, lay your hands on me; The motels - total control; Romeo void - a girl in trouble, never say never; Thomas dolby - I love you goodbye, Europa and the pirate twins, I love you goodbye
Always heard this growing up in the UK in the early/mid 90s, love it to this day! Originally sung by Labi Siffre, worth listening to that as well as I Got The which you might recognise
The lead singer, Suggs, real name is Graham McPherson. Was a real thrill for me to be part of a display at the Clan Macpherson Museum, called '20th Century Macphersons'. My photo and biography was right next to Suggs'. Such an honour!!!
Madness were serious musicians but didnt take themselves seriously, every video was really entertaining. Iconic in the UK from the late 70s till today.
Hi, you two. It's Andrew Erroch fae Paisley in Scotland here again. Now, this is definitely a wonderful rabbit hole you will want to go down time and time again. I've loved Madness right from their very first hit, which may still be my favourite of theirs, but there are so many. They have an iconic compilation album that was a huge hit too, called Complete Madness. I'm glad they are still touring and will be back at my workplace, The OVO Hydro in Glasgow, on the 1st of December this year, after I've been in Thailand for the whole month of November. That first brilliant hit in 1979 was 'The Prince' about Jamaican ska singer Prince Buster. Æx 🙏
Interesting trivia. This song is used very predominately in a very underrated film from '90 called The Tall Guy. This was an early screenplay by Richard Curtis who later went on to great success with Four Weddings, Notting Hill, Love Actually and more. It starred Jeff Goldblum, who was still riding the wave from The Fly, as an American actor trying to make it in London. It has Rowan Atkinson as well as Emma Thompson in her very first movie roll. I have no idea why it wasn't popular as it's a genuinely funny movie overall. One of its highlights comes when we get to see parts of the opening night of the new musical production he gets the lead in based on The Elephant Man. For anyone on here who hasn't seen it see if you can find it streaming somewhere. It's worth the viewing especially if you like British humor. :D
Came here just to say this! Can't hear this song without thinking of The Tall Guy 😀 One of my favourite movies. Directed by Mel Smith, who used to be in the ensemble comedy show Not the Nine O'Clock News with Rowan Atkinson, pre-Blackadder, pre-Bean.
The guy who was playing the violin at the end and took his glasses off while singing the song is Labi Siffre, who wrote the lyrics and was the original singer of the song.
I've seen a lot of Americans not getting the humour of Madness or British humour in general, but I've seen a lot love it!!! These guys are legends over here in the UK and it sums up UK humour. Madness are popular because they inject a lot of fun in their videos, not just their music. You guys nailed it..😂😂😂 These guys are still selling out today!! 👏👏
So pleased you enjoyed this. When I was growing up in South Devon UK, it was reggae, ska n b, two tone, Madness, The Specials, UB40, Bad Manners that me and my friends listened to and went to watch. I still love Reggae and Ska and I'm so pleased my nephews band The Cabarats have a strong Ska element to their music. A fun fact about Madness, is that when music videos were becoming a big thing, Madness was spending about £10k making their own videos, when other bands were spending fortunes on videos.

You have to play The Prince.
A great example of British Ska.
I hadn’t heard this before - One Step Beyond and Our House got airplay on MTV back in the day and they were so fun!
Was looking for someone to mention the original. I do prefer the Madness cover as I grew up on the second wave of ska tunes
@@homiepr8
Me too, but I still remembered the original, from when I was a kid in the late 60's.
I was also into the Mod-Revival, of the late 70's, including my 1959 Lambretta, & I loved all the two-tone bands (& a few others!) but Labi Siffre's treatment just strikes a chord with me, it's just such a beautifully simple song, but with a deep meaning.
One of the all time great British bands. Absolute National Treasures and very much loved.
That was Labi Siffre at the end. He wrote the song and released the original version of it.
I'd love it if you reacted to his song "Something Inside So Strong". It is a beautiful, powerful protest song against apartheid in South Africa. It's amazing ❤
MUST HEAR Classics, Desmond Dekker & The Aces "Israelites" & "Fu Manchu"

Gotta love Gen Z’a and Millennials discovering our music. Which was amazing. 70’s 80’s and 90’s music rocked
SKA SKA - You guys sooo! need to do Bad Manners Can Can! PS - love your channel🥰😍🤩
One of the biggest and best bands of the 80s in the UK.Legends !
"The right amount of... weirdness?" Nah my dude, the right amount of Madness! 🤣
You must check out "The Specials - A Message to you Rudy"
A great SKA band the was a multiracial band. You will dig them. Miss 80's music!!!
this is the cover version from the 1971 hit by Labi Siffre
Labi Siffre made a cameo appearance at the end too.
That was labri siffre dressed in white that took his glasses off and smiled at the end of the video
Love Madness. 80s English Ska at its best.
Madness sang Our House on top of Buckingham Palace its was brilliant ❤❤
His father would be so proud,, Damian Marley "Stand A Chance"
I grew up in Tucson of all places- the first time I saw Madness was on MTV- I've loved them ever since!
After the Beatles and Tony Christie, Madness were my first favourite group back in the late 70's into the early and mid 80's.
This was 'Our song',we were married for thirty two years. I lost him in 2020 and we played this at his funeral.
His MOST uplifting MUST HEAR classic,, Robert Nesta (Tuff Gong) Marley "Three Little Birds"..R.I.P Bob 🙏❤️
WHat a great cover. Madness put their unmistakable mark on this classic song.
Æx 🙏
Off to see madness in December for about the 6th time, it's always a brilliant fun concert with no one sitting down.
Madness my all time favourite band, fun just pure fun and fantastic music........🙂
Great movie. It has one of the funniest sex scenes ever. And Rowan Atkinson plays an excellent baddie
The guy who was playing the violin at the end and took his glasses off while singing the song is Labi Siffre, who wrote the lyrics and was the original singer of the song.
oh those were the days. We LOVED Madness back in the day. Such exiting times then. Not everyone's cup of tea but I LOVED them.
I've seen a lot of Americans not getting the humour of Madness or British humour in general, but I've seen a lot love it!!! These guys are legends over here in the UK and it sums up UK humour. Madness are popular because they inject a lot of fun in their videos, not just their music. You guys nailed it..😂😂😂
These guys are still selling out today!!
It's not weird, It's Brit humour ....tongue in cheek. love it
